Martin High School kids learn public speaking skills
with Carol P. Andrew, ACB Carol provided two highly interactive public speaking
workshop experience workshop experiences for Martin County High School
9th graders, each 9th graders, each lasting 1 & ½ hours. Treasure Coast
Toastmasters membe Toastmasters member, Olivia Thompson, who has much
experience working experience working with teens, assisted. Carol’s
approach was to in approach was to involve the teens in activities as much
as possible throughout both workshops, with the goal of helping them drop self-
consciousness. She introduced the teens to physical and vocal warm ups to
prepare their “instrument,” i.e. the body and voice, to best present a speech. The
teens were working on the “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean
Covey. Carol asked them to step in front of the class and describe in their own
words something that touched them as personally relevant in their particular
“Effective Habit.” Carol shared information about Toastmasters’ Youth
Leadership Program with their teacher. The experience should provide support
and encouragement as the teens move forward with their speeches throughout
their school, college, and life careers.

NEW MEMBER CORNER SVETLANA NEMEROFF
“Not everyone is born Demosthenes, the
famous Greek orator!"
Svetlana or Lana as she asks to
be called did a wonderful first
Ice Breaker speech. The Ice
Breaker is the first speech in
the competent communicator
manual series and is meant as an
introduction to the member.
Lana made us aware of how
surprised she was to see people
smiling at here when she first
came to the US. She shares with
us why she joined.
Demosthenes strengthened
his voice by speaking on
the seashore over the roar
of the waves. In order to
become a good orator you
have to start with
something. I am not a
native speaker of English,
so I came to Toastmasters
with the hope that I could
overcome my fear of public
speaking in English.
I was amazed with the
performances of the
members of the club at the
first meeting. They radiated
charm, humor, confidence,
creativity, and intelligence
– all in one package.

On the one hand, it scared
me even more. On the other
hand, I thought that it would be great place to
grow.
After a few meetings I
decided to prepare my first
speech. I picked a mentor,
Valerie Johnson. She spent
a good four hours with me
going over my speech.
Valerie gave me a good
advice and after a few
rehearsals, I was ready to
perform."
