Research Subcommittee
Top Research Needs from Survey
Distracted walking/bicycling
Pedestrian counting guidance (e.g. technologies, recommended practices, emerging video technology,
comparison of existing products, intersections versus mid-block, etc.)
Synthesis on automated vehicles focusing on intersection design for automated vehicles and connection
between pedestrian/vehicle and vehicle/infrastructure
How will/how should the presence of autonomous vehicles change the way we design intersections?
Incorporation of walking considerations in the planning and project development process (e.g. state of
practice on how transit is considered in lane development process, synthesis of how pedestrians are
considered, on/off-site issues, traffic impact studies)
How will autonomous vehicles and non-motorized users communicate with one another?
Review of practice on pedestrian push button placement around Separated Bike Lanes and pedestrian
crossing islands
Self-selection in walking travel behavior (e.g. place of people, linkage to Household Travel Survey, etc.)
Review of practice on accessibility and Separated Bike Lanes (e.g. detectable warning placement, surface
treatment options, etc.
Transit access needs
Police and hospital data issues and opportunities
Research Subcommittee
• Key Takeaways from Survey:
– A better understanding of how automated vehicles will interact with
pedestrians is needed. What are the greatest research opportunities?
– Accessibility issues around separated bike lanes.
– Lots of interest in pedestrian research, but we need more follow-through in
writing statements.
– We need to solicit topics throughout year, not just prior to deadlines.
• 2017 Priorities
– Continue coordination with AASHTO, other TRB subcommittees, and other
partners.
– Recruit new members with fresh ideas and interest in contributing.
– Develop more research needs statements.
– Identify other funding opportunities for pedestrian research.

FOCUS OF PRESENT PEDESTRIAN GUIDELINES
• Human factors orientation is primary focus
• 10-10; Gap selection(entrances & exits), sound cue
problems, mid-block pedestrian signals
• 11-8; Large-radius curbs, curb ramps, problems with APS
tones & traffic signal timing complexity, RTOR
• 20-6; Pavement marking crosswalk recommendations by
ADT; shared use lanes, in-lane warning lights
• 21-8; In-sign lights/beacons, in-pavement flashing lights,
automated vs. push-button pedestrian detection
• 21-10; Luminare placement, use broad spectrum(LED,
fluorescent, induction sources), positive contrast
Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems
‘POSSIBLE’ CANDIDATE GUIDELINES?
• Location of pedestrian signals for safety, visibility, and
accessibility
• Counter measures to aid vision-impaired pedestrians for
identifying YIELD vs. STOP control
• Guideline on spacing of pedestrian signals on arterials with
long separated signalized intersections
• Guideline on when to use leading pedestrian intervals
• Guidance on selecting the kind of intersection pedestrian
warning of pedestrian presence (HAWK, RRFB, lighting, etc.)
Human Factors Guidelines for Road Systems
• Current HFG will be reviewed for new reference updating—big effort
• Hold Sunday workshop and similar focus ones
• Identify RAB substantive research & inform JSC/NCHRP/contractor
• This will not guarantee specific guidelines
• Your help will provide needed input & guidance
• The goal is to get a great Pedestrian Chapter for HFG
