So what’s new? Glad you asked.

• “NavigatingtheNEC” a new, six-hour online course designed for the non-electrician entering a renewable energy field, someone studying for a NABCEP exam, or anyone in need of a good refresher on how to use the National Electrical Code. It’s only $75 for MREA Members, and is scheduled four times in 2016.

• Revivalofour“PVMath”course, with instructor and MREA Board Member Bob Hattier. This course will be held in Milwaukee, and has intentionally been scheduled two weeks before the spring NABCEP exams —perfect for prepping.

• “IndependentStudy” courses for Recognized Training Partners (RTPs) who want to offer the MREA’s Site Assessment and PV Design and Sales Certificates to their program students. PV 705 and PV 706 begin and end at anytime, and are 100% self-paced with no due dates or live webinars, which is ideal for busy instructors.

• “FacetoFacePV”not one, but THREE offerings of our accredited and recognized PV 101-201-202-301 course sequence at the MREA in Custer, WI. Get all of the PV training you need for entry-level knowledge in just eight days—in April, July, or October.

PV Site Assessor Training (PV 201)Participants in this course will learn how to perform a PV site assessment for a home or small business. The course will cover site assessment tools, load analysis, energy efficiency recommendations, array placement options, basic system sizing, cost estimates, and evaluating existing infrastructure on site. Participants will learn how to access online tools for analyzing the solar resource, calculating PV system performance, and researching available incentives. • Available as a self-paced, four-week, online course with optional live webinars OR in a traditional classroom setting• Prerequisite: Basic PV (PV 101), or equivalent• Price: $250 (members), $270 (non-members)

Basic Photovoltaics (PV 101) This course teaches the basics of solar electric systems. NABCEP PV Entry Level Progression

PV System Design (PV 202)This course teaches the basic step-by-step process of designing a utility-interactive PV system. Example site assessments, PV system component design examples, and PV case studies will be used to learn about selecting equipment, system sizing, layout planning, array siting, and other design considerations. Heavy emphasis is placed on using the National Electrical Code.

NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam Training in Two Weeks!

This four-day course offers participants an advanced level of hands-on learning that will prepare them for field installations and other advanced courses. Participants will design, size, and select PV system components, and identify and interpret National Electric Code (NEC) articles that pertain to the installations. While working on a training roof, existing PV arrays, and portable labs, participants will learn safety procedures, system design and layout, component selection and specifications, electrical and mechanical integration processes, and troubleshooting techniques related to designing and installing battery-based and interconnected PV systems.

PV Sales and Finance (PV 203)

This course begins with participants learning various sales techniques used to approach potential PV system customers. Next, participants review basic financial concepts used to evaluate PV systems including cash flow analysis, return on investment, and present value of an investment. Then, participants learn how to determine the costs and benefits of PV system projects by using a financial spreadsheet model to evaluate utility bill savings, cash flow, payback period, financing options, and program incentives. Participants will be provided temporary access to leading industry financial modeling software to gain experience with a variety of modeling tools, and learn to evaluate PV systems in terms of benefits to the environment and society. The course concludes with a practice financial assessment of an example PV system that includes predetermined design and financial specifications.

Alex JarvisSolar Systems of Indiana Inc. Alex installs solar electric systems, and teaches and writes about renewable energy. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Indiana University. He’s installed both grid-tied and battery-based systems. Alex is a NABCEP Certified PV Installer and an MREA Certified PV and Solar Thermal Site Assessor.

Advanced PV Training

PV Math (PV 409)This eight-hour course will focus on reviewing the mathematical concepts and processes you need to know for the NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certification Exam. We’ll cover the full gamet of calucations required for a PV system design, using a combination of lecture and classroom activities.Extra practice and focus will be directed by the course participants in order to address their particular areas of concern.

This four-week online course covers the structural considerations involved in solar electric (PV) and solar thermal installations. Bob Hattier Alternative Currents, LLCBob is an MREA Board Member and a Supervising (Master) Electrician in Chicago where he specializes in renewable energy systems. He is both a NABCEP Certified PV Installer and a PV Technical Sales Professional. He teaches PV Systems, Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, and Green Building for the MREA, IBEW Local 134, and the U.S. Green Building Council Illinois Chapter. Additionally he is a Project Manager and co-owner of Alternative Currents, LLC, a Chicago-based renewable energy design and consultation company.

Andy DeRocher Sustainable Engineering GroupAndy is a Project Engineer for an engineering firm in Madison, Wisconsin, that specializes in energy efficiency, commissioning, and sustainable design services for commercial buildings. He has been working in the renewable energy industry since 2004 after receiving an education in civil engineering from UW-Madison. He is a licensed Master Plumber, NABCEP Certified Solar Heating Installer, and IREC Certified Instructor™ for Solar Heating Installer.

Mark MorganBearpaw Design and ConstructionMark has been building, installing, and teaching sustainable construction and renewable energy for over 35 years. Passionate about teaching, he has studied and taken classes on accelerative learning and multiple intelligences. Mark has led more than 20 solar thermal installations and teaches Solar Domestic Hot Water, Solar Space Heating, and Solar Hot Water Installation Labs, and various Green Building courses at the MREA.

Benjamin NuszMid-State Technical CollegeBen has worked as an installer, site assessor, designer, and consultant for solar thermal systems. He is a NABCEP Certified Solar Heating Installer and co-author of the book Solar Water Heating: A Comprehensive Guide to Solar Water and Space Heating Systems. Ben is the Renewable Thermal Instructor at Mid-State Technical College in Wisconsin Rapids.

In this four-week online course, participants will learn the basics of liquid-based solar thermal space heating systems with an emphasis on northern climates. Presentations and discussions will cover system types, heat storage methods and strategies, heat exchange methods, boiler and furnace integration, high-mass systems, system sizing, and large and split array collector mounting strategies.

Solar Thermal System Conceptual Design (ST 410)This eight-week online course explores system design considerations, including collector sizing and configuration, pipe sizing, component sizing, solar fluid volume estimation, heat storage, heat delivery, code considerations, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Participants will apply design elements while working through case study systems, including space heating, commercial, and process heat applications.

Cris Folk Madison CollegeCris began teaching in 1982 for the U.S. Navy and has provided training ever since. He has been employed by Madison College since 1999, teaching electronics and industrial maintenance. Small Wind Site Assessor Training (W 201)Participants in this course will learn how to perform a site assessment for a small wind system at a residence, small farm, or similar rural location. The course will cover how to: evaluate a site’s wind energy potential, determine wind speeds at proposed heights, make a load profile for a client’s energy needs, determine appropriate tower heights and types for a site, and estimate energy output and range of costs for a chosen system.

Jenny HeinzenMidwest Renewable Energy Association Jenny is the MREA Training Coordinator and is a licensed Master Electrician in Wisconsin. She has a strong background in wind energy and also teaches some introductory PV courses and facilitates all of the MREA’s online courses. She’s on the Board of Directors for RENEW Wisconsin, participates in NABCEP committees, and helps run the annual Small Wind Conference in Stevens Point. She holds a degree in Career and Technical Education and studied Environmental Science and Policy at UW-Green Bay.

Introduction to Tower Climbing and Safety (W 307)

This one-day course will focus on the fundamentals of tower climbing and safety. Participants will learn about climbing mechanics, hazard assessment, fall protection, basic knot tying, and more. The course will conclude with a climb on a tower—practicing the safety procedures and knowledge learned in the classroom.

Wind Turbine Repair and Maintenance (W 401)

Participants in this two-day course will perform repairs and preventive maintenance on the three MREA wind energy systems. This is a working course that includes tower climbing using safe work practices and proper fall protection.

Course DescriptionThe MREA’s Solar Training Academy is a series of weekend classes that will walk students through the PV design and installation process. The format of the Solar Training Academy will be MREA’s class progression that will include Basic Photovoltaics, PV Site Assessor, Intermediate PV, PV Design Lab, and PV Sales and Finance.

Classes will be held one weekend each month beginning in January and concluding in early May. Topics of this training will cover PV equipment selection, utility inter-tied and battery-based systems, batteries, mechanical and electrical integration, PV design, PV residential site assessment, National Electric Code, system commissioning, and solar financials.

Participation in the Solar Training Academy will also include opportunities to meet with professionals in the solar industry. Classes are one weekend a month, Saturday and Sunday, from January to May.

The focus of the Milwaukee Academy is on the installation process. This class will decommission and reinstall a solar electric

system on our training roof in Milwaukee.

MREA Solar Training Academy SuccessWhat happens after you complete the Solar Training Academy? An interview with STA alumni Barbara Sogn-Frank.

What made you want to start a career in renewable energy?I’d been concerned about the environment and humanity’s destructive impact on it for most of my life, but something in my head and heart just snapped when I listened to an interview with Josh Fox who did the “Gasland” documentary in spring of 2010. At the time I heard that interview, oil was still gushing into the Gulf almost a month after the Deep Water Horizon explosion. That was it. I knew I had to figure out how to stop being a captive consumer of fossil fuels and that I wanted to be part of the wave of people working on making saner, healthier-for-life-on-planet-earth choices for communities, present and future.

What was helpful about the training? Everything! MREA has created great quality coursework and a team of superb staff and instructors who know their stuff and enthusiastically share that knowledge.

What was your favorite thing about MREA training? Kris Schmid was a great instructor with a clear, good-natured communication style. He was great at making the material understandable and relevant for everyone—from those with technical and electrical backgrounds, to students like me for whom much

Would you recommend MREA training to others? If so, why? I would absolutely recommend that anyone who is even just a bit curious about renewable energy attend MREA training. Why? Because that curiosity is the future whispering to you. And I’m confident that any time and resources you invest in training with MREA will be well worth it for you, whether you apply your new understanding to a job, or to the way you manage energy for your household and life overall.

Where do you see careers in renewable energy heading in terms of growth in the Midwest? From what I’m reading and what I see entering this industry—the demand for qualified solar and other renewable energy professionals is only going to increase—and quickly.

What is your favorite part about having a career in renewable energy? I’ve had a great life thus far with much to be really, really thankful for….but honestly, the opportunity to be working to get more solar up and running for families, farms, businesses, and communities makes me feel absolutely electric! I finally feel like I’m living on purpose.

MREA Code Training Courses

Julie BrazeauMidwest Renewable Energy AssociationJulie Brazeau is a WI Master Electrician, WI Commercial Electrical Inspector and NABCEP Certified PV Installer. She is an IREC Certified Instructor™ for Photovoltaics. As the Instructor Development Coordinator at the MREA, Julie works with PV trainers from training organizations across the Midwest.

Many of these courses are approved for continuing education credits with state licensing agencies for electricians and inspectors throughout the Midwest, and credits can be obtained upon request with ample lead-time (30-60 days). Contact [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

2014 National Electrical Code Update for PV (PV 614)This four-hour class concentrates on changes made to the 2014 NEC, beginning with code reorganization and new definitions. The new “Rapid Shutdown” requirement will be discussed at length, along with changes in labeling, the new 1000-Volt limit for PV systems, as well as evolving grid interconnection requirements in Article 705.• Approved for 4 NABCEP continuing education credits

NEC Requirements for PV Systems (PV 616)This six-hour course reviews 2014 National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements for PV systems, paying particular attention to Arti-cles 690 and 705. This course is designed for code officials as well as PV installation professionals, and covers PV equipment listing and labeling requirements, circuit calculations, wiring methods, grounding, over-current protection, system labeling requirements, and common code violations.• Approved for 6 NABCEP continuing education credits

Navigating the National Electrical Code (G110)This six-hour online course introduces learners to the National Electrical Code. Designed for first-time users and beginning or non-electricians, this course explores the layout, format, and language of the Code. Participants will become familiar with the contents of the NEC by exploring Chapters, Articles, and Tables, and will learn how to effectively navigate the NEC.

Inspecting PV SystemsUpon request and at special events, the MREA also offers NEC PV training in two, three, and four-hour increments for electricians and inspectors:

MREA Code TrainingCode officials will encounter a wide variety of PV equipment, system types, and installation practices when permitting and inspecting PV installations. The MREA offers two-, three-, four-, or six-hour code classes that will keep Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) up to date on new and evolving code requirements. Through partnerships with training organizations and code official associations in seven states, the MREA has already reached over 300 electrical inspectors around the Midwest.

Consistent communication between PV installers and code officials can reduce the “soft costs” of installation associated with permitting and inspecting processes. Designed for installers, electricians, and inspectors, MREA code classes will give PV professionals the tools they need to streamline permitting processes, install code compliant PV systems, and avoid costly mistakes.

MREA code courses are recognized for continuing education credit hours by many Midwest state licensing agencies as well as the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP). Thanks to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Market Pathways program, the MREA is partnering with four universities in the Midwest to help them develop roadmaps for deploying and investing in solar photovoltaic (PV) energy resources.

US colleges and universities are going solar. More than 300 campuses nationwide have made investments, including fully-owned systems on buildings, open land, and parking structures and long-term power purchase agreements from large PV generation facilities. With nearly $500 billion dollars in foundation investments, US universities represent a large potential market for PV investment.

To help universities take advantage of this growing investment opportunity, the MREA is working with the University of Minnesota, Illinois State University, Purdue University, and Missouri University of Science & Technology to create PV Development Roadmaps leading to more than a megawatt of solar investment at each institution.

The MREA is supporting Campus Solar Deployment Teams lead by graduate students at each university. These teams are conducting site assessments, building stakeholder maps, modeling project finance, and developing proposals for consideration by their respective governance boards; all as part of a pilot course being developed by MREA to be made available to universities across the country in 2016.

As part of this effort, MREA is also offering free Basic Photovoltaics (PV 101) and PV Site Assessment (PV 201) online courses to student as participating universities and hosting a series of site visits and professional development events through the Solar University Network (SUN).

Courses at the MREA are based on industry-approved task analyses, and are designed to satisfy the competencies and learning objectives listed for exams, licenses, certificates, and certifications available to renewable energy professionals. The MREA Professional Certificate Programs provide a valuable foundation for professionals in the growing field of renewable energy.

MREA Professional Credentials

The MREA Site Assessment Certificate Program trains individuals to provide site-specific renewable energy assessment and consumer education. The MREA trains renewable energy site assessors in the following residential technologies: photovoltaics (PV), solar thermal, and small wind. The MREA’s Site Assessment Certificate Program is accredited by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC).

The MREA Site Assessor Certificate provides skills training needed by professionals engaging consumers in renewable energy systems. Site assessors evaluate the energy consumption of a household or small business, as well as the solar or wind resource at the location. They help clients understand system options and their benefits. They work with clients to recommend the site and size of the solar or wind system. Site assessors also estimate system production and costs, and identify available incentives and financing options.

MREA Site Assessment Certificate Program

Those who become trained PV site assessors by successfully completing the MREA Site Assessment Certificate Program are eligible for 18 NABCEP continuing education credits.

This Independent Study course is a requirement for instructors who wish to offer the MREA PV Site Assessment Certificate at their institutions. In this course, instructors will review teaching materials and resources related to site analysis, customer interviews, site evaluation, system placement, shading analysis, and financial analysis. Instructors will focus on the technical evaluation skills required to be a technical mentor for their students’ practice reports using the MREA PV Site Assessment template, directions, and grading rubric, as well as administration of the program using the MREA online learning platform. Eligible instructors must have completed at least one of their two practice site assessment reports before taking this course. Successful completion of PV 705, the submission and mentoring of two practice reports, and a passing grade on the exam will qualify instructors as an MREA PV Site Assessment Certificate Recognized Training Provider. Instructors must sign a Letter of Agreement, and pay a $300 fee every three years.

Become an MREA Recognized Training Provider

This Independent Study online course is a requirement for instructors interested in teaching MREA’s Photovoltaic Design and Sales Certificate Program at their institution. Students will learn to apply tech mentoring tools and methods to assess technical design and sales proposals. This course covers instructional materials and tech mentoring strategies, as well as procedures and policies for completing the MREA’s PV Design and Sales Certificate Program. To become a Recognized Training Provider and offer MREA’s PV Design and Sales Certificate Program at their institution, instructors are required to hold a current MREA’s PV Design and Sales Certificate, sign a Letter of Agreement, and pay a $300 fee. Recognized Training Provider status is valid for three years.

NABCEP Professional Credentials National Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP)

The NABCEP Entry Level Program is designed for those individuals wanting to get into the solar field; achievement of the NABCEP Entry Level Exam is a way for candidates to demonstrate that they have achieved a basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation, and operation of photovoltaic (PV) and solar heating systems.

PV Entry Level ProgramThe NABCEP PV Entry Level Program is designed for individuals who want to get into the PV field. Achievement of the NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam is a way for candidates to demonstrate that they have achieved a basic knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation, and operation of PV systems.

The MREA is a registered NABCEP PV Entry Level Exam Provider. Those who successfully complete Basic PV (PV 101), PV Site Assessor Training (PV 201), and PV System Design (PV 202) or the MREA Solar Training Academy—are eligible to take the two-hour exam, either at an approved MREA training facility or online.

NABCEP Photovoltaics Entry Level Program

Upon completion of the courses taught in accordance with the NABCEP Entry Level learning objectives, and prior to taking the NABCEP Entry Level Exam, participants should have demonstrated a basic understanding of the principles outlined in the learning objectives. The learning objectives for the exam are available at www.nabcep.org.

Individuals passing the NABCEP Entry Level Exam should not be confused with NABCEP Certified Installers. Taking the classes and passing the exam does not qualify an individual to install systems.

NABCEP currently has entry-level exam programs in PV and solar heating. The MREA is a NABCEP Entry Level Exam Provider for PV and solar heating.

AccreditationInterstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC)In the 1990s, experts in the fields of renewable energy, education, training, and accreditation worked to create ISPQ Standard 01022:2011, which laid out the requirements for training programs and the certification of trainers in the renewable energy, energy efficiency, and distributed generation fields.

In 2013, the Standard was revised to more clearly differentiate between accreditation (the organization) and certification (the person). IREC Standard 01023 addresses accreditation of training providers, while Standard 01024 pertains to instructors.

The MREA is an IREC Accredited Training Provider that provides courses and programs for PV and solar heating professionals. The following MREA courses are accredited by IREC:

Our courses are based on industry-approved task analyses and are designed to satisfy the competencies listed and required for professional credentials.
