Billed as the largest and most influential trade agreement in history, the TPPA is predicted to expand Malaysia's import and export volumes, and stimulate trade opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. What are the tax, commercial and legislative repercussions of its implementation? How will it affect the accounting profession and business? Accountants, as business partners and managers of value, will be pivotal in ensuring clients and stakeholders benefit from the TPPA. It is imperative for them, as vanguards of business, to have a clear understanding on the ramifications of the TPPA, as they must be competent to guide businesses through the post-TPPA landscape.

SEMINAR PROGRAMME

8.00am Registration & Welcome Refreshment

9.00am Realising Malaysia’s TPPA Vision

Gain a big picture of the TPPA landscape and details of Malaysia’s journey towards membership in this game-changing trade pact. What issues and challenges did Malaysia encounter in the process of becoming a member of TPPA? Where do we stand now, and what more needs to be done to realise Malaysia’s TPPA dream?

Speaker: Wan Wadrina Wan Abdul Wahab | Senior Principal Assistant Director, Ministry of International Trade & Industry

10.00am Morning Refreshment

10.30am TPPA: The Economic Impacts

With the TPPA, will we see a net growth effect? Will economic stimulus and disruption from the TPPA lead to job creation or job losses? PwC’s latest research indicates the TPPA will have far-reaching impact on the Malaysian economy and selected key economic sectors. We examine the economic impact arising from Malaysia’s involvement in the TPPA, and conversely, the impact if Malaysia had rejected the TPPA.

Speaker: Tengku Muhammad Taufik | Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers

11.30am Addressing Non-Economic Concerns: A National Interest Analysis

The TPPA is predicted to have a sweeping influence not just on the global market and its member economies, but also on society, regulations, and the environment. What can stakeholders expect from its implementation? Gain an alternative perspective on the non-economic impact of the TPPA.

Speaker: Firdaos Rosli | Fellow, Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia

12.30pm Lunch

2.00pm TPPA and the Evolving Roles of Professional Accountants in Business

Accountants, as business partners and managers of value, will be pivotal in ensuring the TPPA takes off. How can accountants steward their organisations to bring the TPPA to fruition? Answering this question and more, we will examine the following concerns: How will TPPA affect accountants in the commercial sphere? What can accountants do to leverage on TPPA? Which industries will benefit from TPPA, and vice-versa, which industries may face increased competition?

Moderator: Wan Saiful Wan Jan | Chief Executive Officer, Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS)

Panellists: Tengku Muhammad Taufik | Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers

YBhg. Dato’ Dr Lukman Ibrahim | MIA Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Committee Member

3.15pm Tax Impact of TPPA: What Must Accountants Know?

The TPPA is expected to facilitate trade in its twelve member nations by liberalising regulations and breaking down tariff and non-tariff barriers. What can accountants expect in terms of tax developments post-TPPA? Will there be a reduction in levies and diminished taxes? Will there be tax exemptions and lowered trade and non-tariff barriers? We will attempt to separate reality from the rumours to provide an accurate snapshot of its impact on taxation.

Speaker: Thenesh Kannaa | Tax Advisor, TraTax Malaysia

4.00pm Understanding the Legal Implications of TPPA

A new trade pact will undoubtedly require reforms and revisions to existing legislation. In the wake of TPPA implementation, accountants can expect new laws regulating how member countries conduct business. We will examine the relevant regulatory and compliance impact of implementing TPPA, in particular the controversial Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism, which stands accused of impinging on individual sovereignty. As a fitting conclusion, our expert will explain the impact of TPPA ratification and chart Malaysia’s path forward. We will also look into the ramifications in the event Malaysia withdraw from the TPPA.

Speaker: S. Saravana Kumar | Partner, Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill
