We love the theme of this annual report, Celebrating the Power to Do Good, because it really sums up the meaning of philanthropy: the power to do good. Here at the Porter County Community Foundation, our job is helping people and organizations to maximize this power.

As a Foundation, we connect people to the causes they care about so we can all improve lives in Porter County. Together, we strengthen the work of non-profits through grants and other efforts that build the capacity to do even more good. Collectively, we build a stronger community for all by identifying issues, bringing together key stakeholders, and leveraging resources for greater impact.

During this past year alone, the Foundation was able to give more than $1.9 million in grants to worthy Porter County organizations – all because people like you have chosen to maximize your power to do good through the Foundation. We thank you for choosing the Foundation as your place to support Porter County.

“We chose the Foundation to

handle our estate giving plans. We like

their longevity, respect their expertise, and

know they will remain faithful to our wishes.”

—Doug & Jackie Watkins

Linking people with ways to do good

Doug and Jackie Watkins are familiar faces in Porter County as volunteers for organizations like the VNA Hospice, Hilltop House, and Immanuel Lutheran Church. “We believe in giving back,” explained Doug Watkins. The couple met while working at Valparaiso University, marrying in 1989.

Doug went on to become an advisor with Thrivent Financial, a Fortune 500 financial services nonprofit organization, where he served others for more than 20 years. As he counseled clients in the best ways to approach charitable giving, he became familiar with the Porter County Community Foundation. “I liked the Foundation’s longevity and expertise,” said Doug, who had seen other organizations come and go.

“I grew up in Gary, where there was this beautiful Tudor-style church. It was a gleaming, wonderful edifice that you knew would be there forever. Yet, years later it closed and started to decay. Now film crews use it as a site to shoot pieces that depict bomb blasts and war zones. That was never supposed to happen to a place like that,” he shared.

So when the couple began thinking of their own estate planning, they wanted to ensure their philanthropy would last forever. They chose to join the Foundation’s Echo Society, creating an endowed gift that would live on forever to help five causes dearest to their hearts: Immanuel Lutheran Church, Valparaiso University, Hilltop Neighborhood House, VNA Hospice, and Porter County Animal Shelter.

“We can rest easy knowing that the Foundation will honor our wishes,” said Jackie. “We think we can do a better job than the government when it comes to spending the dollars we’ve worked so hard to earn. Further, we think the Foundation is best qualified to guarantee that our values and philanthropic wishes will continue to benefit this community long after we are gone,” said Doug.

The Echo Society honors the extraordinary generosity of those who make an endowed lifetime gift or leave all or a portion of their assets to the Foundation through a will or estate plan. By creating an endowed gift, you can leave a lasting legacy – like an echo. You may choose the cause or causes to benefit from your gift.

Pat Crise established an endowed fund with the Foundation to benefit causes she cares about. Her gift will make a difference today and forever.

Maximizing the power to do goodPorter County has so many excellent nonprofit organizations doing good each day. By strengthening their efforts, we help them to do even more. This past year, with your help, the Foundation was able to distribute nearly $1.9 million in scholarships and grants to nonprofit organizations. The Boys & Girls Clubs, and Lakeshore Paws are just two of the 39 organizations the Foundation supported along with Community Fund grants in 2014.

Music to our earsGrant helps Boys & Girls Clubs to reach middle school students

A grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County enabled the Valparaiso facility to create a digital music studio with a coffee house vibe for middle school students. The project partners the Club with Studio 6, where eight new music stations teach middle schoolers to reach their creative potential as they learn the values of self-control, trust, unity, diligence, ingenuity, and optimism. “Middle school students are at a transitional age. We’ve found that if we can engage them at this age, we can make a big impact in helping them to develop into productive citizens,” said Alison Martin, Director of Resource Development for Boys & Girls Clubs.

1,400 dogs… and countingGrant helps Lakeshore Paws to accept five times as many abandoned dogs

Lakeshore Paws has been rescuing abandoned and unwanted dogs since 2011, finding homes for more than 1,400 dogs (and counting), preventing them from ending up in shelters or even euthanized. Yet, their efforts were limited by a small intake facility that could only accept three dogs at a time. A Foundation grant provided the intake facility with an additional 15 quarantined kennels, making a huge difference in the ability to rescue dogs. “Instantly we were able to save more dogs, especially puppies who are so susceptible to disease and illness that they must be isolated when we first accept them. We’ve been able to welcome puppies and their moms who might otherwise have been euthanized at other facilities,” said Jeanne Sommer, Executive Director for Lakeshore Paws.

The Circle of Promise recognizes and thanks the wonderful individuals and families who choose to support the Foundation with an annual gift of $1,000 or more. Each gift means that the Foundation can continue to make a positive impact on lives throughout Porter County. We thank the following for their generosity as 2014 Circle of Promise members.

Identifying our community’s greatest needs and then finding ways to do the greatest good As the hub for Porter County nonprofit organizations and the people who support them, the Foundation helps to identify and address Porter County’s greatest needs:

HomelessnessThe Foundation helps to support organizations that improve shelter options for local residents, including Rebuilding Together – Duneland, a nonprofit organization that has assisted more than 180 families in making their homes safer, more efficient, and more accessible. By helping people to remain sheltered and independent in their own homes, Rebuilding Together – Duneland is making a positive impact on homelessness in our community.

LiteracyEnhancing literacy begins in childhood. Studies show that children who are developmentally ready for kindergarten are four times more likely to graduate from high school. Further, high school graduates earn an average of $500,000 more, live nine years longer, and are six times less likely to be arrested than those who do not graduate. To assist in enhancing kindergarten-readiness, the Foundation supports Parents as Teachers, a nonprofit organization that enhances child development and school achievement through parent education.

Substance Abuse The Foundation engaged Community Solutions to facilitate a county wide conversation on the issue of substance abuse called “Getting to Results.” This group of community stakeholders is working to create strategies and identify measurement indicators to achieve the desired result “that all youth will be substance free” in Porter County. It will take the collective wisdom and commitment from all of us to really move the needle in a positive direction on this issue. “Getting to Results” is a major step in that direction.

BUILDING

“The impact of this grant is far reaching. Because of the Foundation’s

support in just the last two years alone, 325 children who had no other

preschool experiences are better prepared to enter school, which makes

them twice as likely to be reading at grade level by third grade. Additionally,

their families are better prepared as well to play the critical roles needed in the ever changing demands required

for today’s school success.”

—Jill Stricker, Executive Director, Parents as Teachers of Porter County
