Two iconic sporting events just took place on Patriot’s Day weekend. Two very different
stories, but both show how, we as a Nation, are inspired by people overcoming the odds, no matter what.The first event was the Golf Masters Tournament. Australian golfer, Adam Scott, last year had a blow out at the British Open. With a 4 shot lead and only 4 holes left to play, he suddenly imploded, losing to Ernie Els, whom won by 1 shot. He was crushed, would he ever win a Major? All we heard after that, was that Adam Scott may never recover after such a meltdown. Was he strong enough mentally to overcome yet another loss and make a comeback? Watching the tournament that Sunday I was rooting for Adam. Could he finally win a big title, instead of crashing and burning at the final hour? He certainly had the talent. This time he came back from being 3 shots behind, to reach a playoff for the title. He held his nerve and managed to sink a magnificent 12 foot putt, to become the first Australian ever to win the Masters in its 79 year history. This time he managed to win under intense pressure; his whole nation watching the game as if their Nation’s future depended on his win. He managed to overcome all his past fears and failures, and win spectacularly!The second event of that weekend was the Boston Marathon. It is the world's oldest annual marathon, and
ranks as one of the world›s best-known road racing events. Held every year on Patriot’s Day, 27 000 runners participate, thousands of spectators line the streets, and countless more watch the race on television. This year, as most of you know, the nation watched in horror, as a heinous act of terror and destruction was played before our eyes. An act designed to cause mass panic, fear, and pain. But what we also saw was this incredible American resilience! As a Nation, when the chips are down, every-day people dig deep, and help others in their moment of need.There will always be individuals or groups that focus their energies on destroying and breaking down, rather than creating and building. The reality is, that bad things can happen to good people. Fortunately, out of this tragedy comes an understanding that ordinary everyday people are capable of extraordinary things. The American nation says, “Don’t mess with us! No
matter what the odds, We will get through this together and be stronger on the other end!” Bad situations bring us together as a Nation of compassion; a Nation with soul; a Nation that cares for other human beings. We are fighters and survivors. The outpouring love, help and generosity of spirit the day of the bombing once again showed the very best of our Nation! Runners kept running to the closest hospital to donate blood, people opened their homes and wifi services, restaurants opened their doors to assist any way they could. No matter what terrors we see or hear about, we live in a world that’s truly amazing! Good, bad or ugly, it’s all part of the ride of life. But know this - we all have greatness to achieve and overcome any challenge. Stay strong! Best Day Ever, Ralph
