Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Reading together with parental engagement is fun, entertaining and
informative. It helps the child to perform better in school, foster an early and lifelong
love for reading. It enriches childs vocabulary, open doors to many possibilities, it
promotes creativity and imagination but most importantly it improves childs critical
thining.
The significant progress in reaching out the families has not been made by
some schools and teachers. There are some parents who were informed about what
is happening in school, give the necessary information on how their ids performed in
school and they are lucy because they are able to participate in activities with their
children. !ut it is noteworthy, that there are some schools who do not fully give
attention about the importance of parents participation. It is significant to elicit the
involvement of parents to their childrens learning also to establish a home"school
relationship wherein both teachers and parents should cooperate to attain learning ofthe pupils particularly on reading sills.#Clar 1$$%& ' partnership between the
parents and the teachers will lead the childs progress socially, mentally and
emotionally as they grow old. #Clar 1$$%&

Reading is the most important accomplishment of a childs early school
e)perience. This has been the consensus and conclusion made by educators, school
administrators and community leaders. Educating parents provides information,
instruction and support regarding how they can be their childs first leader and partner
in education. *indergarteners gain additional advances in their sills and boost their
confidence through the anticipated improvements to their home environment as their
parents now what parental engagement is. +rom early childhood, the home
becomes school and after dinner the dinner table might become the family study
table.
The parents role in educating their children starts as early as the toddler years
#%" years old&. -arents simultaneously educate their children while they strengthen
the parent"child attachment. -arents might mistaenly believe they are ust spending
/uality time with their child when they are actually developing useful life sills.
The Convention on the Rights of the Child, 'rticle 0 1$$ states that States
Parties shall respect the responsibilities, rights and duties of parents or, where
applicable, the members of the extended family or community as provided for by local
custom, legal guardians or other persons legally responsible for the child, to provide,
in a manner consistent with the involving capacities of the child, appropriate direction
and guidance in the exercise by the rights recognized in the present Convention.

2ne of the effects of parental authority upon the persons of the children is
under 'rticle ((3 4ection 1, which states that children rights to keep them in their
company, to support, educate and instruct them by right precept and good example,
and to provide for their upbringing in keeping with their means.
!owlby shared the psychoanalytic view that early e)periences in childhoodhave an important influence on development and behavior later in life. 2ur early
attachment style is established during childhood though the infant"caregiver
relationship. 5uring the childs formative years, it is critical to provide them with
different reading e)periences. 5eveloping a passion to read is important since this
opens up new worlds for children. 4imilarly, learning how to read is essential for day"
to"day survival. 6aority of the nowledge sills and values needed for their success
in school and life in general is ac/uired through reading. !oos are indeed a
repository of nowledge and the storehouse of the wisdom of ages. !oos have a
uni/ue ability and have powerful means of passing on the heritage of a world culture.
!y reading boos we are able to broaden our limited boundaries of space and time
and e)perience a greater hori7on.
Through boos as well we open ourselves to the ideas of others, thus, we
directly encounter the great minds of history.

' more contemporary argument emphasi7es reading literacy as a tool for
success. 'ccess to information helps people mae better decisions. -eople who read
are better informed consumers and voters. They have better control of their lives and
sport a higher responsibility of maing a greater number of successful choices.
Reading is therefore deemed as a sill necessary for full participation in our society
and this is achievable if both the school and family wor actively and are engaged.
+amily engagement is important in the educational success of the child9
therefore reading can be one of the activities that parents and their children can do
together.

Theoretica !ra"e#or$
'ccording to 0ygotsy #1$:& the child sees to understand the instruction
provided by their parents, and then internali7e the information ac/uired, using it to
guide or regulate their own performance. 0ygotsy identifies parents are able to
provide the child with ;scaffolding< to support the childs development sills.
The dynamics of long = term relationship between human is e)plained by >ohn
!owlby in his 'ttachment Theory. It states that there is a lasting effect of habits in the
engagement between parents and their children in terms of reading.
It is more important to now that engagement and reading habits is not ust a
/uic step, but a long term and unending relationship between parents and their
children.
