Built for the world exhibition and designed by architects Franz Fröhlich and Anton Oelzelt in the typical style of Vienna’s Ringstrasse Hotel de France first opened its doors in 1873 as guest house of Emperor Franz Joseph I. One of its most famous guests was Anton Bruckner who stayed in the hotel between 1876 and 1895. In this period he wrote his world-renowned sixth symphony.

The origins of the hotel, which is located in the historic 6th Viennese district, Mariahilf, can be traced back to the 17th century. Among its most well-known guests were members of the Strauss dynasty, in particular the two renowned composers Johann and Josef Strauss.
