THE VILLAGE NEWS BELMONT VILLAGE AT CARDIFF BY THE SEA OCTOBER 2017 Sadie’s Corner Greetings and grab your coat! We’ve had a hot summer. I’m so glad it is beginning to cool here in sunny San Diego. Thank you to all the family members, residents and visitors who continue to check in and out at the front desk. Our Accushied program has proven very beneficial for us behind the scenes. Although we have NOT had to screen anyone out, it is a great way for us to know who is in the community at any given time in case we have a real emergency. As a reminder to all residents, if you leave the community from L2, please call the front desk so we can check you out. Along those lines, please remember that our exit doors are all alarmed now. In response to the industry trend of elopements, we decided to connect the doors to the stairwells, the exit doors and a number of internal doors that lead to an exit. They are tied to our new and improved radio call system. If you exit/enter an alarmed door, all staff will be notified and will do a resident head count in response to the alarm. This is our commitment to keeping our residents safe at Belmont Village and we appreciate your support. Notice less chatter on the radios? Belmont Village upgraded the call light software and is now using iPods for the direct care staff. We continue to use the radios for communication with the front desk and housekeeping, but the pals and nurses now have iPods. This is great for tracking communication. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to talk on the radio and not being heard because of traffic. Now we have a quiet and thorough tracking mechanism for the emergency call light system. And as stated above, the iPods are also connected to the exit alarms throughout the community. Even though the days will be getting shorter, Belmont won’t be short on fun things to do. Last month left us hoppin’ with our fun ’50s party, and this month we discover Bavarian culture through Oktoberfest! Did you know that southern Bavaria was once known for its terrible water supply, and in order to avoid cholera the locals would wet their whistles with the safer alternative of beer? Have a wonderful Halloween and read on to see what other special events we have planned for this month! Circle of Friends

As the dog days of summerare at a close, the time to go tonational parks is now! OnNational Parks Day, COFresidents participated in adebate on whether or notpeople should be charged a userfee for general entry andrecreation in the park.

“A user fee is necessary formaintenance of the park,” GlennG. said. “Who else is going topay for it?”

However, Lillian disliked a feeon the grounds that the parkswere created for everyoneto enjoy.

“A fee of $30 or more pervehicle is high for families whomay not be able to afford it,”she said. “It’s even moreexpensive if the parks charge afee per person.”

In addition to debates likethis, COF enjoyed making theirown mini pizzas for Pizza PizazzDay. For William Taft and FlagDay, they created a no-bake flagcheesecake.

“No bake? So that means noegg, or flour,” Marcia N. said.

She was right. This cake onlyrequired mascarpone cheese, cream cheese, heavy whippingcream, sugar, and a splash oflemon juice! Blueberries andstrawberries made up the starsand stripes!

Our COF activities are alwaysenriched by the input of thegroup, especially when theyshare their past experiences.
