Hand-Washing TipWith cold and flu season

underway, it’s more importantthan ever to wash your hands tofight germs. While many of uswere taught to always use soapand warm water, the Centers forDisease Control and Preventionreports that when it comes tokilling bacteria, the temperature ofthe water doesn’t matter—theamount of time spent scrubbingdoes. Using cold water will saveenergy as well as prevent the skinon your hands from becomingcracked and dry.

Fact or Fiction: MythsAbout the Common Cold

In the thick of cold and fluseason, people will believe justabout anything in order to feelbetter and prevent any ickyencounters. But does science backthe advice you’ve been followingfor years? Here are some commoncold remedies and preventiontechniques from WebMD.com andthe truth behind their claims:

Claim No. 1: Washing hands iscritical. Fact: Colds are spread bytouching someone or somethingwith cold-causing viruses and thentouching your nose, eyes ormouth. Wash hands thoroughlyand often.

Claim No. 2: Feed a cold, starvea fever. Fiction: There’s no solidevidence that colds get better withfood or that you shouldn’t eatwhen feeling feverish. It’s moreimportant to listen to your bodyand eat when you’re hungry.

Claim No. 3: Bundle up oryou’ll catch a cold. Fiction: Whilecolds are more common in colderseasons, you can’t catch one fromlow temperatures.

Claim No. 4: Taking a showerwill make you feel better. Fact: Ahot shower can loosen cloggednasal passages to help youbreathe.

Claim No. 5: You’ll catch a coldby going outside with wet hair.Fiction: A wet head will just makeyou cold. It won’t give you a cold. You catch a cold from germs.
