Hello and

welcome to the

June edition of

‘The Viewer’

We often entertain our teenage

children with stories of how life was

when we grew up. Their favourite topic

is tales of the world without computers

and mobile phones, and of great

amusement is the thought that the

phone wouldn’t fit in your pocket.

The first I used which was truly

mobile, had a battery pack which was

the size and weight of a large shoebox

filled with lead, and the first laptop

computers were not really portable, as I

remember, they were so heavy, at best

they were ‘transportable’.

It has been said that it was a simpler

world then, but having the ability to

work from home, to stay in touch with

friends and family, to buy online and

have it delivered to my door and to find

out almost anything I want instantly is

fantastic. One other thing I love about

the internet is that we can have people

working on the magazine and it doesn’t

matter where they live.

Still there is a limit! We all still need

local tradespeople, gardeners, garages,

hairdressers and of course some one to

fix our computers when they go wrong.

That’s what this magazine is all about, a

choice of services in one handy guide

and local events for the days when you

feel like interacting with the real world

rather than just the virtual one!

On that note, I wish you all a great

month and hope you enjoy reading the

June issue.

Until next time!

An EACH band

for your hand

E ast Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has launched a new wristband to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity. EACH support families

and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The EACH wristbands are in the charity’s branded purple and orange colours and feature the EACH logo. They’ll be on sale online, in EACH shops and at fundraising events.

Melanie Chew, EACH Director of Fundraising, said: “We’re really pleased with the new wristbands & are confident they’ll be popular with our supporters. They’re a great way to raise funds and because they’re really col-ourful they’ll be noticed and help us to raise the profile and awareness of EACH too.”

The wristbands are available from the EACH website www.each.org.uk/wristband and cost £1.50 including postage and packaging. They will also be sold in EACH shops and at events for £1.

The launch of the wristbands follows the success of The EACH Bracelet which was designed by Ed Sheeran’s mum Imogen, features o range and purp le ‘smartie-style’ beads and retails at £10. The EACH Bracelet was worn by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge when she visited The Tree-house in March last year which boosted sales.

For more information about EACH, including forthcoming events and how you can help raise funds, visit www.each.org.uk or call the C amb r i d g e s h i r e t e am o n : 01223 205180.

w as a case of double-oh-heaven for Land Rover at the New York

Motor Show as it managed to

steal the limelight for the launch of its new

Range Rover Sport thanks to a rather special

unveiling by none other than Daniel Craig.

The Bond star helped the British manufacturer

deliver the first car to the press launch in a

live drive through the streets of Manhattan.

The $1 million stunt saw sections of the city

closed at rush hour and it had all the

razzamatazz of the Oscars.

One of Land Rover’s most important

models, the Sport has notched up nearly

304,000 worldwide sales since it arrived in

2005. Now, following the successful births of

the Evoque and Range Rover, it’s the racy

middle brother’s time to shine.

Based on the same aluminium platform as

the Range Rover, but with 75 per cent of the

parts changed, the Sport ushers in an

Evoque-esque look, clever new technology,

and some seriously impressive statistics.

Powering the top-of-the-range model is a

5.0-litre supercharged V8, producing 503bhp

and 625Nm of torque. With a tuned exhaust

system, it sounds incredible as it powers its

way to 60mph in five seconds.

The popular SDV8 diesel unit also makes a

welcome return. With 332bhp and a mighty

700Nm of torque, it can crack 60mph in 6.5

seconds. There are further diesel and petrol

units to pick from, but of more interest is the

hybrid which is set to arrive later this year and

combines a 3.0-litre diesel engine with a 50kw

battery, a big leap forward for the model.

Improvements have been made across

the board. The new Sport is 33% lighter than

its predecessor (that’s the weight of six av-

erage adults), the body is 25% stiffer and on

average it’s 24% more efficient.

Clever new technology on the Range Rover Sport includes an iPhone and Android app that lets you connect with their car. It can guide you back to where you parked it, tell you how much fuel is left, file company car mileages via email and even alert you if it thinks it’s about to be nicked. The clever kit includes in-car wifi for up to eight devices, a tracking system to aid recovery and the ability to dial emergency services in the event of a crash and alert them of your location.

A camera on the front of the car reads road signs as you pass them, displaying speed limits and over-taking restrictions on the dash. There’s also a head-up display that shows speed and navigation instructions.

Parking scrapes can also be avoided with a warning system that tells you if a car is coming while reversing out of a bay and an alarm can tell you if you’re wading too deep in the water (a dip into anything over 850mm could result in big bills).

Larger families will be pleased to hear there’s now a seven-seat option too. The seats are only really for kids, but electrically rise and lower from the flat floor. The tailgate gets power while the doors now have a soft-close option.

Inside, the designers have worked hard to make it even more luxurious, with more metal on show and a higher, wraparound dash. The centre console is even chilled and fits a full bottle of champagne in it. There’s a 23-speaker stereo system and rear seat entertainment options too.

Pricing, as you’d expect, is rather premium. The top-of-the-range supercharged V8 costs £81,550, with entry level models, a “more affordable” £51,550. Time to visit the bank manager… because this is one highly desirable car.

Have you ever

wondered why being

hugged feels so good,

especially at those low

moments in life?

T he reason of course, lays in science, in a hormone which also acts as a

neurotransmitter (in case you don't know,

that's a chemical in brain cells, which helps

pass on messages).

This very special hormone is known as

oxytocin, and slowly researchers are finding

it has some unusual functions in our body's.

It regulates trust and morality and so it is

very important for human behaviour,

particularly in relationship interaction. It

makes us feel safe, and its feedback

messages to the brain is that everything is

good, everything is all right.

Oxytocin is released in the body during

breast feeding, which is brilliant for the

mother baby bonding process. When we

hug, hold hands, dance with a partner,

even when we pray. It’s also released into

the bloodstream during massage and

bodywork too… which is why these things

can be therapeutic and health enhancing.

By our very evolution humans are born

to be social, & Oxytocin helps us navigate

our social world build relationships where

we can feel relaxed and content. Oxytocin

builds behaviours showing compassion and

kindness, generosity and forgiveness, and

as mentioned earlier it lets us trust others.

In some studies researchers have used

synthetic Oxytocin to reduce stress levels,

so this particular hormone out trumps

cortisol, the fight or flight hormone. Other

researchers have shown that while there is

Oxytocin streaming through our body we

see happiness as opposed to depression. I

wonder if this hormone is the scientific basis

behind the saying 'Love conquers all'? If

that's the case then we need to be doing

the things which encourage our body's

oxytocin levels. Get dancing with a partner

or hug someone you are close to, for at

least 20 seconds and it will improve your

heart rate, lower your blood pressure and

lower your stress levels. You could also try a

massage or regular bodywork for the

added therapeutic benefits that gives you.

In today's chaotic existence we can

sometimes use all the help we can get in

terms of feeling good. If oxytocin does

what the experts say it does and there is an

abundance of it in our system, and you can

achieve that abundance by simply hugging

or getting a relaxing massage, then its

pleasing to think we might eradicate those

other chemicals in our system which cause

us to feel down or depressed.

levels in the body, go to www.touchofhealing.co.uk or call

Peterborough Heritage Festival returns for 2013

T his summer, make sure you don’t miss out on attending the popular historical ex-travaganza that is the Peterborough Heritage Festival 2013, the UK’s only multi-period living history festival. Now in its 5th year, the Peter-borough Heritage Festival will be a unique chance to experience 2,000 years of history.

Held in the historic heart of the city centre, the festival will take place Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June. There will also be various fringe events happening in the city from Saturday 15th to Sunday 30th June.

This year’s Heritage Festival will feature over 300 costumed re-enactors from some of the country’s top Living History groups, giving you a chance to meet all sorts of colourful characters, from Iron Age warriors to World War II airmen. Cathedral Square will also be hosting a packed programme of live period music, falconry displays and spectacular battle demonstrations.

The theme this year is science and innovation, with a road show on St John’s

Square in association with the Natural History Museum. Try some hands-on science activities & come face-to-face with life-sized dinosaurs!

The period market will be back on the main Cathedral green, including displays of historic crafts and trades alongside a chance to go shopping for a historically themed gift. Alongside a craft fair on Church Street, there will also be a chance to relax with the family in the Children’s Zone an activity area for the kids with jesters, storytellers, games & activities.

Keep up to date with all events going on during the Heritage Festival by visiting www.vivacity-peterborough.com.

T he irony is that Daltrey and co. have now reached the stage in life they once

demonised and decided that maybe it ain't so bad after all. What the 21 year-old Daltrey didn’t know, you see, was that like wine, cheese and Stephen Fry, he would keep on improving with age. Much like another legendary rockstar, similarly advanced in years, whom I had the pleasure of seeing recently at Koko in Camden, one Wilko Johnson, formerly of Dr Feelgood.

Who is Wilko Johnson, I hear (some of) you cry? Well, don’t worry if you haven’t heard of him. I didn’t know a great deal about Wilko myself until a friend offered me a last-minute ticket to his gig, but I soon discovered I was being inducted into a very special circle. Wilko’s career has spanned five decades and been notable for chart hits, relentless touring & a legendary live act. In early 2013 he was diagnosed with untreatable pancreatic cancer &, refusing chemotherapy, has been given just months to live. This gig was due, in all likelihood, to be one of his last.

Stepping into Koko that night, you could quite easily have been at B&Q’s Summer Sale. The place was a sea of bald heads belonging to beer-bellied men in their fifties and sixties, and I suddenly felt very young and self-consciously skinny. This was rather refreshing because, now that I'm in my early thirties, I'm generally aware of being slightly above the average age at most gigs I go to. Prior to Wilko’s show, the most recent gig I had attended was at East London’s Queen Of Hoxton and was hosted by an edgy electro band of the sort

that features more laptops than humans. I could quite easily have been twice the age of many of my fellow Hoxtonian punters, mere children who know little to nothing of Blur vs Oasis and consider living with anything less than fibre-optic broadband an abuse of their human rights.

And so, standing there among a crowd of men twice my age, I was concerned about feeling like an outsider - but instead I was welcomed into the fold with open arms. Wilko fans are a wonderfully inclusive club, bursting with joie de vivre and hopelessly devoted to their idol. One guy had seen Wilko two-hundred times & received personal thank-you letters from the man himself; another was so overwhelmed at this being the last gig that he was dewy-eyed before the show even began.

The set itself was astonishing. Wilko was mesmerising, an extraordinarily accomplished musician and one of the best guitarists I have ever seen. He hardly said a word all night; he just played, & played gloriously, for near-on two unforgettable hours, not flagging for a single second. It was a master class in rock 'n' roll, made all the more extraordinary by his age and experience and I left Camden with one prevailing thought in mind. Wilko, Roger and the rest of you golden oldies, thank god you failed in your quest and actually did manage to get old. Because the world will be a far poorer place when you’re gone.

Chris is a freelance writer and musician with internationally-renowned rock band The Lightyears. Voted the UK's BEST POP/ROCK ACT at the Indy Awards, they’ve played Wembley Stadium, toured across four continents and released a record with Sting's producer. Chris has recently completed his first book, "Mockstars", based on The Lightyears' tour diaries. Find out more at www.MockstarsTheNovel.com.

Heat Stroke & Sunburn

S ummertime a fabulous time of year: blue skies, warm days and long evenings – but if you’re not careful the hot

weather can cause problems like heat stroke & sunburn - not just for us but also for our pets.

Hopefully everyone has seen the RSPCA’s summer advice: “dogs die in hot cars” and hopefully no one would chance leaving their dog in a car on a warm day. Heat stroke is a serious summer problem which can affect all animals, and not just animals left inside a car.

What is Heat Stroke? Heat stroke occurs when the body’s temperature reaches dangerously high levels causing direct injury to body tissues, which ultimately can cause multi-organ failure and death. As the body’s temperature rises, animals will try to compensate by panting. Panting results in evaporation of moisture from the mouth, which aims to cool the blood. If the ambient temperature is just too high then panting cannot cool the body enough & the animal’s internal temperature can rise dangerously.

Vets also see heat stroke in animals exercised outside in hot weather – dogs who love playing with balls etc… might not know when they need to stop, owners of dogs like this are advised to call a time out or change the routine to evening exercise whilst the weather is hot.

Some breeds find it harder to cope with high temperatures – for example bulldogs with their squashed noses often have a lot of soft tissue at the back of their throat which can make breathing more difficult for them – this means it’s harder to lose heat from breathing and panting on hot days.

What can you do to help keep your pet cool? - Leave a window open or fan going, especially if you are leaving pets for any period of time - Provide areas of shade out of direct sunlight -Always make water available, if you are unable to check pets water level regularly, leave multiple sources for them.

What are the signs of Heat Stroke and what

should you do if you suspect it? - Excessive panting or noticeable change in breathing - Bloody diarrhoea - A dull and lethargic animal, this will then lead to collapse and then unconsciousness in heat stroke cases.

If you suspect you pet has heat stoke consult your Vet immediately.

Sunburn Another common summer problem is sunburn. Pink skinned animals will burn very easily and the most at risk areas are places where the coat is thin, for example the ears and nose. You can apply sunblock to these areas, it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it.

Try to ensure shaded areas are available if you know your pet is going to be outside for a prolonged period in the sun and plan log walks in wooded areas rather than open fields.

Sunburn is painful when it happens, you might see blisters or scabs along the edges of the ears, but it can also result in serious long-term consequences: Skin cancers can result when tissue is damaged, especially the chronic damage caused by repeated burning. If your pet does get burnt you should visit your Vets so that the area/s can be proactively monitored going forward.

Never put your pet in a bath of cold or ice water, instead offer a water soaked towel or space to enjoy a cool draft that will sooth and lower the temperate of burnt skin.

Enjoy the summer weather but be mindful of the risks to your pets as the sun and heat can have serious consequences. But don’t worry, with a bit of foresight the risk of heat stroke and sunburn are easily reduced and your pets will love the extra attention given to them!

HOSPITAL AT HOME!

What is Hospital at Home?

THE HOSPITAL AT HOME FRIENDS GROUP

Registered Charity No. 284933

T he Hospital at Home Service is a unique concept in home hospital care. Patients, in certain circumstances, may be given

the choice of being nursed in hospital or in their own home. All Patients in the Peterbor-ough, Whittlesey and Oundle areas are eligible providing that the GP, District Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse and Carer if applicable, will accept responsibility for the patient and that the patient fits the simple criterion, which is:

Without Hospital At Home, The Patient Would Be In Hospital

The fact that patients need not be parted from their family or familiar surroundings has proved beneficial to a speedier recovery. We do nurse a proportion of terminally ill patients who can remain at home surrounded by their love ones.

There is nothing for the patient /

family to pay

The Hospital at Home Friends Group is a registered charity that raises funds to pay

for nursing hours for the Hospital at Home

Service. One of their many fund raising

activities is a 200 Club. Members pay £1.00

per month and, while helping the Service,

can win a substantial cash prize.
