‘Don’t Give Up’

Committee Member Garry Brinn shares his story

Garry was already suffering from type 2 diabetes when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2014 with his main symptoms being a tremor and the feeling of not being good enough at his job.

As a result of his Parkinson’s Garry was medically retired.

Garry’s symptoms made him very tired and often quite unwell, as well as suffering from painful feet which made walking a challenge. Sadly as a consequence Garry made a difficult decision & gave up his favourite pastime “golf” something he had played to a very good standard playing off a handicap of 12.

This was a very low time for him however after consulting his GP Garry was advised that exercise and walking was something that he really should be doing on a regular basis and would help to slow down the progression of Parkinson’s, as well as improving his circulation and stop his painful feet. What better

way to combine the two by playing golf!

Garry did return to the golf course & although it was a challenge he persevered with the support from his golfing buddies. They gave him tips & advice about how to deal with his tremor by using a different grip on his club and by concentrating and focussing more.

The help & encouragement from his friends & colleagues at the golf club helped improve Garry’s confidence and the exercise has made a real difference both to his game, mobility and has

taken away the pain in his feet. He can deal with life much better now and enjoys spending quality time with his Wife, daughters & Grandchildren.

Garry is now playing at least three times a week and has turned his game around getting back to a handicap of 15 after starting at a handicap of 18 again and in the past three months he has won three competitions.

The positivity of his friendships and the encouragement he has received has really highlighted the importance of raising Parkinson’s awareness to your family & friends and Garry’s story also demonstrates how exercise can help with mobility & balance & slows down the progression of Parkinson’s symptoms. For Garry he’s back enjoying whats he’s loves, playing golf.

Branch members Harry & Lynda Green’s son ‘Simon Green’ gets on his bike for an amazing 100 mile bike ride challenge to fundraise for Peterborough Parkinson’s

24 June 2017

Simon Tells His Story

2 Years ago my dad was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Parkinson's Disease with Lewy Body Dementia (LBD).

His physical and mental decline has been steadily progressive and it is very hard for all his family, especially my mum, who is his main carer, to watch and manage on a daily basis.

Without research and new medications, realistically at this point there is no hope of any improvement, and short term prognosis is not good.

This will not be an easy challenge for me, 100 miles on a mountain bike in one day, with 50% plus being off road. However if I can raise my target of £1,500, or hopefully more, to help the Best Man I know, and other sufferers like him it will be worth all the training and pain over the next couple

of months. I know that you all donate to Charities close to your heart every year, but if you could spare even

an extra £1 for Parkinson's UK I know it would be greatly appreciated Donations can be made through justgiving.com & typing in Simon's - 'Solstice 100 Mountain Bike

Sportive’ or by giving your donation to any branch committee member

Blue Badgeby

Celia Patience

Last week I applied for a Blue Badgeand was most surprised to find

that in just three days I’d got oneand can leave parking problems behind

I’ve always baulked against itbecause others need one more than Ibut now my walking is not so good

I feel I’m can justify

After fifteen years spent copingI have only just now conceded

that I am not as good as I once was and a little help is needed

I wont take a place from the infirmand not from the elderly

as they deserve looking after.Hey, doesn’t that just describe me

So now I have my Blue Badgethough it goes against the grain

I suppose they really must think I’m illand I’m never one to complain.
