It was while walking together

on a road from Jerusalem to

Emmaus that two followers

of Jesus were conversing,

wondering and searching for

answers. Their friend and

teacher, Jesus had just been

cruelly put to death on a

cross. Why and for what

reason they could not

comprehend. How had their

world and society

deteriorated to the point of

killing the innocent? And

now some of their friends

had told them that they had

seen a vision of angels who

said that Jesus was alive.

What were they to believe?

Their thoughts and emotions

raised issues of doubt and

faith.

With each step drawing them

closer to Emmaus, a stranger

came alongside them and

listened to them talking.

They shared their frustrations

with life, their

disappointments with God.

And it was then that Jesus

revealed himself to them,

3 pastor's page

giving meaning to his

suffering, death and

resurrection. Jesus

interpreted to them the things

about himself in all of

scriptures, giving meaning to

their wondering and

searching. We as followers of

Jesus are entering a time of

Lent, a journey of 40 days in

which we too hope that Jesus

will come alongside us. And I

suspect we, like those first

followers want to find

meaning for our lives. We too

are searching for a place of

well-being somewhere

between our own doubts and

faith.

I invite you to take the first

step on a walk during our 40

days of Lent, to let Jesus come

alongside you to reveal his

desire for your life. This walk

with Jesus is a walk of dying to

self, dying to destructive

habits brought on by doubts

and disappointments and

rising to new life, a life of

meaning, a life of wellbeing

both spiritually and physically.

Jesus comes alongside us to

reveal a life filled with hope,

which is Jesus’ desire for each

of us. Thus, Lent is a time of

dying and rising in Christ.

With each step we take

together during Lent, we will

be dying and rising in Christ

both on Sunday morning and

Wednesday evenings. We will

be conversing and confessing

our destructive habits that fill

us with doubt and

disappointments. We will be

listening to Jesus’ desire for

our Spiritual well-being which

includes: physical well-being,

social/interpersonal well-

being, emotional well-being,

intellectual well-being,

vocational well-being, and

financial well-being.

During our walk we will be

encouraged to find a place of

Spiritual well-being. On

Sundays we will learn from

Jesus through sermons his

desires for us. On

Wednesday’s we will live out

his desire through

opportunities that will inspire

us. On the weekend of March

5th

- 6th

you will be presented

with a packet of information

which will prepare you in

taking the first step. On Ash

Wednesday, March 9th

together we begin our 40

steps to Emmaus. A team has

been working hard to make

our journey through Lent a

very meaningful and life

changing experience. Please

take the time to read “The

Wholeness Wheel” insert that

is included in this Tidings and

related articles about Lent.

Then get ready to take the

first of 40 steps to Emmaus.

4 food for thought….a note from your Associate Pastor

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who

listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at

himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have

heard, but doing it—they will be

blessed in what they do. James 1: 22-25

Although Martin Luther may

have referred to the book of James as

the “gospel of straw”, modern day

Christians realize that it has a great

deal to say to those who say they are

followers of Jesus. It was written as a

letter to the church at large during a

time of persecution; a time when

being church was not popular and

could be downright dangerous.

Please notice; I said being church, not

doing or going to church. I am

convinced that church is not about

the building, the pastors, the

programs or even the wonderful

music. The church is the living,

breathing body of Christ called to be

the hands and feet of Jesus in our

world today. In other words, WE are

the church; not just the pastors or

staff, not just the council, not just

those whom you see serving during

worship, but all of us. Each and every

person who calls themselves a

follower of Jesus are to be about

living out their faith in real and

tangible ways; we hear the word and

the word is meant to propel us into

action. James says, that if we don’t,

it’s like we really have no clue who

we are.

But we do know who we are

and whose we are. We are reminded

every time there is a baptism or a

remembrance of baptism; we are

named and claimed by God and

sealed with the mark of the cross,

forever! We belong to God. We are

claimed by a God who lifts us out of

the despair of death and gives us the

freedom of new life. If you have ever

had a brush with death or know

someone who has, you know that

after that event, each and every day

is special, to be cherished and fully

lived out. It is no different once we

grasp the fact that each and every

day we have been given new life in

Jesus and are called to live out those

lives in Christ fully. If we are to carry

out this fullness that God wants for

us, we will have to engage our faith in

such a way so that we are not just

“hearers” of the word, but “doers.”

We have been given this new life for

the purpose of the kingdom. It’s true

that we might be fine, upstanding

people and not letting our light shine.

But Jesus calls his followers to be

bear bold witness to his presence in

our life. However, this witness is not

that of a bystander, but rather that of

someone who seeks a deeper

relationship with the master.

This letter is an invitation into

that relationship; an invitation to

recognize who you are and whose

you are in Christ and to act on that

knowledge in a way that is visible to

the world. It is an invitation to live

out your new life in such a way that

without saying a word, your faith is

completely obvious to all around you.

This is an invitation to step outside of

your comfort zone and serve God’s

people as the church, the hands and

feet of the living Jesus. Like scripture

says, the harvest is plentiful, but far

too often, the harvesters are few.

Many of your sisters and brothers

have already answered the call to this

new life. I just wanted to make

certain that you knew; you’re

invited!

Serving with you,

Oh No, Shrove Tuesday

Again?

It was Shrove Tuesday and Mrs Thomas

was making pancakes for her sons, Aaron

6, and Kelvin 8.

As usual, the brothers began to argue

over who should get the first pancake.

Their mother saw a wonderful opportu-

nity for a moral lesson.

'If Jesus were sitting at the table, He

would say, "Let my brother have the first

pancake".'

Quick as a flash Kelvin turned to Aaron

and said, 'Aaron, today you can be Jesus!'

Just because “Patch” doesn’t go for

the pancakes, don’t let that stop

you!

We are heading into our Lent season

with thoughts of “whole wellness”,

mind, body, and soul. So let’s make

a point of getting our “act together”.

Use your Shrove Tuesday wisely, the

Trinity Youth are hosting a Pancake

Supper Tuesday, March 8 from 5:00

pm to 7:30 pm in the Gathering

Room.

Come get the “fat” thoughts out of

your system before we begin our 40

steps. Bring everyone in the family,

Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, and

all the kids, pack up the car and

come on in! The food will be great

and the fellowship will be wonder-

ful. See you here for pancakes and

all the fixin’s.

6 musical opportunities

“Dreams…we all have dreams…” Join our Children’s Choirs as they

lead us into Lent with their musical The Tale of the Three Trees

written by Allen Pote and Tom Long. The cantata is based on a classic

American folk tale in which three young trees have big dreams for

their future. They are surprised to learn that God’s loving plan for

them is much greater than they imagined. The presentation will be in

the sanctuary of Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday evening March

5th

at 5:00 pm, and on Sunday morning March 6th

at 8:45 am.

Just wondering about Egypt.

What comes to mind when you think of Egypt? Probably

it is the news of the past week – political unrest, protest,

violence and a very uncertain future. But one could also

think of the ancient pyramids at Giza just outside Cairo or

the Egyptian Antiquities Museum --home to the remains of

pharaohs, the Gold Mask of King Tut and other ancient

treasures.

I have been thinking about all of the Bible references to

Egypt. There are over 600 of them, most of which are in

the Old Testament. The first reference is Genesis 12:10—

“Now there was a famine in the land.

So Abram went down to Egypt to

reside there as an alien.” So we learn

that at the urging of God the great

patriarch of our faith fled to Egypt

with his wife Sarai (they weren’t

Abraham and Sarah yet) to find food, a

new life and a promise.

Genesis 37 tells the story of Joseph

being sold by his brothers and taken to

Egypt where he found great favor with

his Egyptian master and eventually

was made steward over all of Egypt.

Joseph, one of God’s great and wise

leaders, remained in Egypt where he

died (at the age of 110) and was buried - according to

God’s promise given to Abraham.

Moses was born in Egypt and soon was called by God to

lead the chosen people who “groaned under Egyptian

slavery.” Moses led them out of Egypt through

persistence, courage and trust in God, surviving even the

terrible plagues. It was in Egypt at the end of the plagues

that Moses instituted the first Passover which today is

fulfilled in our celebration of Holy Communion. The

people escaped through the Red Sea to forty years of

wilderness wandering before finally going into the

Promised Land – although Moses was denied that joy.

In Matthew’s gospel we hear, “Now after they (the wise

men) had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a

dream and said; Get up, take the child and his mother, and

flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is

about to search for the child, to destroy him.”

Hopefully we can see from these few references how

important Egypt was, and I believe, is to a master plan for

God’s people -- a plan that reveals God’s will for safety,

abundant provision and freedom from tyranny. All of

which seem threatened at this time.

Just wondering if Hosni Mubarak is a modern pharaoh and

if the people of Egypt and their allies can find a way to

revisit biblical history and trust God’s plan for security and

freedom.

The art created by Kenneth Wyatt for the

Living Last Supper is on display in the lobby

by the coffee café. When you get a chance

to walk past, take a moment to stop and

look into the display case and read the

current information on the disciple’s

picture. Each week Lew Willertz has been

changing these pictures to bring this art to

our attention. Thank you Lew and Joan

Willertz, and Anita Phillips for creating the

beautiful display. Thank you Lew for your

ministry that brings The Living Last Supper

to our church each year. Don’t miss one of

this year’s presentations on either April 20th

Trinity's adult handbell choir was

formed in 1999 under the direction of

Tim Hendrickson. Beginning with three

octaves of bells purchased with

generous memorial and gift donations,

rehearsals began in September of that

year, and the first presentation to the

congregation, the hymn Holy, Holy,

Holy, was rung in October. Rousing

applause erupted upon the conclusion

of their first effort as the ringers

breathed a sigh of relief that they

actually began and ended at the same

time and that the congregation

seemed to recognize the tune!

Many of the initial ringers had never

seen up close, let alone rung, a

handbell until that first rehearsal. All

the musical symbols of bellringing

were new, and even though most

ringers read music, the difficulty was to

just play the right note at the right

time. It was fun, it was challenging,

and look how far the handbell choir

has come, now offering music with five

octaves of bells and seven octaves of

chimes as well. Eventually choosing the

name JuBELLation, and having

celebrated its 10th anniversary a few

months ago with a special worship

service, the group looks forward to

continual advancement in technique

and meaningful presentations for

Trinity's congregation.

Following the original director, Tim

Hendrickson, Dave Winegardner

stepped in to direct the choir for four

years, Roberta Houston directed

another group, and beginning in the

summer of 2008, Dianne Schoenfeld

Granstra became the current director

of the handbell program. First

rehearsals in 1999 were in the lower

level of the church, but because of

the difficulties in moving equipment

up and down between floors, the

current conference room upstairs

became a bell room, and finally those

two rooms exchanged places last

year, and our bell room is still over-

flowing. But that's a good problem

to have with so many dedicated

ringers, bells and chimes to

accommodate them.

The entire program of bellringing has

expanded to include the Rainbow

Ringers (the little kids), High Chimes

Choir (elementary school group), Mid

-High Bell Choir (6th thru 12th

graders), and Joyful Noise beginning

choir. The Singing Bells, a smaller

ensemble of handbells, offers

musical presentations occasionally in

worship, at nursing homes and senior

residences, as well as other private

parties or organizations.

Just think, Trinity did not have a

handbell choir for 56 years! And now

look and listen to the wonderful

musical and worshipful expression of

these outstanding ringers. Thanks to

all of them and to all others who have

supported their musical efforts,

especially patient and helpful spouses

and parents and friends.

10 youth calendarFebruary was a very busy month! All of the youth enjoyed a momentary slow down with two snow days in

a row early this month! I know it gave me a chance to catch my breath! We had fun bowling and going to

the Rock and Worship Roadshow. As the year goes on, we are really building relationships and learning to

work together as a team. I can see a nice sense of community forming where it once was not as prevalent.

March is bringing another very busy month our way! We are looking forward to our last winter retreat at

Springhill for Trinity Teens and the Spring Break Mission Trip to Grand Rapids and Chicago for Sr. LYO. I am

even more excited that summer is creeping closer! We have over 20 Trinity Teens signed up to go to

Confirmation Camp at Stony Lake this summer--an increase from last year! We also have over 30 Sr LYO

signed up to go on our mission trip to Middletown, Ohio mid-July! It is exciting to see the life in our youth

here at Trinity. They are able to say that even though it is still a ways until summer, their faith life is

important and they will block off weeks of time to spend in fellowship and service with one another! We

cannot thank the Trinity family enough for all of the support that they have given the youth!

Don't Forget! Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper! This is a dinner that will be served by the youth (youth

this is a chance to earn a little money for your youth account!) on Shrove Tuesday. Cost will be a free will

donation. Dinner will run from 5-7:30. We hope to see you all there, this is a GREAT opportunity to

support our youth and get your fill of milk and eggs before Lent! Any questions, please contact Hilary at
