NORTHERN OCEAN COUNTY BRANCH Volume XXXXII Number 8 May-June 2011 May-June 2011 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE– PAMELA CORATTI Hello Branch Members, As my presidency is winding down, I think about all the challenges we faced together as a branch and in spite of these challenges there were so many things to be proud of the past two years. I’m very proud of the fact that we gave out two essay awards to young people and two $1,000 scholar- ships, one to a returning women to college and the other to a high school student in honor of our be- loved Kathy Barra. I’m proud of the hard work and dedication that we put forth to pull off an auction that made a lot of money and had a following. I’m proud of the interesting programs we had, espe- cially continuing to have the bully workshop, which was always close to my heart. It has been run- ning smoother than ever! I will think about the last two years fondly even though there were personal losses and health concerns. I will still be proud of the fact that I was an AAUW branch President. Thank you all. Let’s give our new President, Pat Baroska as much support as we can. Please think about becoming part of this new collaborative board of directors. There will be less meetings and no locking people into positions that they don’t want or don’t have time for. The board will collaborate and share the responsibilities so there is no heavy burden on one person. There will still be a President, Secretary and Treasurer. That’s all we need for a branch to run says National. Call Pat if you want to be on the new board. Please come and bring friends to our Psychic Night fundraiser on May 12 th . It is always a fun night out and an easy way for the branch to make money. Thank you to Maureen Mitchell who spear headed our Flower Power Fundraiser! Excellent job Maureen! Thanks to Joanne Messina, our scholarship chair and Susan Haas, our Public Information person for all your hard work on our scholarships. “By supporting the Educational Opportunities Fund, we make a difference in the lives of women who will one day make a difference for us all. Every year, women earn their graduate degrees or complete their research because of our gifts.” (AAUW Calendar for May) Our membership voted to contribute $1,132 to the Northern Ocean County Branch Research and Project Grant. This will complete the $35,000 endowment which began as a Named Unit with an ini-tial contribution of $2,500 in 1996. In 2002 it was upgraded to the Research and Project Grant be-cause we had surpassed the $10,000 needed to establish the Grant. Congratulations to us all for ac-complishing this endeavor in 15 years. Thank you again for all of your support of the gift auction, which funded our contribution. Barbara Tuzio

AAUW-NJ Annual Meeting Pamela Coratti, Marlene Snedaker, and I attended Saturday April 16 at the Forsgate Country Club in Monroe Township. The day was so exciting and jam-packed with information that I’d like to share it with all of you. Linda Hallman, National Executive Director AAUW, spoke about “AAUW Today and Tomorrow”. Here are some of the highlights of her talk. 1. AAUW’s new Strategic Plan is more important than ever. The goals of the Plan are:

Membership Advocacy Education and Leadership Philanthropy Management

2. The One Member/One Vote will be implemented this year. Voting can be done online, at the con-vention, or by paper ballot which was mailed to all members on April 15. Please review all materials and decide what method you will use for voting. Online voting began May 1. The deadline for mail-ing paper ballots is May 31 and voting at the Convention ends June 17 at 9pm.

3. Membership Survey—Out of 9000 responses, 81% of the members were satisfied with their mem-bership and 83% said that AAUW did important work nationally. Survey respondents gave these reasons for joining: Similar interests, Asked by a friend and Believe in the mission.

4. Social Media—AAUW is on Facebook and Twitter and encourages branches to get on the web. Linda also said that AAUW was like a radio station—all you have to do is “tune in”. 5. PEARL is the acronym for AAUW. It stands for Protection, Education, Advocacy, Research, Leadership. After Linda’s presentation, AAUW-NJ members spoke about the College/University Connection, a vital component of AAUW’s promise with AAUW-NJ being uniquely suited to be a leader in developing this program. Our branch already has a connection with Georgian Court University. Next Jean Wadsworth talked about the AAUW-NJ Charitable Trust which is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. The trust is asking for contributions of $20 per member or a contribution of any amount from branches. Our branch contributed last year in memory of Bernice Coratti. After lunch a 20th Anni-versary Cake was served for dessert. Nominating Chair, Joan Odud, presented the 2011-2013 Slate of Officers which included 3 new wom-en: Carol Cohen for 3rd VP Program, Bettine Avenia for Secretary, and Beth Forman for Public Policy Director. The afternoon was devoted to the W.I.L.D. Women of Georgian Court University. Ten students and their dean, Karen Goff, discussed their experiences in the Women In Leadership Development pro-gram. Some talked about the AAUW-NJ Issues Conference at Brookdale in January, some spoke about what W.I.L.D. meant to them and how it is changing them, others about their academic and so-cial lives at GCU.

There are 4 phases in the W.I.L.D. program with one devoted to each college year. Freshman year em-phasizes the Mercy core values of personal exploration, justice, integrity, compassion, service and re-spect. Sophomore year deals with the integration of personal and professional goals. Junior year focus-es on the implementation of these goals and Senior year promotes the application of their knowledge. The women were articulate, beautiful, confident, devoted, enthusiastic, funny, sweet and young. Their presentation was a highlight and all are e-members of AAUW. The afternoon ended with the traditional basket raffle which benefits EOF and LAF. And guess who was a winner two years in a row? That’s right! I went home with a basket that was “for the birds”, put together by members of the Salem County Branch. Our beautiful “Down the Shore” basket was won by AAUW-NJ President Sally Goodson. This article may be a little long, but I needed to share with all of you to remind you what a wonderful organization AAUW is. Share PEARL, the goals of the new AAUW Strategic Plan, and the developing College/University Connection with your friends and family and invite them to join us to work for equity and education for women and girls through AAUW. My sincere thanks to all who participated, especially our highest sellers: Alice TaRLACH, Barbara Tuzio, Marie Sweeney, and Susan Haas. A final report with any additional funds will be sent to all members. Many of you forwarded the meail to friends and family as our Report Summary includes individuals out-side our organization who purchased from Flower Power and contributed to our fundraiser!
