Vicar’s Reflections

The Lord is Mindful“What is man that you think of him, mere man that you care

for him” (Ps.8:4)

Dearly beloved in Christ,

First of all, I wish you all a meaningful Christmas and a blessed New

Year.

The profound thought which Advent gives is that the Lord is mindful of

us - lowly human beings. The Psalmist exclaims “O Lord, when I

consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the

stars which Thou has ordained, what is man that Thou art mindful of

him, And the son of man - that you visit him?”. It echoes the prophetical

note of the dawning of the Messianic event.

Human beings have been created by God (but a little lower than God)

imparting to them the divine attributes of glory and honour; thus they

became the crown of all creatures. But the God-given superiority is

misused by humanity resulting in their losing the image of God. Hence

the need for Kenosis. In the New Testament Paul uses the word

Kenosis (Phil 2:7) to denote the emptying of the divine Logos or the

laying aside His divine attributes and assuming all the limitations of

human existence to reinstate humanity.

Though the Psalmist looks at mankind as a paradox, the main

emphasis is on God’s essential being and His wonderful deeds on

earth. Despite our insignificance, frailty, stubbornness and

faithlessness, He remembers us. Elsewhere King David says: “This

God - how perfect are His deeds! How dependable His words!”

(Ps.18:30). The majestic and sovereign Lord whose glory is above the

heavens, stripping off his equality with God and accepting humiliations

by his own free will may seem incompatible with God’s very nature.

But this is the tremendous mystery of the Incarnation.

This Messianic Psalm once again reminds us of our worthiness and

worthlessness. While in most of the other Psalms the Psalmist seems

upon the excellence of God. The Lord, who is mindful of us, wants us

to be mindful of others who are despised, marginalized and

downtrodden. Let the Advent herald freedom from all types of

depression and oppression.

Golden Age FellowshipThe Bi-monthly Worship Service was conducted on Friday, 6th

November 2015 at 7.30 AM. Mr. John Samuel shared the Word of God

based on his own experiences, and it was a blessing to all the

participants.

The next Bi-monthly Worship Service will be conducted on Friday, 8th

January 2016 at 7.30 AM. Your prayerful presence is requested.

The Fellowship is arranging a one-day picnic-cum-retreat for the

members on Wednesday, 9th December 2015 at Kanyakumari. The

trip will start at 6.00 AM.

The Mission House Project at Damarachanpally, Parkal Mission has

been completed, members have so far contributed Rs. 2,27,900/- We

thank all the members who contributed for this noble cause.

Ecology Forum Study Circle

Visit to Agricultural College, VellayaniAs scheduled, the Study Circle visited the Vellayani Agricultural College

on Saturday, 28th November 2015. The group consisted of 37 members

led by Saji Cheriyan Mammen Achen and George Joseph Achen. They

arrived at the College campus at 10 AM and were there till the evening.

They visited various Departments and farms, and were enlightened on

the activities of the College. Dr. Babu Mathew, with the assistance of

Mr Abraham Mathew, Mr Paulraj, Mr Joseph George and Dr. Thomas

Biju Mathew, coordinated the programme. The group left the Campus

after purchase of materials from the Sales Outlet of the College. By

God’s grace, the climate was pleasant throughout the day, and it was

a memorable event for all the members of the group.

CHRISTMAS – GOD WITH US‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will callhim Immanuel (which means “God with us”)’ (Matthew 1:23)

Before Jesus was born, people hoped for the Messiah—the One whowould shoulder their sin and intercede with God on their behalf (Isa.53:12). They expected the Messiah to arrive through a virgin who wouldbear a son in Bethlehem and would name Him Immanuel, “God withus” (Isaiah 7:14). The night Jesus was born, their hope was fulfilled(Luke 2:1-14).

Imagine this: Jesus—the Lord of the universe and Creator of all things—chose to dwell among us! He left heaven and came to this earth. AsJohn says, “We beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten ofthe Father” (John 1:14). Jesus chose to become intimately involvedwith all who will come to Him. And, even more significant, for those ofus who have received His redeeming love, the Holy Spirit has now setup residence in our hearts to comfort, counsel, convict, lead, andteach us.

Although we’re no longer waiting for Jesus in the form of an infant, Heis still the source of our hope. We watch for His second coming:”Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then allthe peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Mancoming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. (Matt.24:30); we anticipate the heavenly home He is preparing for us: “Andif I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to bewith me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:3). As Christians,we can look forward to the future because the baby in the mangerwas, and still is, “the Lord Jesus Christ, our hope” (1 Tim. 1:1).

DIVINE INTERVENTION“I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people out of Egypt”

(Ex 3:10)

God’s intervention in human history reveals His concern and love

towards His creatures. Israelites, the chosen race of God, were under

threat and suffering hardships during the time of Pharaoh. Their cry

reached up to heaven and God came to save his people from bondage

and slavery. His appearance and His intentions were revealed through

Moses. “I have heard the cry of my people, therefore I have come

down”, God says to Moses. And He wants Moses to be the saving

instrument in order to free his people from slavery. God chose Moses

even though he was weak and with a stammering tongue. God says

“Now go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you are to

speak.” (Ex4:12). His power and authority surmount all other powers.

The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob assured His presence, provision

and power when He called Moses for a special task. God’s intervention

is miraculous and His ways are mysterious. St. Paul says “God’s

foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is

stronger than human strength.”

Freedom is God’s GiftThe groaning of the people brought Him down and moved Him to do

something for them. God’s intervention is the only way out, to liberate

his people. In human history we see that it is God who always takes

the initiative. The outstretched arm of God is sufficient to break all

fetters and emancipate human beings. God appeared directly (the

burning bush experience) to free the Israelites who were reeling under

oppression, whereas we see God in Jesus who incarnates in thefullness of time to free us from sin and shame. This makes us a

free people. Paul says “Before you were no people, and outside the

commonwealth of Israel. But now you are God’s people, His own

inheritance”. How blessed we are!

Moses the LiberatorGod needs our help to fulfill His promises. In this context he chooses

Moses in spite of his incapabilities. When He chooses somebody He

empowers them also with His own Spirit and authority. God’s abundant

promises forced Moses to accept his responsibility and he became

victorious in that task. The liberating act of God must be continued

through our active participation with Him. “We are only God’s co-

workers.” (1 Cor. 3:9) During this Advent, let us think of the liberating

activities of God through Jesus, who very boldly declared His mission

and vision. (Lk 4:17, 18) through the Nazareth manifesto.

Thought: Are we co-labourers with God?

Prayer: “Lord, our hope and refuge, look upon us who are bewilderedand dismayed. Help us to discern your voice and act according to it.Amen.”
