We hope that everyone enjoyed some time off with friends and family over the holiday break. With the holiday season now over, most people have stopped actively giving thanks for giſts or blessings, but we at Mount Tabor High School have not because our students, staff and parents give us reasons to acknowledge our blessings year round. One of our many accomplishments at Mount Tabor HS is that we met expected growth from our 2015-16 testing. In the first half of this school year we received formal approval of our Continuous Improvement Plan by the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County School District. Our school goals center on student growth on EOC’s, the reduction of achievement gaps, adding literacy strategies into our class instruction, NC Final Exams, VOCATS, Spartan Legacy contributions towards classroom technology and professional development, a shared vision, and quality personnel. As we shiſted gears to the month of January, we knew it would fly by with the final weeks of the grading period and our mid-term and final exams. As we turn the page on the excitement of the close of the 1st Semester, we must now begin to lay the ground work for our 2017-18 school year. Plans for 2017-18 and any school year will bring change with regard to a course enrollment and the registration process. Course registration is now upon us as we will work with our students and their parents/ guardians in making high school registration the best it can be. On Monday, Jan. 30th, 2017 we will hold our SPARTAN SHOWCASE at Mount Tabor High School for parents and rising 9-12 students. is information session will begin with a short PTSA meeting at 6:30 p.m. in our Auditorium followed by brief remarks about our registration process. Academic, Arts, and Athletic programs will be showcased at this event. At this event, parents should plan to talk with teachers about courses and course levels that are being considered for next school year. Gathering information from a student’s current teachers and teachers who teach courses that may be selected in the future is a vitally important part of the registration process. We will invite representatives from the Forsyth Tech Dual Enrollment Program and the Career Center to answer questions about their programs as well. On ursday, Feb. 16th, we will provide our Freshmen Info Session for all rising 9th graders beginning at 6:30p.m. Please help us to spread this information as we work to bring the future Class of 2021 on board. I believe this information will be very helpful in understanding the registration process and the importance of making good, well-informed course selections. If you have questions about course selections or any part of the registration process, please contact your student’s counselor. I want to take this opportunity to thank our PTSA under the leadership of Executive Board Presidents, Elaine Peddycord and eresa Pauca for their support. I would like to encourage everyone to continue to support the PTSA’s Spartan Legacy efforts as we continue with our plans to make continual upgrades of technology around our campus. Go SPARTANS!!! Happy New Year from SpARTa! Mount Tabor High School Arts have been busy this past semester with many stellar performances from our band, orchestra, choral groups, dance and theatre classes! In addition, many of our visual arts students’ pieces were displayed at the Dixie Classic Fair as well as other venues around town. The function of the PTSA’s Arts Board is to support arts classes through fundraising, promotion and volunteerism. This fall, the board purchased a “mid-stage traveler” curtain and rigging for the stage, new microphones and a television outside the auditorium. In addition to these purchases, arts board funds provide necessary classroom supplies such as visual art supplies, music, costumes and instrument repair. This year, the board elected to “go green” and replace our previous paper Playbill with our new pre-performance video loop. This alleviated our printing costs so we can provide more support to our various art programs, not to mention save a few trees! Our generous business sponsors are now recognized on the television in the auditorium lobby as well as inside the auditorium before and after all performances. During the week, the television displays photos, upcoming performance dates, and other news about the arts at Tabor. Our annual Butter Braid pastry fundraiser was successful as well. This year students were able to sample the product at the sale kickoff, and we doubled our profits from last year! We even offered incentive prizes to our top sellers, including a GoPro, Wireless Beats, as well as Bluetooth speakers.

With winter concerts behind us, we now get to focus on a possible Visual Arts Camp for elementary students, as well as our Spartan Arts Crawl April 21st. This is sure to be a fun and relaxed way to see all the talents of SpARTa, while being able to purchase items as well as enjoy some yummy food and music!

“For a host of reasons, high-quality arts education is absolutely critical to providing all students with a world-class education. The study of the arts can significantly boost student achievement, reduce discipline problems, and increase

the odds that students will go on to graduate from college. Arts education is also essential to stimulating the creativity and innovation that will prove critical to young Americans competing in a knowledge-based, global economy. And the arts are valuable for their own sake.

They empower students to create and appreciate aesthetic works. Creating by doing is a uniquely powerful way to learn.”— U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, April 2012.

Happy New Year, Mount Tabor families! The start of this New Year also gives us the opportunity to remember our many blessings of the past. Last year we celebrated our school’s 50th Anniversary, with a multitude of celebrations and remembrances of these incredible years together. Mount Tabor High School is certainly one of our blessings, and we are very thankful to the faculty and staff for all they do for our children. Thanks to the generosity of our Tabor parents, our Spartan Legacy campaign has raised more than $47,000. We have already used part of these donations to purchase items from our teacher classroom technology wish list, including two TV monitors with wall mounts, an iPad Mini and a laser jet printer. Remaining funds will supplement the classroom technology updates which will be provided by WSFCS as part of the recently approved school bond package. We are nearly to our goal of $50,000, so if you have not yet had a chance to contribute, please give any amount you can! Every dollar counts toward our kids’ success! All three of our boards—Academics, Arts, & Athletics— work so hard to give Tabor students and teachers the best resources and opportunities available. Please read about their latest reports and plans in this newsletter and consider volunteering your time and

being a part of these amazing boards. Our students, faculty, and staff, past and present, represent excellence in all endeavors. This was on full display during our Hall of Fame induction in September when we recognized seven outstanding Spartans: John Furches, Baxter Holman, William Vaughn Moore, Derek Nicholson, Rick Page, Virginia Pate, and Colonel Max Reed. These former students, staff, and volunteers embody the best of the best in academics, athletics, and arts and have taken their successes from Mount Tabor into the community where they continue to shine. We are fortunate to be part of an amazing school family which is led by a dedicated group of administrators, faculty and staff. Our PTSA is full of amazing parents who so generously give of their time to make Mount Tabor the best school in the county! Go Spartans!

PTSA Executive Board — Theresa Pauca, President, and Elaine Peddycord, Vice President

As we write this, we have just begun a new calendar year. The holidays are behind us, and there is a new semester in sight. While winter

may feel like a time to settle in and stay warm, it is also a time of reflection, re-commitment, and planning for the next academic year which will begin at the end of summer. A successful school year for any family includes good communication, confidence in our students’ abilities to learn and make progress, and a sense of care and belonging within our Mount Tabor community. The PTSA wants to do all we can to ensure that those things happen for our Mount Tabor families. We encourage the involvement of parents in supporting our students, teachers, and staff, and there are many ways to serve as a volunteer. We have a hospitality committee which organizes meals for teachers on special occasions, and they are always in need of extra hands. So is the Spartanwear committee. They sell clothing and collectibles with the Mount Tabor name or insignia, and the money raised from those sales will provide funds for classroom resources not covered by the county’s budget. Our landscaping committee works hard to make sure our campus grounds are beautiful and well cared for throughout the year, and they welcome help which is especially needed during grounds beautification projects. Also, our freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior parent class committees provide planning and resources for class events throughout the year. We are looking for more involvement on each of those committees so our students have strong support for important class events, such as Senior

Day or breakfast before the junior ACT, as well as freshmen and sophomore events. Our students have a four year road to graduation, and parent involvement along the journey is key to ensuring they arrive successfully. We’d love to connect with you and hear how you would like to become part of the PTSA’s efforts to continue building the best academic environment and community in Winston-Salem. Please consider jumping in with both feet this spring semester. It will give you a chance to make new friends and stay plugged in to your student’s school. If you’d like to be placed on an email list which we’ll use to notify you when we have upcoming volunteer needs this semester, please send us a short note with your contact information. And if you’d like to know more about what is involved in being on next year’s Academics Board, please let us know that too. We’d love to hear from you and find the best ways to encourage your involvement in Mount Tabor’s excellent academic culture.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported the Athletics Board this

year by volunteering at or participating in the Homecoming golf tournament, staffing and stocking the concession stands, being a banner sponsor, becoming a member of the Spartan Club, linking your Harris Teeter VIC card to #5022 and volunteering to help in other ways when called upon. We are very fortunate that parents volunteer a tremendous amount of their time to help improve Mt. Tabor’s athletic program. We are also grateful to have a number of new faces on the board this year, and we are always looking for new volunteers. So far this year, the Athletics Board completed several projects:

1. Agreed to purchase lacrosse helmets and goals.2. Agreed to purchase a tent for use at athletic and other

Mt. Tabor events.3. Assisted in the purchase of benches for the tennis courts.4. Assisted in the purchase of athletic wear for all of Mt.

Tabor’s coaches.5. Purchased weight room equipment for the benefit of all

Mt. Tabor’s athletes.6. Oversaw Mt. Tabor’s first annual golf tournament

during Homecoming weekend (special thanks to Kristin Wooten for her leadership).

7. Continuing to fund field maintenance projects to ensure our athletic fields remain in good shape.

There are several ways that parents and students can help the Athletic Board:

THE SPARTAN CLUB: This is our student “Spirit Club” to help cheer on our events. Membership is open to students and adults. Proceeds from the memberships go to the Athletics Board.

BANNER SPONSOR PROGRAM: One of the main sources of revenue for the Athletics Board is the sale of advertisement banners and digital sponsorships that are displayed at athletic events. We are actively looking for additional sponsors. This program is headed by board members Hugh and Dia Roberts. If you or someone you know is interested, please email Hugh and Dia at [email protected]. Please support these sponsors with your business. Spartans supporting Spartans! BRICK SALES: Honor your current or former Mt. Tabor student by buying a brick with his or her name on it that will be put on Spartan Way. Proceeds go to the Athletics Board. HARRIS TEETER VIC CARD: Please link your VIC card to #5022. Harris Teeter will donate funds back to the Athletics Board if your card is linked. VOLUNTEER: We are always looking for parents to become part of the Athletics Board and help out in different ways. We also need volunteers to help in the concession stand during athletic events. This is a great way to get to know other Spartan parents. Fill out the volunteer form on the Mt. Tabor PTSA website http://sites.google.com/site/taborptsa/. Return the volunteer form to the front office or a member of the Athletic Board. COME SUPPORT OUR SPARTAN ATHLETIC TEAMS: Come out and cheer on our Spartan student athletes by attending our athletic events. We had an outstanding fall and look forward to keeping this tradition going as 2017 rolls around. Go Spartans!

Spartan Parents: Welcome to the second semester of the 2016-17 school year from the school counseling staff. Second semester brings opportunities to continue building success in yearlong classes and to start new semester block classes as students from all grade levels pursue high school graduation and build plans for college and other opportunities. Continued engagement or exploration of extracurricular activities that build service, leadership and character skills are strongly encouraged. We want students to grow academically and to feel a strong sense of well-being through class participation and enjoying one or more of the many athletic, arts or club activities available at Tabor City. We want all our seniors focused on graduating on June 9, 2017 and building their individual plans for starting college, joining the military, entering the work force or continuing education in other ways. Many seniors have received admission decisions from colleges and universities and many more decisions will come soon, but there is still time to apply. Many families have already filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, but again there is still time to meet deadlines. Look closely at FAFSA filing deadlines for the colleges and universities that are important to you. Also file the CSS/Profile if your schools use them to make financial aid decisions. There will also be many scholarship opportunities through the winter and spring, so follow through and complete applications. As juniors, sophomores and freshmen continue to strive for “EXCELLENCE IN EVERY ENDEAVOR,” it is time to focus on making decisions for next school year. Following the January Spartan Showcase at Mount Tabor and the Career Center Open House, the school counseling staff will present registration and course offering information to students and parents. By early February, we will communicate a registration timeline and set of registration procedures. Each grade level will listen to a registration and course selection overview, and students will again have the opportunity to select their courses online through their PowerSchool accounts. We will also meet individually with each student to plan and discuss course selections. We encourage students and parents to research information about course opportunities that fit both graduation plans and goals for after high school experiences using our school district registration materials and communicating with current and future teachers. We want students to select and commit to academic choices that prepare, stretch and fit their individual needs. We will share much more registration information through our various means of communication-email, text, phone and letter. We invite and encourage parents to attend any and all Tabor Forum Series events. When we prepare and implement a program with our class groups, we hold a companion event

for parents. Although forum events fit a particular grade level more precisely, parents are welcome to stay updated and plan by attending any event. During first semester, we held forums for each grade level. The following forum events are scheduled for second semester. Please offer this information to your neighbors and friends with eighth grade students.

MOUNT TABOR HIGH SCHOOLSPARTAN LEGACY CAMPAIGN 2016-17

The SPARTAN LEGACY CAMPAIGN is the annual appeal from Mt. Tabor High School’s PTSA for contributions to support our school’s mission of providing “Excellence in Every Endeavor.” Contributions primarily fund special projects chosen to benefit Academics, Arts and Athletics at MTHS, and also support traditional PTSA functions. For the past six school years, the campaign has paid for classroom instructional technology. The ultimate goal is to equip every classroom with wireless technology and laptop carts. Generous Spartan families have contributed over $250,000 since the inception of this campaign six years ago. With your support, we will reach our goal of raising another $50,000 for the 2016-2017 school year. Any contribution your family makes is greatly needed and appreciated.
