A big thank you goes out to all our Lions and

Lion Ladies who helped with our community projects this month.

The first was the hosting of our annual National Association of Blind Bowlers Tournament which was held at the Riverside Sports Club in Uvongo during the weekend of 23 and 24 August. We thank also National Braiding Industries (Main Sponsor) as well as all other sponsors in making this a special day. Our Lion Ladies provided the meal and Lion members helped with the serving of d i n n e r o n t h e S a t u r d a y e v e n i n g . Entertainment was provided and a good evening enjoyed by all. The Uvongo club took the honours again at prize giving on Sunday Afternoon. Since Uvongo club has won this numerous times in a row, the blind bowlers would like to take up next year's challenge at midnight during new moon. Our thoughts go out to Lion Hans Wagenaar who is at home battling with lung cancer. Hans has been the convenor of this project for more than 25 years and was unable to attend this year. Thanks go to his daughter Madeleine who took up the challenge and helped Dad make this project once again a great success.

Another service project, our monthly Seniors Lions Bingo headed up by Lion Colin was held at our Lion's Den on Saturday 30th Aug. Thanks again to all Lions and Lion Ladies who helped with transportation and serving up tea and snacks on the day.

Again I need to thank our Lion Ladies who prepared 100 meals for people who live at the Flower Foundation in Port Shepstone.

Lion Andre' organised and made our presence at the Hospice Golf day held

at Sheppie Country club. Our involvement was in support of Hospice. Lion Kevin brewed up a cocktail of note for players passing by. The day was enjoyed by all.

The 1st Quarterly District 410-C Cabinet Meeting was hosted by Sheppie Lions on the weekend of the 2nd of August. The meeting was attended by most of the Cabinet Officers. Our appreciation for the hospitality provided by Lions and Lion Lad ies o f our c lub who p rov ided accommodation, meals and snacks throughout the weekend. The event ended off with a fellowship braai and sing-a-long provided by Lion Denis and his accordion. Not many people are aware of Denis' hidden talents.

To end my message, Lion Lady Irene Love's Father has recently passed away. We send condolences to both Irene and Lion Alister. Irene's Mom is also not well and our thoughts go out to both of them. We miss you both and look forward to your return.

On Sunday 3rd August, a terrible tragedy occurred. A large earthquake struck the Yunnan Province of China. Authorities estimate that nearly 600 people have lost their lives from the Zhaotong earthquake, with an additional 2,800 people injured across several counties. Even more people are missing. It is estimated that more than 25,500 homes were completely destroyed, with an even higher number of houses damaged.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) immediately awarded a US$250,000 Major Catastrophe Grant with money from the disaster relief fund, allowing Lions in affected areas to immediately begin providing assistance. These funds will help meet immediate needs by providing food, water, medicine, blankets and other necessities as quickly as possible. The funds will also support long-term reconstruction and recovery.

With approximately 21,000 Lions members in China, many of our fellow Lions have been directly impacted by this disaster. We must help them as they provide relief and assistance to their affected communities. I encourage you to consider making a donation to the Foundation for disaster relief. Donations to the disaster relief fund are Melvin Jones Fellowship eligible and can make a real difference in times of need.

ort Shepstone Lions once again hosted the National Association of Blind Bowlers Tournament which

Pwas held at the Riverside Sports Club in Uvongo during the weekend of 23 and 24 August. A number of blind bowlers travelled down to the South Coast to participate in this annual tournament.

Port Shepstone Lions became involved with the NABB - National Association of Blind Bowlers (KZN Region) in 1981 during the "Year of the Disabled". The annual weekend tournament means a great deal to the blind bowlers and for the past 33 years the Port Shepstone Lions have organised the competition and secured sponsorship for travel, meals and accommodation.

Apart from the games, the weekend includes accommodation and meals. The Port Shepstone Lion Ladies provided and served dinner on the Saturday evening.

The Club most grateful to event organiser Madeleine Wagenaar who stood in for her father, Lion Hans Wagenaar who was unfortunately too ill to attend. The Club is also indebted to their main sponsor, National Braiding Industries as well as all other sponsors who made generous donations towards this very successful annaul project..

Csponsored a temporary vehicle for District Governor Martin to use during his term of office. This vehicle will

eventually be replaced with a Ford Eco Sport. They are also in the process of formalising an agreement and will provide the MO for all Districts to benefit from the spotting fee of R1000.00 per unit ordered and sold through County Ford. They have no objections to the funds being placed into Club's Administration accounts, particularly if Districts share the fee with the clubs that do the spotting. They will be providing cards for distribution. This applies to all Ford vehicles in their range. ort Shepstone Lions Club, home club of current District Governor Martin Rundle, hosted the 1st District Cabinet

PMeeting at their Clubhouse in Umtentweni on Saturday 9th August. The meeting was attended by Lion members from KZN and the Freestate provinces. Quarterly Cabinet meetings are held at different venues around the

District. The purpose of a district cabinet is to assist, coordinate and promote the general welfare of Lions clubs and their members, and to assist the District Governor in performing the duties of that office. At these meetings, the District Governor and the Cabinet Officers have the opportunity to report on the general progress and performance of Lionism throughout the District. Financial administration, membership, leadership, service projects (including international programs) are also discussed and decisions are made regarding the implementation of various District projects and programs.

All Cabinet Officers in attendance were most impressed with the hospitality provided by the Lions and Lion Ladies of the Port Shepstone Club as well as the facilities at the clubhouse. The Lion Ladies were responsible for all meals provided as well as snacks during tea time and went out of their way to ensure that all in attendance were well nourished. The event ended off with a fellowship braai and sing-a-long which was enjoyed by all in attendance.

Written by Regina Brett, 90 years old, of the Plain Dealer, Cleveland , Ohio ."To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:

1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.3. Life is too short – enjoy it.4. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and family will.5. Pay off your credit cards every month.6. You don't have to win every argument. Stay true to yourself.7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone.8. It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.13. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye, but don't worry, God never blinks.16.. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.17. Get rid of anything that isn't useful. Clutter weighs you down in many ways.18. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger.19.. It's never too late to be happy. But it's all up to you and no one else.20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer.21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special.22. Over prepare, then go with the flow.23. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple.24. The most important sex organ is the brain.25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you.26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words 'In five years, will this matter?'27. Always choose life.28. Forgive29. What other people think of you is none of your business.30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.32. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.33. Believe in miracles.34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do.35. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.36. Growing old beats the alternative of dying young.37. Your children get only one childhood.38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else's, we'd grab ours back.41. Envy is a waste of time. Accept what you already have, not what you need42. The best is yet to come...43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.44. Yield.45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift."
