ort Shepstone Lions ran a successful diabetes testing clinic at Harbour View Superspar on Saturday 28th February. A total of 110

Ppeople were tested during the course of the morning, 28 of which were out of their sugar level range. A vert well done to Lion Mike Marshall for his fine efforts in launching this project. Our sincere appreciation to the Management of Harbour View Superspar for

providing the venue, Ramsgate Lion Rob Henry for his assistance and advice, Sister Debbie Marshall and Bev Chislett. The Club plans to hold regular diabetes testing clinics to help raise awareness for diabetes which is a silent killer around the world.

WHAT IS DIABETES?

When you have diabetes you body either cannot make its own insulin or cannot use insulin properly. Your blood glucose levels will be high, and you will need treatment. Diabetes can be managed with medication, a healthy eating plan and exercise. The good news is that having diabetes need not mean the end of a normal healthy life if you first accept that you have the condition and then learn how to manage it.

TYPES OF DIABETES

There are three main types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes - occurs when the pancreas stops producing insulin. It usually starts in young people under the age of 30, including very young children and infants, and the onset is sudden and dramatic. People who have type 1 diabetes must inject insulin to survive. Insulin dosages are carefully balanced with food intake and exercise programmes.

-----------------

Type 2 diabetes - is caused when the insulin, which the pancreas produces, is either not enough or does not work properly. Approximately 85 - 90% of all people with diabetes are type 2, and many people who have this condition are undiagnosed.

Most type 2's are over 40. They are usually overweight and do not exercise. Type 2 diabetes may be treated successfully without medication. Often loss of weight alone will reduce glucose levels. Eating patterns and exercise play important roles in management. Tablets may be prescribed to help improve control, however, many type 2's will eventually use insulin.

Although type 2 is, in itself, not life threatening, in many ways it is more dangerous than type 1, as it's onset is gradual and hard to detect. High blood glucose levels over a long period of time can cause serious damage to the delicate parts of the body and lead to blindness, heart attack\stroke, kidney failure, impotence and amputation.

Arecently visited the Cornerstone School for Autistic Children which is situated at the

Norwegian Settlers Church in Marburg. During their visit they handed over books as a donation to the school’s library, took a tour of the school and interacted with some of the pupils. They also met with school head Sheryl Mulder and discussed ways in which they can provide more assistance to this unique and much needed facility in our area.Cornerstone school receives no government funding and rely on charitable support. Our Lion Ladies plan to continue assisting this school wherever possible.

Hearty congratulations to Lion Kevin Ross who is the newest recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award - the highest award in Lionism. Lion Kevin was presented

with this award at the Club’s 45th Charter Dinner Evening.

Kevin was born in Pretoria in 1961 and matriculated at St Alban’s College in 1978. During 1979-1980 he completed his National Service in the SA Air Force and thereafter enrolled at the Cedara College of Agriculture where he completed his National Diploma in Agriculture. Kevin then worked for Anglo Farms in Virginia Freestate on the Steenwyk Piggery with 17000 pigs! Today Kevin is a building contractor based in the Port Shepstone area.

Kevin has three children, daughter Camilla who is married to Arthur -they have a son (Kevin’s grandson), James, son Jarrod who lives in Maputo Mozambique and is involved with a blonde doris (as Kev so eloquently puts it) called Carly and then his youngest Warwick (Wok) who is 17 years of age and Kevin’s best friend!

Service Club History

Kevin was introduced to Round Table in Virginia OFS and joined Virginia 73 in 1985. He then moved to Port Shepstone and joined Sheppie 83 in 1989. During his years with Table, he attended ARTSA (National conference) 4 times and travelled to 3 functions at Darwendale Round Table in Zimbabwe with whom Sheppie 83 had a twinning arrangement. The highlight of his Table career was attending the World 83 conference in Risor, Norway in 2000 when he was club chairman. Kevin was “retrenched” from Table in 2001 as a 41er due to old age.

Kevin was inducted into the Port Shepstone Lions Club on 1st June 2006 and sponsored by Lion John Saunders. For the past 9 years, Kevin has proven to be one of the most dedicated members of the Port Shepstone Lions Club. His ongoing involvement with service to our community, fundraising for our charity fund and fellowship are testimony of his commitment. Kevin has already served on the Board of Directors as Lion Tamer, Service Projects Convener (3 times), Membership Director and Fund Raising Director. Kevin served as President of the Port Shepstone Lions Club during the 2011/2012 Lionistic year. At District level, Kevin has served as Zone 6 Chairman during the 2013/2014 Lionistic year and currently serves as the District Chairman for Sight and Hearing projects. Kevin received the

Club’s Lion of the Year Award in both 2007 and 2009.

Kevin has already attended Multiple District conventions in Port Shepstone, Houdini Worcester, Kimberly, East London, Howick /Windhoek.

Kevin’s fun loving nature has had a positive impact on the spirit of our club. Kevin’s motto has always been "If it's not fun, then don't do it" - and he sure knows how to have fun whilst serving!

Lion Kevin we thank you for being a great Lion and awesome friend and we wish you many more happy years of service with our great club.

Lion Kevin was officially inducted into Lions during 2006 by District Governor Heather Hardman. His sponsor

Lion John Saunders stood by him during the ceremony. Since then, Kevin is rarely seen wearing a tie!

he 3rd Cabinet meeting of the 2014/2015 Lionistic year was hosted by the Lions Club of Reitz and held at Tthe Bass Feather Lodge outside Reitz in the Freestate Province during the weekend of 7-8 February. A

group of Sheppie Lions travelled together to enjoy a weekend of fun and fellowship with a truly fantastic

group of Lions and their families. As usual, the Reitz Lions pulled out all the stops and went out of their way to

ensure that all visiting Lions were well nourished and very well entertained. The weekend program started off

with a very enjoyable braai (sheep heads and all!) on the Friday night. On the Saturday partners in service were

taken on a tour of a local chicken farm and wolf sanctuary whilst our Cabinet Officers deliberated during their

meeting. After lunch the guests participated in various “boere sports” and were then taken on a 4X4 drive to the

top of a kopje to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the valley and lodge. That evening our hosts prepared a very

delicious potjiekos supper which was followed by some very enjoyable Afrikaans jokes courtesy of Reitz Lion

Jurgens Van Der Schyf. The Sheppie Clan decided to bring along some of their legendary “daisy” shooters

which was shared with all guests and helped add to the festivities! After a very delicious breakfast on the

Sunday morning we all bid our farewells and set off on the long road back to Kwazulu-Natal.

It was truly a wonderful weekend and our grateful appreciation to the Management of the Bass Feather Lodge,

the Reitz Lions and their families for making us all feel so welcome in this very beautiful and prestine part of our

country.

hen the Port Shepstone Lions Club was chartered in 1970, a Lion Ladies Club was also established.

WOver the years our Ladies Club has literally become the backbone of the Port Shepstone Lions club. They are tirelessly involved with almost every project that our club undertakes. From catering for our numerous fundriasers and charitable events to providing support to the elderly, the homeless, the sick and destitute, the disabled, the youth and abused or neglected children, our Ladies Club has never failed to deliver. They also embark on many of their own projects, without our assistance and we sometimes forget to give them recognition for their fine efforts.

Our Lions Creed includes the following verses :

Who fills a niche and accomplishes his or her task – (our ladies most definitely assist with many of the tasks that club members would not be able to accomplish in their absence)

Who leaves the world better than he or she found it – (the many projects that our Ladies club have undertaken over the past 45 years are testimony of this)

Whether by a brighter flower (our beautifully decorated venues at every single one of our events are testimony of this),

A perfect poem, or a rescued soul (the commitment and dedication shown by our Ladies over the years has positively impacted the lives of literally thousands of needy people)

So, my fellow Lions, we must honour and recognise our wonderful Ladies. They love us, they provide a home for us, raise our children, nourish our bodies and, aside from all of this, they also find the time to help us serve our community with dignity and respect.

In the words of Aubrey Hepburn : “The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives and the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows significantly with the passing years.”

We love you one and all and thank you for caring, for sharing, for your commitment to service and above all for being the very wind beneath our wings.
