Shepp ie L ions you once again make me proud

to be your President. Congratulations to our Members, Lion Ladies and especially PDG Denis Meyer, our convenor, on a well planned and executed midyear conference held at the Pont on the weekend of Nov 1st. Although I was unable to attend, from the responses of delegates and proof of photos, the weekend was an unforgettable experience. Thanks again to all those who were involved in making this a successful event including the Pont and staff who were there at our beck and call.

During the conference PDG Denis Meyer was presented with the International Extension Award for assisting with the establishment of the Goldfields Lions Club in Welkom. He also received a Silver Star Dream Achievers Award pin from the International President.IPP/ Zone Chairman Andre' Beneka also received a Dream Achievers Award pin for membership growth in the Sheppie Club during his term as President this past Lionistic year. Congratulations to both Denis and Andre on their achievements.

One o f our annua l community highlights was in aid of sight preservation. We were once again able to sponsor with the help of Dr Trevor Stein and Hibiscus Hospital 12 Patients who required Cataract operations. Again thank you to all who gave up their time to assist in this very worthy cause

Although we lost Lion Hans Wagenaar who was “Called to Higher Service”, I welcomed new member Lion Gary Rolfe who was inducted at our business meeting in October. We hope he grows to be a successful Lion, dedicated to the service of others who are less fortunate than us.

Thanks go out to our Lion Ladies who dedicated their time to providing food for the Flower Foundation again this month and to our Bingo Convenor Lion Colin together with a team of Lions and Lady Lions who assisted with Bingo on the 25th October.

November is going forward is a very busy month for us.

I once again thank all those who dedicated their time during October and to those who are able to afford their time in the up and coming events during November

ctober was National Eye care Awareness Month and, on 20th October, the Port Shepstone Lions Club once again teamed up with

OHibiscus Private Hospital, local Ophthalmologist Dr Trevor Steyn and Dr Louw (Anaesthesiologist) to assist 12 local residents with much needed cataract operations.

Port Shepstone Lions were the main sponsors by providing the sum of R25000-00 towards the costs. Dr Trevor Steyn and Dr Louw graciously donated their time and skills. The lenses and surgical packets were kindly donated by Alcon, South Africa and Genop Healthcare and the theatre facility, wards and nursing staff were provided by Hibiscus Private Hospital in Port Shepstone. Specsavers, Shelly Beach also assisted all patients with their spectacles.

On 10 October 2014, 12 local resident’s got to see our beautiful coast clearly again. October is the National Eye Care Awareness Month and Hibiscus Private Hospital again supported a local Ophthalmologist, Dr T Steyn and other sponsors during the cataract operations.

Huge thanks go out to our generous sponsors; Lions Club Port Shepstone, Drs T Steyn(Ophthalmologist) and Drs Basson & Louw (Anaesthesiologists) who graciously donatedtheir time and skills. The lenses and surgical packets were kindly donated by Alcon South Africa and Genop Healthcare with the theatre facility, wards and nursing staff provided by Hibiscus Private Hospital. Specsavers Shelly Beach will also assist the patients with their spectacles in a few weeks' time.

It was once again an honour to give back to the community. None of the patients were in the position to afford the operation and would have battled with deteriorating eye sight impacting their daily lives. These patients were recommended to the one-day programme from the public sector waiting list.

he 2014 Lions District 410-C Midyear Conference was hosted by the Port Shepstone Lions Club during the weekend of 31st

TOctober to 2nd November at The Pont Holiday Resort in Port Edward. 145 delegates and partners in service from 24 Lions Clubs located in Kwazulu-Natal and the Freestate attended the Conference weekend. The weekend theme was "Carry On Camping" and

several of the delegates pitched their tents and camped at The Pont for the duration of the weekend. Many others stayed in the Pont's accommodation chalets or at other accommodation venues in and around Port Edward. Lions and their families started to arrive on the Friday afternoon to register and book into their accommodation.

The weekend program started off on the Friday evening with a very sociable welcome braai which was followed by music and dancing at the Pont's Pub.

Saturday morning's program began with the District's 2nd Cabinet Meeting which was held in a marquee erected next to the pub and restaurant. Whilst the Cabinet meeting was in session, partners in service were treated to a ride on the Pont's "Argy Bargy" along the Umtamvuna River to the Wild Coast Sun where they played ten pin bowling for the duration of the morning. Delegate's children were also treated to various games, a jumping castle and water slide at The Pont. Several clubs also submitted entries for the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest and Environmental Photo Contest which were adjudicated by a panel of local judges. After tea time, the district conference commenced and continued for most of the day with a lunch break at 12:30. The Conference was officially opened by Southern Africa Area Leader for the Lions Global Leadership, Cliff Hocking who travelled from Midrand in Gauteng to attend. Other "outsiders" who visited the Conference included Southern Africa Area Leader for the Lions Global Membership Team, Mike Newlands (Port Alfred) and a group of Lions members from Wilro Park in Gauteng who visited the conference to promote next year's "Jozi Towers" National Convention.

District Governor Martin Rundle chaired the Conference and various Cabinet Officers presented their portfolios, showed presentations and videos and fielded questions from the floor. District Awards for the previous fiscal year were also presented to some of the Clubs. Port Shepstone Lions Club were proud to receive three awards, namely, The Club Bulletin Award for the best monthly newsletter, the Ian Murray Project Public Relations Award for media coverage of the Lions' Expo and a Louis Halse Award for being a 100% contributing club to this district trust which assists clubs financially with service projects. Port Shepstone's Lion Andre Beneke was also presented with a "Silver Star Dream Achiever's Award" in recognition of the Club's membership growth during his term as Club President and Past District Governor Denis Meyer was presented with the "Silver Star Dream Achiever's Award" and an International President's Extension Award Certificate in recognition of his assistance with the establishment of the new "Goldfields" Lions Club in Welkom. District Governor Martin Rundle also presented certificates of appreciation to Lions Denis Meyer who convened the weekend conference and Jeff Smith who attended to the registrations process. During his address, Conference Convener, Lion Denis Meyer thanked all delegates for their attendance, The Pont Holiday Resort for hosting the event and all sponsors who made the event possible. He then presented certificates of appreciation to Lion Jean Masson, The Pont Holiday Resort and to Chrissie Wilson who did an outstanding job with the catering for the weekend.

The day ended off with a "Carry On Henry VIII" themed banquet in the marquee. The Lions and Lion Ladies of Port Shepstone transformed the marquee into a magnificent medieval castle together with "stocks and a "chopping block". Delegates attended dressed as royalty, peasants, wenches and even a few executioners! Some of the guests were "sentenced" and sent to the executioner for various indiscretions which brought much hilarity to the evening's entertainment. The evening was a spectacular success and live entertainer, Anton Roos "Roosterbrood" kept the dance floor hopping until the early hours of the morning.

After breakfast on Sunday morning, delegates attended a membership/leadership workshop which was presented by both Southern Africa Area Leader for the Lions Global Leadership, Cliff Hocking and Southern Africa Area Leader for the Lions Global Membership Team, Mike Newlands before bidding farewells and heading off home.

Hats off to the Port Shepstone Lions and Lion Ladies who attended en masse and worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event which was arguably one of the best held in recent years.

eld at the UN Headquarters in New York City, the 37th annual Lions Day with the

HUnited Nations is celebrating 70 years of partnership. Since our collaboration in 1945, Lions and the UN have worked together on many humanitarian projects

such as the SightFirst program. This year’s theme is “Children In Need.” Lions are encouraged to join the UN in achieving the Millennium Development Goals by addressing important humanitarian needs such as eradicating poverty and hunger, providing access to education, combating diseases and ensuring environmental sustainability. LDUN gives the opportunity for Lions to learn how, together with the UN, we can continue to help those in need on a global level. This year’s Lions Day with the UN takes place on Saturday, March 7, 2015.

“I Fear No Beer!!”Jeff “Pebbles” Smith.

Ever wondered why his nick name is “Pebbles”?

When he was a youngster, he belonged to a band called

“The Pebbles”. Their motto was - When they grow up, they want to be “Rolling

Stones”!!

Sheppie Lions' Melvin the Lion has a new baby brother...the club recently "inducted" a new "member" into the Team! The Lion "King" will, in future have pride of place right next to the club President and ensure that President Al keeps his eyes open at all times during meetings. Our new mascot, kindly donated by Lion (Dr) Hilton Horsley, will also accompany club members on all their future travels to Conventions and conferences.
