Rabbi's MessageRabbi Michael [email protected]

Dear Friends,

I look forward to greeting you on the holidays. Here is a taste of my sermon Kol Nidre night on Judaism and technology:

Anyone who has ever been in my office knows that it is filled with bookshelves. Much of the space on those bookshelves is taken up by multiple volumes of the great books of Jewish literature – the Bible, Biblical commentaries, the Talmud, the Midrash, the codes of Jewish law, the Zohar. I am proud of this library which I collected over many years. Today, every one of these books is on an app on my I-phone. I have access to them anywhere. And if I am looking up something in these books and cannot find the answer, I can do an internet search. A world of information is available to be at my fingertips, everywhere I go. On my phone I can also look up any Hebrew date if given the English date, or any English date if given the Hebrew date. I can find the candle lighting time for Shabbat anywhere in the world.

I also have a siddur, a prayerbook, downloaded on my phone. I can pray anywhere. However, the siddur app I use comes with a limitation. If I try to open it on Shabbat to say my prayers, it blocks me. It will not let me pray out of my I-phone on Shabbat. It reminds me of what the Torah says, not to use my technology on Shabbat. There are other multiple uses of my smart phone as a Jew. I can go on YouTube and listen to lectures by rabbis and prayers by cantors, all over the world. I even have a few lectures of my own on YouTube, and I hope to add some more. I can be a Jew using my cell phone in ways that my grandparents could not even imagine.

There is another great advantage to the new technology, as a teaching tool. I am convinced that the future of Conservative Judaism depends upon us embracing conversion. All over the world are communities longing to be Jewish. Often the only way to reach them is through Skype and similar apps. Already an entire community known as Abayudaya in Uganda has converted to Judaism under the auspices of the Conservative Movement. They even have their own rabbi who studies at the Ziegler School in Los Angeles. Similar communities have sprung up in Africa and Latin America. Many of you know that I have worked with a community of converts in Colombia. Recently, I have done two conversions in Barbados, with more people interested. If not for the new technology, these conversions would not have happened.

In so many ways the new technology is good. But in other ways it is not only bad, but extremely destructive. Why is it destructive? Next time you go out to a public place, a coffee house or restaurant, look to see if there is a table of young people in their teens or early twenties. Odds are they will not be talking to each other or even looking at each other. Odds are they will be looking into their smart phones. The technology has become a way for people to not see each other.

Shana Tova,Rabbi Michael Gold

B’rosh HaShanah yikateivun, uv’Yom tsom Kippur yechateimun, “On Rosh Hashanah it is writ-ten, And on Yom Kippur it is sealed.” Within the Rosh Hashanah liturgy we are faced with this idea of who will live and who will die. The prayer discusses who will die by fire or water and who shall be at ease and in the fullness of years? We look around and may not see people who were with us at this time last year. As we approach the High Holy Day season, we may be faced with a search for God. We sit in synagogue services for long periods of time daven-ing prayer after prayer and sometimes due to our life journey we struggle. We struggle to actually mean the words we read.

Life can be viewed as a journey with both miracles and pain. Life has moments of light and darkness. Life as it is given has no boundaries. Our choices and what happens to us outside of what we choose, determine the shape of our life, our boundaries. As we approach the New Year and Day of Judgment I challenge you to take this time to reflect on your life. Create an outline of your journey, the miracles and pain, the light and darkness. How did you feel during those times of light and darkness? Think about any risks you took this year. For what reasons did you take the risk? Who, if anyone, was influential in your taking the risk? What was the experi-ence like? How did it feel? In what ways did it affect your relationship with those involved (e.g. family, friends)? What were the results, outcomes, or consequences, both positive and negative?

We change, and our image of God changes throughout our lives. As we reflect on this past year’s journey may we learn to accept each moment. Each event in our lives contributes to our personal growth. The metaphor of God’s light shining on us, bringing light to our lives repeats in different ways throughout our liturgy. May we find the strength to focus on God’s light, and while remembering the negative, let us never forget the positive.

Happy New Year

School is back in session and our departments are bustling with activity. Please help me in welcoming our new Early Childhood Center Director, Mindy Goldenberg. Mindy ran two suc-cessful pre-school facilities in Georgia and brings experience and enthusiasm to the position. In her short time here, Mindy has already made an impact and we are excited to see our school grow and continue to be recognized as a top pre-school in the area.

We have reinvented our Tot Shabbat and reintroduced a Mommy and Me class. Please stop by with your little ones for the next Tot Shabbat. The energy in the room is infectious,

and our new Song Leader Laura Lenes has done an amazing job providing our children with a wonderful Friday evening experience.

Our Religious School has won a Solomon Shechter award from United Synagogue for our unique twinning program with Nesher, Israel. Kudos to our Religious School Director, Ronit Goldstein, for cultivating this program over the past few years. My continued recognition of Ronit in my Scroll articles is a testament to the outstanding work she has been doing to educate our children while running a Religious School which is getting more and more recognized. Ronit will receive the award at the USCJ conference in Atlanta this December.

Our Youth Director, Diana Silver has some wonderful programming planned for all our youth groups – Matchilim, Pre-Kadima, Kadima, and USY. If your child has considered joining but hasn’t taken the leap, stop by for a fun event and bring a friend! Our TBTST Sharks don’t bite.

Please join us November 18th for our biggest fund-raiser of the year, Dinner & Dance Vow Renewal. Without you, this event will not be a success. Please consider sponsoring, attending, or helping any way you can. I look forward to seeing you at temple for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and the entire High Holiday season including Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Under the spiritual leadership of Rabbi Gold and Cantor Kramarow in the sanctuary, and Usher Bryn and Irv Nachman in the auxiliary service, we are sure to have meaningful and fulfilling experience. On behalf of Julie, Joey and Gabe, I wish you a happy and healthy New Year, and may our entire TBTST family have a year of joy and health.

Many of us think of the summer as a time for vacations and relaxing, trips to Disney World, the Caribbean, Europe or just the beach. A time we slow down, reflect on the past year, and regroup for the fall. Here at the Temple, however, we are thinking of the High Holidays. Summer is not for relaxing. High Holiday seating and sales is of the utmost importance at this time, making sure that everyone who wishes to attend has a High Holiday seat and has addressed their membership commitment for the year. The Book of Remembrance is another High Holiday task that requires hours of preparation and must be completed in time for Yom Kippur as well as the Fountain of Youth brochure. Then there

is the preparation of the building and grounds; repairing, painting, cleaning, waxing, lighting, air conditioning, cutting and trimming. Finally there is the setting up of the social hall and moving the chairs and prayer books out of storage. As the Holidays approach, it is also important that you make your preparations as well – remembering the meaning of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and the obligations that come with it. It is a time for all of us to take stock of our actions in the past year and make amends, a chance to correct the mistakes of the past and commit to a better future. In making that commitment, there are three traditional components to observing Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur: prayer, repentance, and charity. Through prayer and repentance, we show God that we remember our obligations to Him and that we regret the mistakes of the past. Through charity, we show God that we remember our obligations to each other. We begin our Holiday observance with our Selichot service on Saturday night September 16th at 11:00 pm. Please join us prior to services for a move and discussion starting at 9:00 pm, refreshments will be served. I wish you all the very best Rosh Hashanah. A Happy and Healthy New Year and may you be inscribed in the Book of Life. For your Holiday enjoyment I have included my holiday brisket recipe along with some others. Shanah Tovah

As the new Director of Temple Beth Torah’s Early Childhood Center I dove in to synagogue life with enthusiasm so I could discover firsthand what makes Temple Beth Torah Sha’ray Tzedek such a special place. From meeting our devoted board members, to attending Shabbos and minyan services, to chatting with members of our sisterhood I‘ve just started to scratch the surface of the very warm and welcoming atmosphere that drew me to make the career move to TBTST. As I introduced myself to families as they dropped off their little ones at our Early Childhood Center I was struck by how many grandparents took an active role in the daily drop

off and pick up of their grandchildren here at our preschool. Where I came from in Atlanta the only time we saw grandparents is when a mom had just given birth or g-d forbid if a family was in crises. How truly blessed we are at TBTST to have multi-generations enjoying quality time together on a regular basis.

I was fortunate enough to participate in one of the most exciting programs we have and that is our Tot Shabbat Program. The notion of L’Dor V’Dor, from generation to generation, can be seen in full bloom at TBTST. It’s not just a tag line it’s a living and breathing concept. This could be witnessed at the first Tot Shabbat I attended where over a dozen grandparents could be seen dancing, singing and ushering in the joy of Shabbat with not only their children but their children’s children. Most of the grandparents have been congregation members for over 4 decades. Sometimes the payoff for parents of all the years they spend on synagogue committees, raising funds, schlepping their children to Hebrew School or USY events doesn’t come to fruition until they see their children now dancing and singing with children of their own. The ECC values the special relationship grandparents want to have with their grandchildren.

As I looked around the room and absorbed the beautiful music, the glow of the shabbos candles and the smell of warm delicious challah, what really caught my attention was when parents were encouraged to give a blessing to their children. Naturally the parents bent down to give their little preschoolers that they should be blessed like Menasha and Ephraim, Sarah, Rivka, Rachel and Leah. But what really caught my eye was the grandparents standing with their arms raised over the heads of their now grown children giving them a blessing. It signified the true meaning of L’Dor V’Dor.

The Early Childhood Center is ushering in the New Year of 5778 with new programming to help facilitate the special bonds that only a grandparent can share with their grandchildren. I invite you all to join in the mitzvah of keeping tradition alive and well here at TBTST by joining our ECC’s programming including Oneg Shabbat every Friday morning, Tot Shabbat held monthly, Weekly Mommy and Me Sessions, as well as our newest monthly program, just for grandparents and their young grandchildren, L’Dor V’Dor.

Beit SeferRonit Goldstein, Religious School [email protected]

Summer is a reflection time. It is time where we reflect on the previous year, which aspects of our curriculum were successful and which aspects should be modified. It is a time to search for new innovations and look for programs that will increase the quality of our curriculum and meet the educational needs of our students and their families. The Shalom Learning, a web-based Judaica curriculum that teaches Jewish values and Mitzvot through the lens of bible stories, was very successful and will be carried to this year. The Second grade curriculum was added. The curriculum provides a new Hebrew platform that will be used in the classroom as reinforcement.

Cantor Jenna Kramarow will continue to be the driving force behind our ritual curriculum. This year, Cantor will be working with all age groups to teach Friday night ritual for K-5th grade and Saturday morning Torah Service to 6th and 7th grade students. Trop will be imbedded to the 3rd grade Tefilot sessions. Our Schechter awarded Nesher twinning program continues to grow, and this year our Second, Third, Sixth and Seventh grade students will be involved in age appropriate activities with their peers. Holocaust studies will be imbedded into our Judaica curriculum and be part of holiday, life Cycle and prayer studies. This year’s theme is; “before, during and after”. Students in 3rd-7th grades will learn about the way the Jewish community practiced Judaism before, during the war and after liberation. This year our school has grown to offer a new program for our 8th-12th grade students. The youth education pro-gram is a bi-monthly program. Students will meet twice a month on a Tuesday to examine world current events through the lens of Jewish values and their Jewish identity. The program is open to the community and all are welcome to attend. “Kesher Babayit” is another community wide program targeted to Pre-K -2nd grade children and their families. The program will take place during Hebrew School sessions. The program will include story telling (in Hebrew and English) followed by a family activity related to the story. Our first program will be on Sun-day, October 3rd. @ 10:00 a.m. The “Madrichim Program” is a voluntary program where graduated students are given the opportunity to help throughout the school day in the different classrooms, as well as tutoring Hebrew. We are blessed to have such an enthusiastic group of children who are committed to return year after year to work with our younger grades. I am very excited to welcome our new and returning students and their families and am looking forward to what this year brings. This year begins with the hope that our school will become a second home to our students and their families, and will make a difference in their lives. I would like to wish our families and our congregation a happy and healthy new year.

Stress Relievers for the New School YearBy Hunter Gold

I hope everyone in the Youth Department had a great summer. The last time we met was in July for the Nesher mixer with our Skype buddies. Some of our USYER's joined up with our Nesher buddies during their trips around Israel. As Summer and August came to a close we got together for one last summer program before school started up again.. To kick off our school year, we had a Youth Department Open House to welcome in all new and old members. Whether you moved up to a new school like me or just went up a grade level in the same school, the relaxation and tranquility of summer vacation becomes overpowered by the stress of bell schedules, school zones and traffic, homework and exams. I honestly love school and

getting to meet up with friends, but I don’t enjoy having all the pressure of due dates, earlier wake up times, and constant worries of grades always lingering in my mind. Although there is no way to eliminate stress, there are ways to relieve the amount of stress you have. For example, give yourself five minutes in the morning right after you wake up and five minutes right before you go to bed to practice breathing deeply to clear your mind and get the tension out. Other things I would suggest doing would be to get at least eight hours of sleep each day so you’re not exhausted at school, do some stretches or yoga to release the strain throughout your body. Practice meditation or self-guided imagery, some of which can even be found on YouTube. Do something your passionate about for at least 10 minutes to take your mind off the stress. Of course, one of my favorite stress relieving activi-ties is getting together with my friends which makes me happy when I think of reconnecting with my USY family. I hope everyone enjoyed the last bit of sun, now it’s time to start thinking about the holidays. As the year is starting back in full swing, I hope it was a stress-free transition back into school.

SisterhoodJune Fletcher, Sisterhood Presidentsisterhood @TBTST.org

Sisterhood started its new "semester" of activities with a meet and mingle on August 24 for our new and returning members. Earlier this month, we made silver beaded serving items. These serving items make excellent gifts. Our "opening" luncheon will be on October 8 and will feature jukebox bingo, a different take on an old favorite. I look forward to seeing you then for some laughs and a fun time.

I met with our Hebrew school and Early Childhood Center directors to discuss plans for the new semester. Toda raba to Ronit for her accomplishments this past year which resulted in our temple receiving another Shechter award, and warm welcome to Mindy Goldenberg, our new ECC director. Sisterhood will continue to sponsor and participate in several of the activities

planned for our young members. One of the main reasons to be involved with sisterhood, aside from making friends and participating in various events, is the support we give (and not just financially) the education and in-volvement of our children and grandchildren through ECC and our Hebrew school. It is vital that our youngsters have the encouragement and materials they need to learn what it is to be Jewish, to understand the meaning of and reason why certain prayers are said and when, and why certain activities are done daily and weekly at home and at shul. In summary: each generation learns something from the one before it and then passes something onto the next generation. We are obligated to contribute what we can, in volunteer hours, school supplies, and the like, and not always just hard cash (although it's always welcome!) to help with the task of making this world a little better. Although the work certainly won't be completed in our lifetime, it is vital that we do what we can. For sisterhood, an important part of our "mission statement" is to ensure that our next generation has access to the tools here in our school and ECC to help our children learn, today and tomorrow, what it means to be Jew-ish, and to take pride in our faith, culture and history.

To ponder: Our children will pick up on what we don't do and don't say, just as easily as they will on what we actually do and say....

L'Shana tovah to you and yours, kind regards,June

Men's ClubDr. Alan Miller, [email protected]

Well September is upon us again. It a special month because of the High Holidays, school (both secular, daycare, and religious) starting and, on a personal level, Barbara and I will be returning to South Florida after being away for 4 months in Rural Tennessee. Though it was nice to do my Sabbath prayers on the deck overlooking a small lake, I missed the Rabbi’s sermon, the Cantor’s chanting, and most of all the camaraderie of our Temple family.

The Men’s club is looking forward to this year. We had a dramatic increase of active members last year at our monthly meetings and activities. Hopefully it was just a start. We will be helping out and cooking at many functions, we are working with the school to again have at least one Movie Sunday and lunch. Activities with the teen group will be pursued. Everyone needs to get out their Panther gear as a Night at the Panthers will be planned. The membership is looking for other social activities, suggestions are welcomed. We will have the Men’s club Sabbath, World Wide Wrap, building the Succoth with a Barbecue lunch, and planning events for Yom Hashoah. Of course, we will again be sponsor/co-sponsor some Sunday breakfast lectures.

We want all men in the temple to consider this their club. Our meetings are informal and all are welcome. Any and all suggestions for new programs are welcomed. If you can’t make a meeting just call or email me with any suggestions you may have for improving your club or adding to its activities.

Glad to be coming back. Hope to see you soon.Alan Miller, Alpha16 [email protected], Cell 954-8152644

And The Survey Says..............

The Membership Committee is excited to present the results of the recent survey of our congregants. I’m happy to report that we had over 90 participants, considered a good response in the “survey world”.

Approximately 90% of our congregants agreed that TBTST provided a “welcoming environment” and “offered programs and activities that were appealing”. Nearly three quarters of you felt that the shul was an “important part of your lives”.

60% of those responding attend services on Shabbat morning with 35% attending Friday night. When asked why they attend services, 71% indicated that it felt good and 65% felt the “need to be part of a congregation”. The most enjoyable elements to our services: the “Rabbi’s sermon” (94%) and the “Cantor’s chanting” (71%).

The vast majority found the office staff friendly and courteous (83%) and Rabbi Gold approachable when help was needed (81%). Of those who had the opportunity to interact with the Cantor Kramarow, all agreed that she was ready, willing and able to help.

Participants also weighed in with their opinions on programming and education subjects. The top three: “Jewish holidays, rituals and customs”; “Prayer skills and service comprehension”; and “current events in the Middle East”.

Many chose to write in specific comments rather than just answering the multiple choice. Some examples: - “Everything about our synagogue is meaningful and enjoyable to me. I especially love the interaction with other congregants” - “The synagogue is always a warm and welcoming atmosphere.” - “Whenever I can attend, it is enjoyable.” - ”An opportunity to learn with and from others.” - “I love TBTST.”

There were also comments containing constructive criticisms and suggestions for improving the TBTST experi-ence. They will be addressed by the appropriate personnel.

You are welcome to peruse all the data collected in this survey. A copy of the complete survey can be viewed in the temple office.

As Membership VP, I’m very pleased with the results of this survey. You’ve told us what you like and why as well as what we can improve. On behalf of myself and my committee, I would like to thank all who took the time to participate.

The tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradition. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our com-munity depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow,

but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

Thank you for your donation.

TBTST looks forward to acknowledging significant milestones in the lives of our members. Please notify the Temple Office when you have a birthday or anniversary to celebrate. We are constantly updating our records and we want to be timely in offering you a mazel tov. If you have a family member, or know of a fellow congregant, who is ailing or in the hospital, please notify us as well. The Rabbi tries to visit hospitalized members and we will include them in our Prayers for the Sick (see form elsewhere in this issue.) When you contact us, please include your phone number and make sure we have your email address.

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we receive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

ELUL 5777 / TISHREI 5778 NAME

YahzreitsOne of the most beautiful and meaningful customs of the Jewish people is remembering

those we have lost by memorializing our beloved through acts of Tzedakah and by saying Kaddish. The following Yahrzeits will be acknowledged and Kaddish will be said during

Shabbat Services on the dates below.

ELUL 5777 / TISHREI 5778 NAME

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle. Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.
