Matthew 5:14

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 8–9, 2020

A Note from Our Pastor,

This weekend the St. Agatha Respect Life Committee is holding its annual Baby Shower in the Gathering Space after our Saturday 4:30pm Mass and all our Sunday Masses ex-

cept the 5pm. I am very grateful to Paul and Mary McDonough for taking the lead in this very important initia-tive again this year, and to the Middle School students from St. Agatha School and their religion teacher Ms. Victoria Perez for their participation and commitment. Please come for refreshments and conversation, and consider donating baby clothes, any other necessities of life for newborn ba-bies and their mothers, gift certificates/cards, or cash. All gifts will be gladly received and put to good use! Our gen-erous and loving response to aid expectant mothers and mothers of newborn babies in need will serve as a striking contrast to the extreme death-dealing legislation being pro-posed in our own Massachusetts State Legislature.

Also this weekend we celebrate World Marriage Day and ask God that all the graces of the Sacrament of Matrimony may flow in abundance for the married couples in our par-ish community, for their families, and for our society which desperately needs the strong witness that those mar-ried in Christ provide by their love and faithfulness to their marriage vows.

I imagine that many of us on New Year’s Day watched some of the college football Bowl games and then last Sunday watched the Super Bowl. If for some reason you happened to enjoy some liquid refreshments, your empties can help fund our high school youth mission trip to Appa-lachia this summer. So, once again this weekend we’ll happily receive your empty cans and bottles in the garage behind the rectory. Thank you!

I’ll be on my annual retreat this week from this Sunday until next Saturday with more than 50 other priests from the Archdiocese of Boston. I’ll certainly be keeping the members of our parish and school in my prayers, and I ask your prayers for me and my brother priests.

One special intention of mine during this retreat will be for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all the members of our parish. Last Saturday more than 20 members of our parish community spent the day at Holy Family Parish in Duxbury to get fired up about the privilege we all have in being disciples of the Lord Jesus, and about ways we can help spread the Good News of Jesus and encourage others to become faithful and loving disciples of Jesus them-selves. This weekend Fr. Jay and I will be speaking at our weekend Masses about a new initiative for our parish—ALPHA, which will begin this upcoming season of Lent. We’ll say a word or two about ALPHA, about our hopes for our parish as we embark upon ALPHA, and we’ll be asking for two things from all our parishioners—that you

commit yourselves to pray that the Holy Spirit will do great things in and through us all to enliven our parish (please note the Prayer to the Holy Spirit on “The Sacred Pause” page of this bulletin), and that you will consider inviting people you know to take part in this engaging, down-to-earth, and non-threatening initiative.

In our Church Calendar we remember Saint Scholastica on Monday. She lived in Italy in the 6th century and was the sister of St. Benedict the founder of western monasticism. St. Scholastica was the head of a convent of sisters and on at least one occasion through her fervent prayer got the upper hand over her saintly brother!

On Tuesday we celebrate Our Lady of Lourdes when our Blessed Mother appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858 in France. On this day we observe the World Day of the Sick.

On Friday we commemorate two brothers Cyril and Meth-odius who lived in the 9th century and spread the Gospel among the Slavic people. They are patron saints of both eastern and western Europe and, as Pope St. John Paul II put it, were the “spiritual bridge between Eastern and Western traditions” in Christianity. And how much “bridge-building” is so urgently needed still today!

Have a blessed week!

THEME: We are all called to be children of the light.

What images do the words Light and Salt create in your mind’s eye? When you hear and imagine those things, do you use your eyes and your taste buds when you hear them?

Gospel : Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

Pastoral Planning

February 9 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Winter’s darkness still enfolds us and so the theme of light and darkness in today’s readings is very apropos for us to ponder. In the first reading, Isaiah gives us an antidote, reminding us that performing works of mercy can bring light into the darkness. In the Gospel, “Jesus said to his disciples… You are the light of the world…. your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Are your words and actions pointing people to Jesus? If they are not, what will you do to be a light in the darkness this week?

Next week as you drive by St. Agatha Church you will notice that something is missing. But it’s nothing to be alarmed about! The sign on the side lawn of the Church facing Adams St. is being removed so it can be restored. Like all of us, the sign was starting to show the signs of age and the finish was beginning to crack and peel. The sign, which was installed in the 90’s, is subject to all kinds of weather—from the blistering summer sun to the harsh winter snow and wind—so it is not surprising that it is in need of some restorative work which will maintain the gold leaf type but will change the background color to make it a bit brighter and more visible. The company that originally built and installed the sign will be doing the work. By a strange coincidence, this same company in-stalled a new sign at Pope St. John Seminary when Fr. Palardy was Rector there! So the sign will be removed within the next week or so and the restoration will take about a month. The sign will then be-installed, although the date of the re-installation will be dependent upon the weather. If Punxsutawney Phil is to be believed, we’re due for an early spring, so it may not be too long of a wait. However, since Phil has been right only 36% of the time, we’ll see!

This weekend, our priests are speaking about the program ALPHA and are inviting you to participate. We are also asking YOU—to prayerfully consider who you might in-vite to explore the questions of life—and to take a second look at the richness of the Christian Message. Swing by the table after Mass and talk to our lay folks who are leading this exciting initiative. Be awakened in the Faith again—Lent is made for this! Be a “fisher” and invite a friend or your loved ones to join in community and joyful dialogue. Starting March 4 “come and see” and

share a meal together,

watch an inspiring video (with beautiful imagery, sights and sounds from around the world),

and engage in conversation about real life, real strug-gle, real hope, real faith!

Calling Cursillistas for a special prayer ministry. Our parish is blessed by so many who have lived a Cursillo weekend. We, as a parish, are indebted to Deacon Dan and Anne Louise Sullivan for their continuing labor of love in the Cursillo movement. Many of our parishioners have also served on weekends as well. In fact, people are still being invited to live Cursillo.

If you have lived Cursillo or served on a team, you re-member the wonderful Cursillo practice of having some-one praying in the Chapel while the talks were happening. The one who went to chapel and prayed—was in effect asking God to bless the one giving the talk and to bless those listening.

We would like to have a group of people praying in our Chapel for all who are participating in ALPHA. Join us for dinner at 6:30 PM, watch the video together at 7:00 PM, and then visit our Lord in Chapel for prayer and in-tercession—from 7:45 PM until 8:30 PM. Please see the “sign up” sheet in this bulletin to commit to a time of prayer. This will help us plan for food.

To ALL our Parishioners: please invite someone to participate in the ALPHA sessions.

The Sacred Pause Lisa M. Gulino—Pastoral Associate

Has God Abandoned His Church?…NO!!!!

Men, come hear Columbian Father Robert Clark talk about how God is rebuilding the Church & simple ways we can connect with the Spirit living in each one of us. Fr. Clark will describe how Pope Francis is building on the legacies of St. J.P.II and Benedict 16th by leading the church toward an engagement with the Christ of the gospels. We need to rediscover Jesus in our Catholic life, stop focusing on the church’s errors, and real-ize how very close God is to each one of us. Please bring a friend and be ready to grow your spiritual wings!!!!

Saint Agatha School

Saint Agatha School: Catholic Schools:

Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.

Now that our celebration of Na-tional Catholic Schools Week is over, Fr. Palardy, Mrs. Carr, fac-

ulty, staff and students wish to thank the families, parish-ioners and friends who helped make our week special. We appreciate the time you spent learning about the Saint Agatha School community.

In Catholic schools, we are all learners, servants and lead-ers. These shared qualities are what make Catholic schools work. They are what make Catholic schools suc-ceed. Thank you for being part of our community.

Meeting Christ in Prayer is a guided prayer experience based on the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius Loyola. By prayer, reflection and faith sharing, Meeting Christ in Prayer can bring people to a new level of discipleship and to a re-newed sense of Christian mission. The Meeting Christ in Pray-er group meets once a week for eight weeks with Sr. Anne D’Arcy. Participants pray with suggested scripture texts daily.

The next group will meet during Lent: Wednesday evenings 7:00 – 8:15 PM

March 4-11-18-25, April 1-8-15-22, 2020 at Fontbonne Convent, 444 Centre Street Milton, MA 02186
