A Note from Our Pastor,

Last week we turned our gaze more attentive-ly to Mary the Mother of Jesus and our Blessed Mother on the Solemnity of the Im-maculate Conception on Tuesday and on the

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Saturday. As we enter this final week of Advent we focus our attention intently on the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ, and continue to keep our gaze on the Blessed Mother. As a springboard for our prayer I am giving my Pastor’s col-umn this week to the 12th-century Cistercian Abbot (head monk) and Doctor of the Church St. Bernard of Clairvaux whose Homily “In Praise of the Virgin Mother” puts us into the scene of this weekend’s Gospel: the Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel asks for Mary’s answer to God’s request that she be the Mother of His Son. Feel free to use your imagination as though you are an eyewitness to this most sacred event, and see where the Lord and the Blessed Mother lead you. The following text is taken from Volume 1 of The Liturgy of the Hours. New York: Catholic Book Publishing Co., 1975, pages 345-346:

You have heard, O Virgin, that you will conceive and bear a son; you have heard that it will not be by man but by the Holy Spirit. The angel awaits an answer; it is time for him to return to God who sent him. We too are waiting, O Lady, for your word of compassion; the sentence of condemna-tion weighs heavily upon us.

The price of our salvation is offered to you. We shall be set free at once if you consent. In the eter-nal Word of God we all came to be, and behold, we die. In your brief response we are to be remade in order to be recalled to life.

Tearful Adam with his sorrowing family begs this of you, O loving Virgin, in their exile from Para-dise. Abraham begs it, David begs it. All the other holy patriarchs, your ancestors, ask it of you, as they dwell in the country of the shadow of death. This is what the whole earth waits for, prostrate at your feet. It is right in doing so, for on your word depends comfort for the wretched, ransom for the captive, freedom for the condemned, indeed, sal-vation for all the [children] of Adam, the whole of your race.

Answer quickly, O Virgin. Reply in haste to the angel, or rather through the angel to the Lord. An-swer with a word, receive the Word of God. Speak your own word, conceive the divine Word. Breathe a passing word, embrace the eternal Word.

Why do you delay, why are you afraid? Believe, give praise, and receive. Let humility be bold, let

modesty be confident. This is no time for virginal simplicity to forget prudence. In this matter alone, O prudent Virgin, do not fear to be presumptuous. Though modest silence is pleasing, dutiful speech is now more necessary. Open your heart to faith, O blessed Virgin, your lips to praise, your womb to the Creator. See, the desired of all nations is at your door, knocking to enter. If he should pass by because of your delay, in sorrow you would begin to seek him afresh, the One whom your soul loves. Arise, hasten, open. Arise in faith, hasten in devo-tion, open in praise and thanksgiving. “Behold the handmaid of the Lord,” she says, “be it done to me according to your word.”

THE WEEKLY UPDATE

Time certainly is moving very quickly. Christmas is fast approaching and we’re just finishing our fall clean-up. John Driscoll Landscaping finished the last of the leaf col-lection last week. Hunt Landscaping, the company that does our major tree work, has fallen behind schedule be-cause of some of the extremely high winds lately that have caused significant tree damage. We were fortunate, but want to get the work done before the next wind event when we might not be so fortunate. So hopefully our Fall clean-up will be completed before Winter officially begins!

Also a quick note of thanks to everyone who participated in the virtual Giving Tree program to support the families served by My Brother’s Keeper. And a special thank you goes out to Mike O’Hanlon and his family for their work coordinating this parish tradition in this most unusual year. It is mind-boggling to think that this is the end of our third DECADE of sponsoring this project. Maintaining a minis-try of this nature for 30 years is a remarkable feat and a testament to the generous spirit of St. Agatha parishioners.

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

“Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. Pastoral Planning December 20 ~ Fourth Sunday of Advent

Today’s Gospel is the familiar story of the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary. Imagine this gospel scene and focus on the conversation between Mary and the An-gel. “The Lord is with you.” “Do not be afraid.” “Nothing is impossible for God.” “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Mary trusted that God was with her and that she had nothing to fear. With all the uncertainties, ques-tions and challenges of this past year, how have you, like Mary been able to trust that God was with you? Take a few minutes each day to pray the “Hail Mary” asking for Mary’s help to strengthen your trust in God.

The Saint Rock Haiti Foundation (SRHF) is organizing a “29 Day Hike to School” between Thanksgiving and Christ-mas. Individuals and teams can sign up to raise money for SRHF’s education program which supports five schools in the hills southwest of Port-au-Prince. Registration is FREE and participants are asked to walk, run, or hike 10 miles or climb 200 flights of stairs to simulate the difficult trek to school children in Haiti make every day. SRHF suggests a minimum fundraising goal of $50 for every participant. Fami-lies, schools, clubs, and other groups are encouraged to work together to spread awareness and raise funds.

In many regions of Haiti, fewer than 30% of students will attend school through the 6th grade. In most cases this is due to financial hardship. The Saint Rock Haiti Foundation realizes that education is imperative for sustained social and economic development, as well as good health, and is committed to providing basic educational opportunities to the children of Saint Rock.

Updated Weekend Mass Schedule

As of November 29th, the new Mass schedule is 7:30am, 9:30am and 11:30am on Sunday. There is NO change to the 4:30pm Mass on Saturday or the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday. The 9:30am Family Mass will be livestreamed in place of the existing 11:00 am Mass.

Please check the bulletin if you have scheduled a Mass intention for the adjusted Mass times. This change is contingent on current COVID-19 proto-cols staying in place. Please check our website for the most up-to-date instructions. Thank you.

In addition to the protocols currently in place for in-person Mass attendance, we will continue to collect contact tracing information for all attendees. Please submit your contact information on our website (here) before coming to Mass. If you do not have access to our website, you will be able to give that information to the parish ambassador at the en-trance to the church upon arrival. If we were to discover that someone at any given Mass tests positive for COVID-19 in the following weeks, we want to be able to inform all of you so that, in consultation with your physician, you can take the appropriate steps. Please note that any notice will not in-clude the name of the person who tested positive, which will be kept confidential, but only the Mass (date and time) which they attended and any other relevant non-personal infor-mation. Please give yourself extra time when arriving for Mass to be seated. Thank you.

There will be opportunity for Adoration following the 9:00am Mass on Fridays. It will take place from approximately 9:30am-noon. Unless there is a funeral scheduled, then it will conclude at 10:30am.

Baptism: 2:00pm on the 2nd/ 4th Sundays of each month. If you have already scheduled your child’s Baptism and need to reschedule (or to ask any other questions), please call or email the Rectory. Reconciliation: Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:00pm in the Meeting Room adjacent to the Gathering Space in the lower church. Masks required. Also available by appointment with one of our priests.
