Ohio Citizen ActionOhio Citizen Action, the state’s largestenvironmental organization, has practiceddoor-to-door democracy across Ohio since1975. The organization is known for itspioneering roles in passing toxic chemicalright-to-know laws and in developing “goodneighbor campaigns,” which use the powerof community organizing to convince majorindustries to prevent pollution at theirfacilities. Ohio Citizen Action’s Money inPolitics project has been, since 1994, theauthoritative source for data and analysis ofthe role of big money in Ohio politics. Sandy Buchanan joined the staff of OhioCitizen Action as a student intern in 1977.

She served as Cleveland area director andthen as director of the organization’senvironmental and legislative programs,before becoming executive director in 1993.She has represented the organization innational environmental campaigns and thenews media, and serves on the board of theEnvironmental Working Group. Sandy andher husband, Bill Whitney, live in the WestPark neighborhood of Cleveland with theirtwo sons.

Michael Cole has served as the Senior VicePresident for Institutional Advancement atThe Cleveland Institute of Art since 2002,overseeing the Institute’s fundraising andalumni affairs functions. He was previously asenior executive in the Private Client group atNational City Bank and Director ofEndowments and Foundations at the JewishCommunity Federation of Cleveland, and hasserved on many community boards. Mike ismarried to Bonnie Cole and has two adultchildren.

When Howard M. Metzenbaum retired fromthe U.S. Senate in 1994, Ohio Citizen Actiondecided to honor him by presenting anaward in his name. Throughout his years ofservice in the Senate, Senator Metzenbaum’sname was synonymous with principledtenacity and fighting for what’s right.

During his eighteen years of service in theU.S. Senate, Sen. Metzenbaum never stoppedbeing outraged at injustice and neverstopped fighting for the rights of workingpeople and consumers.

Senator Metzenbaum passed milestoneconsumer protection laws, including plantclosing legislation, food labeling, and orphandrug legislation, and saved taxpayers billionsof dollars. After he retired from the Senate, heserved as Chairman of the Consumer

Federation of America, where he continuedhis unparalleled service, helping stop theproposed takeover of Blue Cross by ColumbiaHCA, protecting meat inspection standards,and fighting for consumer protections in thetelecommunications industry.

Senator Metzenbaum was a long-timepartner and ally of Ohio Citizen Action. Heparticipated in the founding conference ofthe organization and was a champion of theorganization’s campaigns for fair utility rates,toxic chemical right to know laws, andadvance notice of plant closings.

Senator Metzenbaum died in March 2008 atthe age of 90. He is survived by his wifeShirley, his four daughters, Barbara, Susan,Shelley, and Amy, and their families.

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease (a condition in which thebody’s immune system attacks its own tissues) which involvesthe overproduction of collagen. This chronic connective tissuedisease visibly manifests itself through hardening of the skin.However, it also attacks the internal organs, including the heart,lungs, kidneys, and esophagus. The cause of this life threateningdisease is unknown, as is the cure.

The Scleroderma Foundation is the leading non-profitsupporter of scleroderma research in the United States,allotting more than $1 million annually to find the cause of andcure for scleroderma. The foundation facilitates health andprofessional seminars, produces and distributes literature and

Phil DonahuePhil Donahue and the DONAHUE show havebeen honored with twenty Daytime EmmyAwards, including nine for Outstanding Hostand a George Foster Peabody BroadcastingJournalism Award. Phil Donahue used thetelevision talk show format he pioneered in1967 to interview world leaders, celebrities,newsmakers and people from all walks of life.For over 29 years, DONAHUE examinedhuman behavior, focused national debates onpolitical and social issues and has provided ademocratic forum for presidential candidates.

The format he introduced on November 6,1967, as The Phil Donahue Show on WLWD-TV in Dayton, Ohio, launched the firstaudience participation television talk showand changed the face of American daytimetelevision. For his outstanding contribution to television and American culture, Phil wasinducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame on November 20, 1993.As host of DONAHUE, he presided over nearly 7,000 one-hour daily shows, many on-locationbroadcasts and several historic broadcasts from Russia.

Phil hosted a talk show on MSNBC in 2002. Although it was MSNBC’s highest rated show atthe time, the show was cancelled in 2003. An MSNBC study later obtained by AllYourTV.comcommented that Donahue presented a “difficult public face for NBC in a time of war......Heseems to delight in presenting guests who are anti-war, anti-Bush and skeptical of theadministration’s motives.”

After meeting wounded Iraq War veteran Tomas Young at Walter Reed Army Medical Center,Phil teamed up with documentary film-maker Ellen Spiro to make Body of War. The film hasreceived many accolades, and was named Best Documentary of 2007 by the National Board ofReview.

Phil was born in St. Colman’s parish in Cleveland’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, and thenmoved to West Park, where he attended Our Lady of Angels Elementary School. He was amember of the first graduating class of St. Edward High School in Lakewood in 1953, andgraduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1957. He began his broadcasting career as aproduction assistant at Cleveland’s NBC affiliate.

Susan HyattSusan Hyatt and her husband Joel co-founded Hyatt Legal Services in Cleveland in 1977. Theyhelped to revolutionize the legal services’ delivery system by making legal care affordableand accessible to middle and lower-income families nationwide. Hyatt Legal Services hasserved more people than any other law firm in the country. Previously, Susan was a specialeducation teacher in the Cincinnati public school system.

Susan’s civic and philanthropic activities include her membership on the boards of the SiliconValley Community Foundation, NARAL Pro-Choice America in Washington, D.C. and theChildren’s Health Council in Palo Alto. She is the chair of the public interest committee of thePeninsula for Jewish Family and Children’s Services in Silicon Valley. She has also served onthe boards of the Child Welfare League of America in Washington, D.C., Womenspace, Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, the Jewish Community Federation, and Center forPrevention of Domestic Violence, and the advisory board of Case Western Reserve UniversitySchool of Law. Susan received the Deborah Award from the American Jewish Congress, andthe President’s Award from Womenspace.

Susan is one of Howard and Shirley Metzenbaum’s four daughters, and grew up in ShakerHeights. She and Joel now live in Atherton, California with their two sons.

Lisa Crawford founded Fernald Residents forEnvironmental Safety and Health (F.R.E.S.H.),a non-profit organization whose grassrootsefforts resulted in the shut-down andsubsequent $4.4 billion clean-up of theformer Fernald nuclear weapons facility.Mother, wife, and full-time volunteercoordinator at the Pauline Warfield LewisCenter, Lisa served as president of F.R.E.S.H.since 1985. Lisa's dedication broughtworldwide attention to the issues andconcerns of living in the shadows of anuclear weapons facility.

Noreen Warnock

Allen County Citizens for the

Environment, Bluffton

Noreen Warnock received the award for herwork in dealing with the biggest polluter inthe state, BP America. In 1987, Warnockhelped organize Allen County Citizens for theEnvironment. Her group prevented industryfrom locating a hazardous waste incineratorin Allen County, defeated a land-farm forhazardous waste, organized Mother's Day

rallies to highlight environmental issues, andforced the reduction of tens of thousands ofpounds of toxic emissions from the BP plant.

Galen ‘Butch’ Lemke

beryllium activist, Elmore

Butch Lemke worked at the Brush Wellmanberyllium facility in Elmore, Ohio for ten yearsmaking parts for American weapons. In 1970,he was diagnosed with chronic berylliumdisease, an incurable lung disease caused byexposure to beryllium dust. Althoughdependent on an oxygen tank for 15 years,Butch crusaded to help other victims of thedisease and to expose conditions at theBrush Wellman facility. He spurred a majorinvestigative series in the Toledo Blade, andhelped organize support networks for victimsof the disease. Brush Wellman ultimatelymade major changes to their operations toimprove health and safety. Butch died in1999, and the Metzenbaum award waspresented posthumously to his family.

Baldemar Velasquez is the founder andpresident of the Farm Labor OrganizingCommittee (FLOC), a union of migrant farmworkers working for better quality of life.Baldemar is an inspirational leader, minister,and musician who has dedicated his life toorganizing. His union won unprecedentedrepresentation agreements with theCampbell’s Soup Company, and the Mt. OlivePickle Company. Headquartered in Toledo,FLOC is a national and international leaderfor workers rights and health and safety.

Art Minson

civil rights and union activist, Akron

Art Minson was a community activist inAkron, Ohio for more than half a century. Hereceived the Metzenbaum award inrecognition of his lifetime of leadership oncivil rights, with the United Rubber Workersand the Coming Together project, as acommunity activist with East AkronCommunity House and National People'sAction, as a leader of the Millenium Fund forChildren, and as a leader of Ohio CitizenAction's local and statewide toxic chemicalright-to-know campaigns. Art died in 2005 atthe age of 91.

Teresa Mills, Buckeye

Environmental Network, Columbus

Teresa Mills is one of the most importantenvironmental activists and relentlessfighters for environmental justice in Ohio. In1994, Teresa turned from a housewife to anactivist as she led her neighborhood tovictory over the Columbus trash-burningpower plant. Since this victory, she has goneon to become nationally-recognized as one ofthe best and most reliable resources on toxicpollution issues and organizing to winagainst corporate polluters. Teresa is now thedirector of the Buckeye EnvironmentalNetwork, which she and others formed tooffer guidance and technical assistance tocitizen groups facing toxic hazards.

Laura Rench, Citizens for the

Responsible Destruction of Chemical

Weapons, Dayton

As an organizer with The Citizens for theResponsible Destruction of ChemicalWeapons, Laura Rench led a campaign whichprevented the US Army from shipping VXhydrosylate, a byproduct of VX nerve gas, intothe Jefferson Township community of

Dayton. She organized hundreds ofneighbors to protest the proposal, helped get35 government entities and communitygroups to pass resolutions against theproposal, and pressured the county towithdraw a sewage treatment permit forPermaFix. In October 2003, the Armywithdrew its proposal to ship the nerve gasto Dayton.

Health Watch, Cleveland

Stu has dedicated his life's work to makinghis community and, by extension, the world abetter place. Over the last 21 years, he madeEnvironmental Health Watch a keyenvironmental advocate both locally andnationally. Through his leadership,Environmental Health Watch broughtmillions of federal dollars to Cleveland tobegin the clean-up of the city's hugeenvironmental lead problem. EnvironmentalHealth Watch is nationally known andrespected for its expertise on healthy homesand childhood environmental health issues.

Debra Cochran

community activist, Pageville

When Debra Cochran, a resident of Pagevillein Meigs County, began hearing news reportsabout DuPont's contamination of drinkingwater with the Teflon chemical C8 in 2002,she wondered whether her children's healthcould be harmed by the chemical. Debraused her experience as an educator toresearch and prepare informational materialsabout the dangers of C8, and beganattending and speaking at any publicmeeting where the issue could be broughtup. She used a variety of tactics to bring theissue into the open, including proposing apetition to have DuPont removed from theAmerican Chemistry Council's "ResponsibleCare" program.
