President’s Best Wishes to everyone and a Summertime Message,

it will be a summer like no other….

Each summer is unique. Never is a summer the same. This summer has its own special memories and

opportunities before us, like Memorial Day and June 6 D-Day to reflect on the Greatest Generation and their

contributions for us to keep the freedoms we have… June 14, Flag Day to salute this Great Country of ours… June

21, Father’s Day: we Hail and honor the champion eccentric that perplexes the rest of the family (to my family’s

chagrin, I do it by cutting my hair on the front steps) then the BBQs of July 4th and Ice Cream socials. The calendar

dates are there; these events are ours to make… find the silver lining….

At the Lodge, when poop happens, our terrific nisse stewards find silver linings. A sewer trunk failed… no one at the

Lodge… workers need essential jobs… Plunger in hand, Nisse Mike Nelson led the charge, Nisse Bob Schertzl found

the “gold”… Job accomplished. The Lodge empty, what to do? Clean, Re-coat the Lodge wood floor! Thanks to

Nisse Bill Hicks, Mike Nelson, Greg Seymour with Sherwin-Williams 50% off via Seth Tufteland. Our Lodge and

Building Association Boards are strong active contributors, facing challenges and teaming together! Fortunate are

we to have such Stewards. Another silver lining: a groundswell of May 17th spirit erupted with a joyful Syttende Mai

socially-distant parade at the Bothell Lodge plus a parade of cars thru the nearby community; Hip Hip Hurrah for

Chris Hicks leading.

Very special thanks to the heroes providing essential support… grocery, medical, hardware, transportation, delivery,

distant learning and other essential services. We salute YOU! WE THANK YOU!!! Support those that provide

services so the rest of us are safe. Salute to social distancing!

Thankfully, few members have had the virus. Very best wishes and prayers to them and their families.

We are adaptable. Norms change, they always do. Last year to Zoom meant one thing; this year it means

something else. When arriving at the grocery, I stun myself asking my son, do you have your mask? like a gangster

in a 1930’s movie. It is normal for “normal” to change. No day is exactly like the next, eventually all those days add

up; then we notice the change. Not only do we become our parents, but our grandparents. Uff Da! Instead of

technologies of a hundred years ago, we have the technologies and science of today, leading to the world of

tomorrow. Today, spacecraft transform solar power into radio frequency energy and beams this to the ground.

Wow! Star Trek is here. Beam me up Scotty!

Please continue sending money to the Lodge for foodbanks; even more food is needed for local needs. By actively

participating in food drives and other assistance our members make a difference.

For updates on all upcoming events, call 425-485-9085; as the answering machine’s message is playing, press

268*1; the machine will tell you what is happening this month and maybe the next month.

Please consider contributions to your Lodge; send to “Sons of Norway Bothell Lodge” at PO Box 492, Bothell, WA 98041. While expenses continue (e.g., Property Taxes); fund raising stopped.

Best wishes for the grand summer before you. Be Safe. Be Sane. Be Back soon. Vi elske deg. (We love you),

President Bob (Socially distant, virtual Viking hug)

Kulturelt Hjørne (Culture Corner) Hei min venner,

• If you want to work on any of the cultural skills badges, you can get them on the International website, or email me and I will send you the packet either by postal mail or email.

• I will highlight some of the badges each month. This month, cooking! In Part 1, you’re going to dive right in and prepare five traditional Norwegian dishes. For each item you make, you will take a picture, fill out a recipe review form and include these with your final report. Which items you make is up to you, but be sure to select from a wide variety, for example, open-faced sandwiches, oven-baked salmon, rømmegrøt, Norwegian sweet soup and your grandma’s cardamom coffee cake. You can either prepare them all at once, or one at a time. However, none of the items you make for part 1 may be duplicated for parts 2 and 3, so plan accordingly. Activity 1: Prepare 5 traditional Norwegian recipes Take a picture of each dish prepared to be included with the recipe review form. Complete a review form for each recipe prepared. The recipes can be prepared at the same time or one by one. The dishes that are prepared in this part may not be duplicated in parts 2 and 3. Activity 2: Complete one elective activity. Elective activities are found on pages 25 & 26. Submitting your work Complete the Cooking Pin Application Form, including all of the following items:

• One review form for each recipe prepared (5 total) • At least one photo of each recipe in process • One photo of each recipe prepared (5 total) • Elective activity requirements • Unit evaluation form

For Part 2 you will be focusing on traditional Norwegian baked goods and desserts. Many Norwegian treats well-known to North Americans belong in this category (like lefse and krumkake) while others may be new to you. This time, you will make 4 recipes, 1 each from categories listed below, take pictures of them and fill out recipe review forms for each. Remember however, that no recipes may be duplicated from Part 1. Activity 1: Prepare one Norwegian recipe from each of the four categories listed below:

• Fancy Cake: for example, kransekake, bløtkake, etc. • Bread: for example, flatbread, vafler, lefse, etc. • Cookie: for example, krumkake, goro, sirupssnipper, smultringer, fattingmann, etc. • Dessert or Candy: for example, karameller, marsipan, trollkrem, riskrem, fruktsuppe, karamellpudding, etc.

Complete a review form for each recipe prepared. Take a picture of each dish and include it with the recipe review form. The dishes that are prepared in this part may not be duplicated in Part 1. Recipes can be prepared at the same time or one by one. Activity 2: Complete one elective activity. Elective activities are found on pages 25 & 26. Complete the Cooking Pin Application Form, including all of the following items:

• One review form for each recipe prepared (4 total) • At least one photo of each recipe in process • One photo of each recipe prepared (4 total) • Elective activity requirements • Unit evaluation form

Exercise during COVID

Walking may be one of the best and easiest exercises to do while we stay home and maintain social distancing.

Some of the benefits include; improving muscle strength, promoting stronger bones, burning body fat, stimulating

chemicals in your brain that make you happy and boosting your cardiovascular and respiratory health.

As you walk and log your miles during the summer you can follow the virtual pilgrimage from Oslo to Trondheim on

the SON webpage.

Sons of Norway’s Virtual Pilgrimage

The Sons of Norway Virtual Pilgrimage is a window into the experience of the pilgrims in Norway, who walk a network

of routes called St. Olav’s Ways. On these pages, members will learn about historic landmarks and tourist

destinations along the route in Norway. Simply by getting out to walk at home and following the journey online,

members have a chance to transform into a pilgrim on a virtual journey in Norway. After 387 miles of walking, the

journey finishes at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway.

SON has some great info on their website for activities during COVID.

Use the following link:

https://www.sofn.com/resource_blog/tracking-sports-activities-while-social-distancing/

Remember to log all your sports activities this summer to earn your sports medals for the year.

If you need a sports form to document your activities during the summer, I can email them to you. Just send me an email at [email protected] and let me know which one(s) you need.

Stay healthy and safe out there, hope to see you soon.

From the Board

• Updated the phone message

• Filled in some of the pot holes in the parking lot.

• Called and had the Dumpster replaced, the bottom

had rusted out. Now that we have a new Dumpster,

it should stop some of the Critters we have visiting

our area from dragging stuff around the parking lot.

Be very careful when releasing the Bar that hold the

lid closed, there is not much clearance and it hurts

the knuckles and fingers. It won’t take very long for

you to learn this, it hurts. By the way, I will no

longer being taking the Trash out at Lodge

functions.

• Fertilized the front lawn, with Weed and Feed.

• Did some raking and cleaning out of flower beds.

• Picked up pine cones

• Put a new coat of finish on the Lodge main hall

floor. It Looks great.

• Cleaned some of the Debris of the roof and cleaned

up the Gutters. We will be replacing some of the

Sponges that are in the Gutters. The sponges help

the gutters from filling up with Pine cones and

Leaves. They cost with tax about $10.00 a 4 foot

section. At the Board meeting people hollered out -

Put me down for 2 sections Bill Hicks, Greg

Seymour and Mike Nelson to name a few.

• Repainted all the Stump table tops.

• Painted the ( Enter Sons of Norway ) Nissan at the

entrance from Grease Monkey.

The Nyheter is going paperless!

The last paper and mailed issue of The Nyheter will

be the Summer 2020 edition.

Beginning with the

September 2020 edition,

we will be emailing The

Nyheter to your email

address on file.

If you do NOT have an

email address recorded with the Sons of Norway, we

will continue to mail you a Nyheter.

However, we encourage you, if you have an email

address you update your profile on the Sons of

Norway site with the correct email. Also, if you are

not sure your email is current, please check your

profile and update if necessary.

If you need help, please do not hesitate to contact a

lodge officer, leave a message on the lodge phone

425-485-9085 or leave a message at 425-823-0247

with a name and phone number and you will get a

call back with further information. This is a message

phone only, and not answered, so you will need to

leave a message.

We will be doing some testing of the email address

we will be using. The email will be:

[email protected].

We have found that for some this is coming in as Junk

e-mail, so please add the address to your address

book.

Going paperless was not an easy decision, but overall

it will save the lodge money by not having to print

and mail copies. Thank you for your understanding.

Nordic on Tap:

Great Scandinavian Stories and Music

There’s a new way to listen to stories from and of Norway,

on your internet-connected phone, tablet, or computer.

It’s a podcast called Nordic on Tap, available at

nordicontap.podbean.com (just type this into the address

bar or URL window). A podcast is an audio recording that

can be played anytime, at any hour, and Nordic on Tap was

born from that philosophy. No need to tune in to a radio

station at a specific hour and day. And it’s free, with no

advertising.

Nordic on Tap is a half hour program of storytelling and

music, largely through interviews and performances with

interesting people with some kind of Nordic connection.

Our tagline is Nordic on Tap: Interviews, folktales, music,

and hygge, where hygge is that Danish concept suggesting

you should grab a cup of your favorite beverage and cosy

up to our program. Yes, we do also include the Danes,

Swedes, Finns, Sami, Icelanders, and Faroese too. And folks

from around here.

So far we’ve done podcasts on a Danish folk musician (quite

a character), the Norwegian preschool (barnehage) system,

visiting a Husfliden store in Oslo in search of bunad fabric, a

talk with Seattle’s Norwegian fashion designer, Madison

Leiren, and a look at whether our Seattle Area Scandinavian

businesses are surviving closure due to the virus (and what

we can do if they’re not). Upcoming shows include one on

Scandinavian crime (noir) fiction, an interview with Sami

musician and activist Mari Boine, and one on Thor

Heyerdahl and his scientific exploits.

Every show we play folk, classical, choral and other music

that you’ll not hear on the radio nor (generally) on any CD.

No heavy metal, ever. Sorry.

We’d love to know what you’d like to learn about or hear,

and how you like our podcast. Do you have interesting

stories we can record? Do you play or sing, solo or in a

group? We’d like to record that too. Contact us at

[email protected], or visit us on Facebook, our

website, or anywhere you get your podcasts. And check us

out at nordicontap.podbean.com!

Covid 19 has Brought Out Kindness in Others During this time of Covid 19 I have noticed more kindness amongst people. People waive at each other or nod

their heads to acknowledge the other person. I hear more thank yous to those who are sanitizing carts at the

grocery stores. I was a recipient of an act of kindness from two young ladies who live below me that I had

never met until a month ago. One of them with a mask on knocked on my door and asked if I needed

anything since she thought I lived alone and she was going to the store. Even though I didn’t need anything (I

tend to be a very independent person. Just ask Don and Marlys Melrose.) but was so touched by this act of

kindness it brought me to tears. What they didn’t know was I was having a bad day. The other day they left

me a card with their names and phone number in case I need anything. I ran into one of them shortly after

(social distancing was practiced) and explained to them why their kindness meant so much to me. Since my

son died 5 years ago I am not used to someone in the younger generation checking on me much less a

stranger. On Mother’s Day they brought me flowers with a note that said, “You are a mother to us and to

anyone you meet.” The flowers also happened to be one of my favorites, gerber daisies Who knew? I also

received a card from a young lady at my church asking how I was doing since our church is closed and she was

thinking about me. Also I received calls and margarita cupcakes from Don and Marlys’ daughters. A day I was

dreading turned out to be a blessing. Laurie Beach

Dear Members, Please let me or a board member know when a fellow member needs a little cheering up or a pat on

the back. Getting a card in the mail to let someone know we are thinking of them and wishing them healing or

comfort, or celebrating in their accomplishments helps all of us to grow together as a Lodge family.

Count Down to the Bake Sale This month I am featuring the Fattigman. We get requests at our Bake Sale to have more of these favorite Norwegian delights. The twisted shape of these cookies is quite unique and easy to accomplish using a pizza cutter or pastry wheel. And what could be better than a fried cookie.

FATTIGMAN Poor Man’s Cookie

6 egg yolks

8 tablespoons sugar

6 tablespoons whipping cream

2 – 2 ½ cups flour

½ teaspoon cardamom

2 tablespoon Brandy

oil or lard for frying

powdered sugar

Beat egg yolks till creamy in color. Add sugar gradually, then beat for 5 minutes. Add WHIPPED whipping

cream, then cardamom and Brandy. Add flour. Refrigerate dough a few hours, roll out to 1/8 inch thick on

floured cloth or board, cut into diamond shapes 2 x 3 inches using a pattern cutting wheel, cut small slip in

center, bring one tip through slit from underneath, pull slightly until dough lays flat forming a knot in center.

Deep fry in lard or oil at 365 degrees until they are lightly browned.

Drain on paper and sprinkle with powder sugar when cool. Enjoy!

Consider making some for our next bake sale.
