-Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) is a light phenomenom taking place in the sky in the Arctic and Antarctic regions on clear, dark nights. -Finnish callingword Revontulet means literally foxfires. -Northern Lights typically form at a height of 100 kilometers. -Northern Lights perform usually greenish-yellow and occasionally reddish. Appearance of Aurora in produced by the oxygen in the atmosphere, whereas the blue and violet light due to nitrogen.
Northern Lights are the reason of sun. Light shows itself when charged particles, protons and electrons, carried by solar winds hit the upper parts of the Earths atmosphere. Esa Turunen, a doctor of Philosophy from Sodankyl, has been researching the Northern Lights in Lapland. He says that the Northern Lights appear in our sky about 200 nights per year, unfortunately the sky is not always clear and they can`t be seen trought cloud cover. On average there are approximately 2 bright clear nights per week.
Northern Lights are seen normally over the Arctic Circle. So theres a lot of Aurora Borealis research centers in Lapland. In Sodankyl theres a important researchpoint too, Thtel.
The Northern Lights are seen mostly in February - March and September - October. Theyre most rarely seen in summer and at the Christmas-time. In summer its impossible to see Northern Lights because of the summer`s midnight sun in Lapland.
