  • INTRODUCTION - Artist Statement.

It all started back in 2004, the year I moved into my first studio, swappingthe spare bedroom chaos for a large space that seemed at the time quiteoverwhelming. I guess you could say thats when I first became aprofessional artist. That winter I was really developing my own style and my awareness ofthe local surrounding landscape was heightened. I began makingsketches from elevated windows on the fourth floor of the old cotton millwhere I now took residency; this also happened to be the same views ofmy childhood home and school.Suddenly I was thrown into a semi nostalgic trip down memory lane;visions of journeys to and from school, andplaying out with friends until dusk arrived. I canremember the mills that were still in fullproduction, wondering if that was to be my fateas I left the cosy world of high school education. As I rambled through my not too distantmemories, I could see dinner being preparedthrough dimly lit, steamed up kitchen windows.I noticed the back alleys of terraced housesbecame a glow under orange light, illuminatingwheelie bins, and bizarrely the ugly skip at theend of the drive had now been transformed intoa beacon of beauty as it bathed in sodium glory.

Originally, the first four paintings were part of another series calledStreets & Houses and sold within just minutes of my first open day. Ithen began to look closer at the subject and became fascinated with thismagic hour in winter that was not quite day and not quite night. It waslike a beautiful chemistry of the natural and the man-made, drenched inartificial light.
