There are many lamptypes available which all have their unique features and benefits and characteristic areas of application. An understanding and appreciation of what lamptype is fit for purpose is required whenmaking this selection.

The considered fusion of lamp properties is essential to ensure that the lighting meets all criteria from visual composition to

FusedGlassFused glass refers to pieces of glass thathave been fired and consequently fusedin a kiln at a high temperature forapproximately 12 hours. Our highlyskilled craftsmen have been producingfused glass products for many years,satisfying a wide range of customerrequirements for shaped and colouredglasswork. Stunning effects can becreated when the glass is illuminated aspart of a light fitting.

Case Study ...Client: JMDA AssociatesProject: ChaoBaby, Meadowhall

Laser-cut steel and acrylic, high brightnessLED and hand-laminated real wood veneerare brought together with design flair, engineering skill and attention to detail.This creates a fitting which looks impressive alone, but when hung ingroups at different heights (18 used atChaoBaby - Meadowhall Shopping Mall)the result is stunning.

Developed and designed with JMDA - the brief was to develop a product basedon a Thai symbol which would both illuminate and add an additional visual dimension to the height of the restaurant.As the restaurant is situated in the largefood court at Meadowhall it was essentialto keep the customers’ attention focusedwithin the restaurant and remove externaldistractions.


As well as the visual aspect of the design,the technical details also have to be considered; installation and maintenanceneed to be kept to a minimum. The choice of longlife LED flex, integratedtransformers mounted on removable internal gear trays and a ‘plug and play’mains connection ensures fast installationwhich is almost maintenance-free. Ceilingplates, mains feed wiring and suspensionwires were supplied in advance to allowthe electrical contractor to first fix andsave further time on installation.

Case Study ...Working with K.D. Paine & Associates,Northern Lights helped transform an old ArtDeco Cinema into a popular pub, payinghomage to its original style with new ArtDeco feature pendants. J.D.Wetherspoon's‘Peter Cushing’ in Whitstable opened in August 2011 with the entire decorativelighting scheme manufactured by NorthernLights.

Situated in the main entrance area, thissquare Art Deco pendant perfectly fits itselegant surroundings.

The Art Deco theme is continued in themain bar. The versatile and accurate properties of the laser cutting process allowed our designers to convert master images of the carpet pattern to sketch entities using our 3D computer software,SolidWorks. The profiles were then cut tocreate the basis of the three hexagonal feature pendants and the lights above thebar, thereby enabling the strong theme tobe maintained throughout the interior.

All light fittings were designed to order, constructed and finished at our factory inChesterfield.

Case Study ...Our diverse range of contract lighting nowadorns one of the biggest Hindu Temples inthe Midlands. The BAPS Shri SwaminarayanMandir opened in Leicester on 9 October2011. Working with Heterarchy, the interiordesigners who are also based in Leicester,we supplied 21 Lotus Flower pendants,each 2m in diameter and these were to feature in the main hall within the building.

The fittings were constructed from laser-cutpanels finished in a striking red gloss powder coat. The petals were assembled ina series of tiers to form the Lotus Flowerstructure. The illumination was provided bya series of dimmable mains voltage LEDlamps. Not only did the lamps provide awarm glow to the fitting as a whole, butalso offered an energy efficient solution -the total energy consumption of each fittingbeing a mere 45 watts.

Versatility is a key factor in our success. We do not limit ourselves to commonprocesses or materials, which offers our customers complete creative freedom. We will endeavour to realise our customers’concepts however unconventional or radical and we will work closely with the design originator to ensure that what wemanufacture reflects and retains their intent.

ara design were appointed as interior designer and space planner for Hilton Bakufor which they designed a series of uniquebespoke lighting products.

From the initial design sketches it wasclear that what was required was a largependant with an organic feel.The first stagewas to get the basic shape of the pendant to work within the space. The second challenge was how to create this and makeit look random and organic without it losingits structural integrity.

This all day dining pendant is a large sculptural basket form, which is entwinedwith custom-made aluminium wire with abronze applied finish and individual facetedcrystals. Each supporting arm is handshaped and retained with a series of concentric bracing rings. It became known as the bird’s nest pendant.


In terms of epic design and installationjobs, they don't come much bigger thanThe Hilton, Baku. Harry Gregory of ara design, London approached us with the following brief....

"What we have is a 12 metre diameteratrium running from the lobby to the top of the building - a distance of 68 metres.What I want, is a large fitting in the centreof this space which has to look light andairy and terminate about 7 metres abovethe lobby floor. It needs to be about 5m diameter."

Our designers frantically set to work. This installation provided three individualproblems. Firstly how would we create themain body of the fitting from which theglass crystal would be suspended? Secondly, how would we suspend the fitting safely? And lastly, how would we install it, specifically the glass? It waseventually decided that we would use crystal shapes suspended from a plate and that the fitting needed to be 7.5mfrom top to bottom. A tall order in moreways than one!

Three major problems tackled by our threedesigners resulted in this breathtaking design that we're confident fully met thebrief. One designer worked on the suspension, another on the suspensionplate, and the third on the glass arrangement.

Two site visits to Baku to liaise with themain contractor and a visit to our Chineseglass factory ensured that the installationwent smoothly and professionally, provingthat no bespoke job is too big or too complex for Northern Lights!

This tapered offset doughnut pendant isconstructed entirely from a plasticfabrication. This removes the need fortime-consuming metalwork which cansometimes create unsightly shadowswhen illuminated. This obviously allowsus to provide a better value and qualityfitting which is also lighter and can beinstalled more easily.

The Finish...

The majority of our fabric shades are finished in the finest IndianDouppion Silk or the highest quality cotton. Our range includesmost colours, the majority of which are readily available.

We can produce fabric shades in many materials -from cloths, wool, yarns to parchment,vinyl PVC and even wallpaper!.

Most of these materials come in standardcolour ranges and can even be speciallyprinted to suit a specific colour or imagethat you need to match.

Fabrics

Our in-house finishing department has the facility to both‘wet spray’ and powder coat. We can spray to almost anycolour specified. Using the RAL colour paint matching schemewe can meet your specific colour requirements. RAL colourcodes are a four digit number that gives a specific value toeach of the base colours that make up a specific shade. Forinstance RAL 3020 is known as ‘traffic red’ and RAL 6001 isknown as ‘emerald green’.

If you wish to know more about RAL colours, swatch books orchips can be purchased from www.ralcolour.co.uk. There isalso an online guide at www.ralcolor.com but this is notrecommended for ‘absolute colour matching’. Monitorsettings can slightly alter the colour you see on screen fromthat which is mixed. RAL colours are available in both ‘wetspray’ and powder coat forms. We will also use the RALscheme to match as closely as possible to any colour sampleyou may wish to use.

Paint Finishes


Our highly skilled manufacturing staff can produce lightfittings from virtually any type of metal. Of coursestructural integrity and cost can affect this, but then wecan ‘finish’ metals in many different ways to suit theapplication.

Our finishes range from a simple colour spray or powdercoat in any RAL colour you desire to more complexvariations such as a patinated or verdigris finish.

All these finishes, apart from specialist chrome plating aredone in-house using specialist equipment. This ensuresthat the desired finish is achieved every time. It alsomeans that there is no delay in meeting deadlines waitingfor external finishing suppliers.

Metal Finishes

Our glass and crystal products can either be speciallymanufactured or sprayed to match most colours. Specialcolours however do increase lead times.

We can also offer other finishes to clear glass such assandblasting, frosting and etching.

Fused glass pieces come in a more limited colour range -this range can be seen at www.system96.com.

Glass & Crystal

All of our veneers are applied by hand to ensure the bestpossible quality finish. The veneer can then be stained toclosely match the wood finish you require. This can rangefrom a light oak to a dark wenge wood finish.

Please note, however, that extreme heatand humidity can affect the glues used soconsideration needs to be given to theplacement of the veneer
