PERSPECTIVES

Participate in national environmentalsanitation movements

It is essential for every human being to enjoygood health and longevity. Only strong and healthycitizens can participate in building up a modern, developed nation with physical and mentalstrengths.

The Health Ministry is scaling up healthcare services for the health and longevity of thepeople. Like treatment, prevention is importantfor providing health care. As the environment isdirectly related to public health, environmentalsanitation movements are being launched on anational scale. The four cleans — adequatesupply of clean water, systemic dumping of wastematerials, hygienic foods and clean hands — are atthe core of the movements. Worldwide, more thanone million people, mostly children, die of diarrheaa year. To help reduce and eradicate such diseases, all people must know the four cleans.

Myanmar has been carrying out nationalenvironmental sanitation week movements since1998 by adopting various mottos such as ‘Let’sbuild fly-proof latrines’; ‘Let’s use clean toilets forlife-long good health’; ‘Wash the hands after goingto toilets’; ‘Only clean water ensures good health’;and ‘Keeping clean hands is the beginning of goodhealth’. The public cooperation has contributed alot to the healthy environment.

Health care services are concerned with theentire national people who need not only to takepart in national environmental sanitationmovements but also to follow the health rules.Particularly, they are to focus on clean foods, cleanwater, personal hygiene (clean hands) and cleanenvironment (clean toilets). The Health Ministryis giving health education to all regions from urbanto rural areas. It is trying to get the people to havegood knowledge of health. All the people on theirpart are to carry out ‘four cleans’ tasks in accordwith the mottos of national environmentalsanitation movements so that they can enjoy goodhealth and longevity.

Minorities have higherkidney disease risk

SAN FRANCISCO, 13 March—Young, minority, USadults are afflicted in greater numbers with chronickidney diseases, a researcher says.

Dr Andy Choi of the University of California, SanFrancisco, suggests the burden and progression of thisdisease needs to been assessed in this vulnerable popu-lation.

“Minorities in the United States are two to four timesmore likely than non-minorities to progress to end-stage renal disease,” Choi said in a statement. “Thatrepresents a significant disparity that warrants greaterstudy about the causes, consequences and preventivemeasures appropriate for people in this demographic.”

Choi is co-author of a study, published online in theClinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrol-ogy, that examined data from 15,353 adults with non-dialysis dependent chronic kidney disease — stages3-5 — receiving regular ambulatory care in the Com-munity Health Network of San Francisco. The patientswere tracked for a period of 12 months to 9.4 years.

Papaya leaf thwarts growth of cancer cellsGAINESVILLE, 13

March—US and Japa-nese researchers say pa-paya leaf extract has hadan anti-cancer effect inlaboratory tests.

Dr Nam Dang of theUniversity of Florida andcolleagues in Japan say“tea” made from the driedleaves of the papaya plantfights lab-grown tumours— including cancers ofthe cervix, breast, liver, lung and pancreas.

Their newest study, published in the Journal

of Ethnopharmacology, found papaya leaf extractalso boosts the productionof key signaling mol-ecules — Th1-typecytokines — that regulatethe immune system.

The findings suggestpossible therapeutic usesnot only against cancerbut as an anti-inflamma-tory, Dang said.

“Based on what I haveseen and heard in a clini-cal setting, nobody whotakes this extract experi-ences demonstrable toxic-

ity; it seems like youcould take it for a longtime — as long as it is ef-fective,” Dang says in astatement.

Dang points out theplant has long been usedmedicinally in his nativeViet Nam and amongAustralian indigenouspopulations.

WASHINGTON, 13March —By studying thehydra, a member of anancient group of sea crea-tures that is still flourish-ing, scientists at Univer-sity of California, SantaBarbara (UCSB) havemade a discovery in un-derstanding the origins ofhuman vision, the univer-sity said in a Press release. The finding was pub-lished in this week’s issueof the Proceedings of theRoyal Society B, a Britishjournal of biology.

Hydra are simple ani-mals that, along withjeSanllyfish, belong to thephylum cnidaria.Cnidarians first emerged600 million years ago.

“We determined whichgenetic ‘gateway,’ or ionchannel, in the hydra isinvolved in light sensitiv-ity,” said senior authorTodd H Oakley, assistantprofessor in UCSB’s De-partment of Ecology,Evolution and Marine Bi-ology. “This is the samegateway that is used in hu-man vision.”

WASHINGTON, 13March —Researchers atthe University of Minne-sota in the United Stateshave created a molecularimage of a system thatmoves electrons betweenproteins in cells, accord-ing to a news release fromthe university.

The achievement isbelieved to be a break-through for biology andcould provide insights tominimize energy loss inother systems, fromnanoscale devices tomoving electricity aroundthe country.

The research, led byCarrie Wilmot, an associ-ate professor in the Col-lege of Biological Sci-

ences, is published inthe March 12 issue ofScience.

“Evolution has beenfine-tuning electricity inorganisms for a lot longerthan humans have beenusing it,” Wilmot says.“We can learn a lot fromnature about how to useit more efficiently. Thisnew glimpse at how thebody uses electricitycould lead tonanotechnology to shrinkelectronic circuitry evenfurther or a more efficientgrid to provide power tohomes and businesses.”

Energy generated byintracellular movement ofelectrons is the fundamen-tal power source that ena-bles humans to exist. Aselectrons move withincells, energy is channeledto create complex mol-ecules, such as proteinand DNA. These are thebuilding materials thatenable organisms to grow, maintain themselves, andstore energy. Tea is mostly grown in Shan and Chin States.Concerning tea farming, we have a saying whichgoes “Once you grow tea, it will benefit till posterity.”

Tea culture exists in Myanmar since timeimmemorial. Pickled tea, dry tea and processed teaare made from virgin tea leaf alone.

Dry tea and processed tea are made fromfreshly picked tea leaves. But pickled tea can beobtained after being placed in the pit for severalmonths.Local tea market and demand are growingday by day due to the rise in tea consumption. So, itis necessary to grow marketable tea on a commercialscale.

Therefore, hilly regions in eastern Nay PyiTaw Pyinmana have been designated as a tea growingland in order that the Nay Pyi Taw will become a teaproducing and growing area.

We, Myanma Alin news crew, went to(See page 9) Tea nursery in Mepauk Village, hilly region of Nay Pyi Taw Pyinmana.
