More inter-district roads builtfor all-weather transport

The government is fulfilling the requirementsfor the development of the whole Union. Moreover, plans are being made to ensure speedy developmentof the regions with poor transport.

Now, new motor roads, railroads and smalland large bridges spanning creeks and rivers havebeen built all over the country. With regionalsmooth transport, people’s socio-economy,education and health have improved.

Back in 1988, there were only over 5,000 milesof rural and urban roads. But now, there havebeen more than 6,000 miles of urban roads and30,000 miles of rural roads, enabling the people tohave access to all parts of the country.

Inter-district Road No.2 in Mandalay Division, built by the Ministry for Progress of Border Areasand National Races and Development Affairs, wasopened on 21 March. The road is over 100 mileslong from the Kintha junction in Nay Pyi TawTatkon Township to Phyaukseikpin village inKyaukse Township. With the advent of the road,63 villages in 11 townships of Mandalay Divisionhave enjoyed smooth transport.

Similarly, Inter-district Road No.3 in SagaingDivision was put into service on 21 March. The 35-mile gravel road has enabled the people of over 90villages to travel in all seasons. Besides, plans areunder way to extend the road to 300 miles fromSagaing to Myitkyina, Kachin State. Inter-districtRoad No.2 in Mon State was upgraded into the 30-mile tarred one from Mottamakywechan village inPaung Township to Zaymathwe village in ThatonTownship. And it was opened on 23 March for theconvenience of 35 villages.

As networks of motor roads and railroadshave been built the length and breadth of thenation, all the regions have enjoyed prosperitywith smooth transport and speedy commodityflow.

B EIJING, 29 March—High-calorie foods maybe addictive as cocaineor nicotine, accordingto a study published inthe journal NatureNeuroscience Sunday.

Paul J. Kenny,Ph.D., the lead author ofthe study, said that doingdrugs such as cocaineand eating too muchjunk food bothgradually overload theso-called pleasurecenters in the brain.

Eventually thepleasure centers “crash”,and achieving the samepleasure — or even justfeeling normal —requires increasingamounts of the drug orfood, said Kenny.

Researchers studiedthree groups of lab ratsfor 40 days. The firstgroup was fed normal ratfood. The second groupwas allowed to gorge onsweets and junk food forone hour a day. The thirdwas allowed unlimitedamounts of junk foodfor 23 hours of the day.

The third groupbegan to eatcompulsively. Whenresearchers applied anelectric shock in thepresence of food, thefirst two groups shiedaway from eating, whilethe third groupcontinued eating.

Obesity may be aform of compulsiveeating. The findings ina study of animalscannot be directlyapplied to humanobesity, but may help inunderstanding thecondition and indeveloping therapies totreat it, according to theresearchers.

TEL AVIV, 29 March— Giving tomatobreeders and ketchup fans something to cheerabout, a Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL)scientist and his colleagues at the HebrewUniversity in Israel have identified a gene thatpushes hybrid tomato plants to spectacularlyincrease yield. The yield-boosting power of thisgene, which controls when plants make flowers, works in different varieties of tomato, and crucially, across a range of environmental conditions.

“This discovery has potential to have asignificant impact on both the billion-dollar tomatoindustry, as well as agricultural practices designed toget the most yield from other flowering crops,” saysCSHL’s Zach Lippman, Ph.D., one of the three authors
