PERSPECTIVES

Endeavour for establishment ofindustrial nation

2 THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Monday, 30 November, 2009

Industrial sector is instrumental inbringing about national development. SoMyanmar is building sound infrastructuresto build up an industrialized country. Import-substitute industries are mushrooming as theState has extended building industrial regionsand zones and factories.

With the State being able to establishmore heavy industries, percentage of theindustrial sector in the nation’s GDP hasincreased year by year. Establishment of moreindustries and factories has not onlycontributed to regional development but alsocreated job opportunities for local people.

New production techniques have beenacquired as encouragement is being given todevelop the private industrial sector whilepromoting operation capacity of State-runfactories. Moreover, use of modern machineryand tools has facilitated in gaining technologyand work experiences.

Ministry of Industry-1 is runningfactories manufacturing consumer andhousehold goods. Textile factories, pharmaceutical factories, paper and pulpmills, high heat-duty fire brick factories, steelhousehold goods factories, plastic factoriesand consumer goods factories are nowoperating in full swing for manufacturing awide range of products.

For balanced development of industrialzones and regions, local and internationalstudy of boosting productivity and continuousresearch on quality control are necessary.

There has been improved productivitydue to the establishment of a great number offactories in industrial zones and regions. Sothe industrial sector will develop more bymanufacturing high quality goods while tryingfor each and every factory to operate at fullcapacity with proper proportion in cost andincome.

Raul Castro praises Cubanarmy as well prepared

HAVANA, 29 Nov — Raul Castro toured military in-stallations and met with his armed forces high com-mand during three days of extensive war games, say-ing his forces’ preparedness inspires more respect thanpossession of an advanced weapon ever could.

The military exercises, which were wrapping upSaturday ahead of Cuba’s National Defence Day onSunday, involve hundreds of thousands of people —both uniformed and civilian — and are the largest since2004.

Cuban military leaders say they must guard againstan American attack, despite assurances from Wash-ington that such talk is absurd and the fact that rela-tions have been improving, albeit slowly, since Presi-dent Barack Obama took office.

BASE SHANK(Afghanistan),29 Nov — Veterans of Iraqrecall rolling to war alongasphalted highways, swel-tering in flat scrublandsand chatting with city-wise university graduatesconnected to the widerworld.

Now fighting in Af-ghanistan, US soldiers in-variably encounter illiter-ate farmers who maynever have talked to anAmerican as they slog intoremote villages on dirt

tracks through bitterlycold, snow-streakedmountains.

“Before deploying herewe were given training onlanguage, culture, every-thing. I thought that sinceI was an Iraq combat vet-eran, I didn’t need any ofthat stuff. I was wrong,”says Sgt Michael McCann, returning from a patrol inthe east-central provinceof Logar.

While their experiencesin the two war zones vary, for many soldiers in the

field — if not policy mak-ers — the conflict in Af-ghanistan is one they thinkmay prove harder andlonger to win.

Soldiers and officersinvolved in combat opera-tions all cite the more pun-ishing geography and cli-mate, those focused on de-velopment the bare-bonesinfrastructure, and intelli-gence specialists the evengreater difficulties in iden-tifying the militants asamong the many sharpcontrasts between Af-ghanistan and Iraq.

Nissan to double electriccar power

TOKYO, 29 Nov—Japan’s Nissan Motor Co is work-ing on a lithium-ion battery that can power an electricvehicle for 300 kilometres (190 miles) on a singlecharge, the business daily Nikkei said on Sunday.

The distance is nearly double the 160-kilometrerange of the Leaf, Nissan’s first all-electric car set togo on sale in late 2010 in Japan, the United States andEurope.

Nissan, Japan’s third largest automaker, aims to pro-duce electric cars incorporating the new battery by2015, according to Nikkei.

Nissan plans to boost the capacity of the lithium-ion battery’s positive electrode by adding nickel andcobalt to its main material, manganese, it said.

The enhanced battery can store about twice as muchelectricity as batteries with positive electrodes madeonly from manganese.

It is robust enough for practical use, able to with-stand about 1,000 charge cycles, the daily said.

relic of a dwarf galaxy that merged withthe Milky Way during its early days, scientists now find.

Called Terzan 5, the globular starcluster lies within the Milky Way’scentral bulge of stars that protrudes upand down from the galaxy’s flatteneddisk. A globular cluster can host a col-lection of 10,000 to 1 million-plusstars bound together by gravity.

The traditional view of the 150 orso clusters in our galaxy has been thatthe stars of each one, typically ancientin cosmic terms, were born at aboutthe same time from one cloud of gasand dust.

Psychotherapy can boosthappiness more than money

Psychological therapy may be muchmore effective at making people happythan getting a raise or winning a lotteryprize, suggests an English study.

Researchers analyzed data on thou-sands of people who provided informa-tion about their mental well-being andfound that the increase in happiness froma $1,329 course of therapy was so sig-nificant that it would take a pay raise ofmore than $41,542 to achieve an equalboost in well-being.

That suggests that therapy could beas much as 32 times more cost-effectiveat improving well-being than simply get-ting more money, the researchers said.

ABOARD XUELONG, 29Nov— A Chinese scien-tist said China plans tobuild a remote-sensingsatellite receiving stationin Antarctica to bettermonitor the global oceanenvironment.

Jiang Xingwei, directorof China’s National Satel-lite Ocean ApplicationService, who is travelingwith the Xuelong ice-

Jiang said the receivingstation will mainly re-ceive information sent outby ocean satellites, andacquire updates on oceanwater colour, ocean dy-namic environment and

the polar region environ-ment.

The station has greatsignificance as over 70percent of the earth’s sur-face is covered by ocean,he added.

Currently, China hasfour ocean satellite re-ceiving stations, whichare located in Beijing,Sanya in southern Hainanprovince, Mudanjiang innortheastern HeilongjiangProvince and Hangzhouin northern ZhejiangProvince. —Xinhua

KANSAS CITY, 29 Nov—The growth of cellphones with global-posi-tioning technology ismaking life uncertain forthe makers of personalnavigational devices thathelp drivers figure outwhere they are and where

to go. Manufacturers ofstandalone GPS productswill have to move quicklyand smartly to transformtheir dumb map readersinto intelligent devicesthat can provide a host ofservices such as trafficavoidance.

Otherwise, they riskobsolescence in a future inwhich customers viewnavigation as simply onemore application for theirphones. Some of thenewer apps alreadyclosely match what basic,d a s h b o a r d - m o u n t e dgadgets can do.

“You have to redefinethe category somewhat, like what Apple did withthe iPod Touch,” saidRoss Rubin, technologyanalyst for research firmThe NPD Group. “Thatturned it from somethingthat was just a mediaplayer into something thataccessed the Web.”

NEW YORK, 29 Nov—With the help of their doc-tors, women planning tobecome pregnant shouldtake an inventory of themedications they take, re-searchers from Canadaadvise.

In a study, they foundthat many pregnantwomen still take medica-tions long known to causebirth defects.

Some medications withknown fetal risk, such asdrugs that control epi-lepsy, are essential duringpregnancy, Dr AnickBerard, at the Universityof Montreal in Quebec,

noted in an email corre-spondence to ReutersHealth.

Other medications, suchas those that treat severeacne, anxiety and psychi-atric drugs, antibiotics, andmany drugs prescribed forheart disease and medicalconditions, “can andshould be avoided,” ac-cording to Berard. Womenshould understand the sideeffects of any drug they aretaking — especially drugstreating a chronic condi-tion — and plan pregnan-cies to avoid or minimizerisks such drugs pose tobabies, Berard added.

For the 5 years betweenJanuary 1998 and the lastday of 2002, Berard andcolleagues analyzed theprescriptions filled bypregnant women for drugsavailable at the time andknown to pose fetal risks.

NEWYORK, 29 Nov—People who work in de-tergent factories are at in-creased risk of develop-ing respiratory problems, including asthma, pro-bably from exposure tochemicals contained indetergent, two new stud-ies hint.

But a spokesman forthe detergent industry ar-gues that the findingsfrom these studies don’tapply to the US and Eu-ropean detergent indus-tries at large. “Over theyears, the detergent in-dustry has developed suc-cessful product steward-ship programmes to pro-mote the safe use of en-zymes, using appropriaterisk assessment and riskmanagement strategies toavoid unacceptable risksin the workplace,” Rich-ard Sedlak, vice presidentof technical and internalaffairs for The Soap andDetergent Association

(SDA), said in a preparedstatement.

While the author of oneof the new studies agreesthat the industry overallhas done a good job pro-tecting workers, he saidregulatory agencies’ cur-rent exposure standardsare too high.

Exposure to chemicalsfound in powdered deter-gent was first recognizedin 1969 to cause job-re-lated asthma. Since then, the industry has intro-duced measures for limit-ing workers’ exposure, al-though outbreaks of occu-pational asthma still oc-cur.—Internet
