Kinpuntaung for-est reserve was estab-lished as the specific teakplantation in Taung-dwingyi Township.

Neem and teakplantations were estab-lished at Block No. 32 ofKinpuntaung forest re-serve, 1,000 acres of East-ern gooseberry, Mezali(Cassia siamea) and oth-ers in Yanpei Dam(Hsinkya Village) and1,000 acres of tree plan-tation in Kinpuntaung for-est reserve.

A total of 6250acres of plantations wasset up at Gyochaung andKinpuntaung forest re-serves through the hy-bridization system. In ad-

awgyi Village. Moreover,18 acres of village fuelwood forests were plantedat Thebyu Village and 100acres in ThabyebinVillage.

It is important togrow the value-addednatural forests in the for-estry task. Teak planta-tions were set up atYanpei and Kinpuntaungforest reserves inTaungdwingyi Town-ship. So far, a total of6450 acres of teak plan-tation has been estab-lished there.

As the mass activi-ties, over 1,060,000 sap-lings, namely neem,Mezali (Cassia siamea),Eucalyptus saplings wereplanted in TaungdwingyiTownship.

After that, the plan-tations were designatedas the good natural teak

plantations and the seedsproduction area was des-ignated. With the aim ofprotecting trees and for-ests, a total of 3930 fuelwood substitute paddyhusk stoves were distrib-uted to the villages. Moreover, briquetteswere also distributed tothe local people.

Together with For-ester U Moe Aung, we leftfor Myothit Township ofMagway District and ob-served the natural forestregion. We visited 11,195acres of natural forest areaand saw the thriving vari-ous plants.

On arrival at Satonforest reserve, we wit-nessed the conservation ofnatural forests. We viewedironwood, Htaukkyant(Terminalia tomentosa),cutch, Eastern gooseberry,Thitya (Shorea obtuse), sal

and other kinds of trees.Myothit Township hastropical forests. Most ofthe tree species thrivingin the township are East-ern gooseberry and cutchplants. The greeningtasks of Bago mountainrange in Magway Dis-trict are being undertakenin Taungdwingyi,Myothit and Natmauktownships.

Obama says US economy likely to

contract in second quarter WASHINGTON, 31 July — US

President Barack Obama said on

Thursday that he expects US economy

will continue to shrink during the second

quarter.

“I suspect that GDP numbers will

still show that the economy contracted

in the second quarter, that job loss is still

a huge problem,” Obama told reporters

after meeting with Philippines President

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. The

Commerce Depart-ment will report the

GDP data of the second quarter on Friday.

According to the department, the

US economy fell at an annual rate of 5.5

percent in the first quarter, the third

straight quarterly decline, followed

decreases of 6.3 percent in the final

quarter of 2008 and 0.5 percent in the

third quarter of last year.

“We have seen a significant slowing

down of the contraction over the last

several months,” Obama said, noting

that there are no longer fears of another

Great Depression.

“All of that is a sign that we have

stepped away from the precipice,” he

said. “We were in a position where we

could have gone into a great depression.

I think those fears have abated.” —Internet

Researchers usenanoparticle-delivered genesto slow ovarian tumor growth

CHICAGO, 31 July —Tiny particles carrying akiller gene can effectivelysuppress ovarian tumorgrowth in mice, said USresearchers.

The findings, reportedThursday in the journalCancer Research, couldlead to a new treatmentfor ovarian cancer, according to researchersfrom MassachusettsInstitute of Technology.

They deliver a genethat encodes the

diphtheria toxin, whichkills cells by disruptingtheir ability tomanufacture proteins.

The “killer gene” isengineered to be over-expressed in ovarian cellsbut is inactive in other celltypes. So it can selectivelytarget the varian tumors andslow its growth in mice.

Human clinical trialscould start, after someadditional preclinicalstudies, in about a year ortwo, says Daniel

Mosquito bites carry keyvaccine for malaria

BEIJING, 31 July — In a daring experiment inEurope, scientists used mosquitoes as flying needlesto deliver a “vaccine” of live malaria parasites via theirbites. The results were astounding: Everyone in thevaccine group acquired immunity to malaria; everyonein a non-vaccinated group did not, and developedmalaria when exposed to the parasites later.

The study was only a small proof-of-principletest, and its approach is not practical on a large scale. However, it shows that scientists may finally be on theright track to developing an effective vaccine againstone of mankind’s top killers. A vaccine that usesmodified live parasites just entered human testing.

“Malaria vaccines are moving from thelaboratory into the real world,” Dr Carlos Campbellwrote in an editorial accompanying the study inyesterday’s New England Journal of Medicine.

He works for PATH, the Program for AppropriateTechnology in Health, a Seattle-based global healthfoundation.

Malaria kills nearly a million people each year, mostly children under five and especially in Africa.Infected mosquitoes inject immature malaria parasitesinto the skin when they bite; these travel to the liverwhere they mature and multiply. — Internet

That allowedFerguson to get the bestout of Ronaldo, whilekeeping a soliddefensive base, and thePortugal wingerresponded with over 60goals in the last twoseasons.

But after Ronaldo’sworld record 80 millionpounds sale, Fergusonwants more goals fromall his players and hehas been experimentingwith differentcombinations inmidfield and attack.

In an interview inInside United, posted onmanutd.com, Fergusonsaid: “ObviouslyCristiano is a big loss interms of the goals hegave us.

“But we will justhave to find the goalsfrom somewhere elseand our tactics will adjustaccordingly. Fans willsee us playing a slightlydifferent style of footballthis season.”

Ferguson hasalready used WayneRooney more as a centralstriker, rather thanplaying him out wide ashe did last season.

“Usually you lookto score about 100 goalsin all competitions, sowe are aiming for thatagain,” Ferguson said.“If we are going to winthe league again or dowell in Europe wecertainly need players tostep up.
