Today is the Fullmoon Day of Thadingyutor the Abhidhamma Day, a day of religioussignificance for Buddhists all over the world, marking the end of Buddhist Lent. To mark thereturn of the Buddha from the Tavatimsa to thehuman abode in the evening on the FullmoonDay of Thadingyut, Buddhists in Myanmar offermulti-coloured lights to Him.

After attaining seven vasas, the Buddhaascended the celestial abode Tavatimsa with theaim of repaying the gratitude to celestial beingSantusita, His mother in the previous existence,by means of preaching the Abhidhamma forthree months.

His preaching the Abhidhammacomprising Kusaladhamma, Akusaladhammaand Abyakatadhamma for all the celestial beingsbegan on the Fullmoon Day of Waso andcompleted on the Fullmoon Day of Thadingyut.

The Abhidhamma is of great significanceand subtleness. It can simply get rid of worry andanxiety and lead one to live a peaceful and happylife.

As it is the day of religious significance,Buddhists recite the Abhidhamma verse capableof getting rid of greed, anger, delusion anddefilements. They also do meritorious deeds suchas offering lights, flowers, water and joss sticks, practising meditation, listening the Dhamma andkeeping Sabbath at pagodas and monasteriesthroughout the nation in order to find the correctway to Nibbana, eternal peace and happiness.

Reflecting the attributes of the Buddhaand reciting the Abhidhamma on the FullmoonDay of Thadingyut, all the Buddhists will be ableto attain the noble stage of Nibbana.

SAN FRANCISCO, 2 Oct— IBM Corp is trying to sty-mie Google Inc’s expansion into the business softwaremarket. The weapon: a bare-bones e-mail service thatIBM is selling to companies for $36 annually perworker, undercutting a more comprehensive packageof software applications that Google sells for $50 peruser annually.

For that slightly higher price, Google is offering25 times more storage: 25 gigabytes per account com-pared to IBM’s 1 gigabyte per mailbox. Google alsothrows in word processing, spreadsheet and presenta-tion applications, as well as a video channel. None ofthose features are included in IBM’s package.

Even so, IBM believes its service, called LotusLiveiNotes, can beat Google because it has a much largersales force and relationships with corporate custom-ers going back long before Google co-founders LarryPage and Sergey Brin were even born in 1973.“Thisis trouble for Google,” said Gartner Inc analyst Mat-thew Cain.

WASHINGTON , 2 Oct —The big three US car firmsall saw their sales fall in September, as they suffered ahangover from the end of the “cash for clunkers” scrap-page scheme. General Motors reported the biggest de-cline, with its sales dropping 45% from a year earlier, while Chrysler’s fell 45%, and Ford’s slipped 5%.

The falls came after the scrappage scheme endedon 24 August. This gave customers a cash incentiveto trade in their old cars for new ones, lifting US salesin July and August. The $3bn (£1.8bn) Car Allow-ance Rebate System offered customers $3,500 towardsthe cost of a new vehicle. A similar scheme is con-tinuing in the UK. Ford’s decline in sales was muchless severe than its rivals, as it was helped by the popu-larity of its newly launched Taurus model. Japanesefirms also saw their US sales fall in September, withToyota’s down 13% and Nissan’s falling 7%. SouthKorea’s Hyundai bucked the trend, with its sales forthe month adding 27%.—Internet

South African law recognizes tradi-tional polygamous marriages — evenPresident Jacob Zuma has three wives.Yet while polygamy remains commonamong several tribes including the Zu-lus and Swazis, simultaneous weddingsare rare.

Chris Schauerman of Honeoye Fallssaid he noticed one of his chickens ap-peared ill one day last week and died laterthat night after laying the massive object, which is 2 1/2 times the size of an aver-age egg, CNN reported on Monday.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” Schauer-man said. “You open up the chicken coop, and sitting inside the nest with five othereggs is just this behemoth.” “We kind ofrelated it to a woman having a 25-poundbaby, if you do the math,” Schauermansaid. “I’m pretty sure that’s what even-tually led to the death of the chicken.”

A 5-year-old pet dog rescued itsmaster, a 70-year-old woman, after shesuffered a major heart attack in herhome.

The dog, kept by a family in Anshan,Liaoning province, heard the sound ofheavy breathing from the grandmoth-er’s room one night and hurried to heraide where she was seen with her handsover her chest , sweating profusely butunable to speak a word.

The dog then ran throughout thehouse, barking loudly at other familymembers and scratching at doors untilsomeone woke up and administered thegrandmother medicine. Had it not beenfor the dog, she would not have sur-vived, a doctor said later.

Dinosaur eggs are found in Indiadinosaur eggs.

Each egg is the size ofa football — about 13 to23cm in diameter, lyingburied in sandy nests.

The leader of the team,MU Ramkumar, told theBBC the finding is signifi-cant and could help to un-ravel the mystery aboutthe extinction of dino-saurs.

Scientists believe theeggs belong to the docileleaf-eating Sauropodbranch of dinosaurs.

Their remains havebeen dug up on every con-tinent, including Antarc-tica.

Palaeontologists use

the term to describe large,four-legged, plant-eatingdinosaurs with bulky bod-ies, long necks and tailsand tiny heads with rela-tively small brains.

Humans didn’t evolve fromchimpanzee-like ancestors

The fossil, nicknamed“Ardi,” is the earliest skel-eton known from the hu-man branch of the primatefamily tree. The branchincludes Homosa-piens aswell as species closer tohumans than to chimpan-zees and bono-bos. Thediscoveries provide newinsights about howhominids — the family of“great apes” comprisinghumans, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangut-ans— may have emergedfrom an ancestral ape.

Until the discovery ofArdi, the earliest well-known stage of humanevolution was Australopi-

The most famousAustralopithecus fossil isthe 3.2-million-year-old“Lucy,” which was namedafter the Beatles song“Lucy in the Sky withDiamonds.” Lucy wasfound in 1974 about45miles north of where Ardiwould later be discovered.Ardi’s skeleton and asso-ciated Ardipithecusramidus remains are olderand more primitive thanAustralopithecus.

Myanmar Buddhist Lent ends in Thadingyut (Oc-tober) hence its literal meaning is “the end of BuddhistLent”. Buddhist monks after observing lent vows in therainy season of three months, July, August and Septem-ber, are now free to go out for overnight stay from theirresiding monasteries. This seventh month of Myanmarcalendar has also astrological name “Tula” (Libro) and itszodiacal sign is a merchant holding a balance. Lotusflower (Belumbo nucifera) which blooms plentiful in thismonth is the designated flower of the month. Lotus flowersymbolises purity, beauty and fragrance and it is thesacred flower for the Buddhists. The asterism Asawaniand the moon shine astride in the night firmament.

The fullmoon day of Thadingyut is marked“Abhidhamma Day” (1) Abhidhamma of seven Treatises(Buddhist Philosophy) (2) Sutta of three Treatises (theDiscourses) and (3) Vinaya of five treatises (the Disci-pline of rules for the monks form Tipitaka (Three Baskets(Bodies) of the Buddha’s Teachings. In the Maha Sakarityear of 109, in the evening of the fullmoon day of Waso,Lord Gotama Buddha performed the great miracle in thecity of Savalthi to subdue the sectarian opponents. Themiracle was in the form of emissions of water and fire inpairs from the apertures of Lord Buddha’s head. Themiracle took place near the white mango tree in the royalpark of King Kosala. After the performance, GotamaBuddha ascended Tavatimsa, the celestial kingdom wherehis mother Maha Maya became Santussita deva. GotamaBuddha, wishing to return his filial debt of gratitude heowed to his mother by preaching her Abhidhamma. Thushe observed his seventh lent in Tavatimsa. Sitting on thebrown emerald slab “Pandukambala” which was thethrone of Sakka Deva, shaded by Pinlai Kathit (CoralTree, Erythrina indica), Lord Buddha expounded allseven Treatises of Abhidhamma to a gathering of devas,Sakka, Brahmas including Santussita deva. His preachingsthroughout the lent period came to an end on the full moonday of Thadingyut. Therefore, the fullmoon day ofThadingyut is designated and celebrated as AbhidhammaDay by the Buddhists.

Lord Buddha told Sakka Deva that he wouldreturn to earth (human world) as he had accomplished hisDhamma duta (the mission of preaching Dhamma).Whereupon, Sakka Deva arranged a magnificent send-off. Three stairways were created—one of gold on theright side for the Devas, one of silver on the left side forthe Brahmas and one in the middle of rubies for LordBuddha to descend upon. Devas, accompanying Lord

Buddha, held celestial regalia to honour the Buddha, PancaSankha Deva on the right Veluva harps in praise of LordBuddha. Matali Deva on the left side carried flowers andfragrance to honour Lord Buddha, Suyama Deva carried aYak tail, fly whisk, Santussita Deva held a ruby studdedgold fan, Sakka Deva blew the Vizayuthara Conch shell tocelebrate the auspicious occasion. All deities in the entireuniverse also gathered to pay homage to Lord Buddha asbest as they could. The three stairways being illuminated bythe lights radiated from the devas and Brahmas led to theGateway of the city of Sanhasa on earth. When LordBuddha had set foot upon earth, the awaiting crowd withthe king and his court at the city gate paid obeissance toLord Buddha and as a token of welcome, a grand lightfestival was held.

To commemorate this great event in the life of LordBuddha which took place on the fullmoon day of Thadinkyut,Myanmar people annually celebrate Light Festival. Thisfestival is also called Tawedaintha Pwe (Tavatimsa Festi-val) or “Si Mee Myint Moe Pwe”. “Si Mee” means “lightproduced by oil lamps” and “Myint Moe” means “MtMeru” on which Tavatimsa is believed to exist. Therefore,it means “Festival of Lighting by oil lamps of Mt Meru”.Myanmar kings in all periods of Myanmar history held thisfestival at their capitals on state scale as well as throughouttheir kingdoms, on local levels. Artistic replicas of Mt Meruwith three stairways were constructed for the festival onopen grounds. Evening lights were lit on them. The eventof Lord Buddha’s descent from Tavatimsa to earth with thecompany of Devas, Sakka, Brahmas was depicted on thereplicas with images and statues. Sometimes live showswere staged. Only Lord Buddha was presented by an imageor statue. Hymns were sung and religious music played. Afree-for-all feast was given where fruits cakes, glutinousrice and soft drink or plain tea were served. At the capital,in addition to replicas of Mt Meru, on four sides of thepalace, Winkaba (Mazes) were built of bamboo for theamusement of the public. At nights, puppet shows werestaged. The king issued money, oil, cotton wickers andearthen oil containers and other accessories for lightingprominent pagodas, temples and shrines at and around thecapital.

In the countryside the light festival takes the localcharacter. Towns and villages near the rivers and lakesilluminations are made on the water. When darkness falls, people row out to the middle of water surface and light upoil lamps, put on floats made of banana stems, bamboos orreeds and let them adrift, creating a spectacular scene. The

full moon’s silvery rays passing through the foliage ofswaying trees creating black and white designs on thewater, while flickering flames of oil lamps on the floatscasting shimmering reflections on the ripples. In ShanState, especially in Pa-O villages, locally made firerockets are shot into the sky and hot-air balloons offantastic shapes and designs are let into the sky to payhomage to the Sulamani Pagoda in Tavatimsa.

Two solemn religious rites of Thadingyut are (1)Pawarana and (2) Puja. Pawarana is held at the end of theLent. Each monk by turn has to ask other monks of theresiding monastery to reprimand him for any sin he mayhave been noticed committed and he has to confess andapologize and promise not to repeat the sin. This rite takesplace in the ordination hall, on the fullmoon day ofThadingyut every year. Pawarana dates back to thelifetime of Gotama Buddha. Monks who observed theirlent at a village in Kosala kingdom agreed to keep mumduring lent because talking could cause argument anddispute which could lead to disunity and unhappinessamong them. After the lent they visited Lord Buddharesiding in Jetavann Vihara. They explained to the Bud-dha how they kept unity and happiness during lent. LordBuddha disapproved their method of maintaining unityand happiness by keeping mum as it was disrespectableto the donors and supporters of the Sangha. He recom-mended the rite of Pawarana, so that sinful monk wouldrepent and be pardoned and monks would live in har-mony, unity and happiness.

Puja is the rite performed by laymen. Pujameans worship or making a devotional offering. InBuddhism, there are Five infinite debts of gratitudeowed to (1) the Buddha (2) the Dhamma (3) theSangha (Assembly of monks) (4) Parents and (5)Teachers (regardless of their age, gender and religiousfaiths) including your bosses and seniors. The fullmoonday of Thadingyut is the occasion for Myanmar Bud-dhists to give due pujas to the above Five Categories. They visit the aged, the seniors, the teachers and truefriends to pay them reverence and respects and givethem devotional gifts. They receive from them bless-ings and words of admonition. To the minors, somepocket money may be given for their enjoyment ofThadingyut festival.

Thadingyut light festival is rejoicing and merry-making. But in essence, it is the occasion for spiritualdelight and merit-making.

YANGON, 2 Oct —Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, DawKhin Khin Win and Ma Win Ma Ma (a) Ange Lay filedappeals against the judgments at Yangon DivisionCourt as they were dissatisfied with the judgments of theCriminal Regular Trial 47/2009. These were the crimi-nal appeal cases No 173/2009 and No 174/2009. Re-garding their appeals, Yangon Division Court heard thefinal arguments on 18 September and passed finaljudgments together at 10 am today.

In reviewing the reasons of the lawyers of theappeal plaintiffs, there are two main points: (1) the 1974constitution of the Socialist Republic of the Union ofMyanmar became null and void due to the situations thathappened in the country in 1988 and (2) it cannot be saidthat Daw Aung San Suu Kyi breached the terms of therestrictions and continued restrictions against her origi-nal rights prescribed in the 1974 constitution as they hadnot been the legal ones before. Therefore, it is necessaryto conclude whether the 1974 constitution is still inforce or not. The 2008 constitution of the Republic of theUnion of Myanmar has been approved by the nationalreferendum. The third paragraph of the preamble of theconstitution states that “In order to gain independencespeedily, the Constitution was hastily drafted, and it wasadopted by the Constituent Assembly on 24th Septem-ber 1947. After attaining independence, ParliamentaryDemocracy System was practised in the State in accordwith the Constitution of the Union of Myanmar. How-ever, as democratic system could not be effectivelymaterialized, the new Constitution of the Socialist Re-public of the Union of Myanmar was drafted based onthe single party system, and after holding a NationalReferendum, a socialist democratic State was set up in1974. The Constitution came to an end because of thegeneral situation occurred in 1988.” According to thestatement, it is found that the 1974 constitution becamenull and void due to the situations that happened in thecountry in 1988. The sixth paragraph of the announce-ment No 1/90 of the State Law and Order RestorationCouncil states that “the State Law and Order RestorationCouncil (Tatmadaw) is an organization that is ruling thecountry with martial law and it is not an organization thatis practising any constitution. The SLORC Governmentis ruling the country as a military government and it isknown to all that it is the government accepted by theUnited Nations and world nations.”

According to the above statement, it is found thatthe State Law and Order Restoration Council (Tatmadaw)clearly stated that it did not practise any constitution. Itis therefore clear that at a time when the Tatmadaw tookover the State duties in order to save the country in timethat was in deteriorating situation, the 1974 constitutionbecame null and void.

The constitution of a country has to be prescribedin accord with the wishes of its people. As for the 1947constitution, the State leaders hastily drafted it at aConstituent Assembly as they wanted to gain independ-ence speedily in a peaceful way. Then the independencewas announced. As to the 1974 constitution, the draftone was first written and it was approved and promul-gated through the referendum.

The 2008 constitution was prescribed on 29 May2008 through the national referendum only after theNational Convention had adopted basic principles anddetailed basic principles. This is why the constitutioncame into existence after the true desire of the people hadbeen obtained.

Here, it is necessary to be aware of the fact that theconstitution and the statute law are different. In the

Criminal appeal cases No 173/2009 and No 174/2009 rejected and judgment anddecree of Yangon North District Court confirmed

Declaration No 6/88 issued by the State Law and OrderRestoration Council, it is stated that on 18 September,1988 when the SLORC took over the State duties, all theexisting laws are still in effect until it dissolves orrevokes them. The existing laws mean ordinary statutes. In these expressions, the constitution is not included.

Sub-Article (A) of Article 202 of the 1974 consti-tution states that this Constitution is the Basic Law of allthe Laws of the Union. Section-449 of the 2008 consti-tution also states that this Constitution is the Basic Lawof all the Laws of the Union. Looking at those provi-sions, the constitution is the basis of all existing laws.Based on the constitution, all other existing laws have tobe prescribed to be in conformity with that constitution. The constitution is not to be prescribed based on theexisting laws. It can therefore be said that the statementof the deputy division law officer that the provisionsincluded in the constitution that is not contrary to theexisting laws shall not become null void is not true.

Therefore, it can be deduced from the foregoinglegal points along with the nature of the law, the 1974constitution of the Socialist Republic of Myanmar be-came null and void following the general deterioration in1988, and that is stated in the third paragraph of the StateConstitution of the Union of the Republic of Myanmar.

The second part is to decide whether or not therestriction order, the prohibition order and the continuedprohibition order on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi are legiti-mate, and she violated these orders. The scrutinizationof the primary case exposes that Daw Aung San SuuKyi, Daw Khin Khin Win, Ma Win Ma Ma (a) Ange Layand Mr John William Yettaw were put on trial under theLaw to Safeguard the State Against the Dangers ofThose Desiring to Cause Subversive Acts.

The Law to Safeguard the State Against theDangers of Those Desiring to Cause Subversive Actswas promulgated under Pyithu Hluttaw Law No. 3 in1975. The 1988 situations put an end to the 1974constitution, but the State Law and Order RestorationCouncil did not promulgate or nullify the law. In 1991,the State Law and Order Restoration Council amendedthe law under Law No 11/91. Therefore, the Law toSafeguard the State against the Dangers of Those Desir-ing to Cause Subversive Acts is still in force, and it is theoriginal law.

Here, the purpose of the Law to Safeguard theState against the Dangers of Those Desiring to CauseSubversive Acts needs to be explained. The law isdesigned to protect the State sovereignty and security, and community peace from threats, and safeguard thenation against those desiring to harm the State. In orderto achieve these objectives, the Central Body, also theadministrative body, was formed and then entrustedauthority to take preventive measures against possibledangers. The Central Body pursues the objectives byissuing restriction order, warrant for arrest and prohibi-tion order according to its executive authority. It has totake action and make a verdict according to the execu-tive power only when a person violates restriction order, warrant for arrest and prohibition order issued under theauthority of the Central Body.

Evidence (b) restriction order, evidence (b-1)prohibition order and evidence (b-2) are the orders theCentral Body issued on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi underArticle (7), Article 10 (b) and Article 11 under the Lawto Safeguard the State Against the Dangers of ThoseDesiring to Cause Subversive Acts. The law is still ineffect, so it cannot be deemed if the said orders issuedaccording to the law are illegitimate orders. It will be

unwise if the law is deemed to have been null and voidlike the 1974 constitution. The 1974 constitution and theexisting laws are separate laws. Therefore, it is fair tosay that the revision case filed by the lawyers of appealplaintiffs should not be accepted for hearing.

According to the witnesses who argued in theprimary case, US citizen Mr John William Yettawentered the residence of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi twice. In the first time, he left Book of Mormon. In the processof searching the house, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi took thebook from the altar in her house and gave it to theofficials. In the second time, she accepted the letters andbooks given by Mr John William Yettaw’s daughter. The statements of the witnesses have made it apparentthat while staying in her house, Mr John William Yettawtook many photos and made several home videos andbrought them along with him. Appeal plaintiffs DawKhin Khin Win and Ma Win Ma Ma (a) Ange Lay livetogether with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The statementsof the plaintiff witnesses also made it clear that while MrJohn William Yettaw was staying in the residence ofDaw Aung San Suu Kyi, the two violated the law incollusion with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi by helping himwith making bed and laying the table for meals for him.

Paragraph (c) of the prohibition order and contin-ued prohibition order on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi saysnot to communicate outside by post or by telegraph. Theinitial court defined the expression “communicate” incombination with the expression “outside” stated in theparagraph (c). Here, the expression “communicate”means the deal between the one who communicates andthe one who is communicated. Only then will they beable to contact with each other. Accepting outsidecontact means communicating outside, so it shall bedeemed that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi re-communicatedMr John William Yettaw by accepting his contact. Therefore, the initial district court’s decision “she failedto abide by the prohibition order” is not wrong. Theargument given by the lawyer of the appeal plaintiff —considering the expression “outside” to be “making acontact” by combining the expression with anotherexpression “communication” can make the initial ex-pression greatly confused— is deemed to be wrong.

On the whole, the 1988 unrest made the 1974constitution null and void, but the Law to Safeguard theState Against the Dangers of Those Desiring to CauseSubversive Acts is still in effect and it is therefore anexisting law. According to the statements of the plaintiffwitnesses, it makes it clear that defendants Daw AungSan Suu Kyi, Daw Khin Khin Win and Ma Win Ma Ma(a) Ange Lay failed to honour the restriction order, theprohibition order and the continued prohibition orderissued under the provisions of the law. Therefore, it isnot wrong that the initial district court sentenced DawAung San Suu Kyi under Article (22) of the law andDaw Khin Khin Win and Ma Win Ma Ma (a) Ange Layunder Article (19) of Code of Criminal Procedure andArticle (22) of the law.

Therefore, it is hereby announced that based onthe above-mentioned facts, the judgment and order ofYangon North District Court are confirmed and rejectthe criminal appeal cases Nos 173/2009 and 174/2009.

Appeal plaintiffs’ lawyers U Kyi Win, U NyanWin, U Hla Myo Myint and Daw Khin Htay Kywe, and appeal defendants’ deputy law officers fromYangon Division Court Daw Khin Mar Kyi, DawKhin Mayday and U Myat Khaing were present at thehearings.

UK dig finds Roman amphitheatreROME, 2 Oct—British archaeologists

have unearthed an amphitheatre at a an-cient port outside Rome which mayhave played host to emperors such asHadrian and Trajan. The team, led bythe University of Southampton, say thearena could have held up to 2,000people and been used for gladiatorgames or animal baiting.

It was found inside a giganticimperial-style palace within the well-preserved old harbour of Portus.

Experts said the entire site deservedgreater recognition. The excavationteam, which also included archaeolo-gists from Cambridge University, hasspent two years at Portus, about 20miles (32km) from the Italian capital.

They worked in collaboration with

the British School at Rome on the firstlarge-scale dig at Portus.

The ancient gateway to theMediterranean Sea, which is twice thesize of the port of Southampton, supplied the centre of the RomanEmpire with food, slaves, wild animalsand building materials for hundreds ofyears. It is now two miles inland andnext to Fiumicino Airport’s runway.

The project concentrated on thebanks of a hexagonal-shaped man-made lake which formed part of the2nd Century harbour. This area wasfirst excavated in the 1860s and whatmight have been a theatre was discov-ered and marked on plans, but no traceof the building could subsequently befound.—Internet

Stillbirth in firstpregnancy raises risk for

subsequent pregnancy LOS ANGELES, 2 Oct — Women who experience astillbirth in their first pregnancy may be at higher riskfor complications or adverse outcomes in their nextpregnancy, a new study has said. A first pregnancy which resulted in stillbirth wasassociated with increased risk of placental diseases, fetal distress, chorioamnionitis and neonatal mortal-ity in the second pregnancy, compared to a pregnancythat resulted in live birth, according to a study appear-ing online in the October issue of the American Jour-nal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study was conducted by researchers at KaiserPermanente, a medical institution in Los Angeles. Theresearchers examined 71,315 Kaiser PermanenteSouthern California members from diverse racial andethnic backgrounds who delivered one child at 20-44weeks’ gestation between 1991 to 2008. They found that women whose first pregnancy re-sulted in stillbirth tended to be younger, African Ameri-can and had started prenatal care later in the pregnancy,as well as having a shorter interval between the firsttwo pregnancies. A stillbirth in the first pregnancy was also associ-ated with an increased risk of spontaneous pretermbirth and stillbirth in the second pregnancy, an obser-vation that is consistent with the findings of previousstudies, said Dr Darios Getahun, the study’s leadauthor. — Xinhua

Suppliers face winter fluvaccine delays, cutbacksWASHINGTON , 2 Oct — Waiting for the swine flu vac-

cine? Well, you might have to wait a bit longer for aseasonal flu shot, too. The biggest makers of seasonal fluvaccines in the US are running into delays or cutting backshipments — partly because of the crunch to producemillions of doses of the new swine flu vaccine.

Drugmaker Sanofi Pasteur said it has shipped morethan half of the 50.5 million doses of seasonal flu vac-cine ordered and it could be November before some UScustomers get the rest of their shipments. Novartis AGand GlaxoSmithKline PLC said on Thursday their ship-ments are on schedule. But they’ve told customers theymay get about 10 percent less than ordered. The threecompanies account for about 100 million of the nation’sexpected 114 million doses.

The delay and cutbacks have already forced somedoctor’s offices to turn away patients and others to can-cel clinics around the country. In Lyon County, Kan, thehealth department canceled next week’s drive-thru flushot clinic because it used up the doses it received inAugust and hasn’t received any more.—Internet
