September 2017

Dear Friends,

Many of us within our villages are dog owners and those of us who are frequently find ourselves chatting to one another as our dogs stop to sniff each other out, tangle up their leads and want to play. There are even times when the dogs get fed up with our chatting and sit down with a sigh.

In Thorpe End dog walkers are often seen holding little bags (and I am sure there are times when I wave them at people who wave to me from their cars), because on the whole we are responsible dog owners and pick up behind our pets. Unfortunately, there is only one dog waste bin in the main part of the village, so once past that the choice is to take the bag home and put in your own bin. At least that should be the choice, however recently bags of dog mess have been deposited in the bins at St. David’s.

Please would you not do this, it is unnecessary, and causes a smell and flies. The Green bins at St. David’s are for the use of hall and church users, they are not public waste bins. Putting waste in these bins is the equivalent of someone walking into your garden and putting their rubbish in your bin.

Perhaps the answer is to approach the Parish Council for another bin on the corner of Green Lane, but until then on behalf of the PCC may I ask you to please take your bags home. Fortunately, we don’t have this problem at the other three churches. Yours in Christ

Darleen

Childhood Memories Do you ever reminisce about your childhood or think of some of the games you used to play? If so, our next evening is one you should not miss - Angela Bishop will be bringing and talking about childhood "Toys and Games". She aims to make her evenings amusing and fun as well as to stimulate your old memories. The competition, for anybody who wishes to take part, is "Childhood Memories". The date for your diary: Thursday September 21st, 7.15 pm prompt in St David's Church Hall. Hosts: Thorpe End WI. Visitors are welcome to attend this and any other meetings free of charge, although we may encourage you to buy a raffle ticket to cover the cost of refreshments. For more details, please see our website www.thorpeendwi.wordpress.com or phone Carole on 434228 or Rosemary on 435123. On 20th July we invited members from neighbouring WI's to our "Fun with Flowers" evening. Fifteen visitors and 25 of our members enjoyed Crystal Dyball's amusing talk and helpful descriptions whilst she made four stunning arrangements, which were raffled off at the end of the evening. A great spread of food was provided by our Committee and we all agreed we had enjoyed a friendly, relaxed and entertaining evening catching up with our visitors. In August there was no formal meeting in the church hall. Instead several of us had a brilliant evening of wine tasting at the Paddock Farm Shop in Mulbarton. We set off for the vineyard on a hay wagon or on foot, inspected the vines, whilst being how Hummbleyard wines came into being and the basics of growing. We then tasted two wines whilst standing in the vineyard, the first being a very refreshing sparkling wine. As rain threatened, we headed back to the farm shop, again on the hay wagon, where we proceeded to taste several more white wines and three rosés, accompanied by a good spread of home cooked pizza and other treats. Photos from July and August can be seen in the Photos section of our website:www.thorpeend.wi.wordpress.com and also in the What We Did in 2017 section. Please do take a look!

Thorpe End Village Hall is looking for someone to join the Committee to oversee repairs and maintenance of the Hall. This would suit someone who has retired and wishes to be involved in the running of the Hall. If you are interested, please [email protected].

Gt. & Lt. Plumstead & District Horticultural Society The Club had a very enjoyable weekend visiting Polesden Lacey and Hampton Court.and the Summer Show went very well despite the rain and it was amazing how many lovely exhibits had been entered and members had done extremely well. After the presentation of cups to Derek Sheldrake, Jean Sheldrake, Ruth Boden, David Curtis, Wendy Stevens and Dennis Stevens the day ended with a raffle. The August meeting welcomed Ian Bedford, a Research Entomologist, who talked about “Butterflies” and showed slides describing their life cycle from a caterpillar how it develops and how important they are to research. This was a very informative and interesting topic. The flower of the month was won by Derek Sheldrake.. The next meeting on Monday 4th September 2017 will be at 7.30 pm at St David’s Thorpe End the speaker will be Don Andrews on “Dahlias”. The flower of the month can be one of members own choice The meeting on Monday 2nd October 2017 will be at 7.30 pm at St David’s Thorpe End and the speaker will be Charlotte Philcox on “Remedies and Rosewater”.
