THE LCE NEWS ' ' ^Published and distributed every two week»-lby THE LEAGUE FOR CIVIL ESUCATI^1154 Kearney, San Francisco, 11, C alifornia ' • SUtter 1-2,940^ - Issue 16 October J961
This i s 4he f ir s t issue of th is publication and is by d irection of the-Board of Directors of^ THE LEAGUE FOR CIVIL EDUCATION. We are d efin ate ly not trying to capture a P u litzer Prize for reporting earth-shattering events. This publication w ill reportHhe day-to-^lay happènings in (the "coniQunity'l. We w ill try to keep you informed on this coming events of in terest and to try to make you aware of your part in the preservation of your personal l ib e r t ie s w ill be the prime objects of THE LEE NEWS.< There w ill not be an attempt to make t h is a professional news le t t e r ? therefore we ask your indulgence as we s ta r t on th is venture.
ThejLEAGUE,FOR'CIVIL EDUCATION is a non-profit orgauization, chartered by/tlrr State of C a liforn ia ,.by and for c itizen s of San Francisco who b e liev e :" a ll me are created equal atid are endowed by th eir creator with certain iù a lien able, r ig h ts , and that among these are l i f e , lib er ty and the pursuit of happiness'.' To put _ th is quotation from^tha Declaration_6f Independence into proper perspective: Our leca lgovernments also wePe formed to insure these H h ^ rties, not- to take them away. However the
can be assured is to keep a le r t as the the never ending encroaçluuent of the bigot and the^^^u.nformed.' I t is th a -f ir s t ' duty of every c itiz en to reg ister to vote, then
*'to vote. I t is the duty of each c it iz en to ppotestwhen th eir rights and lib e r t ie s are threatened. 'Only', by being vocal-can a group, ' however lo o se ly confederated, make th e ir wieg-
'ht f e l t .
I t is noted with in terest ^ a t the h^ b er of fr iv ilo u s arrests are on the decrease. The i
, Chief of P olice is to be congratulated. Hut regardless hoy w ell ordered a police department is there seems always to be some bad app le s . SAn Francisco has far le ss than th e ir share of th ese. ‘ ■ -
The E lection of November 7 is a few weeks away and the incfeas^ in reg istra tio n , we believ e is ( i^ ir e c t resu lt of the drive sustained by'th is'organization since la s t e lec tio n . Immediately a fter th is e lec tio n another drivé
jw ill ^t"underway." ItT is our estimate that we"“ have in the "community" 10,000 new voters.Next year we hope to have "another 10,000.
The p olicy of the League precludes the endorsement of'any candidate, However in looking over the candidates and t lie ir platforms, most of them seem to have'very l i t t l e to o ffer other than ( l ) Cheap Transportation for the old fo lks; ( 2) Teeming down the freeways; ( 3)
(Building new freeways. In fa c t most 'of them seem to be running for Seiiior Class President, not public o f f ic e . I f more p o litic ia n s would use th e ir platform as a basic statement of p o licy , instead of trying to get something for everyone, c itizen s wodld be more inclined to ^
go to the P o lls on E lection Day.
Else where in th is publication is a paid ad for one of the Candidates for the o ffice of Supervisor for' the City and County of San Francisco. The acceptance of th is ad does not constitu te endorsement. Some of the members o f.th e League have been quite active promoting the'Candidacy o f Jose. Sarria, but again th is does not mean the League's endorsement. We do note that h is platform str ik es at thè. ' heart of' the prqj lems in^.San.Fra
Voters »should know that there w ill, be fiv e o f f ic ia open on the Board oi” Supervisors^in -
^ h is e lec tio n . That is you may vote for any f iv e . However, your vote w ill be more powerful^ i f you vote only for those candidates in
f which you are si,ncerei:y in terested . The vote .'that you cast for the person you do not know
may be the one that e le c ts him and f in a lly 'defeats the candidate in which you are in terested . ' . ■ ^
A decision o f the Board of Directors .of the " League that would be o f .in te r e s t to non-members provides that dues be prorated fo> the year. That i s , persons join ing before^Dec 31 need pay only $5. for the remainder ofthe f isc a l year ending 30 June 1962.

A new brochure regarding the League w ill be available for d istrib u tion to a l l interested
'by the end of the month." Almost daily we “ have inquiries from-varying.parts of the cou

.Many times in the past, law enforcement o ff—' icers have stopped pedestrians on the s tr ee ts and f i l l e d out a ''m aSe^r^". T h e^ u es^ has been asked of the Lea^e as to thé l e g- a lity q jf'th is. Our Legal. Counsel has advised us that you must give them yoqr name and ad- dress but beyond that nothing is necessary.I f you are asked where yOu work, th is infonm ation is an invasion' of your perswial p r ic e y and is not" a question that you have' to answer. However, a l l p o liten ess must be uàed or you might have, trouble. The question has al> so beën asked: "What'information should^begiven i f arrested", Again, our Legal Counsel advises us that you must give your name and address ^ l y . The attorney you hire to defend you w ill have a b etter chance of protec- tin g youir rights i f you make no other s ta te ment. / VhaV you need at th is time however is not air attorney but someone to go your b a il.
Many persons get understandably excited .when.' they are arrested and w ill admit to anything
but you can not' be forcéd to .t e s t ify against you rself. Iir^odays complicated laws, rules and regulations, when involved with the law — you aeêd a lawyer. Oftimes the"money an a ttorney can save you is far le s s than the fine . and the future g r ie f far exceeds the fe e . i The c la ss ic statement "Why do I need an a ttorney when I am innotíent" should be reserved for children. .
In lin e with the above, many people Iiave ' lo s t good jobs because they gave th e ir occupation and place of employment to the pólice and then the newspapers p u b lish ed 'if. i t is not necessary to give y o u r ^ a c e o f employ-^

There is an in terestin g case of entrapment-^ '. involving"the use of a lis te n in g device that -the League is watching quite c lo se ly .

I t has been noted over the past years th t many of the people ini a ll walks o f l i f e use th is holiday for lewdness, hoodluàism, vandalism, e tc . Let us hope that th is year the p o liM department exerts their-, se lv es to put a sto |? to. the innumerable beatings, th ievery , and vandalism.
