Students painting the posters at the venue
The Inter- School Poster & Slogan Making Competition
(September 28th 2010)
An Inter School Poster and Slogan making competition was organised
by the Centre for Consumer Studies, the Indian Institute of Public
Administration, New Delhi in collaboration with the Gen X Consumer Club of
the Air Force School, Subroto Park, New Delhi on 28th September, 2010. The
Department of Consumer Affair, Government of India, sponsored the
competition. 20 Schools participated in the competition with two students from
each school (one junior level i.e. VII, VIII, IX & one senior level i.e. X, XI, XII).
The objective of the competition was to create awareness among the students
in the areas of consumer rights, duties & responsibilities of consumers and
role of individuals as consumers in the society. It was an effort to make
students understand the role & importance of Consumer Protection.
The competition was done for two levels of students i.e. Group A –
Junior level (classes VII, VIII, IX) and Group B- Senior level (classes X, XI,
XII). The topics of the groups were – Group A – Jaguruk Grahak Surakshit
Grahak and Group B – Junk, The Junk Food. The time duration for the
competition was one hour and one participant from each group had to make a
poster with an appropriate slogan.

The programme started with a floral welcome of the Chief Guest and
the judges followed by lighting of the lamp. The chief guest for the function
was Mrs. Pushpa Girimaji, a Senior Journalist and Consumer Affairs
Specialist. The other dignitaries who graced the occasion were Group Capt.
BCS Bharathi, Chairman Air Force School; Dr. Mamta Pathania, Assistant
Professor, Centre for Consumer Studies, IIPA and Mr. G. C. Mathur, Trustee
and Convenor Binty.
Mrs. Pushpa Girimaji in her inaugural address highlighted the
importance of Consumer Protection in day to day life. Stressing on the
importance of consumer rights she emphasized that consumers should not
only focus on their rights but also try and think about consumer
responsibilities which are equally important. She highlighted that consumer
safety is another aspect which needs to be given due attention and especially
children should take due care of safety instructions on products while
purchasing and using products. One should not fall victim of the fake claims
made by certain advertisements which target young children and thus lure
them to buy different products. This was followed by a presentation on Junk
Food by the students of Gen X Consumer Club. Dr. Mamta Pathania,
Assistant Professor, CCS, IIPA made a presentation on how to mobilize the
Chief Guest Mrs. Pushpa Girimaji lighting the lamp

consumer clubs in schools. Apart from general awareness on various
schemes and policies of government for consumer protection she focused her
presentation on what and how of consumer clubs.
On the final judgement part, prizes and certificates were given to 6
students from Group A and 6 from Group B. However certificates were
awarded to all the participants. One poster was chosen for getting it published
it as a Deepawali Greeting Card by the Centre for Consumer studies (Annex-
I). Out of the total participants 12 entries were selected by the Centre for
Consumer studies for getting them published with the students name & school
along with the poster for the next year’s calendar. (Annex. -II) The programme
ended with a vote of thanks by the Mrs. Deepika Thaper Singh, Principal, The
Air Force School, Subroto Park, New Delhi.
The report would be incomplete, if we do not record our appreciation to
Mrs. Deepika Thapar Singh, Principal, The Air Force School, Subroto Park for
her support and cooperation in conducting the programme. Mrs. Lomina Rajiv
and other staff members of the school deserve special mention for their
support.
We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our
gratitude to Dr. Rakesh Hooja, Director, IIPA for his guidance, encouragement
and pro-active interest. The Secretary, Additional Secretary and Joint
Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs,
Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, deserve special thanks for
sponsoring the Centre for Consumer Studies and reposing confidence and
trust in the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.
