he Magic Valley’s early 20th Century transition into an agricultural powerhouse is retold at the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, which also embraces nature conservation as a wing of the World Birding Center.

On a break from cross-border shopping excursions, visitors to this museum on the Rio Grande can learn about the steam-driven irrigation pumps that transformed Hidalgo County into a year-round farming phenomenon. They also can wander the museum’s grounds, where hummingbird gardens are planned, and where many of the Valley’s amazing bird species are regular visitors as well. The Land... Next door to the museum, more than 600 acres of U.S. Fish and Wildlife land is being re-planted with native Huis-ache, Texas Ebony and Anacua, and will be an impor-tant birding tract when opened as part of the WBC. Plans are to also replant museum grounds with the types of native trees, shrubs and flowers that attract Valley birds and butter-flies.The Birds...Tropical kingfishers – both green and ringed – like the combination of water and woodland along the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse’s now abandoned intake channel. Those flood-plain woodlands also harbor the Great Kiskadee, Green Jay, Clay-colored Robin, Altamira Oriole and other Valley specialties. In winter, various colorful warblers, kinglets and gnatcatchers can be found chasing their insect meals.Learn and Discover For now, visiting birders can tour the museum and grounds on their own or by appointment. New hike and bike trails through the adjacent federal refuge are expected by next spring and work also will be starting soon on new hum-mingbird and butterfly gardens around the museum.More Information The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse can be contacted at www.hidalgotexas.com/pumphouse or by calling (956) 843-8686.

rape Creek Vineyard’s terroir has a rich legacy beyond it’s recent wine his-tory. The property sits on what is believed to have been a Commanche camp-ground. Evidence of their presence is in the form of spearheads, arrowheads

and skinning tools found on the property. The banks of Grape Creek afforded the native tribes access to year-round water and cool breezes. Also traversing the property is the original Fredericksburg road. Many a settler used this artery to reach town for trading, worship and to enjoy their “Sunday House” in town.A History Lesson In 1985, Ned and Nel Simes, the original owners of Grape Creek Vineyards, began a 20-year journey to create a recognized winery in the Texas Hill Country. They planted over 20 acres of Cabernet and Chardonnay and also established the first underground barrel cellar in the Pedernales River Valley, which can be viewed on tours through the winery. Ned passed away in 2004 and the new owner Brian Heath purchased the property and business from Ned’s heirs in early 2006. Heath immediately embarked on a renovation and expansion of the facilities. This included transforming what once was the residence into the Tuscan Villa tast-ing room and event center. A new rock bell tower and wall were added, along with a new entry road off highway 290. Also, an aggressive program of vineyard planting and investing in substantially improved wine production capabilities was undertaken. Ready to Stay? The Villa on Grape Creek is located on our winery property and has beauti-ful views of the vineyard, the banks of Grape Creek, the rolling hills and natural landscape of the area. Reserve an evening, a weekend, or even a week to come stay with and enjoy a little rest and relaxation away from home. Located only 10 minutes from historic downtown Fred-ericksburg, you have ac-cess to a quaint downtown shopping area with several options for casual or fine dining. You can return to the tasting room for a White La-bel tasting and later to your Villa to enjoy an elegant bottle of wine on a crisp, cool evening in the beautiful hill country. The Villa has two bedrooms and two baths and can accommodate up to four adults. Each bedroom has a queen bed, private bath, closet and coffee maker. The 1,200-square foot Villa includes a full kitchen, breakfast nook, writing desk, spacious sitting room, tv with dvd player and views of the vineyards For more information on this Vineyard or Villas, visit their website at www.grapecreek.com or call (830) 644-2710.

One of Texas’ major cities, located in rich agricultural region of the Brazos River Val-ley. Modern industry thrives, but city retains flavor of its past when five “C’s” were its support: cattle, cot-ton, corn, collegians, and culture. Large, cold springs on the Brazos River were long popular with the Waco Indians. First non-na-tives to see area were remnants of De Soto’s band in 1542. Texas Ranger fort established near Indian village in 1837; first white settlers came 12 years later. Great planta-tions along the Brazos prospered briefly, but Civil War wrecked plantation economy and scattered population. Renewed Western movement and Chisholm Trail through

Waco brought another boom-and frontier wild-ness that nicknamed the town “Six-shooter Junc-tion.”

Today known for edu-cational, cultural, and recreational facilities. Heart O’ Texas Fair and Rodeo, first week in Oct., is professional rodeo with entertainers, livestock and horse shows, and fine arts exhibits. Institutions of higher learning are Baylor Univ., McLennan Com-munity College, and Texas State Technical College.

Several air-conditioned, self-guided tours lead visitors through the captain’s quarters, admiral’s quarters, navigation and flag bridge, sick bay and engine room. very city has its own individual char-acteristics that make it stand out from every other city out there. New York has

the Empire State Building. Los Angeles has the Hollywood sign. Chicago is known for the brisk winds that blow in off Lake Michi-gan and Austin touts itself as the “Live Music Capital of Texas.”

So what is it that makes Corpus Christi so special? What can you find here that you can’t find anywhere else, or, at least, that you can’t find in most other cities you visit?

What’s in a Name? You can start with the name, for one.

You’ll find only one city on the entire planet that goes by the name Corpus Christi, which is Latin for “Body of Christ.” The name comes from the bay of the same name, which is said to have been discovered by Alonzo Álvarez de Piñeda on the Roman Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi.

Aquatics and more...The Texas State Aquarium is another

uniquely Corpus Christi experience. The official aquarium of Texas is one of the top 10 aquariums in the nation and specializes in chronicling the biodiversity of the Gulf of Mexico.

The Texas State Aquarium is dedicated to the study of flora and fauna of the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent coastline. It features a 132,000-gallon aquarium with a reproduc-tion of an offshore oil rig, a smaller, more colorful aquarium with a reproduction of a coral reef and numerous other tanks and ex-hibits featuring sea turtles, Texas river otters and birds of prey.

Corpus Christi Beach is also home to another popular Texas tourist attraction. The USS Lexington, a World War II-era decom-missioned aircraft carrier, is moored just off the beach a short walk north of the aquari-

Ocean Drive... The city’s Ocean Drive of-

fers a driving experience not enjoyed by most cities. This popular avenue runs along Corpus Christi Bay and fea-tures several fine homes. The city’s favorite park – Cole Park – is located on Ocean Drive overlooking the bay. KidsPlace is a huge wooden play area in the park with stairs, ramps, ladders and lots of cool tunnels.

The opportunity to com-mune with nature is among the main reasons people visit Corpus Christi. The endangered whooping cranes spend their winters at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge north of Corpus Christi, and each summer scads of endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle hatchlings are released into the wild.

While on your nature jaunt, you don’t want to miss the South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center which has become one of the region’s top nature tourism destinations showcasing colorful, exotic floral exhibits blended with vast conserved areas of native habitat and natural wetlands. The 180-acre site is an integral part of the city’s growing Oso Creek Greenbelt system and is a part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail.

Water Sports...Corpus Christi is a perfect setting for water sports en-

thusiasts. Not only is the area teeming with water, it’s also one of the windiest spots in the nation, which means sail-ors, windsurfers and kitesurf-ers will never find themselves longing for a good breeze.

Water sports include sail-ing, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking, scuba diving, riding personal water-craft, motor-boating, para-sailing and paddleboating.

Sailing has long been a popular sport in the Corpus Christi area. The Corpus Christi marina is evidence of

that, with boats packing the slips and the bayfront dot-ted with billowing white sails many evenings and almost every weekend.

Wednesday nights are good times to experience Cor-pus Christi sailing for the first time, whether as a specta-tor or a participant. The Wednesday night regatta at-tracts amateur – and not so amateur – sailors competing in various divisions over a course laid out over Corpus Christi Bay. Show up around 5 p.m. and you might even get the chance to serve as a crew member on one of the boats.

Sailboats are available for rent along the bayfront. Contact the city’s marina office at (361) 882-7333 for information on how to charter a boat or to find an expe-rienced sailor to take you out for the day or evening.

Page 35: The Hotel Guide - Winter Edition

Windsurfing...Corpus Christi has

been home to one of the top windsurf-ing competitions in the world for sever-al years. Kitesurfing and other extreme sports have been added in recent years. The four-day event now includes skateboarding and bicycle stunt per-formances at the annual Velocity Games/U.S. Open Windsurfing & Kiteboarding Champi-onships.

One of the best spots in the world to windsurf can be found at Bird Island Basin at Padre Island National Seashore. The water is shallow and the winds steady at this popular spot, which attracts people from all over the world.

Surfing, too...Surfing is popular along the

Texas coast as well. Surfers can be found near the piers and jetties on Padre and Mustang islands. Popular spots include the beaches of Port Aransas, J.P. Luby Surf Park and Bob Hall Pier in the Corpus Christi section of Padre Island.

KayakingKayaking has become a popu-

lar water sport in recent years. Kayaks are for sale or rent at spots all along the Texas coast, including Corpus Christi, Port Aransas and Rockport. Kayak-ing guide services will rent you a kayak and take you to popu-lar kayaking spots for exploring and fishing and will pick you up when you’re done.

Personal watercraft are avail-able for rent at city marinas, beaches and roadways along area waterways. Scuba diving in Corpus Christi will take you to offshore oil and gas platforms, or to destinations outside the area.

Finally, the kids will enjoy

renting a paddleboat and cruising around the sheltered waters of the marina.

Dicken’s on the Strandalveston Historical Foundation Executive

Director Dwayne Jones Launch Slideshow is pleased to announce that the organiza-

tion’s most important annual fundraising event, the 35-year-old Dickens on The Strand Victorian holiday festival, will take place this year, even in the face of extensive flood damage by Hurricane Ike to the historic downtown where the festival is held.

Dickens on The Strand is always held the first weekend in December. This year, the festival is scheduled for December 6 and 7 with special events including a Dickens feast and holiday handbell concerts slated for the Friday before (December 5).

A Little HistoryDickens on The Strand originated in 1973 as an eve-

ning potluck celebration of Galveston’s Victorian-era downtown, including re-enactments from Charles Dick-ens’ novel “A Christmas Carol.” The festival was held to bring people back into a 19th-century era downtown that had been neglected for decades - so they could see new restoration efforts and participate in a celebration focused on Galveston’s Victorian heritage.

Since then, the festival has evolved into a full weekend event teeming with Victorian-costumed vendors, enter-tainers, and guests as well as a wide array of special events in historic properties throughout the island - includ-ing holiday house tours, a feast, concerts, breakfasts, and a Dickens Ball.

FUNdraising...Over the years, with funds raised by its Dickens festival,

Galveston Historical Foundation has succeeded in its partnership efforts to revitalize the island’s historic down-town. Prior to Hurricane Ike, Galveston’s downtown had been fully restored, and boasted a wide array of thriving boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants.

Galveston’s downtown is federally designated as a National Historic Landmark District. It boasts one of the largest collections of restored 19th-century iron-front com-mercial buildings in the country. The downtown Strand National Historic Landmark District and the residential East End Historic Landmark District comprise the largest federally recognized historic landmark district area in the state of Texas. During Hurricane Ike, this historic area was severely affected, flooding by as much as 12 feet in many downtown buildings.

Galveston Historical FoundationGalveston Historical Foundation is one of the larg-

est local preservation organizations in the country. It is

the steward of 13 historic properties including Bishop’s Palace, the 1877 tall ship Elissa and the oldest residence on the island, the Michel B. Menard House. Several GHF properties were severely damaged by Hurricane Ike - the worst including GHF headquarters, the 1861 U.S. Custom House along with the antebellum Ashton Villa house museum. Built in 1859, it is the oldest mansion on Galveston’s grand Broadway.

“Now more than ever we need our Dickens on The Strand Festival to take place,” said GHF executive director Dwayne Jones. “Our downtown businesses are all facing extensive flood remediation right now. If we can aim for the Dickens festival - a little more than two months from now - as a moment when people who love Galveston can come visit and check on our progress and help us raise the money we need to continue our restora-tion efforts, that will be a very good thing for all of us.”

Nacogdoches, Texas:Nine Flags Festival

or more than a decade, the Nine Flags Festival has

paid homage to the rich and spirited history of the oldest town in Texas. That history includes three attempts to establish a Republic of Texas. Thus, nine flags have flown over Nacogdoches as opposed to the six that have represented Texas. They are French, Span-ish, Magee-Gutierrez, Dr. James Long, Mexican, Fredonia Rebellion, Lone Star, Confederate Stars & Bars and United States of America.

Since its inception in 1997, the Nine Flags Festival has

become one of the premier holi-day celebrations in the state and has been recognized by the Texas Legislature for its community edu-cation and historic restoration ef-forts. The 11th annual Nine Flags Festival held in 2007 paid special tribute to the French flag with special events planned to recog-nize the town’s French influence. This year the 12th annual Nine Flags Festival will pay homage to the Mexican Flag, and honor our town’s Mexican heritage and in-fluence with several special events dedicated to our neighbors to the south.

or years now, the Historic Jefferson Foundation put on an event for all to revel in during the Holidays. The 26th Annual Candlelight Tour of Homes is a holiday tradtion

and one that travelers shouldn’t miss!Victorian CastleVictorian Castle was built in the 1890s by William E. Single-

ton Jr. for his wife, Victoria. It was named for her and for its architectural style. The house features 11-foot ceilings, an ornate stairway, original wood floors and an up-stairs with unique turret and balcony bedrooms. It has two fireplaces that have been restored to their original splendor with a portrait of the original owner above the library fire-place. The Singletons had six children, all of whom were said to be musically inclined and the parlor is host to the original piano where the family often entertained guests. Owned by Karen and Richard Penner and located at 301 Clarksville Street, Victorian Castle has carried on the tradition of provid-ing a wonderful home from one family to the next.

61 Dallas St.No. 61 Dallas

Street is a com-mercial brick structure built in 1860 by John B. Ligor. Before, during and after the War Between the States, the structure served a variety of com-mercial interests, including a livery stable, a Con-federate hat factory and a saloon. Known locally as the “Old Masonic Building, it was one of the few structures remaining from the mid-1850s Jefferson steamboat wharf district along Dallas Street. When it was purchased by the Jefferson Junior Historical Society in 1974, it was the first youth restoration preservation project in Texas. The current owners, Christine and PhilWelch, purchased the structure in 2003, and they recently completed the restoration into a historic saloon and townhouse.

Sagamore HouseSagamore House, built in 1852, is a beautiful example of

a vernacular Texas house with Greek Revival influence. It originally was the home of Henry Scott, a partner in the first commercial ice plant in Texas. Several notable families have worked to restore and maintain the historic home. It is currently owned by Gary Slade and Tom Clift, and is located at 201 East Dixon Street in Jeffersons historic district. The home has been completely restored and furnished with country primitive antiques appropriate to the period. It features a large living/formal dining room with 13-foot ceilings featuring rich crown moulding, original brick wood-burning fireplaces and original heart-of-pine floors. The back yard is shaded by 150-year-old pecan trees.

Ford-Vaughn HomeThe modest,

Craftsman-style bungalow at 601 East Jefferson Street was built in 1921 by Henry and Lou Moseley Davis, and they lived there more than 50 years. It was a Sears catalog house in a kit that included all the materi-als needed for construction. Some of the homes features are short, tapered porch columns on brick pedestals, original Art Deco porch light fixtures and exposed rafter tails. The original wood floors, French doors, and numerous large windows with heavily molded cross trim contribute to the charm and quaint-ness of the cottage. The house has the distinction of being one of the towns first bed and breakfasts and was known as the Gingerbread House. l Paso’s history is ingrained in the lifeline of Texas and Mexico. The city grew from earlier settlements dating back to the Juan de Oñate expedition in

1598 and a settlement by Juan Maria Ponce de León in 1827, although area missions predate that civil settlement by almost 150 years. El Paso is the largest United States city on the Mexi-can border and neighboring Juárez, is Mexico’s largest border city. The combined populations are about two million.

Mission:Possible.Located in El Paso’s Lower Valley,

are three stately adobe churches that remain as living testaments to the faith of the Spanish and Indian ancestors. The Ysleta Mission, established in 1682, is the cornerstone of the Ysleta del Sur Indian Pueblo. Two miles east on Socorro Road is the Socorro Mission, first built in 1682. Six miles farther east is the San Elizario Chapel that was established in 1789.

Lubbock, Texas:Heart & Soul of the Texas Panhandle

tanding on the plains of West Texas, as you feel the warm breeze on your face, you will be surrounded with the pioneering spirit that

tamed this land known as Lubbock. The dancing yellows, oranges and purples of a West Texas sunset ease even the busiest mind. Witnessing nature is only one of the many reasons to visit the Texas you’ve always dreamed of.

S

History Lesson...On March 16, 1909, Lubbock officially became an

incorporated community and the celebration of being a new town began. Soon, it became the center of com-merce, medicine, education and entertainment for all of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico and was appropri-ately labeled the “Hub of the Plains.” Now, Lubbock resi-dents are planning for a year-long Centennial Celebra-tion which began in March 2008, and will culminate with a party and Lubbock legends concert in March 2009, featuring Lubbock-grown entertainers past, present, and future.

With a growing population of more than 255,000, Lubbock is carving out a dominant role in the West Texas landscape. Already home to a thriving agribusiness culture, an eminent university system, and a regional medical powerhouse, Lubbock is forging a new reputa-tion as a fertile setting for revolutionary enterprise and technology.

Unlock the secrets that give Lubbock a unique spirit; from down-home country dining to unrivaled shopping and outdoor fun, Lubbock is home to Texas Tech Univer-sity, Buddy Holly and a legendary ranching and music heritage.

Texas Tech UniversityTexas Tech University is the largest comprehensive high-

er education institution in the western two-thirds of the state of Texas and also attracts visitors to Lubbock. With its red tiles blazing beneath boundless West Texas skies and a public art program ranked among the nation’s 10 best, Texas Tech’s beauty will jump out when you drive onto campus.

Less visible, however, are Texas Tech’s other assets. The proud new host of a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society, Texas Tech houses 28,000 students and a world-quality faculty. Noted scholars and lecturers visit the campus throughout the year for presentations to students, faculty, staff and the public.

Throughout the year, the University also offers a wide selection of theater, music and dance performances and, of course, Big XII sporting events.

Musical LegendsWest Texas musicians forever impacted the music scene

and Lubbock’s own Buddy Holly played a major role. The West Texas Walk of Fame featuring the Buddy Holly

statue is a larger-than-life tribute to the legendary Lubbock musi-cian. Two-step along the West Texas Walk of Fame honoring West Texas music legends includ-ing Waylon Jennings, Mac Davis, Roy Orbison and Tanya Tucker.

Follow Buddy Holly’s life in Lub-bock as you take the Buddy Holly Historical Tour. See the church Buddy attended, the radio studio he performed in, his grave, high school and more.

Continue the celebration of Buddy Holly’s life and achievements at the Buddy Holly Center. Visitors can see artifacts including Buddy’s own Fender Stratocaster guitar, his famous glasses, photo-graphs, a songbook used by Buddy and The Crickets, recording contracts and more. The Buddy Holly Center also features the Lubbock Fine Arts Gallery, a 2,500 square foot gallery dedicated to the presentation of changing contemporary visual arts programs.

West Texas music, with its inimitable style and sound, attracts acclaim—and tourism interest—from around the world. There is no better place to discover and hear this music and explore its cultural heritage than Lubbock’s Depot Entertainment District. At the heart of this down-town destination is The Cactus Theater, an iconic Lubbock landmark trans-formed in 1994 from an abandoned movie theater into a state-of-the-art per-formance venue. The Depot Entertainment District has grown to include venues for en-tertainment, arts and cultural programs. An award-winning micro-brewery, boutiques, art studios, restau-rants and live-music venues are part of the exciting mix.

Prairie Dog TownWatch nature’s clowns experience the trials and tribula-

tions of everyday prairie dog life. At Prairie Dog Town, in Mackenzie Park, the whole family will get a kick out of observing these little critters in their natural habitat. Prairie Dog Town was the first protected prairie dog colony of its kind and began with four dogs and two burrows. A recent renovation brought enhancements including a pavilion and viewing area, bus parking, in-

terpretive signage and more. When visiting the prairie dogs, bring car-rots or cookies to share!

Visit one of our numerous ranches in and around the city of Lubbock where you can see a working ranch, experience a chuck wagon dinner, ride horses, explore the grounds and feel the true West under your boots.

recognized museum that houses collections in the arts, humanities and sciences; the American Wind Power Center, a museum for the American-style water-pumping windmills located on 28 acres; Mackenzie Park, Lub-bock’s largest recreation area featuring a golf course, amusement park, equestrian trails and more; the Na-tional Ranching Heritage Center, a site where the story of ranching in North America is told through the preser-vation of 45 authentic structures displayed on 16 acres; and the Science Spectrum & OMNI Theater, a unique, hands-on museum featuring interactive science exhibits and a domed screen that lets the audience feel like they are a part of the movie.
