Dear Readers, Welcome to your October edition of ‘ The Hampton

Viewer’.

Autumn is in the air and it feels that the kids have just returned to school and half term is already looming. Don’t fret, I know it seems a mammoth task to keep them entertained, but we are

here to help! We have included lots of activities and fun things to do, such as a visit to Pigeon Farm, they have lots of activities and events going on throughout October (page 17) or spooky

activities at One Leisure Sawtry (page 15). On a wet day why not visit Lakeside Bowling (page 17) or an afternoon baking - there’s a great recipe for a Halloween treat - Cherry Fudge (page12). Also see

page 35 for more ideas.

For those of you that enjoy Night Watching, this month we see the return of the Night Watching blog by a our local Night Watch-man. I Hope you enjoy the read.

Finally, as always

I thank you all for your support and hope you have a

great October and a spooky Halloween!

Until next month!

Sky In The Night

W elcome back to my night-watching blog. It’s been a while since the last article (check out my web site for

past articles). But it’s back for now, if you like it then let me have some feedback please. October is a good month for seeing Jupiter,

especially on 29th when it is in opposition (directly opposite the Sun from the point of view of the Earth). At around 0100 it’ll be due south and fairly high in the sky – it’s easy to spot because it’s so bright. Have a look back at article #1 on my web site for more details of Jupiter. If that’s a bit late (or early) for you then you’ll have to wait until the sec-ond week in November when you’ll see it clearly, high in the sky, at around 2230 (ish). You won’t be able to see Mercury, Venus

or Saturn this month because they’re all too close to the Sun at the moment. You can see Mars but only very early in the morning to start with, by the end of the month it will be rising at around midnight. This month’s image shows the night sky at

2200 on 15th October. The left hand edge of the image represents due West and the right hand edge due North. The North Star, Polaris is also shown. The two marker stars that most people use

to find Polaris are in Ursa Major and are cir-cled, basically follow the line of these stars and you will reach the North Star. Polaris is virtually at true north and is getting fraction-

ally closer to true north all the time. It is a double star 460 light years away from Earth. The two stars are very close together in the sky and being able to see them separately is a good test of your vision and the quality of a small telescope (you can’t do it without a telescope, no matter how much you squint). Their magnitudes are 2.1 and 8.2 (the lower the number, the brighter the object) which is what makes it difficult to see the different stars. Polaris does not move relative to the

viewer. If you go out a couple of hours later you’ll see that Ursa Major has rotated around Polaris. This is because Polaris is very close to the axis of rotation of the Earth. If you were at the North Pole it would be directly above you (you’d also be cold)! October is also a good month to observe

Hercules which is known as a summer con-stellation so it won’t be around for long. The circle in Hercules is where you can locate the globular cluster M13 which is the brightest in the northern hemisphere and you should be able to see it with a good pair of binoculars (subject to being in a dark place). The clus-ter is a sphere about 200 light years across and contains over 300,000 stars. It is 23,500 light years away from Earth. Happy observing, if there’s anything in par-ticular you’d like me to discuss just let me know.

Renault Koleos You only have to look over the fence to sister firm Nissan to see that crossovers can be successful – try and order a Qashqai or Juke now and you’ll be looking at a rather long wait. So it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why the Renault Koleos flopped. Renault launched it in 2008 and by 2010 it had been axed, selling just 2,890. The Qashqai, by comparison, sold 9,253 models in March alone.

Nissan Cube The Cube has been a cult hit for years w i th unof f i c ia l imports snapped up by style conscious

buyers keen for something unique. So when Nissan decided to bring the latest model to the UK officially in 2009, it was sure it had a hit on its hands. Unfortunately, the maker gave it little publicity, it was expensive and soon became too costly to import from Japan. 1,000 were sold which Nissan says was ‘over its estimate’. We don’t believe them.

Citroen C6 We all know that large French saloons haven’t been the most popular cars in Britain. Despite this, Citroen launched the C6 in 2006 with phrases like ‘free-thinking’, ‘svelte’, and ‘unmistakable’ in its marketing bumpf. From its launch to the end of 2010, Citroen sold just 889 units – the E60 BMW 5 Series sold ten times as many in the same period. But Citroen always said it had expectations the C6 would find homes ‘in the hundreds, rather than thousands’.

Chrysler Sebring Chrysler had its eye on entering the D-segment back in 2007 – and thought the Sebring was the answer. It wasn’t. The press packs said it combined ‘striking design with interior craftsmanship’ with ‘great performance’ thrown in for good measure. The public disagreed and bought only 2,652 of them before it slipped off the price lists in 2009. In the same period, Ford sold 126,368 units of the Mondeo.

Subaru Tribeca L i ke Renau l t , Subaru believed it needed an SUV in its range. So, in 2006, along came t h e T r i b e c a .

Intended to offer a ‘practical SUV with great handling and a sporty drive’ it failed to find buyers. A face-lift in 2008 did nothing to improve sales and it bowed out that year with just 750 sold. In contrast, the Volvo XC90 – a car Subaru was competing with – sold 11,897 units in the same three years.

Toyota Urban Cruiser The Toyota Urban Cruiser went on sale in May 2009. Designed to meet a ‘ g r o w i n g demand for vehicles that are cut out for life on urban roads’ it didn’t do the job. Sales at the end of 2010 were 3,017 – the maker had planed to shift 2,000 units a year.

Quiet disasters

Motor

CAR makers. Give them their due, they normally produce some rather good motors. But occasionally – very occasionally – disasters that should have remained in the design studio slip through the net. Here we take a look at the top of the flops.

Chrysler Crossfire Launched with great fanfare in 2003, the Crossfire was Chrysler’s sports

car for the masses. Based on the first-generation Mercedes SLK, it came in coupe and convertible forms with retro American styling. However, only 4,544 units were sold in five years, and the Crossfire quietly died in 2008. In contrast the SLK sold 4,362 units in 2004 alone.

Vauxhall Signum More than just a cut-down Vectra, the Signum was intended to offer the executive experience in an otherwise humdrum Vauxhall and arrived in 2003. But almost five years to the day, Vauxhall called time on the Signum, axing it with just 17,344 sales to its name. This was ‘on target’ according to the firm but industry experts say it was well off what was originally planned.

The Whinge The Running Man

B y the time you are reading this I will be in my final prepara-

tions for the Perkins Great East Run on October 9th. However, if my preparations are not going according to plan then you probably won’t be reading this until several weeks after the run – because it will probably take me that long to re-cover. This will be my first half-

marathon. When I tell peo-ple that I just get one ques-tion from absolutely every-body – what time do you expect to finish in? Unusually for me I’m often quite polite and just say that I hope to get round and have-n’t really set a time. Of course like all run-ners I do have a time in mind – Sunday! This particular race; I say race but that

rather assumes I will be racing whereas I’m far more likely just plodding round, wheezing and coughing & being overtaken by the people who clear up all the mess at the end. I would say that I expect to be over-taken by doddering old folk who received their telegraph from the Queen whilst I was still at school, but to be overtaken by them I would need to get in front of them at some point. Anyway, this particular race is part of my preparations for something much bigger which will be announced in a few issues time (subject to me completing this half-marathon) so watch out for that – it’s big exciting news! Well it’s not really, but I shall be telling you about it anyway. As an essential part of my preparations it

was vital that I took a holiday in the middle of summer – alright I know I’m stretching the point but if I can get away with it… As I was on holiday I obviously felt the need to relax and enjoy myself, but kept at the back of my mind what was coming up all too soon after my return. So whilst away I took some running literature, went to the gym a few

times and even went for a couple of runs. I didn’t al-ways get up quite so early as when I’m at home and have to go into the office, but on one morning I did get up before my family and went for a morning run down to the beach and along the promenade. It was pleasant and I met other runners. In fact I met more runners than I’ve ever encountered. Nor-mally when out it’s polite to give a cheery “morning” or some such greeting, but there were so many runners I

soon got fed up with that, stuck my sun-glasses, & iPod on and put my head down. It may have been a tad rude, but I pre-tended to be foreign – which of course I was. Before we came home the weather

started to cool a little. It had been mid to high 30s, but after a day of rain and a rather enthusiastic thunder storm it dropped about 10 degrees. By then we had become accli-matised to the higher temperatures and noticed the difference. About this time I had just finished reading an article about someone who had struggled back from the brink, turned his life around and started run-ning ultra-marathons, one of which is the Marathon de Sables, a six day 151 mile race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco. Tem-peratures reach over 50ºc and the runners race across dunes of hot sand carrying all of their equipment. So I thought a mid-day jog around the local harbour in temperatures of mid 20s, and with quite a cloudy sky should be just a little bit harder than a stroll in the park. At least in theory. Noel Coward was right by the way. I

came across just as many people as before, but not nearly as many runners – I think I only met one other. In hindsight this should have told me something, but when I started I was in the zone, so I didn’t really notice.

Cont’d ….

You know when they say you need to still use sun lotion even when it’s cloudy and you can’t feel the heat from the sun? Well the reason is that it’s still hot, even if it might not feel hot, it still is. By the time I’d got half way round my

run I was absolutely soaking wet; I could-n’t have been any wetter if I’d jumped in the sea dressed in a big sponge outfit. And when you’re that wet and it’s that hot it gets difficult to breathe let alone run at anything more than a snail’s pace. That’s why the Spanish have a siesta in the afternoon. So have I learnt my lesson? Of course

not, if you haven’t worked it out by now I’m just a little unhinged, but what I have learnt is that I shall not be entering the Marathon de Sables, but something a bit cooler, maybe something a bit Artic in nature would be more my cup of tea!

AUTUMN LAWN CARE & AERATION Aerating (mechanically punching

thousands of holes in to the lawn) benefits the soil in the following ways:

• Loosens compacted soil and increases the availability of water and nutrients.

• Enhances oxygen levels in the soil, stimulating root growth and enhancing beneficial bacteria in the soil to multiply and feed the grass.

• Allows water to drain away from surface reducing the incidence of moss.

• The physical action of aerating severs roots and stimulates new roots to fill up the holes

• Increases drought tolerance and improves overall health.

Aeration is best carried out in the Autumn. It is advisable to over-seed and top dress

with sand: soil dressing if budget allows.

Crossed Keys By Greg Lyons

A new half-hour play from Eastern Angles Theatre

Company.

T he streets of Peterborough are paved with stories. Like any his-toric city there are tales of love,

laughter, conflict and loss. In Crossed Keys Peterborough play-wright Greg Lyons brings us bang up to date with story straight from the street.

Michael is down on his luck. Hussein and Shahruk would be on cloud nine if it weren't for her family. When the nostalgic ramblings of the old Irishman and the anxieties of the young mar-ried couple collide the three charac-ters are united by a simple pattern in the block paving. This brand new piece of drama from one of the region’s top touring theatre companies will be popping-up in venues all over Peterborough from Wednesday 28th September. Venues include The Brewery Tap, Peterbor-ough Cathedral and St Botolph’s Barn.
