Hello, and

welcome to the

April edition of

‘The Hampton Viewer’

The flowers are finally coming to bloom, the days are getting longer and the temperature is beginning to thaw. So

with a new found spring in our step, we’ve got plenty to get you set for the exciting season ahead and the Easter weekend just round the corner. But this doesn’t have to be all about chocolates, there’s plenty of other things to do. See pages 36 and 37 for some fun ideas of activities and outings to share with your family.

Also, the “Villages of Rockingham Forest Bike Ride” is back this year in aid of The British Heart Foundation. So if you do want to raise money for charity and want to enjoy a 25 or 50 mile bike ride at the same time, please see page 12 for the details. Sticking to good causes, Sue Ryder is encouraging people to organise a fundraising event perhaps with a 1950s

theme or involving the number 60 to celebrate 60 years of care around the world. See details on page 6.

Also, make sure you’re not caught out on April Fools Day! The BBC have played some memorable pranks over the years, one has to be the 1957 Panorama report on the bumper spaghetti crop (well before my time - but have been told!).

Huge numbers of viewers were fooled by the footage of Swiss pheasants gathering long strands of pasta from the trees! And more recently in 2002, Tesco published an advert publicising the genetically modified vegetable. The advert said it had air holes in the side and that it whistled when it was fully cooked! So Watch Out!!!

Wishing you all a wonderful April!

Sixty great reasons for Tea

Sue Ryder - Thorpe Hall Hospice

T housands of people in Peterborough

and its surrounding counties have

benefited from the lifetime’s work of

an inspirational woman.

And this year, the charity that she set up

will call on the local community to help

celebrate sixty years of care around the

world.

Sue Ryder set up her charity in 1953 after

witnessing the atrocities of the Second

World War as a member of the Special

Operations Executive & locally, Thorpe Hall

Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough was

opened in 1991.

For its diamond celebrations, Sue Ryder is

encouraging people to organise a fund-

raising event perhaps with a 1950s theme

or involving the number 60. The charity is

planning vintage tea parties and hopes

that supporters will organise their own.

Sue Ryder fundraiser at Thorpe Hall Jackie

Page said: “We've put together a party kit,

complete with bunting and invitations.

There's also our tea party guide and

recipes, so if that sounds like fun, you can

start planning your party now.

“Whether at work, home or in the commu-

nity, we are asking people to help us

celebrate our 60 years of incredible care

with friends and family by having fun and

raising money for a great cause. Could

you raise £600 in 60 days or sell 60

cupcakes in 60 minutes? The possibilities

are endless.”

Sue Ryder started her first home at the age

of 29 in her mother’s house in Suffolk to

help disabled people and refugees,

particularly from Poland.

Jackie Page said: “Sue Ryder, who later

became Baroness Ryder of Warsaw, died

in 2000 but her legacy is the wonderful

work that continues to help people around

the world.

“Locally, Thorpe Hall hospice has delivered

incredible specialist care and emotional

support to people with incurable illness

serving the community in five counties

within a 35 mile radius.”

anniversary fundraising ideas, get in

In The Night Sky #25

A s I write this we’ve had a

disappointing few weeks of sky

watching because of the weather.

We’ve missed comet PANSTARRS on its

approach to the Sun, hopefully we should

get a decent view as the month progresses,

but just in case log on to NASA and have a

look at their images - not quite the same I

know, but at least you’ll get to see some

images of the comet.

As for April there is an event that we should

be able to see unless it’s very, very cloudy -

there’s a partial Lunar eclipse, albeit a very

minor one so you will have to look carefully.

A Lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth’s

shadow obscures the Sun’s light. The

picture below is of the total lunar eclipse on

December 20th, 2010 as viewed from

Hampton.

The orange glow is produced because

some of the Sun’s light is bent towards the

moon by the Earth’s atmosphere. Other

colours are either absorbed or bent away

from the Moon, in effect it’s as though all

the sunrises and sunsets are refracted onto

the Moon and reflected back to us.

The occurance of a total lunar eclipse is

dependant upon a happy coincidence

that the distance from the Earth to the

Moon is exactly right, but the Moon is

moving away from the Earth at about 4cm

a year so in a few billion years total eclipses

won’t happen - so take advantage of them

whilst you can!

For this one, however, only about 2 percent

of the Moon will be within the dark shadow

(known as the umbral shadow).

April will also bring spring skies to the Northern

hemisphere so although we’ll lose Perseus,

Orion and Andromeda from our night

viewing we will now be able to enjoy

Hercules, Cygnus & Lyra in the evening sky.

Happy Night Watching!

The Whinge

The Magic Roundabout

L ast month I told you about my lack of

Internet connection and the effect

on my digital life. Well this month I

am at last connected and re-digitized,

much to the relief of my family but to the

dismay of all the local coffee shops!

So you might be forgiven for thinking that I

couldn't possible still be moaning about

my ISP. Unfortunately, the saga continues.

I had to wait a while after I was finally

connected before I could make a final

complaint and claim for a refund for the

period when I had no service. Mainly

because I had so much catching up to

do, but also to let some of the caffeine

leach from my system. Otherwise I would

have been speaking at a rate that no

ordinary mortal could understand let

alone a service desk operative.

Now as it happens I clearly didn't leave it

long enough. My first problem was that

what I wanted to do - complain - wasn't

an option I was presented with by the

automatic answering system. I doubted

that this was because this was an option

very few people wanted so there must be

a perfectly logical explanation for this.

Maybe there was a specific number, so I

checked. But no I had the correct

number so I persevered. I later found out

that "we don't have any specific

complaints department, so we don't

provide that as an option".

Eventually, I got to speak to a human.

The wrong one apparently, so I was

transferred. To another wrong person,

who transferred me again. This time I,

allegedly got through to a person who

should be able to help me!

However, I found out that I was not

entitled to any refund for the service I

hadn't received because I didn't have a

complaint registered against my account.

I had made a total of four complaints,

one of which I escalated two levels of

management. But it didn't show on my

account.

So now I had to phone back to try and

make a complaint about the fact that my

previous complaints had not been

registered and that the "not the

complaints" department were unable to

refund me for a service they hadn't

provided me with but had charged me

for. Read that bit again, I promise it will

make sense eventually.

After I phoned back and was transferred

a number of times again I finally got

through to someone who did help me.

She explained that she just worked in wi-fi

support and only really dealt with

technical issues, but I think she actually

felt sorry for me: either that or she sensed

the steam escaping from my head. She

said "I don't know what they're on about I

can clearly see the complaints on your

account". She spoke to someone and all

of a sudden I had the refund I wanted.

What a drama!

Next time I need help with my broadband

I think I'll phone the gas board because

obviously I'll get a faster response.

Driveway and Patio Cleaning and Sealing

N ow that winter is finally over and

Spring is rapidly approaching, it is

time to look at maintaining your

driveway and patio and preparing it for the

summer.

Blackjack Surface Technology Ltd. offer a

cleaning and sealing service for all hard

paving types whether it is Block Paving,

Patterned Concrete, Tarmac or Natural

Stone.

Block Paving can be washed to remove

algae and weeds and restore its original

colour. The jointing sand removed when

washing should then be replaced to ensure

that the blocks bind together and do not

move. An optional sealer can be applied to

further enhance the colour of the blocks

and solidify the jointing sand making it far

less likely that weeds will grow or ants will

colonise your paving.

Tarmac can be washed to remove moss and

dirt and the seal coated to restore its colour

and protect from the effects of harmful UV

rays and weathering. This should be done

every 2 or 3 years from new to greatly

increase the life of your driveway.

Patterned concrete should be washed and

re-sealed every 2 years. This will bring your

paving back to life and restore the origi-

nal colour, protect from staining and pro-

tect from the effects of weather.

As well as offering a complete

cleaning and sealing service,

Blackjack also sell a range of

professional sealers and cleaning

products for all paving types on

their website at

www.blackjacksurfacetechnology.com

for those of you that wish to do

it yourself.

For April 2013 - By Astrologer Christine Chalklin

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 Hot, hot, hot - with so many planets in

your sign this is a month full of explosive

energy. You might not be in agreement

with people who have different views, or

try to restrict you in any way. Great revelations are

possible, best to wait until end of the month to make

big decisions, as rash moves don’t always pay off!

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 Taurus has lots to think about this month,

so many planets in a deeply introspective

sector of your chart can only mean one

thing – step back and take time out!

Reflection is the key word and many things will need

addressing. Clarity should return round the 20th

, as

planetary energy concentrates in your sign.

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Mighty Jupiter in your sign urges you to

communicate in an entirely new way. So

many planets in fiery Aries mean that

new friends and new adventures are

definitely on the horizon. The New moon on the

10th

brings your attention to an exciting new project

or goal, possibly with caring and charitable concerns.

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 This is the month of achievement for

Cancerians – in your private life or in your

career, four planets occupy the most

pivotal point of your chart and whatever

you feel right now, exciting times are coming your

way! Define your strategy for the rest of the year,

the powerful new moon on the 10th

is very auspicious.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 Travel, adventure and further education

are all in the spotlight for Leos this month.

Your ruler, the powerful Sun, illuminates

an action packed area of your chart – the

sky’s the limit, so go for gold! The new moon on the

10th

is particularly powerful, Communicative Mer-

cury gives you more strength after the 14th.

VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22 Financial dealings, legacies & resources

are all in the spotlight this month. A

complete overhaul may well be necessary

now. Let your creativity flow and use

your imagination for new projects. Try not to take

any major risks, particularly financial ones, until the

heavens calm down after the 20th

.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 Relationships are in the spotlight this

month. With so many planets in fiery

Aries all partnership concerns & issues will

be brought to the surface, whether you

like it or not! A relationship may end, may change,

or an exciting one may begin. Embrace the change

& liberation that this extraordinary time brings.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 Your work, your career and your

ultimate future are highlighted this

month. Stern Saturn in Scorpio ensures

that you build solid foundations for

lasting change. Benevolent Jupiter helps existing

plans and goals to expand, as you’ll be in the right

place at the right time, for maximum benefit.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 A month of heightened creativity and

hot passionate love is on the horizon for

Sagittarius! We start the month with

the moon in your sign and as this cycle

builds to the new moon on the 10th

you should be

feeling at your all time best. The only down side is

that you take on too much – take it easy and enjoy!

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Pluto, master of transformation, is

progressing steadily through your sign

& your need for change & re-evaluation

will also be gathering momentum. So

many planets in fiery Aries cause you to question

some domestic arrangements. The new moon in

Aries on the 10th

increases confidence – no more

holding back!

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 Your ruler, the ever unpredictable

Uranus is joined by three other planets

in fiery Aries. Expansive Jupiter in

Gemini brings optimism and joy into

your life, particularly from people around you.

Communication, speaking and writing should be a

source of great pleasure now and socialising will

also be high on the agenda.

PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20 Attention turns to goals, achievement

& your self-worth during April. Finances

are also highlighted & rearranging some

monetary matters may also be on the

agenda. On the 10th

the new moon energy starts a

new cycle of opportunity and growth, coupled with

energetic Mars your confidence should be high.
