Welcome to the 36th edition of the Craic in Galway magazine.
Nothing beats the winter blues like hopping on a bicycle and cycling
on a Greenway against the wind and rain. The satisfaction of it is
the same as having a hot whiskey by an open fire. I recently had the
opportunity to cycle part of the Westport to Achill Greenway along the
wild Atlantic coastline. In fairness, we only made it to the first port of
call, Newport, before we were beaten back by the weather. However
it was still an achievement to have 22k under our belts before teatime
and a well deserved slap up meal. I felt like a child who rediscovers
the joy of ambling about on two wheels without the worry of any
traffic whatsoever. Here in Galway, they have begun work on the first
Greenway section between Clifden and Oughterard and, if all goes well,
planning permission will be sought next year for the section between
NUIG and Moycullen. I would be a happy camper if that goes ahead.
Speaking of happy campers, craicing congratulations to Galway man,
Gary Thornton, for winning yet another extreme adventure marathon.
Gort’s Cathal Manning is off to compete for a boxing All Ireland title
and one Galway businesswoman is taking her home-grown venture to
London. It ’s all between the pages of our little but large magazine,
including your two week diary, nightlife photos, features and fun!
Happy Reading,
Sure it’s all a bit of craic!

Galway’s Cathal Manning is in fighting form as he gears up for the All Ireland boxing
championships this weekend on Saturday, November 15th. He will be competing in the heavy weight division and has been training hard for the event. Cathal is best known in kickboxing circles, with many national and European titles under his belt. Now, he is set for a new challenge as he moves ever further into the world of boxing.
“I am confident and nervous at the same time,” says Cathal. “I want to show the boxing community what I am made of. They may not know me before, but they will know me after Saturday!”
Cathal trains twice per day, a mix of running and the gym, with the Corrib Boxing club. He first began kickboxing when he was 14-years-old and hasn’t looked back. It was the spark that ignited his passion for the sport. Cathal is known for his left hook and was “always better at punching than kicking!”
“I was playing soccer with Our Ladies Boys Club on Sea Road and I looked into
this class at Columban hall,” he explains. “I just wanted to give it a go and found out it was the Black Dragon Kickboxing club. I had my first fight few weeks later and went on to win Junior Irish titles, three European titles and came third in the World Championships in 2011.”
After his kickboxing success, the Rahoon man now “wants to make it at the boxing”. Today, Cathal lives in Gort with his partner, Lorraine Daly and their two young children. His family are fully supportive of his decision to pursue boxing.
“My daughter, Katelin, is just 10 months old and she was the boost I needed to get back into training,” he says. “They are my inspiration and they push me to do better. Lorraine met me through kickboxing and she understands the sport. If my son Darren wanted to take it up, I would definitely support him. I teach him what I can.”
Cathal extends his thanks to everyone in the Black Dragon Kickboxing Club, the Corrib Kickboxing Club and the Corrib Boxing Club for their support in the run up to his All Ireland Boxing challenge at the National Boxing Stadium in Dublin. Craicing good luck Cathal!

The Great Galleon €50k Giveaway
The Galleon Restaurant in Salthill celebrates 50 years this November and is splashing out on a €50,000 giveaway. To
mark the half century milestone of this landmark eatery - which was purchased on November 13th, 1964 - the Galleon are offering a food and drink bonanza to encourage diners to create new memories and reminisce on the old.
From November 13th, the first 2,500 customers will receive a €20 Galleon note, which can be used on their next visit to the popular restaurant - when they spend €50 or more.
This third generation family run business has become a Salthill institution. It was first purchased by Jimmy Lydon 50 years ago, passing to his son-in-law, John O’Sullivan in 1987 and is currently managed by his son, Roger.
Famous not only for good food and a family friendly atmosphere, the Galleon restaurant sits atop a treasure chest of chocolate gold coins for children. Legend has it that a galleon ship deposited these coins in a cave beneath the restaurant after it crashed into
a cliff. Now the trove has been extended to adults as the €50,000 Galleon giveaway begins.
“Our family is so grateful to all our team of today, and of all those from the years gone by, for all their loyalty, commitment and hard work over the years,” says Roger O’Sullivan.
“We are also truly appreciative to all our local community and our visitors over the years who have being so loyal and committed to The Galleon over the years, without whom we would not have lasted the test of time.
“The reason for our success is thanks to the collective part that each of them have played, and so we thank-you all for being a part in the journey towards reaching this momentous occasion.
“We are now running our €50,000 give away as a gesture to say a big thank-you to you all and also to celebrate this milestone,” he concludes.

Natty Wailer, former member of Bob Marley and the Wailers, will be going back to his roots at Jamaica Joes in the city for their official opening weekend. The restaurant will have their launch party on Saturday, November 15th at their premises on 19 Upper Abbeygate Street to celebrate the
first authentic Jamaican restaurant in Ireland. With live DJs all day and night, spot prizes and a chance to win a trip to Jamaica for two, its set to be a craicing event. To be in with a chance, make sure to like and share their facebook page. The draw will take place on Saturday 15th at 8pm.
He’s won the North Pole marathon and now Galway’s elite athlete, Gary Thornton from Newcastle, has beaten the heat by winning the 2014 Volcano Marathon in the driest place on earth. The event took place in Chile’s Atacama Desert and began at an altitude of over 14,000 feet. The primary school teacher at Claddagh National School was first to cross the line in the mammoth challenge, a route that took him alongside the most active volcanos in Northern Chile. The Volcano Marathon is among the highest and toughest marathons on the planet with athletes enduring strong headwinds, soaring temperatures and hilly, sandy terrain. Several
competitors required oxygen on finishing the event, however Gary showed his stamina by winning the 42.2km distance in four hours and ten minutes. This was almost two hours slower than his regular road marathon time, demonstrating the severeness of the race.

The video gaming scene has been booming here on the west coast over the last few years with a whole host of
different communities appearing and interacting with each other. At this stage, it seems like no matter what kind of video games you enjoy playing, Galway has you catered for. The city has seen many great players excelling at their games of choice and making a name for themselves within their respective circuits. One of the fun things about player games this way is breaking out and challenging other communities around Ireland.
That’s exactly what happened recently in Dublin with an all-Ireland style tournament called the Irish Open which invited fighting game fans from all over the country to come and compete against each other, and a team of Galway’s best fighters were also there to prove their skills.
There were a lot of games on the bill, including favourites like Street Fighter
and Tekken, and even some lesser known games like Melty Blood and Project M. Galway’s Street Fighter team put up a fantastic fight, playing hard against players from Ireland’s four provinces, each with their own favourite characters and unique style of play. It was a rollercoaster of a day, filled with incredible highs and many close battles between some amazing players.
Meeting new people and making friends from other counties while playing your favourite video games is always a fantastic experience. It sees Galway’s troops travelling far and wide to compete, and players visiting Galway to play in its regular tournaments too. It creates friendly competition and encourages all involved to constantly improve in order to represent their home towns and counties. The Irish Open was a huge success with approximately 100 people in attendance, and has left everyone waiting for the chance to meet up with their gaming friends at the next big event.

Well what do ya know, my first duck letter haha! That quacks me up! I sure as hell don’t know why the chicken crossed the road but I know why the duck did….. To attack the stupid idiot making a duck face haha! I know what you mean ducks of the world those girls are so annoyin’. You know the only reason they do it is cus they think it makes them look hot but honey scunchin
your mouth up aint gonna make that happen. Sure do it once, but when every dam picture they have is exactly the same I start to wonder is their face actually stuck like that! I recommend that every time we see someone doin’ it we put duck tape over their mouths and then rip it off that’ll teach them! We won’t have any more fowl play!
Firstly, I don’t think your ducks were talking to you and I think you should let your doctor know you are hearing voices coming from your ducks. I also believe that if ducks knew what was going on they would be fairly angry because I agree, duck faces are annoying and I would also like to tape people’s mouths with you but that might get us in trouble. We could come up with another plan or we could
simply ignore the idiots. If they want to spend their lives taking duck face selfies well then at least we know where the stupid girls are at all times and that they are not out operating heavy machinery or doing other jobs where they could end up injuring others. I think I choose not to give a flying duck about those girls and I wouldn’t let it get you down, if you can’t think of a solution you’ll have to wing it.
I am writing on behalf of my friends with an urgent message here it is: “Dear girls, please stop imitating us, you look so stupid and it’s offensive. Don’t you know that only suits us? You don’t look cute. We can’t help looking this way but you think with all your facial muscles you could be a bit more creative. It is extremely embarrassing to our species, yours
sincerely, Ducks.” They wanted to write it themselves but with the wings it’s a bit difficult. They are tired of these so called “duck faces” all over social media. They want their voices heard. I hope you support them and you will let the world know what you think. Mary, the bird whisperer.

Unless you have been living
under a rock recently, you may
have heard of these identical
twins, Alan and Gary Keery, from
Belfast. The pair have made
quite a name for themselves as
they are about to open London’s
first cereal café. And they haven’t
ruled out coming to Galway if the
venture takes off.
The concept is novel and will cater to all of us big kids - we love nostalgia and we love cereal! Thanks to the Keerys, we can now walk into a cereal world and be whisked back to our childhood. And they have plans to open a Cereal Killer Café in Dublin.
You can choose from a variety of over 100 cereals and toppings and 12 types of milk. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are also 18 flavours of pop-tart and toast. The brothers came up with the
idea while looking for a hangover cure lunch in London. They were craving a bowl of cereal and they couldn’t find what they were looking for. Cereal Killer Café will be opening this December in Shoreditch, London. The café will be at 139 Brick Lane, Shoreditch, will be spread over 2 floors.
“We remember how exciting cereal was as kids and we are trying to recreate it in our cafe, so you’ll be surrounded by a lot of vintage cereal memorabilia to stir up the nostalgia in all of us,” explains co-founder Alan Keery.
“We’re putting our own twist on a regular bowl of cereal by letting you customise it with different milks and toppings. This will be a cafe experience like no other.”

>>>>What do you make of the all the media attention?
Gary: It is a bit overwhelming to be honest. We knew we had a good idea and thought we would get a bit of press in London, but now we are getting calls and emails from every corner of the globe! Just crazy!
Do you eat a lot of cereal?
Loads! I’ve always got about 30 different cereals to choose from at home, but I’ll always snack on it through the day as well.
What cereal would you recommend?
I love anything peanut
butter! The Americans are mad on it. We have 5 different peanut butter cereals on the menu.
Are you excited about opening the doors in December?
Cannot wait! We came up with the idea last August and I feel like it’s all I’ve been talking about since then and now it’s finally here.
Would you ever consider locating to Galway city?
We want to concentrate on getting the first cafe in London right, but who knows what the future will hold.

To London, With Love
One Galway gal has taken her new locally made venture to London, as Louise De
Vignoles has turned a handcrafted hobby into a viable business. Her hand poured, high quality candles and wax bars have been picked up by Blue Almond in London, and are also on sale in Mulberry Lane, Mullingar and La Maison Chic, Galway.
Louise is already a recognisable and highly regarded local business woman in Galway since she established the New York Nail Salon in 2005 at the age of 23.
“Meeting new people and making them confident and happy is always a good feeling,” she says. “I’m extremely lucky to have the most loyal clients a salon could wish for and I’ve made a lot of friends over the years. I also get to unleash my arty vibe on the nails of daring clients (including my mum) which is cool!”
Now she’s spreading her wings as she brings her candle company ‘De Vignoles Atelier’ to the market. She is following in the footsteps of a creative family, as the wheels for De Vignoles Atelier were set in motion, many moons ago.
Inspired by the lavender fields near his grandparents home in Provence, France, Michael Vignole, set about making a homemade wax candle in a slow old fashioned double boiler on the cooker in his wife’s kitchen. Highly scented candles were rare in 1927 and the business did not take off.
Now in 2014, Louise has taken up the mantle and is lighting the way, through her new website and skilled marketing.
“My family are very creative,” says Louise, “they are a good support to me when I have ideas and want to test new fragrances on them! Initially I made the candles in my kitchen. But thankfully we now have a mini factory to work from. No more rose flavoured bread and tea bags!”

Louise loves poetry and each of her candles is described on the site in poetic form. She feels that this makes the website a bit different and fun. A clear step by step method of her classic candle creation is also shown on the site. She feels that an online presence is the best way forward for her new company.
“Every candle is personal from start to finish,” she says, “they are all hand poured and finished, combining old fashioned methods mixed with some new romantic poetry.”
Louise has introduced some lovely Christmas scents in time for the festive season to bring cheer to every household! These scents include “Christmas Eve in Galway”, “Le Matin de Noel”, “Rosemary and Eucalyptus” and “Winter Pomander”.

CRAIC at Galway Design Week
Aries: ‘Assertiveness’Sometimes we can get stuck in a
victim mentality. Maybe there is
a valid reason for it. But maybe,
just maybe, other people don’t
realise that’s how you feel. They
are not mind readers. It’s time to
communicate honestly and clearly
with others. There is a difference
between aggressiveness (passive or
otherwise) and assertiveness. Learn
the difference. It will give you peace.
Taurus: ‘Relationship’Every relationship starts with
yourself. As you feel better about
yourself, you’ll find your relationships
with others get better. This month,
you’ll find all your relationships
healing, which might include some
people leaving your life. Let it happen
if it needs to as maybe they’re not
meant to be there anymore.
Gemini: ‘Notice the signs’
This month take notice of coincidences,
signs, meetings and songs you hear
around. If your gut tells you to apply for
something, go to an event or a class, trust
it. The universe works in mysterious ways
and often we don’t trust our gut enough.
It is absolutely wise to take time to think
and use your head as well as your heart
in your life but try and balance it.
Cancer: ‘Steady Progress’
You tend to judge yourselves too harshly,
like Pisces. However, it’s important to
give yourself credit for what you have
achieved. Maybe you think you should
be further along in your life than you are.
That’s okay. But sometimes things take
time. Each day, take one step towards
achieving your goals and that can be
enough.
Leo: ‘Acceptance’My proud lions can be hard on
themselves and on others. Try a little
experiment this month. Next time
you are tempted to judge yourself
or another, state that you hope for
health and happiness instead and
move on. Let go of tendencies to
force things to happen and relax. It
will lead to less stress and perhaps a
more positive state of mind.
Virgo: ‘Reward yourself’Hello my Virgos! You’ve been working
very hard. It’s time to take a break
and do something nice for yourself,
even if it’s just a small treat. Everyone
needs a break sometimes. Appreciate
all that you have done and make
sure that you balance giving with
receiving.
Libra: ‘New Partner’This month someone new will enter
your life. Don’t go searching. It
will happen naturally. You will feel
familiar and safe around them. It
may be a new romantic relationship
but it could also be a friend, business
partner or mentor of some sort. It is
someone who can help you in some
way.
Scorpio: ‘The Ocean’Go for a walk on the prom or at Silver
strand in Barna! The sea is calling
you. It can inspire and refresh you. If
you can’t do that, then use some sea
salts in a bath and relax for an hour.
Perhaps you have been considering
taking up a water sport like surfing,
snorkelling or swimming. This is
validation that it is a good idea.
Sagittarius: ‘Go for it’This month, you are encouraged to go
after what you want. The universe is
behind you all the way. Any business
ideas are divinely inspired and you
should feel encouraged to act upon
them. You are on the right path.
Capricorn: ‘Listen’Have you ever considered taking
some time out, whether it is just
sitting by the ocean or going to a
meditation class? Turn off the radio
and television and take a break from
noisy environments. Sometimes it is
easily to make decisions and figure
out what you want when you’ve had
some quiet time to think.
Aquarius: ‘Cupid’Love is in the air this month which
is always nice. Instead of stressing
about your love life, you might find
that love happens when you fall in
love with life itself. Decide what it is
that you want and try to stop letting
past hurts dictate what happens in
your present and future.
Pisces: ‘Wedding’This month you’ve gotten a card
that is surrounded by love and
good energy! You may be about to
meet someone that you could marry
or meet someone at a wedding.
However, this can also mean a
positive and successful business
proposal or partnership. Be open
to love, romance, all types of
partnerships and see what happens.

Mo u n t b e l l e w drama group The Malthouse Players will bring Brendan
O’Carroll’s ‘The Course’ to Galway audiences this November. After a chance meeting in 1996 with Brendan O’Carroll, the Malthouse Players were awarded the amateur premiere of Brendan’s popular play ‘The Course’. During that conversation Brendan promised he would attend and, true to his word, he came to Mountbellew in 1997 for the premiere. In his address to the audience Brendan said that he was “never as proud of his work!” The play ran to packed audiences in Tuam, Ballinasloe, The Taibhdhearc and in the Boyle Arts Festival.
The Course is a riotous 3-Act comedy: fast-moving and with a motley collection of characters, the show is a treat, packed with the sharp one-liners and awkward situations which are the hallmark of O’Carroll’s quirky take on day-to-day life in modern Ireland.
The setting is a hotel, somewhere
in Ireland. Joe Daly, played by John Corcoran, is the instructor on Major Accident Insurance (plc) course for door-to-door sales persons. His 100% pupil success rates in graduation exams brings Group Controller Burt Rubenstein, (Phil Coffey) from US headquarters to investigate. Given an ultimatum to have 70% pass rate under Burt’s supervision, Joe struggles to meet the challenge as the next class are a bunch of “losers”.
The Malthouse Players have gone from strength to strength having twice won the All Ireland One-Act drama finals along the way, firstly in 1997 with ‘What’s For Pudding’, directed by Margaret Farrell and again in 2006 with ‘The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish’, directed by Lorraine Corcoran.
The Course will run in in Glenamaddy on Saturday 15 November and in The Taibhdhearc on Friday and Saturday 21/22 November. All shows will run at 8pm. Tickets are €12.00 and €10 concession, book tickets online at www.antaibhdhearc.com or phone the box office on 091-562024 or091-563600.

It’s that time of the year again. The time for men to keep their upper lip warm by growing a moustache in aid of cancer research.
Movember has become an annual event and seems to be becoming increasingly popular, especially with students. It’s a chance to make a real difference while having a little fun on the side.
The idea of Movember is quite simple. First, you register with their main website. This is a simple process and can be completed in a few short minutes. Then, you stop shaving above your top lip for the duration of the month. Finally, while grooming your fine new moustache, you spread the word throughout your friends, family, and social networking sites to inform them that you’re doing this to raise money and awareness for The Irish Cancer Society and its research into
testicular and prostate cancer.
It’s all for an excellent and incredibly important cause, but it also proves to be quite a lot of fun. Many people like to make a month-long event of it by attempting to grow huge moustaches in a similar fashion to that of their heroes. The Tom Selleck look is a common sight during the beginning of the winter, as is the classic Freddy Mercury facial hair arrangement. More confident men might try to pull off the rock ‘n’ roll handlebar moustache. People can even form online “teams” of moustache growers to maximize the money raised.
It may seem like a silly idea from the outside looking in, but its simplistic and fun nature makes it something that pretty much any man can do to fly the flag for men’s health. A little money can go a long way and a little effort can lead to an unusual and entertaining month that takes the cold bite out of November.

JCI Young Entrepreneurs:
I never took ballet as a child so my
image of a class was informed by the
movies. Silently concentrating students
in leotards and legwarmers and a strict
teacher bellowing commands, bun in
hair, scary stick in hand. A bit like army
drills, but in ballet pumps. Not so in
adult ballet class! There wasn’t a scary
moment in the hour-long lesson (apart
from my reflection in the mirror as I
attempted to balance, arms overhead,
one leg in the air). I took a Beginners/
Improvers level class with
Ballet Áthas in Terryland.
I was welcomed into the
bright and spacious studio
by Sharon, who is the most
encouraging teacher I’ve
ever encountered. She is
precise in her direction,
gentle in correction and
gives huge praise after
every exercise. The other
students were all women
(though I’m told some men
dance with the school as
well. Irish ones!) Some had
clearly danced before, while
some were late bloomers
like myself.
The warmup begins at the
barre, so you’re straight into
real ballet movements; demi plié, side
bend, rise, grand plié. There is a lot of
repetition so it’s easy to catch on. We did
a lot of barre work and then moved into
the centre to practice port de bras, or
‘carriage of the arms’. It’s tricky enough to
keep both arms moving simultaneously
and gracefully. But oh yes, I felt like a real
ballerina! Then the best bit: part of the
choreography from Cinderella, which
will be performed by Ballet Áthas in An
Taibhdhearc on 29 and 30 November. It
was a beautiful piece, set to gorgeous
music, in which Cinderella is coaxed by the
Prince to dance, and her movements show
her evolution from timid housecleaner to
confident ballgoer. We had to act out this
evolution in our dancing, which was so
fun! The class finished with the traditional
révérance; a bow and curtsey combination
which mimics performers thanking their
audience. It’s a lovely, positive way to
connect as students and teacher and
acknowledge the time spent together.
An unexpected and welcome after effect
of my ballet class was an almost total lack
of the back pain that had plagued me for
months, the following morning. Ballet
is basically good posture in action and
I think the constant realignment of my
spine and hips, coupled with back bends
and stretching, accelerated the correction
of an imbalance diagnosed by my physio
the previous week. For that reason alone,
I am now a huge fan of ballet! Sharon’s
website is called alovelyclass.com - and
that is exactly what I experienced.>>>>>

>>>>>>Ní dhearna mé bailé i mo ghasúr, faraor, agus mar sin is ó na scannáin a fuair mé íomhá den rang bailé: cailíní ciúine, gléasta i léatair, ag éisteacht go cruinn leis an múinteoir dian, í ag tabhairt orduithe ó bharr an ranga, ‘bun’ ina gruaig agus bata ina lámh. Cosúil le saighdiúirí ar pharáid ach le bróga bailé seachas bútaisí orthu. Ní mar sin a bhí sé sa rang bailé do dhaoine fásta ar fhreastail mé air. Ní raibh tada scanrúil faoi (seachas féachaint orm féin sa scáthán ag iarraidh fanacht i mo sheasamh go grástúil, lámha in airde agus cos amháin san aer). Rinne mé leibhéal tosaitheoirí/feabhsaitheoirí le Ballet Áthas, i dTír Oileáin, i lár na cathrach. Chuir Sharon fáilte romham chuig an stiúideo deas mór. Ní fhaca mé a leithéid de mhúinteoir riamhó thaobh misneach a thabhairt dá daltaí. Bhí sí cruinn ár stiúradh, séimh ár
gceartú agus flaithiúil ár moladh. Mná a bhí sna daltaí eile, cé go ndeirtear liom go mbíonn corr-fhear ag damhsa sa scoil freisin (is ea, Éireannaigh!). Ba léir go ndearna roinnt acu bailé cheana, ach tosaitheoirí ar nós mé féin roinnt acu freisin. Tosaíonn an rang ag an mbarra, mar sin tosaítear le fíorghluaiseachtaí bailé láithreach; demi plié, crom ar an taobh, ardaigh, grand plié. Tá an-chuid athdhéanamh ann, mar sin is éasca foghlaim. Rinneamar cuid mhaith ag an mbarra agus ansin isteach linn chuig lár an stiúideo. Rinneamar port de bras, nó gluaiseacht na lámh. Bhí sé sách deacair an dá lámh a choinneáil ag imeacht an t-am ar fad agus cuma ghrástúil a chur orthu, ach mhothaigh mé i mo bhailairíne ceart! Ansin rinneamar cuid de chóiréagrafaíocht as Cinderella, a bheidh ar an stáitse sa Taibhdhearc an 29 agus an 30 Samhain. Píosa álainn a bhí ann - le ceol iontach. Bhí orainn ‘aisteoireacht’
a dhéanamh freisin le Cinderella a thaispeáint ag athrú ó chailín aimsire go dtí damhsóir cumasach. An-spraoi. Chríochnaigh an rang go traidisiúnta leis an révérance; umhlú lena nglacann damhsóirí ar stáitse buíochas leis an lucht féachana. Bealach deas é le meas a léiriú dá chéile théis rang bailé. Buntáiste mór nach raibh súil agam leis ná an easpa péine i mo dhroim - a bhí ag cur isteach orm le fada - an mhaidin dar gcionn. Luíonn sé le réasún - staidiúir mhaith atá sa bhailé agus sílim gur chabhraigh an t-ailíniú leanúnach a rinne mé ar mo dhroim agus mo chromáin, chomh maith leis an gcromadh siar is an síneadh amach, le míchothromaíocht a bhí orm, dar le mo physio, a chur ina ceart. Tá an-chion agam ar an mbailé dá bharr sin! Alovelyclass.com ainm láithreán gréasáin Sharon, agus sin a bhí agam: rang álainn.
