Standard Meetings From 1:30 to 3:00 pm, once a month, the youth gather in Seton Hall to pray the Rosary, then they par-ticipate in a discussion given by one of the adults from the parish about a deep theological truth. Plan-ning fundraisers and discussing upcoming opportunities to support the Church and raise money for trips to a variety of youth conferences.
Funday Sunday Activity Afternoon From 1:30 to 4:30 pm, once a month the youth gather either in Seton or St. Jude Hall to enjoy pizza and a movie, with a discussion to follow. Then, time permitting, play board games or participate in an outdoor activity until the end of the gathering.

The Collect for the Twelfth Sunday after Trinity
This Sunday’s Collect is a little masterpiece. It is both a richly insightful treatise on the nature of grace and a good illustration of the organic development and incremental enrichment of liturgical texts over the centuries:
ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve: pour down upon us the abundance of thy mercy; for-giving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord.
In its original form this oration first appeared in the oldest of the sacramentaries, the Leonine, dating back to the fifth century. Slightly revised, the Latin prayer passed into the Gelasian and then the Gregorian sacramentaries before coming to the medieval Sarum Missal: Omnipotens sempiterne Deus, qui abundantia pietatis tuae et merita supplicum excedis et vota, effunde super nos misericordiam tuam, ut dimittas quae conscientia metuit, et adjicias quod oratio non praesumit. (“Almighty and everlasting God, who in the abundance of thy mercy art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve; pour down upon us thy mercy; forgiving us those things whereof our conscience is afraid, and giving us those things which we are not worthy to ask.”)
Translating the collect for the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, Thomas Cranmer adhered closely to the sense of the Latin while rounding out the attribute of God, “who art always more ready to hear than we to pray,” and consoli-dating the phrase referring to the “abundance” of God's mercy in the petition. For the 1662 edition of the Prayer Book, John Cosin further enriched and perfected the prayer by adding a distinctively Christological emphasis to the final pleading: “. . . giving us those good things which we are not worthy to ask, but through the merits and medi-ation of Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord.”
Acquiring layer upon layer of biblical allusiveness over the ages, this collect elegantly distils the Christian doctrine of grace: though we be slack and timid in prayer, anxious and unworthy as we are, the super-abundance of God's mercy, vouchsafed by the Spirit in conscience, in the water of baptism, and in the blood of Jesus on the cross, lets loose a shower of goodness beyond our imagining. Dr. Clint Brand

Psalms: The School of Prayer
We hear the Psalms read or sung at every Mass between the first and second read-ings, but do we understand their signifi-cance? The Psalms are the heart of the Bible. They are prayers from God that help us to pray. These sacred hymns be-come our heartfelt response to God’s lov-ing and wondrous deeds for us. Their words captivate the imagination and draw us into a deeply personal encounter with God.
Join the Thursday afternoon bible study group as we study Psalms: The School of Prayer beginning September 6 from 1 pm to 3 pm in Seton Hall. Psalm study will take place for 11 weeks. For more information or to register for the study, call Mona Diaz at 713-569-2829 or email: [email protected].
