Coffee MorningSeniors Week 2018

12/10/18The October Coffee Morning was held immediately after our well attended Special Meeting and many of our members stayed on to welcome the dozens of local Seniors who had come to hear what the AW-U3A was all about, enticed perhaps by the publicity generated by Seniors Week. This meant that it was standing room only for the late comers at the most well attended Coffee Morning in my experience.Peter Massey, a fellow Committee member, prepared an excellent slide presentation which I had the honour of delivering. Peter outlined the history of the U3A from its beginnings in France in the 1980’s, rapidly spreading globally, and reaching Albury Wodonga in 1992 with an agreement with the AWCC (Albury Wodonga Community Centre). From relatively humble beginnings our membership is now about 350, part of the 109 U3A’s in Victoria with a combined total of about 37,000 memberships. No-one within the U3A network is paid. Even our hardworking tutors and presenters have to fork out membership fees as do all the other members who contribute their time and effort. The slide presentation then ran through a sample of all the courses currently offered: the ‘academic’ ones like philosophy, history and economics, to the more social ones like Scrabble, Mah-Jong and Cryptic Crosswords. The importance of social interaction was stressed with slightly less competitive classes l ike Ar ts Appreciat ion, Music, even Community Sing-a-Longs. Friendships are also developed within classes like the Gardening Group or the Sewing Group. In their own way each group provides lifelong learning and social connection to seniors who are retired or semi-retired without the hassle of exams, homework or Hecs debts.

Our U3A is relatively unknown within the general community and this opportunity to inform our fellow seniors of what we offer was welcomed both by us and the many visitors who attended the Coffee Morning. I know of quite a few of those visitors who will, I am sure, be welcomed into our classes next year.John McLennan(A Border Mail article about this event is on the last page)

November Coffee Morning

JOY SLOANThe trip of a lifetime:

Horse Trekking in Mongolia

I am a North East girl who grew up on a family farm near Euroa, and interestingly, my high school education was overseen by Mr Edward Voogt!

Our resident philosopher

Travel, community education, environmental management and horse riding are my key passions, along with taking on new and interesting challenges as they arrive.

I have always had a fascination with an imals ,agr icu l ture and the natura l environment.

Upon leaving high school I was fortunate to gain a position as Animal keeper at Healesville Sanctuary and from there joined Forest Commission of Victoria working in the field of ecological research – primarily l o o k i n g a t t h e i m p a c t s o f f o r e s t “management” on ecosystem health.

Government restructuring ended this idyllic job, and I moved to Wodonga to take up the pos i t i on o f F i she r i es and W i l d l i f e Managemen t O f fice r w i t h t he new Department of Conservation Forests and Lands, which is now known as DEJTR and DELWP, where I remained for the next 30 yrs. I was privileged to be able to travel and work across Northern Victoria and was involved in some amazing environmental management programs. A key highlight was the successful translocation of native fish f r o m L a k e M o k o a n w h e n i t w a s decommissioned in 2009/2010, to date the largest such activity in Australia. I also had the privilege of lecturing for Charles Sturt University when it first moved campus to Albury and for the National Environment Centre – Albury for 10 yrs.

In 2000, I became a charter member of Fight the Fruit Fly Albury Wodonga, a community group committed to educating the local community on how to control QFF in their backyards. This group was a first in Australia and up until about 3 years ago, was the only formal community group committed to controlling QFF in Australia and Victoria. The education model developed by FFFAW has been used by many other groups in the past 3 years to assist communities to take ownership of QFF management.

A note about drinks

As you may already know we are not allowed to have drinks in rooms unless they are in cups with lids.

We have also been told that no drinks or food can be consumed in Room 9 so the November coffee morning will start at 10:00am in the kitchen area near Reception followed by the talk in Room 9.

He said: 'Oh, the same old thing. You know I never have a good time when you're not there.' - 'Did you dance much ?' - 'I'll tell you, I never even danced one dance. When I got there, I met Pete , Bill Brown and some other guys and we went into the den and played poker all evening. But you're not going to believe what happened to the guy I loaned my costume to!

Laughter is the Best Medicine

The Costume Party

A couple was invited to a swanky costume party. The wife got a terrible headache and told her husband to go to the party alone.

He being a devoted husband protested, but she argued and said she was going to take some aspirin and go to bed and there was no need for his good time being spoiled by not going. So he took his costume and away he went.

The wife, after sleeping soundly for about an hour, awakened without pain and, as it was still early, decided to go the party. Since her husband did not know what her costume was, she thought she would have some fun by watching her husband to see how he acted when she was not with him. She joined the party and soon spotted her husband cavorting around on the dance floor, dancing with every nice looking woman he could, and copping a little feel here and a little kiss there.

His wife sidled up to him and being a rather seductive babe herself, he left his current partner high and dry and devoted his time to the new babe that had just arrived. She let him go as far as he wished, naturally, since he was her husband. Finally, he whispered a little proposition in her ear and she agreed.

So off they went to one of the cars and had a quickie. Just before unmasking at midnight , she slipped away, went home, put the costume away and got into bed, wondering what kind of explanation he would make for his behaviour. She was sitting up reading when he came in, and she asked what kind of a time he had..

Housekeeping Matters

If you are going to be absent or late (if this affects the class activity) please use one of the following means to let us know:

• Inform your coordinator• ask a classmate to do this for you• contact a committee member at the U3A

office or ring them on one of the numbers shown in a recent email

• Do NOT go to the AWCC office to do this

Similarly the preferred line of communication with U3A is one of these:

• The U3A office in the Cracknell building at hours to be advised

• Leaving a note in the box just outside the U3A office

• Ringing a committee member• The U3A email at the beginning of this

newsletter• NOT the AWCC office

physician’s comment was I must have a powerful immune system that had decided to kick in!Sai Baba tells us that this planet is entering a n e w E n e r g y a n d a n e w l e v e l o f Consciousness, and humanity must be ready for it. This evolution into a higher state is the purpose of His Incarnation, so as to reveal, to inspire. Whichever way one examines world affairs, one can see that a new humanity is emerging. It will come to pass.

After this period I was also engaged in many healing modalities including becoming a Reiki Master. Also, being the first Chairperson for the Sathya Sai Organization in this area, apart from co-ordinating various service activities in the community, I was involved in the first ‘Unity of Faiths Forum’ at Charles Sturt University approx.25 years ago. Human Values is the basis and imperative spiritual structure of the organization, not a religion, but are universal laws that man must obey.

Our November Featured Course:Dying to Know

My name is Lynette McAuliffe and I am a current member, tutor or facilitator at U3A. Some readers may recognize my face as I have been in this area for about fifty years in various places in the community where I have held Office Managerial positions: NRMA Insurance and Finance, ADAGE Credit Union, Accountant and Office Manager at Lake Hume Resort, and part-time teaching at the Wodonga CEC, and TAFE – Bookkeeping for Small Business and Accounting Principles respectively. Eventually I decided to branch out on my own as ‘Enterprise Bookkeeping’ where I worked for various business establishments in this area.Apart from leading a fairly normal existence in the role of a mother of two sons, at about the age of 45 years my life changed dramatically. I was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and operated on but it appeared that the cancer had travelled to my lymph glands. I had been informed about an Avatar in India, a Divine Healer capable of miracles that were a total violation to the laws of nature. His name was Sathya Sai Baba. I read everything that I could about him, written by westerners. I realised I had nothing to lose and everything to gain and made the decision to check him out for myself! I would not be disappointed! At his Ashram in Whitefield, India, I lined up with many thousands of people in ‘darshan’ rows, to not only listen to His Vedic Ancient Wisdom teachings on Human Values but to hopefully receive healing. He stopped and stood in front of me. In His presence, I felt a very bewildering and strange sensation like my body was engulfed in a magnetic or electric current. The result, when I came back to Australia I was assessed again and the diagnosis from further tests proved to be negative. clients back into the Spirit World. He has been recognised internationally for his outstanding pioneering contribution to society for giving the world detailed information and knowledge on this engaging and interesting subject about our universe, not previously available. He has also trained many other professional people in these unparalleled techniques.

I so look forward to our weekly sessions with Lyn to work our way through ‘Journey of Souls’. Meeting with other like-minded members who are willing to question and share makes the class both serious and fun. The format of the sessions is such that we are all involved and Lyn is a great faci l i tator who is widely read and knowledgeable in our areas of study and willingly shares this with the group. The sessions also work because Lyn is genuine, passionate, patient, respectful and always encourages questions and discussion.Di Fontana

I look forward to Lyn’s course each Monday. Her passion and her subject knowledge is infectious. I love that we can choose a particular topic and explore without judgement. I also love that our diverse group can bring new ideas which

These values start in the home, then into schools, and then into the community. I moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2007 to live with my eldest son. I took a position in the role of Human Relations Manager for the Ryan Group, a subsidiary company that owned 13 Hotels throughout Queensland where I was responsible for timely payment of wages to approx. 400 people and all other associated duties.I helped my eldest son establish a business in 2008, not an opportune time because of the World Financial Crisis. Unfortunately, I lost all my savings and my home at that time. Fortunately however the outcome was that his business has grown steadily and is prosperous today!I moved back to this area in 2011 because my youngest son and his wife needed help with the caring of their newborn, my first grandson. They were establishing a business whereby both of them worked in the ceramic tiling industry and they have since progressed to owning and supplying tiles through their business. They added another boy to their family, so I am now a proud grandmother of two grandsons, who are a continual source of joy for me.Since then my interest, in practising meditation and study of human values has contributed to my overall well-being, happiness and blissful contentment, and in turn has developed my passion and enthusiasm for sharing all this knowledge and wisdom gained for the welfare of others in our community.C u r r e n t l y I t u t o r o r f a c i l i t a t e f o r free; :Meditation, Teach yourself Human Values, The Spirit Realm, Numerology.Presently at U3A the current topic I facilitate as a Discussion Group is about the Spirit Realm ‘Dying to know’.Based on the work and books of Dr. Michael Newton. Fund Raising 2018

Thanks to the generosity of many U3A members we were able to achieve a total of

$5050.55 by the end of August.

This will go a long way to addressing the shortfall caused by the end of traditional

grants to U3A
