Heather with Happenings

Hi Everyone, Wow, what a summer. Hopefully autumn will bring us some relief from the hot days and warm nights. I hope you had a lovely time over Christmas and New Year with family and friends. AWBCSG’s year ended with our Christmas Lunch at the Commercial Club. Everyone who attended had a lovely time chatting and enjoying the delicious food. Once again the tables were beautifully set, making for a very festive day. Thank you to Hart Accounting for their donation towards our celebration.

Hydrotherapy success– The ladies from our support group who go to hydrotherapy sessions with WAGS at the Hospital Pool were delight that the pool finally reopened just before Christmas. We have kept our Wednesday 12.30pm session facilitated by WAGS with other WAGS members coming along too which is great. Several of the ladies attend other WAGS run sessions during the week. There is Monday and Tuesday at 1.30pm, Thursday 9am and 9.45am and Friday 9.15am. To attend WAGS sessions you will require a medical clearance signed by your GP, pay a small annual fee and $6 for each session you attend. During the closure of the Hospital Pool we decided to make other arrangements and attended GT Aquatics which worked very well. It has been decided that a session will be held on Tuesday at 11am at GT Aquatics 345 Wagga Road Lavington. To attend this session you just need to turn up and pay the $6 entry ($5 concession). You can also come before or stay longer and swim laps. There is no requirement to have a clearance signed by your GP or pay an annual fee. The closure of the pool made us realise how much benefit we get from hydrotherapy and are thrilled to be able to continue with more options. If you want to know more, or get a form contact, Joan on 6021 2396 or 0407 397 391.

WAGS facilitating sessions that AWBCSG members attend You will require a medical permission form signed by your doctor, pay an annual fee to WAGS and the weekly fee to the hospital. AWBCSG members also attend hydro sessions, that they facilitate themselves, at GT Aquatics at 345 Wagga Road Lavington. There is only a weekly fee with no forms required. Contact Joan on 6021 2396 or 0407 397 391 for more information and times for both GT Aquatics and Albury Base Hospital.

H ydrotherapy is held at the Albury Base Hospital with

REMINDER– Date Change April meeting is on second

Friday which is 12th April due to Good Friday on 19th April.

Congratulations to our wonderful friend Rosemary Creed for being named Albury City Volunteer of the year. Rosemary has been the co-ordinator of Look Good Feel Better for 13 years. Rosemary and her Team have been amazing

in making you feel special and lift your self-esteem, so you leave the workshop with a lighter step and in a better frame of mind. Thank you Rosemary from the AWBCSG and all the ladies you have helped over the years. We were fortunate to receive a donation of 80 calico bags from Norma, one of our members, to use for our Pamper Bag Project. A big thank you to the members that have been busy decorating the bags and making them colourful. They look very bright. Last year the McGrath nurses distributed 130 bags to women in our area diagnosed with breast cancer and the 8th edition of our resource guide has just been printed. We also appreciate the help the Craft Group at Hilltop provide in sewing up the half moon pillows we put in the pamper bags. May is once again a busy month with the Pink Bun Campaign commencing 2nd May and continuing until 29 May, which is a week longer than previous years. In the first 2 weeks 100% of the sales of pink buns comes to BCNA. In the second 2 weeks BCNA receives $1 from the sale of every 6 bag of healthy rolls. There is a new co- branded Breast Friends hessian bag with BCNA receiving a percentage of the sales. BCNA are l o o k i n g forward to the new campaign, with all funds raised put towards the My Journey Kit which is made available to all men and women when diagnosed with breast cancer. The NBCF Mother’s Day Classic is another annual fundraiser with the funds going towards breast cancer research. Finally, our May meeting is always our Biggest Morning Tea and are able to support one of these fundraisers. Until the next edition, enjoy Autumn and the colour it brings. Cheers,

Heather Knott

Once again the annual Pink Test in Sydney has been a successful fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation. Over $1.2 million was

raised which helps fund nine McGrath Breast Care Nurses for a year. Ten years on and still going strong. In 2009, when the Pink

Test started, there were 56 McGrath Nurses supporting around 1,500 families. The Foundation has proudly supported more than 67,000 families since 2005 and now have 120 McGrath Breast Care Nurses all around Australia.

At the Pink Test Prime Minister Scott Morrison used the occasion to announce $27 million in funding to support 41 breast cancer

care nurses, which is the McGrath Foundation's primary aim. Money raised from the Test and the $27 million of federal

government funding will increase the number of McGrath Foundation nurses to 161 and there are hopes that the figure will double

in the next five or six years. Of these nurses, 30 will be dedicated to supporting metastatic breast cancer patients. The Government currently funds 57 nurses with donations paying for the rest.

Our local McGrath Nurses Gabi and Jude are available at any stage of your

breast cancer journey for guidance, information or support. To make contact with

Gabi ring 0428 022 844 or 6064 1544 or with Jude 0428 284 642 or 6022 8841

The Albury Wodonga Breast Cancer Support Group appreciates the support Gabi and Jude provide and thank them for giving out our Pamper Bags.

There is also a Breast Care Telephone Support Service provided by the

McGrath Foundation. You can contact Pip Tuesday to Thursday 9-5 on 1800 183 338

to leave a message for her to get back to you. Alternatively send an email if it isn’t

urgent to [email protected]. Pip has been a MBCN since 2011. She is also a back up when a MBCN is away on leave. How lucky we are to have such great

support on our breast cancer journey all thanks to Jane McGrath.

BRAVE HEARTS NEWS

Sunday 11th November Brave Hearts Dragon Boat Club

held their 11th Community Regatta.

The day began with the traditional

blessing of the boats and waking of

the dragon. The racing was paused

at 11am with an Armistice Ceremony taking place. Racing continued for the 11 teams making up Social, Premier and

Junior categories as well as Survivors and Supporters Races. The results were:- Social– Flex Out Physiotherapy,

Premier– Wills Family & Friends, Junior– Api Naga/Beechworth SC, Survivors & Supporters Race- Brave Hearts DBC.

There was a marquee for BHMInc members and past DBC members who enjoyed the day of racing and the special

Remembrance Ceremony, Hearts on the Water and guard of honour to complete the regatta.

Saturday 1st December After training a presentation of 22 junior sized PDF’s was made by Wodonga Central

Rotary Club member Clive Faul for our junior members to wear when paddling. Our

junior crew is growing and we are thankful for this donation which provides jackets

that fit well allowing them to paddle in safety and comfort. As mention previously 3

juniors- Ella, Charlotte and Matt are off to Thailand in August next year as members

of the Australian Under v18’s Auroras Team to compete at the World Championships.

Leisure cruising is on every Sunday unless there is a regatta. With the warmer weather it is a late afternoon start

but will change to earlier in the afternoon as the weather cools. For more information phone Julie 0408 282 113

Saturday 8th December The last regatta for the year was at Carrum with a 45 races program.

Research: ‘Lab in a drop’ reveals your risk Aussie scientists have developed a test that reveals your risk of such diseases as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s, in a breakthrough expected to be available to patients as early as 2019. The rapid test would even show patients how a month at the gym, a better diet or laying off the booze can change your genetic makeup by switching off illness-causing genes and switching on good ones. The test, dubbed a “laboratory in a drop”, uses urine, sputum or blood to screen for genes known to cause diseases. The scientists hope to make it affordable, so that one day it could be sold in pharmacies. Herald Sun 19 July 2018

Obesity, Nutrition, and Physical Activity: Diet could cut breast cancer risk A diet of fish, vegetables and olive oil could decrease the risk of breast cancer. Macaque monkeys that were fed a Mediterranean diet had healthier breast tissue than those that ate high-fat and highly-processed diets, US scientists have found. After 31 months, the breast tissue of Mediterranean diet monkeys contained 10 times more lactobacillus, a good bacteria that is often added to probiotics and is shown to decrease tumour growth. Wake Forest School of Medicine study author Katherine Cook said it was previously unknown what possible factors could change the breast tissue microbiome. Herald Sun 4 October 2018

Research: Rub-on gel for cancer A gel rubbed onto the skin every day could slash the risk of breast cancer. The clear and odorless gel contains a form of the anti-cancer drug tamoxifen, which has been used for years to treat women with the disease by reducing levels of the hormone oestrogen, which can help some cancers grow. Scientists are carrying out a trial with healthy women to see if a gel containing the drug could prevent cancer in the first place. The theory is the gel will reduce breast density and slow down the rate at which healthy breast cells grow, because it will starve them of oestogen. A man and a woman

who had never met were

sharing a sleeping

compartment on a train.

The man was on the top

bunk and the woman on

the bottom bunk.

During the night, the

man woke and said:

“Sorry to bother you, but

would you reach into the

cupboard to get me a

blanket- I’m freezing.”

“I’ve a better idea,” she

replied. “Why don’t we

pretend we are married?”

“Wow, what a good

idea!” he said. “Good,”

she said. “Get your own

blanket yourself, you

lazy sod!”
