Café Provençal located onthe grounds of the picturesqueWilliamsburg Winery offerspeople a chance to experiencefine dining in a relaxed andtranquil setting.

The superb quality of the food com-bined with amazing service makes for atruly memorable experience. The restau-rant is proudly owned by the DuffelerFamily and has enjoyed continued popu-larity since opening in 2007.

Chef Tim Westby-Gibson studies theculinary industry and incorporates hisresearch in the design, creativeness andstructure in every dish. He prepares eachselection using fresh local and qualityingredients making every main dish theperfect combination.

The signature dishes incorporate spe-cial meats that are slowly smoked usingcured grape vines following the tradition-al southern France style of cooking.

Daily specials reflect creative talent, careful preparations and a masterful pres-entation.

The restaurant can also boast one ofthe largest Virginia Wine lists in the stateand also has a great selection of nationaland international wine to choose from.

Locals who appreciate food and wine,as well as the many visitors who vacationin Williamsburg, have found the fine, fresh cuisine of Café Provençal distinct inits quality and service.

A recent visitor to the restaurant ravedabout the experience they had at CaféProvençal.

“It exceeded our expectations. I wishwe lived closer. We would be here once amonth at least to take advantage of thefood. And not only was the food wonder-ful, but the service was attentive yet notintrusive. Highly recommend to city peo-ple who weren’t expecting such a greatfind in Williamsburg.”

Another customer called CaféProvençal “One of the best kept secrets inWilliamsburg.”

One couple thought the value wasexceptional and the food unparalleled.

“The prix-fixe menu was an excellentvalue, as was the “glass of reserve winepaired with each course” offer. I had thecrab bisque, filet mignon, and fudge tortewith home-made banana ice cream. Myhusband had the smoked duck, filetmignon, and the chocolate tiramisu trifle.Everything was delicious, but the filetmignon and banana ice cream werebeyond amazing.”

The vegetables and herbs used in ChefWestby-Gibson’s recipes are grown onproperty’s two-acre garden. Everything ismade from scratch, including all the

stocks for sauces and soups. New this sea-son is a greenhouse garden tunnel whichwill allow growing all year long. By thetime summer arrives, the garden will co-op with other local restaurants to supplyfresh vegetables and herbs all year.

Wine educator Kevin Zraly has saidthat Virginia is an exciting wine region, producing some amazing wines. TheWilliamsburg Winery vintages have woninternational awards with “DecanterMagazine” of London, four years in arow.

It’s no wonder locals and visitors havemade J.M. Randalls one of their favoritedestinations to meet family and friends, bring a date or just kick back after a longday.

“J.M. Randall’s is very much likeCheers, the place where everybody knowsyour name,” said Randall Plaxa, whoowns the restaurant with his parents,Michael and Josephine. “That’s the beau-ty of it. We even remember our guestswho only visit once a year. They come inand they ask for their same table.”

“We have had local, regional, nationaland international talent on our stage,”Plaxa said. “We have great music here.”

But music isn’t the only draw. A new, expansive menu and wine list has beengetting rave reviews from regulars andnewcomers. A variety of “comfort food,”quick snacks, sandwiches, soups and sal-ads are available for breakfast, lunch anddinner.

And if you are looking for somethingtruly unique to eat, look no further thanJ.M. Randalls. That’s where you will finda variety of distinctive choices, includinghomemade pierogies (boiled or bakeddumpling-type dish.)

“We are the only place I know thatoffers pierogies and we have recentlyexpanded that part of the menu,” Plaxasaid. “They are such a novelty.”

There are times when pullingtogether a meal at home isn’t in thecards; and finding time to cook ameal and gather everyone around thetable is just too hard. The easiesttime-saving solution is going out toeat, but that too can seem dauntingwhen looking for a family meal thathas both good nutrition and comesat a reasonable cost. Not to fear, menus and prices are changing.

Greater emphasis has been placed oneating fresh, and, when possible, localfoods in recent years. And, as the demandfor healthier menu options has grownacross a wider audience, more restaurantsat a variety of price points have respondedby offering foods made with fresh ingre-dients, at prices that won’t hurt the familybudget.

This trend also means that consumershave to be savvy about where - and what- they’re eating. What’s presented ashealthy isn’t always the best choice. Thebest defense here is a good offense.Becoming informed about the dishesyou’re likely to pick and the restaurantsyou frequently visit will allow you tomake the right choices.

There are a few key things to look forwhen taking the family out for a meal:

• Fresh ingredients. These can be par-ticularly hard to come by in a restaurantsetting, so it’s good to find restaurantsthat have a mission to serve fresh foods. Some restaurants make the effort toensure that the food they offer on theirsalad bar and the ingredients in theirfreshly prepared foods come straight fromthe farm to the restaurant kitchen, with

as little transit time as possible inbetween. That means that the food notonly tastes better, it’s also in optimal con-dition for healthy eating.

• A wide variety of options. Familieshave to cater to a lot of very differenttaste preferences, which can make diningout a challenge. And we all know it canbe a challenge to get kids to choosehealthy foods over junk food. By goingout together to a restaurant that has abuffet format coupled with freshly-madewholesome foods, you’ll be able to leteveryone pick out what’s to their tastewith the peace of mind that they’re eatingwell.

• Know nutrition. Make it a point totalk to your family about healthy ingredi-ents and how they make a difference intheir lives. It’s also useful to explain calo-ries - how many go into a healthy diet, what’s too little and what’s too much -

and give kids examples of how manycalories are in a variety of prepared foods. Some restaurant websites make it easy tofind out exactly what the nutritional val-ues are in each item they serve. Having arealistic view of what goes into the foodyou eat plays a big role in making healthychoices when eating out.

By knowing what to look for, it’ easierto make smart choices at restaurants thatare wallet-friendly, disproving the myththat it costs a lot to eat the healthiestfoods. And when you find a place thatmeets the requirements of healthy, afford-able and fresh, spread the word to friends.Whether you go out on a multi-familylunch date or give restaurant gift cards, you'll be sharing smart ways to stayhealthy with your family and friends.
