D ear Bishop Gorman Alumni:

We are continuing to develop and enhance the educational experience of our students with the goal of preparing them for college and their life journey. As an important part of the Bishop Gorman family we would like to share with you just some of our recent initiatives relating to new programs and facilities to accomplish this goal.

• Construction continues on the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto (just north of the Chapel) which will be dedicated in January. The Grotto will enhance the spiritual life on campus, providing our students and extended community a special place to pause, reflect, and pray in a peaceful and contemplative environment.• The Fertitta Athletic Training Center is under construction and will be completed by June 2012. This facility will provide strength conditioning and agility training for our student-athletes, as well as supervised fitness instruction for all students and faculty in the late afternoon, evenings and on Saturdays. The second floor of this facility will include a reception center, accommodating 450 people, with a commercial kitchen. • We are encouraged by the generosity of some of our major benefactors which should permit us to begin the first phase of our north expansion in May 2012. The first phase will include expansion of the student commons (providing seating for 750 students, thereby limiting the need for more than two lunch periods); construction of two lecture halls, ten classrooms, two science labs and two computer labs (allowing us to increase enrollment to 1,500 students, thereby providing a quality Catholic college preparatory education to an increased number of qualified students); development of a landscaped quadrangle (offering a comfortable environment for students to gather, share experiences and ideas) and construction of a lighted practice field and additional student parking. These facilities should be completed by August 2013.• Shortly, we will be announcing a $500,000 foundation grant, funded over five years, to provide for technological advancements on campus necessary to ensure that our students are well prepared to be successful in a digital environment.• On December 1, 2011 we closed on the refinancing of $25 million of expensive or short-term obligations relating to the original development of our campus. This refinancing improves the financial condition of our school and represents a successful step in the long-term strategic plan to ensure the financial viability of Bishop Gorman for years to come.

Be assured that the traditions and legacy of Bishop Gorman High School continue through our students, even as we enhance their high school experience. We thank you for your continued support over the years and hope that the year 2012 holds blessings and exciting possibilities for you and your families.

Respectfully,

John A. Kilduff President

An Annual Service Tradition Starts on Campus

Fall Alumni & Family Service DayOn Saturday, September 10th over 100 volunteers gathered to paint, build, organize, and play at the TRENDZ Youth Center in downtown Las Vegas. Local children come to the center every day for homework help, guidance, and fun from Michael Flores ’06. With some sunny murals and colorful planted flower boxes, the volunteers brightened

the future for TRENDZ!

Thank you to our sponsor James McGaughey ’89 and all those who generously donated their time and resources to the TRENDZ Youth Center, Margaret Moore-Larsen ’80, Bob Mulroy ’65, the Wasserkrug family, and Colette Moore.

Just before the winter break, students, parents, Alumni, and friends gathered on campus in the Tiberti Commons to give some Holiday Hope to the greater Las Vegas community. Gaels Give HOPE (Helping Out People Everywhere), a new service tradition here at BGHS, helped out over 10 local non-profits to make the Holidays a little brighter for those they serve. Ornaments were decorated for Catholic Charities, school supplies bags were organized for Catholic elementary schools in need, fleece blankets were made for dog shelters and the Las Vegas Rescue Mission,

just to name a few! As the event came to an end, it was easy to see what a big difference Bishop Gorman can make when we come together as a community!

Thank you to all of our volunteers and donors, especially Bon Breads, Farmers Brothers Coffee, the Wasserkrug family, the BGHS Cheerleading Teams, the Bombard family, the Hale family, and so many more!

In Our PrayersBrady Caipa '12 went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2011. Brady is missed and loved by so many in the Bishop Gorman community, but especially by his family; parents: Carlos '84 & Kimberly, siblings: Brytani, Zachary, Nicolas, Royce, as well as by his grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and his beloved chocolate lab, Sadie.

“The Caipa family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude for your genuine love, comfort, and prayers during this difficult time.

The motto “Once a Gael, Always a Gael” holds a true meaning for us. As a Gorman alum, Carlos has always been proud of his alma mater, and was thrilled when Brady wanted to follow in his footsteps. Carrying on the Gorman tradition was important to Brady. Attending Gorman, where his Catholic faith could be practiced, was also a priority to him. He demonstrated his faith by helping others through tough times, looking out for those in need and most of all, by his unique gift of making everyone feel special. Brady felt privileged and humbled to attend Gorman. He was an ardent defender of Gorman and truly loved his fellow students. Being embraced by the Gorman community this past month has added a whole new dimension to our pride in being a member of this extraordinary BGHS family.” -The Caipa Family

Jerry Lovell '76, beloved brother passed away July 4th, 2011. A Mason for 35 years, he loved his family and friends and enjoyed motorcycle riding. He loved the Lord. Jerry is survived by his wife and son, and will be dearly missed.
