Patriotism, love, and loyal or zealous support of one’s own country runs deep at St. Peter. The evidence for this is the list of veterans, living or dead, who are remembered and celebrated on Memorial Day and Fourth of July. If you are one of these veterans, I thank you for being willing to defend our country.

There is another list in the Lamb’s Book Of Life. Through faith, trust in Jesus Christ, your

name is listed there, veteran or not. Love and loyal or zealous support of our God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is the way that we show appreciation for all that God has done for us. God’s truth is marching on at St. Peter Lutheran Church.

SPYSt. Peter Youth

Eleven members of St. Peter’s youth group (SPY) enjoyed a week of Bible studies, devotions, swimming, eating, roller coaster rides and lots of time together June 5-11, 2011, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. All the youth and advisors thank St. Peter for making this trip possible.

CONGRATULATIONS to Calvin and Teresa Lake on the birth of their daughter, Mallory Elizabeth Lake, on June 14, 2011.

Lest we forget….

That God gave his only son that we might have eternal life;That Jesus sacrificed his life to wipe away our sins;That our ancestors, predominately from Europe, in many cases sold all they had and often indentured themselves and their children to come to a new land;That countless men gave their lives to fight oppression;That all of these gave us a new chance for freedom.

As I read the newly compiled history of St. Peter I made some discoveries of my own. That the highly respected Rev. Godfrey Dreher whose journals I have been studying, pulled out of the SC Synod in the 1800’s and that St. Peter went with him as did other churches. I am certainly not trying to influence anyone’s decision of what we should, could, or might do. My angle is this: St. Peter has been through this very thing before and we still stand strong in the faith. As the church lives on, this will most certainly NOT be the last time we have to take a stand either way. We are called to take that very stand every day of our lives—do we serve Christ first and foremost? Do we still uphold the doctrines we believe in, either way?

Our ancestors put extreme importance on the respect and worship of their creator. When they worshiped it was often a day- long affair since traveling took more time in those days. Can we match the stalwart faith of our fathers? Can we worship with such zeal as they did? Is the freedom to worship as cherished by us as it was to them? The immigrants who settled the Dutch Fork were a hardy lot and persevered through many hard times. The majority of you, like me, have ties to ALL the Lutheran churches in the Dutch Fork because the early families inter-married with each other. There are strong ties of faith and blood among the believers in the Chapin area. It is time to reflect on what made these people so faithful and so dedicated to their God. We all should examine the memories we have of old churches and worship events in days gone by. They might just be the answer to some of the questions that arise in this world. They just might give us great insight into our calling. We just might find that commitment to worship, servitude and the spreading of the Gospel was a given and NOT a choice.

One of the discoveries I made was in the miscellaneous portion of the church records. John Eargle married Rebecca Shaffer at Pineywoods and their son George Michael was baptized here. These people were my 5th and 4th great-grandparents. I just always assumed they were always living in the Peak area. My grandmother, Marie Antoinette Koon, grew up in this church and I never knew it until I started my search. It just goes to show that we don’t always know as much about our relatives as we think. But we DO remember the ones who inspired us to live a Christian life. We DO remember the Sunday School teachers who opened the scriptures to us. Lest we forget? No, let us remember!

Christian Education Ministry News & Upcoming Events

Vacation Bible School. June 26 - July 1, 2011 “Shake It Up” at the “Shake It Up Cafe”.As you read this newsletter it is possible we are in our 2011 VBS. I give thanks to God for the planning and other preparations of our Christian Education Committee members, the VBS leaders, and those who supplied materials and food for this week of Christian Education learning and fun. Vacation Bible School is truly a congregation-wide event, not just a ministry event of and led by the Christian Education Committee. It must be a congregation-wide event as it is the largest single ministry event at St. Peter, based on the number of adults, youth, and children who participate in it, and the number of hours they are involved. If we are in VBS week and you are not participating in it, I encourage you to stop by and see the learning, excitement, and fun of this week.

Sunday School Rally Day 2011. August 28. The theme for Rally Day will be “Give Happily”, a social ministry / social mission concerns theme. We will provide collection boxes to the Sunday School students 4 weeks ahead of 8-28-11, on 7-31. Different charities will be assigned to each Sunday School class. In preparation for this fall’s semester the plan is for each Sunday school classroom room to be painted over the summer after VBS.

Children’s Worship Bags. I am downloading a new children's worship bulletin each week and placing it in the children’s worship bags located on the “tree” at the entrance to the sanctuary.  Each children’s bulletin will focus on the theme of that Sunday in the readings.  The Christian Education Committee also decided to have the bags washed or disinfected each month.

What’s Happening! July 2011

Golden Age Sunday will be on August 14, 2011, during our traditional service at 10:30 a.m. Please bring a covered dish and join us for a meal served after worship service to honor our Golden Agers.

The following are new Golden Agers for the year 2011: Melvin Abell, Christine Boland, Tommy Frick, Rose Metts, Retha Sease, Bernard Shealy, Carolyn Shealy, and Wendell Shealy. If there are others, please contact the church office, Peggy Cannon, or any member of the Golden Age Committee (printed in the yearbook).

Bulletin Deadline is Tuesday of each week.

Next Gazette Deadline is Sunday, July 17.

Alpha CircleThe Alpha Circle July meeting will be at the Heritage at Lowman on July 16 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. for bingo and sing-a-long.

CPR Class – Saturday, July 9th 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the

Fellowship Hall

Heart Saver & AED. There will be no test for this, just check offs for competency. This includes CPR for adults, children and infants. Instructors are Libby Lindler and Mary Wessinger. Wear comfortable clothing as you will be moving around. You may want to bring water to drink.

Limit 16 participants. Members of St. Peter will receive the BOOK and the CARD. The church will pay the costs of the program but not the cost of the individual face mask. We will have the disposable face shields available for those who do not want the real face mask ordered for them.

To sign up, call Nancy in the church office. Also indicate if you want the face mask ($9.00) which will be yours to keep. This can be used in a real incidence of using CPR with respirations.

Once the 16 slots are filled, a waiting list will be kept in case someone cancels; next person on the list will be notified of the availability.

The book, No Ordinary Lives … The Life and Times of Chapin Area World War II Veterans will be on sale July 9 & 16 at Crooked Creek Park. The book has over 500 pages and includes photographs of “old” Chapin and scenes from WWII. Price is $31. After expenses, proceeds will go to Chapin American Legion Post 193 for community projects. Edited by Col Tom Fincher, the book features several past and present members of our church: Darr Frick, Clyde Huffstetler, Harold Park, Bennie Sease and Al Widner.
