Lesson Objectives

• Students will be able to tell time utilizing Spanish words and phrases.

• Students will be able to show on their clocks the time that is being said in Spanish.

Applying Prior Knowledge

• When telling time you only need to know how to say numbers 1 through 29, plus a few more phrases.

La palabra “hora”

• When telling time, you must know how to say the word for hour, which is “hora.”

• The word “hora” is feminine in Spanish, so when we refer to it we will have to use the feminine words for “the” which are “la” or “las.”

• To say what time it is for every hour EXCEPT one o’clock, use:– Son las + hora

• Ejemplos: • Son las tres. (It is 3:00)• Son las seis. (It is 6:00)• Son las ocho. (It is 8:00)

What is the formula for telling time?

A. Que + estas + es

B. Estoy + bien + hora

Telling Time

• To say it is one o’clock, use:– Es la + una

• Ejemplo:• Es la una. (It is 1:00)

• Note: The only time you use “Es la” instead of “Son las,” is when you want to say it is one or one something.

• Ejemplos: 1:00, 1:10, 1:25, etc.

Telling Time

• To tell time after the hour, use the letter “y” which means “and,” then add the minutes to the end.

• Son las + hora + y + minutos– Ejemplos

• Son las siete y cinco. (It is 7:05)• Son las tres y diez. (It is 3:10)• Son las diez y veinticinco. (It is 10:25)• Es la una y veinte. (It is 1:20)

Telling Time

• Use the word “media” for half an hour.– Ejemplos:

• Son las cinco y media. (It is 5:30)• Son las once y media. (It is 11:30)• Son las dos y media. (It is 2:30)

• This also works the same way with “Es la una y media.” (It is 1:30)

• Use the word “cuarto” for a quarter of an hour. – Ejemplos:

• Son las cinco y cuarto. (It is 5:15)• Son las ocho y cuarto. (It is 8:15)• Son las tres y cuarto. (It is 3:15)

• This works the same way with “Es la una y cuarto.” (It is 1:15)

• Use menos + minutos for the number of minutes BEFORE the hour. – Ejemplos:

• Son las dos menos diez. (It is 1:50)• Son las cinco menos cuarto. (It is 4:45)• Son las ocho menos cinco. (It is 7:55)

• This works the same way with “Es la una menos diez.” (It is 12:50).

• To ask what time it is use, – ¿Qué hora es?

– Ejemplos:• La pregunta: ¿Qué hora es? (What time is it?)• La respuesta: Son las cinco menos veinticinco. (It

is 4:35.)

• To talk about when something will happen use:– ¿A qué hora + verb + event?

• La pregunta: ¿A qué hora es la clase? (At what time is the class?)

– A la + hora or A las + hora• La respuesta: A las dos. (At two o’clock.)
