AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam 2014

Dear friends,

Over the past few decades futsal has slowly developed into a favorite sports among the people. This is clear everywhere around us; the sport has generated great interest and one can see it being played almost on a daily basis, from morning till late night. That is the beauty of the game.

Competitive futsal has also progressed well in Asia and the AFC Futsal Championship 2014 is an indication that more can be expected from this great confederation.

16 teams competed in the finals of the Championship and in the end, Japan successfully defended the crown. Of course, credit to the Iran team who fought valiantly to the end – they were more than worthy finalists.

Looking at the Championship as a whole, it should not be ignored that the top two teams, Japan and Iran, have again set a high standard for the rest of the teams to follow. No doubt there are all-around improvements from all teams, and the technical and tactical abilities shown in the competition from all the players made it quite a spectacle; but it is pertinent that the standard is equal across the board.

AFC is determined to improve futsal in the whole of Asia, and we will continue to perform assessments to systematically evaluate the futsal development of our Member Associations and help raise the standards. With FIFA Futsal Championship, Colombia looming in 2016, let us lift our game and take it to the rest of the world.

Lastly, congratulations to Vietnam for doing a great job hosting the AFC Futsal Championship 2014, and again to Japan for a deserved success.

Sincerely,

Salman bin Ebrahim Al KhalifaAFC PresidentFIFA Executive Committee Member

AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam 2014

Dear friends,

International futsal competitions have started to grab people’s attention all over the world and the AFC Futsal Championship was definitely not short of interest.

It is no secret where the interest lies; the technicality and skill involved in a futsal game is a joy to watch and having personally seen what our players in Asia can do, I am confident our players are ready to make a mark on the world stage.

Futsal has been one of the priorities for AFC these past several years. In working towards a more wholesome and integrated futsal development for the continent, we have initiated the AFC Futsal Development Programme and will continue to conduct assessment visits to Member Associations in order to systematically gauge the progress of Asian futsal.

At the moment, more needs to be done to bring other Asian countries on level terms with Japan and Iran, however as we have seen from this tournament the level may not be too far off – Japan was on the verge of elimination from group D before eventually winning the tournament.

AFC produced this technical report as a means for all the players, coaches, instructors and educators to have an in-depth study at the technical elements of our game.

With a panel of technical experts contributing to a comprehensive report, the technical analysis provided will be helpful in giving teams a detailed evaluation of where things can be further strengthened, and where improvements can be made.

With great enthusiasm and commitment from the Asian people, I am confident that the standards of Asian futsal will continue to increase for years to come.

For the tournament champions Japan, congratulations on your hard-fought win, you have again set the benchmark for others to follow. I would also like to express my appreciation to Vietnam for being a wonderful host for the AFC Futsal Championship 2014.

Sincerely,

AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam 2014

The 2014 AFC Futsal Championship was held in Vietnam from April 30 to May 10, 2014. Being the 13th edition of the AFC Futsal Championship, there was a marked

improvement in the overall level of the competition with the majority of the teams showing great progress, resulting in high tempo matches. The intensity and high pressure in this Championship is also clearly evident. A total of 16 countries participated in this tournament which was eventually won by the defending champions Japan when they successfully defeated Iran in the final. Third place went to Uzbekistan, with Kuwait grabbing the fourth spot. During the entire tournament, a total of

32 matches were played and a total of 221 goals were scored by the various teams. The overall top scorer was Hossein Tayyebi from Iran who scored a total of 15 goals.

The Most Valuable Player of the competition was conferred to Asghar Hassanzadeh who had a major influence on his team’s matches and the overall competition. For collecting the most Fair Play points in the competition, Japan was also awarded the Fair Play Award. Overall, it was an exciting and competitive tournament, with good sportsmanship and teamwork all around.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS ● TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

TThe AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam 2014 was successfully held in the Phu Tho Stadium and Ton Duc Thang University Stadium, Vietnam. Japan was crowned

tournament champions after a hard-fought victory over Iran through penalty shoot-out, with the teams being deadlocked at 2-2 after extra time.

The tournament in Ho Chi Minh City saw 16 teams fought bravely throughout 11 days. A total of 221 goals were scored from the 32 matches, an average of 6.9 goals per match. The number of goals reflects the aggressive nature of the game played by most teams and that a cautious approach to the game is now a thing of the past. Surprisingly, except for the final, none of the other matches in the knock out stage went to extra time for a tie-breaker!

However, many of the games were closely fought that it was difficult to pick a winner. Forecasting the two teams that will qualify for the quarterfinals from each group was also tough task! What was particularly interesting about the group stages was that three out of the four groups can merely decide the two qualified teams after the final group stage matches. This shows that the level of competition has heightened and even till the last minute, there are still many possible outcomes. Iraq can be labelled as the most unlucky team as they had six points but still could not qualify for the next round!

Majority of the matches were played in high tempo. Teams employed high pressure in their game and this is noticeable in each match. This could indicate that the fitness level of most teams have elevated. Would this be the trend of Futsal in the future?

China used to be recognised as one of the better teams in Asia, however in this tournament there were eliminated after a run of three losses in the group stage. Similarly, the promising Korea Republic also failed to record a single point in their three group matches under their new Spanish coach.

After losing in the semi-final match to Thailand two years ago in UAE, Iran this time around is clearly determined to prove to everyone that they are still the power house in Asia. Although the team is filled with plenty of new faces, but their performances were so outstanding that no team were able stop them from scoring goals. They scored 52 times in 6 matches!

Japan, the defending champion and eventual winners, showed great mentality during the final match against Iran. Coming into the final as underdog, Japan did not show any fear and fought bravely till the end. The Champions truly played as a team, showed great discipline in defend, and were quick in their counter attack – they undoubtedly were able to put their loss to Uzbekistan earlier in the group stage behind them!

The host Vietnam sent a young inexperienced team to take part in this tournament, however their performances were really surprising! The individual skill level, ideal physical condition, good fighting spirit coupled with a strong winning mentality gave their supporters a real boost.

One key element that had really drawn our attention was the fact that half of the teams in this Championship had appointed local coaches to lead them. Three local coaches had even

Page 19: TECHNICAL REPORT & STATISTICS AFC FUTSAL …res.cloudinary.com/deltatreafcprod/image/upload/j5... · Futsal has been one of the priorities for AFC these past several years. In working

19

successfully guided their national team to the quarterfinals!

Some of the teams had used this Championship to assess the abilities and potential of their new players. Once they have gained more international experience, we could foresee this young generation becoming a big force for our futsal family in Asia. We believe that the level of the next Asian Futsal Championship will be higher than ever!

CoaChes InferenCe

More teams applied the ‘four players substitute four players’ strategy in order to keep their high pressure tactics and keep the match at a high tempo. On the other hand, some coaches executed two different tactics through two groups of players.

Time Out – was not just used to relay information when the coach feels that their team was not performing well but rather it was applied late in a match, especially in a tight match, to execute a set play.

Power play – Some coaches applied this to get a result or to waste time rather early in the 2nd half if they were leading. However, there were very few successful examples in this tournament.

reCommendatIon

Teams need to be more flexible in their attacking formation. The better teams like Iran, Japan, Thailand etc., does not have a fixed attacking formation or system in each game. They kept changing and adapting to the situation and opposition.

Ability to keep pressing - Players’ average physical condition needs to be elevated in order to have the ability to pressurise their opponents. This would be one of the best ways to force the oppositions to make mistakes during an attack.

The anti-press ability - More and more teams applied the high pressure strategy in most part of the match. This is likely to be the trend in defending.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS ● STORY OF THE TOURNAMENT

MATCH DAY 1Group A: Kuwait 5-0 (2-0) Tajikistan

Abdurlraham Al Taweel scored a hat-trick as Kuwait made the perfect start to their AFC Futsal Championship journey with a comfortable 5-0 win over Group A opponents Tajikistan. Captain Hamad Hayat gave Kuwait the perfect start at Phu Tho Stadium by opening the scoring after just three minutes after latching onto a cross from Al Taweel.

Al Taweel was again involved when Kuwait doubled their lead in the 13th minute before Luis Fonseca’s side killed the match off early in the second half as Hayat netted his second of the match. Tajikistan missed several chances to reduce the deficit before the break as Khurshed Makhmudov was put through in the 14th minute only to blaze over with just the goalkeeper to beat before hitting the woodwork just before the break.

Kuwait were twice denied by the woodwork in the second half before Al Taweel went on to complete his hat-trick by scoring twice inside the closing minutes to wrap up the three points.

30 April 2014

Group B: Iran 5-1 (4-0) Indonesia

Iran underlined their AFC Futsal Championship title credentials as the 10-time champions recorded a 5-1 win over a hard-working Indonesia in Group B opener at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. Hossein Tayebi opened the scoring for Iran, and despite Indonesia frustrating the 10-time champions as the half progressed, a quickfire double from Farhad Tavakoli and a strike from Asghar Hassanzadeh extended the advantage in the closing stages of the first half. Iran did ease off in the second half allowing Indonesia to pull a goal back midway through the second period as Andri Kustiawan emphatically fired home a second shot after Samimi had saved with his legs.

But with just less than two minutes remaining, Indonesia were caught short at the back as a quick throw by goalkeeper Samimi sent Shafiei clear, and after rounding Yos Adi, Iran’s fifth goal was finally added.

Group A: Vietnam 1-2 (0-0) Iraq

Waleed Khalid scored in the last minute as Iraq claimed a last-gasp 2-1 victory over AFC Futsal Championship hosts Vietnam. Vietnam made the brighter start of the two teams and nearly got the early goal they were looking for after just two minutes but Vu Xuan Du saw his effort come back off the post.

Iraq were given the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot with Vietnam penalised for an accumulation of six team fouls, but goalkeeper Tran Buu Phuoc did enough to put off Khalid and maintain parity. After constricting the hosts in the first half of the Group C opener, Iraq made the breakthrough two minutes after half-time thanks to Firas Mohammed’s deflected strike in front of more than 3,000 fans at Phu Tho Stadium.

The lead, though, was short lived as Hussein Al Zubaidi deflected a shot from Pham Thanh Dat past goalkeeper Ahmed Duraid three minutes later. And Vietnam continued to push for the victory only for Iraq to punish the hosts with Khalid, who had missed the earlier penalty, netting following a counterattack.

Group B: Australia 2-1 (1-1) China PR

The Group B opener at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium saw China made the ideal start to the match as Zhang Wen ghosted in unmarked at the back post to turn home Deng Tao’s superb angled slide rule pass after just three minutes. Australia, though, equalised just three minutes later in similar fashion as Ray Miller provided the pass for Tobias Seeto to net from close range. And the Futsalroos began to assert control on the contest as the half progressed as Fernando De Moraes was denied twice in quick succession by China goalkeeper Zhu Bei, with the first a superb fingertip save after 15 minutes.

The even nature of the contest continued into the second half with both sides showing plenty of attacking intent, but crucially lacking the required quality in the final third.

China showed their intent to claim all three points in the final two minutes as goalkeeper Zhu was withdrawn and replaced by Zhao Liang. The move backfired with 64 seconds remaining as China conceded possession, and with Zhao out of position, Tobias Seeto scored his second of the night from close to the 10 metre penalty spot inside his own half.

MATCH DAY 2Group C: Thailand 7-1(2-1) Malaysia

A hat-trick from Suphawat Thueanklang ensured 2012 runners-up Thailand opened this year’s AFC Futsal Championship campaign with a comfortable 7-1 victory over Malaysia in Group C opener. Malaysia, who had qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2008, stuck to their game plan in the first half at Phu Tho Stadium. The game sparked into life not long after the start with two Thailand goals in the space of a minute either side of a goal for Malaysia. Thailand opened the scoring after Jirawat Sornwichian tapped in an easy finish following a square ball by Suphawut. Malaysia, though, responded immediately and levelled proceedings 30 seconds later after the ball bounced kindly for Asmie Zahari in front of the goal. Thailand reclaimed their lead in the 12th minute when Jirawat and Suphawut teamed up again, with Jirawat turning quickly to beat the goalkeeper.

After some strong words from Coach Victor Hermans, Thailand came out for the second half a lot stronger and three goals from Suphawat and a goal from Wiwat as well as an own goal by Malaysia’s Zubaidee Alwee wrapped up a convincing win for the 2012 runners-up.

01 May 2014

Group D: Japan 12-0 (4-0) Korea Republic

Nobuya Osodo and Yusuke Nakamura each scored hat-tricks as Japan underlined their ambition to defend their AFC Futsal Championship titles following a one-sided 12-0 win over Korea Republic in Group D opener.

Kazuhiro Nibuya also scored twice while Akira Minamoto, Shunta Uchimura, Toru Sato and Kaoru Morioka were also on target at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium.

Japan had only led by four goals at half-time, but eight goals in the second half underlined the gulf in class and sent out an early warning to the rest of the competitors with Miguel Rodrigo’s side looking determined to claim a third AFC Futsal Championship title.

Group C: Lebanon 8-5(2-4) Chinese Taipei

Mohamad Kobeissy netted a hat-trick as Lebanon secured a hard-fought 8-5 win over Chinese Taipei in their opening match of the AFC Futsal Championship in Group C. Lebanon came out of the blocks quickly for the game Phu Tho Stadium and was rewarded when they took the lead in just the second minute through Moustafa Serhan. Chinese Taipei then found themselves back on level terms when Chu Chia-Ying caught Lebanon in possession and scored their opening goal. With the initiative swinging in Chinese Taipei’s favour, they took the lead in the 11th minute from the penalty spot scored by Liu Chi-Chao. Lebanon, responded through Ali Tneich who fired a powerful shot past Pan Wen-Chieh. But Lebanon ended the half poorly and Chinese Taipei scored twice through Huang Cheng-Tsung Huang.

But after Araujo’s half-time team talk, Lebanon responded in the second half and soon found themselves back on level terms with two quick strikes from Tneich and Mohamad Kobeissy. Lebanon completed the comeback less than 30 seconds later after another long range effort from Kobeissy, this time from close to the sideline.

Chinese Taipei, though, had not given up and pulled the game level for a fourth time when Lo Chih-En blasted a free-kick into the roof of the net on 27 minutes. But it was less than a minute before Lebanon took the lead again as the ball bounced to Ahmad Kheir El Dine in space and he hit the ball sweetly on the half volley. Lebanon put the game out of the reach of Chinese Taipei in the 35th minute through Hassan Zeitoun before wrapping up the victory with a minute remaining when Kobeissy secured his hat-trick with a composed finish past Pan and into the top corner.

Group D: Kyrgyzstan 2-2 (0-2) Uzbekistan

With the entire contest played out in front of an electric atmosphere provided by a colourful contingent of Uzbekistan supporters at the Ton Duc Thang University Stadium, Kyrgyzstan started strongly and Vadim Kondratkov hit the foot of the Uzbekistan post after just over four minutes. But Uzbekistan took the lead against the run of play just over a minute later as Tabaldiev’s attempted headed clearance from Shuhrat Tojiboev’s long ball forward looped over his own goalkeeper from just outside the penalty area with Nikolai Shamonin out of position.

Uzbekistan added a second just over four minutes before half-time as Farkhod Abdumavlyanov’s angled strike evaded Shamonin and found the bottom corner. Both sides maintained the end-to-end nature of the fast-paced contest into the second half.

Late into the game Kyrgyzstan withdrew goalkeeper Shamonin in place of Marat Duvanaev. But while Duvanaev was not on the field with three minutes remaining, Kyrgyzstan reduced the deficit as Ulan Ryskulov fired high past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Umarov. And Kyrgyzstan equalised with 62 seconds remaining as Emil Kanetov squeezed his low angled shot between Shamonin and the near post.

MATCH DAY 3Group A: Kuwait 5-0 (2-0) Tajikistan

Abdulrahman Al Taweel scored his second hat-trick in as many games as Kuwait maintained their 100% record at the AFC Futsal Championship after recording a 5-3 win against Iraq at Phu Tho Stadium. Kuwait had opened the scoring in just the second when Ahmad Al Farsi volleyed home from a corner. The lead was doubled in the 16th minute as Al Taweel rounded off a swift counterattack after exchanging passes with Hamad Hayat. A reckless lunge by goalkeeper Hani Mhisen on Al Farsi just outside his penalty area gave Iraq a way back as conceded Kuwait’s sixth foul of the half. Substitute goalkeeper Abdullah Hayat, saved the spot kick but could not prevent Amjad Kareem scoring from the rebound.

Kuwait restored their two-goal lead in the 25th minute when Abdulrahman Al Mosabehi dispatched a sweet volley from Al Taweel’s corner past goalkeeper Ahmed Duraid. Al Taweel scored his second of the game in the 29th minute by dispatching a low first-time shot hard into the bottom corner. The hat-trick was completed a minute later when Al Taweel hit another first-time strike past a despondent Duraid.Chasing the game, Iraq opted to bring outfield player Waleed Khalid on in place of goalkeeper Duraid when in possession and the tactic paid off when he scored in the 34th minute. Iraq created a frantic final few minutes as they scored again a minute later through Karrar Al Thabeti’s header, but Iraq were unable to make further inroads into the advantage.

02 May 2014

Group B: Indonesia 0-5 (0-2) Australia

Australia maintained their 100% record at the AFC Futsal Championship with a 5-0 win over Indonesia at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. Australia enjoyed the better of the early chances with opposition goalkeeper Adi kept busy, although Indonesia remained in the contest by proving particularly dangerous when counterattacking.

Wade Giovenali opened the scoring after 13 minutes of the Group B contest with Indonesia playing with four-men after Fachri Reza had been sent-off before Fernando De Moraes increased Australia’s advantage in the last minute of the first half.

With just under 10 minutes remaining Indonesia goalkeeper Yos Adi picked up a second yellow card following a challenge on Australia captain Greg Giovenali close to the halfway line. Late goals from Greg Giovenali, Tobias Seeto and Daniel Fogarty sealed a comfortable win as Australia followed up the last-gasp victory over China.

Group A: Tajikistan 4-10 (2-5) Vietnam

AFC Futsal Championship hosts Vietnam posted their first win of the campaign in emphatic style with a 10-4 victory over Tajikistan in front of another large crowd at Phu Tho Stadium. The deadlock was broken in the 10th minute when Ly Khanh Hung cut the ball back to find Tran Van Vu on the edge of the penalty area and he slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

The lead, though, was short lived as Tajikistan was back on level terms within a minute when Khurshed Makhmudov scored. Vietnam found themselves back in front on 12 minutes courtesy of a fine individual goal by Trong Luan. Vietnam extended their advantage with goals from Ngoc Son and Le Quoc Nam. Pham Duc Hoa got his name on the scoresheet in the 16th minute with a superb solo goal as he rounded the Tajikistan goalkeeper before finishing from a tight angle. Tajikistan, though, pulled a goal back three minutes before half-time when Ulmasov played a cross-field pass to Mansur Mamedbabaev and he scored into an empty net with Phuoc Anh out of position.

The hosts scored their sixth goal in the 25th minute, when Bao Quan hit a stunning volley past Alikulov. With Tajikistan pushing for a way back into the game, Vietnam further extended their lead with goals from Trong Luan and Ngoc Son. Tajikistan players did not give up and scored a quick double through Sherzod Jumaev and Makhmudov in the 28th minute to give them a glimmer of hope. But Vietnam finished the rout with goals from Boa Quan and Khanh Hung in the final minutes.

Group B: China PR 0-12 (0-6) IR Iran

Iran qualified for the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Championship from Group B early after the 10-time champions eased to a 12-0 win over China at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. Hossein Tayebi scored four and Asghar Hassanzadeh scored a hat-trick in an impressive showing by the Asian powerhouse.

Iran flew out of the blocks and opened the scoring after just 15 seconds through Hassanzadeh. The lead was doubled with less than a minute on the clock as Tayebi netted from range before Hassanzadeh turned home from Alireza Vafaei’s pass to extend the advantage with barely 90 seconds played. China were able to regroup, but Tavakoli eventually took the lead to four in the fifth minute before Shafiei struck Iran’s fifth midway through the first half. And just under nine minutes before half-time, Tayebi also got his name on the scoresheet for a second time with a shot from outside of the penalty area.

Iran eventually add a seventh of the contest just over four minutes after the restart through Fakhim. Hassanzadeh completed his hat-trick a minute later by rounding off an eye-catching team move, with Vafaei again providing the assist. Tayebi scored a two more goals either side of a goal each by Shafiei and Ahmadi to round off an easy win.

MATCH DAY 4Group C: Malaysia 5-1 (3-1) Lebanon

Muhammad Shamsul gave Malaysia, who had lost their opening game 7-1 to 2012 runners-up Thailand, the perfect start after less than a minute before two quickfire goals from Nizam Ali extended the advantage at Phu Tho Stadium. Lebanon, though, found a way back into the game four minutes before the break when Tneich pounced on a slip from Abu Hasan to score.

Malaysia then restored their three-goal advantage in the 23rd minute as Asmie Zahari fizzed the ball across the face of the goal from Kadir’s corner and Shamsul tapped home his second of the game from close range. Wanting to get back into the game, and with still 13 minutes remaining, Lebanon coach Francisco Araujo sacrificed substitute goalkeeper Tarek Tabboush and brought on Kobeissy as an extra outfield player. But the tactic backfired in the 34th minute as Aula Ahmad was able to direct his effort from within his own half on target with no Lebanon players protecting the goal just seconds after Zahari had hit the post.

03 May 2014

Group D: Korea Republic 1-4 (0-1) Kyrgyzstan

Unbeaten Kyrgyzstan boosted their hopes of a place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Championship after Rustam Ermekov scored twice to secure a 4-1 win over Korea Republic at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium.

Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent from the first whistle, although it was Kyrgyzstan who enjoyed the better of the early chances. They opened the scoring just over three minutes before half-time as Marat Duvanaev played a free-kick short to Ermekov, who side-footed the ball into the bottom corner through a crowded penalty area.

Kyrgyzstan doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half as Ermekov rounded off a quick exchange of passes by beating Lee at his near post. Korea scored in the 32nd minute as Shin rounded off a swift counterattack with a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area.

But with just under four minutes remaining goalkeeper Lee Kyung-ho carried the ball outside of his penalty area, and with that bringing up Korea’s sixth foul of the half, Marat Duvanaev was given a free shot at goal from the resulting set-piece and he made no mistake. With just over 10 seconds of the contest remaining, Kondratkov Vadim sealed the win with Korea pushing forward.

Group C: Chinese Taipei 2-5 (0-3) Thailand

Thailand maintained their 100% record at the AFC Futsal Championship 2014 with a 5-2 win against a spirited Chinese Taipei in Group C at Phu Tho Stadium. Thailand started brightly and Suphawat Thueanklang, who scored a hat-trick in a 7-1 win over Malaysia, opened the scoring for the 2012 runners-up after just three minutes before goals from Jetsada Chudech and Piyapan Ratana put Victor Hermans’ side in a commanding position.

Chinese Taipei, though, never dropped their heads and restricted Thailand for the remainder of the half and even created several opportunities through Chang Hao-Wei and Liu Chi-Chao. But the pressure told in the second half as Kritsada Wongkaeo scored one more goal for Thailand before Chinese Taipei threatened a comeback with a goal from Lo Chih-An.

The goal gave Thailand a much needed wake-up call and they soon restored their three goal lead less than a minute later as Kritsada played a neat one-two with Suphawat before finding the net. Thailand’s fifth arrived in the 33rd minute when Jirawat scored his third goal of the tournament before Huang Cheng-Tsung grabbed a consolation for Chinese Taipei soon after.

Group D: Uzbekistan 2-1 (1-1) Japan

Artur Yunusov’s header with just under eight seconds remaining saw Uzbekistan snatch a dramatic 2-1 win over defending champions Japan at the AFC Futsal Championship following an enthralling Group D contest at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium.

Japan made an electric start with Uzbekistan goalkeeper Rustam Umarov called into action multiple times to keep the scores level. The pressure finally paid off after nine minutes as Akira Minamoto’s diagonal cross-field pass from a kick-in was turned in at the back post by Ryosuke Nishitani. But the lead lasted less than a minute as Andrey Shlema followed up with an emphatic first-time finish from the edge of the penalty having seen his initial strike blocked by Japan goalkeeper Hisamitsu Kawahara.

Umarov remained the busier goalkeeper at the start of the second half parrying shots from Japan’s attacking forces. But Umarov also tried his luck at the other end as he tested Kawahara remaining from inside his own penalty area with just under five minutes, and his backpedaling opposite number had to be on his toes to push the effort one-handed over the crossbar. With the clock showing 7.8 seconds remaining, Yunusov’s glancing header on the edge of the Japan penalty area from Shuhrat Tojiboev’s long ball forward looped over Kawahara, who was caught out of position to give Uzbekistan a surprise victory over Japan.

MATCH DAY 5Group B: IR Iran 8-1 (6-1) Australia

Hossein Tayebi scored a first half hat-trick as 10-time champions Iran recorded a third consecutive win at the AFC Futsal Championship with 8-1 victory over Australia at Phu Tho Stadium securing top spot in Group C.

Having earlier beaten Indonesia and China, it took just 60 seconds for Iran to open the scoring as Tayebi followed up after Adam Cooper had blocked Asghar Hassanzadeh’s shot. But Australia found themselves back on level terms as Fogarty fired into the roof of the net from Tobias Seeto’s corner. Iran, though, regained the lead in controversial circumstances in the 10th minute as Shafiei crossed for Taheri to score with Australia calling for play to be stopped after a second ball had entered the field of play.

Further brace from Tayebi and a goal each for Vafaei and Shafiei made the score 6-1 at half time. Ahmad Esmailpour and Taheri extended Iran’s advantage in the second half as Iran gave another impressive showing in the competition following their earlier wins over Indonesia and China.

Group B: China PR 3-4 (2-2) Indonesia

Indonesia claimed third place in Group B at the AFC Futsal Championship after recording a 4-3 win over China at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. It was Indonesia who opened the scoring inside three minutes as Kustiawan converted at the second attempt from close range having seen his initial effort blocked by China goalkeeper Zhu Bei. China, though, were back on level terms just over five minutes later as Zhao Liang’s low shot from outside of the penalty area found the bottom corner past Agus Salam’s outstretched hand. China completed the turnaround less than two minutes later as Zhang Wen’s pass created the angle for Wang to beat Salam at his near post from the edge of the area. But the lead lasted less than a minute as Silitonga rounded off an eye-catching move with a composed finish past Zhu from inside the area.

Indonesia regained the lead midway through the second half as Kustiawan’s scored with the outside of his foot from the edge of the penalty area. Adventurous China coach Lima quickly responded by introducing Zhao in place of goalkeeper Zhu with just under eight minutes remaining. But the move backfired with less than five minutes remaining as China lost possession and Silitonga found the empty net from just inside his own half. China did pull a goal back with less than a minute remaining as Andriansyah turned Deng Tao’s pass across the face of goal into his own net, but Indonesia saw out the remaining seconds to seal the win.

Group A: Vietnam 2-1 (1-0) Kuwait

Vietnam booked their place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Championship with a 2-1 win over Kuwait, although the tournament hosts missed out on top spot in Group A on goal difference to their opponents after conceding with just five seconds remaining at Phu Tho Stadium.

Vietnam started the quicker of the two teams, and the stadium erupted three minutes before half-time when Trong Luan drilled the ball across the face of goal for Quoc Nam to bundle home at the back post. The lead could have been doubled 10 seconds later when Trong Luan was played through, but his shot was parried away by Hani Mhisen.

Vietnam did extend their lead four minutes into the second half as when Tran Van Vu was found in space and he squared the ball to Trong Luan to send the host fans into a frenzy. Kuwait coach Luis Fonseca demanded a quick response as he replaced goalkeeper Mhisen with outfield player Abdulrahman Al Wadi. The move forced Vietnam to drop deep and the breakthrough finally arrived with just five seconds left on the clock as Phuoc Anh spilled a cross under little pressure and Al Mosabehi saw his shot trickle over the line to settle Kuwait’s nerves.

Group A: Tajikistan 1-6 (1-2) Iraq

Iraq missed out on a place in the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Championship on goal difference despite a 6-1 win over Tajikistan at the Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. With both sides needing to win, Iraq opened the scoring inside the first minute in spectacular fashion as Mustafa Bachay found the net from just inside the Tajikistan half. Despite the Tajikistan goal coming under significant pressure, Iraq were made to pay for a host of missed chances as Makhmudov’s deflected 13th minute strike beat goalkeeper Ahmed Duraid.

Iraq regained the lead less than two minutes later as Hassan Ali scored from the edge of the penalty area. The lead was extended four minutes into the second half with Bachay getting is second goal of the game. Waleed Khalid then got his name on the scoresheet three minutes later and Ali added his second some 90 seconds later with an angled strike from close to the touchline.

Iraq added a sixth with just over five minutes remaining as Karrar Al Thabeti danced down the left touchline after picking the ball up inside his own half before firing past Bibudov from the edge of the area. The final whistle drew muted celebrations for Iraq before their fate was confirmed despite Kuwait’s late goal against Vietnam.

AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam 2014

MATCH DAY 6Group C: Thailand 3-3 (0-2) Lebanon

Having lost 5-1 to Malaysia in their previous outing to concede the head-to-head advantage, Lebanon got off to the perfect start after just 60 seconds at the Phu Tho Stadium when Mohamad Kobeissy found Ali Tneich who side-footed home. Lebanon’s lead was doubled when Abou Zeid broke down the right wing and beat substitute goalkeeper Katawut Hankampa at the near post.

Thailand halved the deficit 35 seconds after the re-start when Kritsada Wongkaeo saw his shot deflect over the head of Tarek Tabboush. The problems, though, only increased for Thailand in the 22nd minute when Kritsada was sent-off after picking up a second yellow card for a pull on Kobeissy on the half-way line, although Lebanon were unable to take advantage. But, restored to five players, Thailand eventually found an equaliser in the 33rd minute when Jirawat Sornwichian found Suphawut from a corner and he hit his shot low and hard past Tabboush.

And Suphawut completed the comeback for Thailand with just 35 seconds remaining as he hit his strike through a crowded penalty area. But there was still time for Lebanon coach Araujo to throw on an extra outfield player in a desperate attempt to find an equaliser and it came through Karim Abou Zeid to book their place in the quarter-finals.

05 May 2014

Group C: Chinese Taipei 3-2 (2-1) Malaysia

Malaysia should have opened the scoring midway through the first half at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium through Qaiser Kadir, but despite having only Chinese Taipei goalkeeper Shih Shin-An to beat, he pushed his effort wide of the post from the edge of the penalty area. Malaysian goalkeeper Firdaus Razali was beaten two minutes later as Lo Chih-An’s cross somehow evaded several Malaysia players inside the penalty area and Chang was on hand to tap-in at the back post. And Chinese Taipei extended their advantage three minutes before half-time as Huang Cheng-Tsung followed up after Asmie Razali had saved from Wu Chun-Ching.

With just over 30 seconds left in the first half, Malaysia halved the deficit with a well-worked team goal as the ball found its way across the edge of the penalty area via Muhammad Shamsul and Zubaidi Alwee for Zahari and he produced a composed finish past Shih.

Chinese Taipei, though, restored their two-goal advantage six minutes after half-time as Malaysia conceded possession on the halfway line and Lo Chih-An fed Weng Wei-Pin who fired past Razali from the edge of the penalty area. But Malaysia hit back three minutes later as Yatim was on hand to convert from close range. Chinese Taipei then stood firm to hold onto their slender advantage and claim a first win of the campaign.

Group D: Japan 4-0 (3-0) Kyrgyzstan

Japan bounced back from the 2-1 defeat by Uzbekistan to end Kyrgyzstan’s hopes of progressing with a 4-0 win at Phu Tho Stadium. With Japan needing to win and Kyrgyzstan only need a point to advance, Minamoto was the first name on the score sheet when a cross-field ball from Shota Hoshi found him free at the back post and he finished first time into the roof of the net. The lead was doubled on nine minutes after a shot from Tomoki Yoshikawa could only be parried by Kyrgyzstan goalkeeper Kirill Ermolov and Kazuhiro Nibuya was on hand to follow up.

Ermolov was able to keep Japan at bay with a series of impressive saves, but Japan again found a way through three minutes before half-time as Nobuya Osodo flicked his shot first time past Ermolov. The Kyrgyzstan goalkeeper was again called into action in the 23rd minute when he pulled off a superb double save from Tomoaki Watanabe and Manabu Takita.

Ermolov was eventually withdrawn with five minutes remaining in place of an extra outfield player as Kyrgyzstan pushed for a way back into the game, but seconds after the change, Osodo took advantage by passing the ball into an empty net after winning the ball on the halfway line.

Group D: Uzbekistan 3-0 (1-0) Korea Republic

With Uzbekistan needing to win to guarantee qualification and Korea only playing for pride following two defeats, it was the Central Asians who made the stronger start at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium and rattled the post after nine minutes through Andrey Shlema.

But nothing could stop Uzbekistan eventually opening the scoring just over five minutes before half-time as Shuhrat Tojiboev poked home from close range following a free-kick on the edge of the Korea penalty area. Uzbekistan remained the dominant force in the second half but struggled to find the required quality in the final third to increase their advantage as Davron Choriev’s header with 10 minutes remaining landed on top of the crossbar.

But four minutes later Choriev finally doubled Uzbekistan’s lead as he swept home at the back post from Tojiboev’s kick-in. And with just over 90 seconds remaining, Dilshod Rakhmatov’s sealed the win by turning home from Tojiboev’s free-kick. Korea eventually finished the game with four-men on the field as Kim Ho-jin picked up a second yellow card with just over 10 seconds remaining.

QUARTER FINALSKuwait 5-2 (0-0) Australia

With a place in the semi-finals at stake, the evenly-matched contest got off to a cagey start at Phu Tho Stadium although Mohammad Al Dousari did strike the foot of Australia’s post after seven minutes. Dean Lockhart was presented with Australia’s best chance of the first half three minutes before half-time, but after being found by Greg Giovenali’s long ball, he fired straight at Kuwait goalkeeper Hani Mhisen.

Kuwait finally found a breakthrough just seven seconds in the second half as Al Wadi found Hamad Hayat and the captain guided his shot past Australia goalkeeper Peter Spathis via the upright. Australia coach Steven Knight eventually responded by replacing Spathis with an extra outfield player when his side were in possession. But Kuwait doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Abdulrahman Al Wadi volleyed home his seventh goal of the tournament. Al Wadi further extended Kuwait’s lead in the 31st minute when he stabbed the ball through a crowded penalty area and into the bottom corner. Hayat then added his second of the game a minute later after squeezing the ball under the body of an out-rushing Spathis.

Tobias Seeto was able to get a goal back for Australia with seven minutes remaining, but with the Futsalroos pushing for more goals, Al Wadi struck into an empty net on the counterattack. Jarrod Basger’s shot from a tight angle with two minutes remaining gave Australia another glimmer of hope, but Kuwait saw out the final minutes to seal their place in the quarter-finals.

07 May 2014

Thailand 2-3 (1-2) Japan

After an even start to the contest with both sides showing plenty of attacking intent at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium, Japan opened the scoring after seven minutes as Kazuhiro Nibuya slid in at the back post to convert Akira Minamoto’s low cross and claim his fourth goal of the campaign. Japan doubled their lead six minutes before half-time as Nobuya Osodo rounded Thailand goalkeeper Katawut Hankampa on the edge of the penalty area and squeezed home his sixth goal in four games.

Thailand enjoyed more possession in the closing stages of the first half and with just over five seconds remaining in the first half, Japan conceded their sixth foul close to the halfway line and Suphawut Thueanklang beat Fujiwara from the 10-metre penalty spot to claim his seventh goal of the campaign. And five minutes into the second half the scores were level as Jirawat Sornwichian found a way past Fujiwara at his near post.

But with five just under five minutes remaining, Kaoru Morioka spun away from Piyapan close to the touchline before dispatching his shot past Katawut and into the far corner to reclaim the lead for Japan. Japan stood firm in the final minutes and did have a chance to extend their lead in the closing seconds, but Katawut saved Kotaro Inaba’s penalty, and there was no time for Thailand to mount one final attack.

IR Iran 15-4 (5-1) Vietnam

Iran started stronger at Phu Tho Stadium and found a way through when on three minutes Hossein Tayebi and roll the ball in the goal having spun around the out-rushing Dang Phuoc Anh. Iran doubled their lead with Tayebi scoring his second of the match. Vahid Shafiei then drilled a ball across the area Vietnam goalkeeper Phuoc Anh was left red faced as he deflected the ball into his own net for Iran’s third.

The hosts did reduce the deficit a minute later when a shot was parried by Samimi and Phung Trong Luan was able to poke the ball in from close range. But it took Iran less than 10 seconds to restore their three-goal advantage with a goal from Mohammad Shajari and Alireza Vafaei scored Iran’s fifth in the 16th minute. Ly Khanh Hung, though, ensured Vietnam were first to score after the break with a fine solo effort in the 22nd minute from near the half-way line.

But quick fire goals, from Tayebi and two goals from Asghar Hassanzadeh in the 25th minute, finally put the game out of Vietnam’s reach. Hassanzadeh then wrapped up his hat-trick with a spectacular effort from inside his own half which lobbed over substitute goalkeeper Tran Buu Phuoc. Trong Luan did pull another goal back for Vietnam in the 28th minute. Iran, then, saw goals from Mohammad Shajari (twice), Behroz Jafari and Farhad Fakhim (twice) with Pham Thanh Dat scoring one for Vietnam in the 36th minute to round-up the competition’s highest scoring match.

Uzbekistan 6-2 (1-0) Lebanon

Uzbekistan earned an AFC Futsal Championship semi-final with 10-time winners Iran after recording a resounding 6-2 win over Lebanon at the quarter-final at Ton Duc Thang University Stadium. Despite Uzbek goalkeeper Rustam Umarov remaining the busier of the two goalkeepers, opposite number Tarek Tabboush was the first to be beaten midway through the first half through Andrey Shlema’s first-time turning shot.

Lebanon resumed their dominance after the goal, but failed to make good of it and Uzbekistan scored twice in less than a minute at the start of the second half through Dilshod Rakhmatov and Shuhrat Tojiboev. Farkhod Abdumavlyanov then added a fourth minutes later with Lebanon again overcommitted as they pushed for a way back into the contest, with Tabboush beaten by a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Lebanon coach Francisco Araujo responded by withdrawing Tabboush in place of Mohamad Kobeissy, although the move quickly backfired as Artur Yunusov scored into an empty net from well inside the Uzbekistan half with nine minutes remaining. And a minute later, with Tabboush again off the field, Rakhmatov added a sixth for the Uzbeks. Lebanon did pull a goal back through Ahamd Kheir El Dine with under three minutes remaining before Moustafa Serhan netted in the final minute, although they did little to detract from a convincing victory for Uzbekistan.

SEMI FINALSKuwait 1-6 (1-1) Japan

Having edged out 2012 finalists Thailand 3-2 a day earlier, Japan made a bright start at Phu Tho Stadium and broke the deadlock when Inaba hit a low drive across the face of goal which Kuwait goalkeeper Hani Mhisen was unable to deal with. Japan continued to put pressure on Mhisen’s goal, but it was Kuwait that equalised after 15 minutes when Mohammad Mohammad tapped the ball home after Abdulrahman Al Wadi’s fierce shot was initially parried by Fujiwara.

Japan, though, found themselves back in front less than a minute after the break when Minamoto fired a shot over the head of Mhisen. The lead was doubled in the 22nd minute when Inaba drilled his shot into the roof of the net. As a result of the two- quickfire goals, Kuwait coach Luis Fonseca replaced goalkeeper Mhisen with Al Awadhi. But seconds later, Osodo was able to roll the ball into an empty net from inside his own half to extend the lead.

On 27 minutes Osodo caught Mohammad Al Dousari in possession and scored from a tight angle to take his tally for the tournament to eight. Osodo then turned provider two minutes later as he squared a ball to Shota Hoshi who was able to beat temporary goalkeeper Al Awadhi to give Japan a convincing win.

08 May 2014IR Iran 10-0 (5-0) Uzbekistan

Iran secured an 11th AFC Futsal Championship final appearance after a thumping victory over Uzbekistan at Phu Tho Stadium. Iran got off to a blistering start and took the lead after just 42 seconds when Alireza Vafaei fired a shot into the corner of the goal. The second came 30 seconds later when Hossein Tayebi was found on the edge of the penalty area and he spun to score.

Tayebi then turned provider less than a minute later by cutting out goalkeeper Rustam Umarov for Asghar Hassanzadeh to pass the ball into the net. And Iran further extended their lead in the seventh minute when Artur Yunusov pulled back on the shirt of Ahmad Esmaeilpour to concede a free-kick, and he made no mistake with a low strike past Umarov.

Iran continued to control the pace of the game after the restart and Vahid Shafiei got his second of the contest after 24 minutes. Tayebi netted his second and Iran’s seventh when he turned Farhad Tavakoli’s cross past Umarov in the 27th minute to complete this third hat-trick of the tournament. And after Mohammad Shajari added a ninth in the 30th minute, Iran reached double figures as Shafiei wrapped up his hat-trick when he was found open in the area by Esmaeilpour.

3rd/4th PLACINGKuwait 1-2 (0-1) Uzbekistan

With Iran having ended Uzbekistan’s hopes and Japan having beaten Kuwait in the semi-finals, both sides went into the match at Phu Tho Stadium determined to score the first goal. The Central Asians eventually found the breakthrough on 11 minutes as Dilshod Rakhmatov raced clear after winning and he slid the ball under goalkeeper Hani Mhisen. Goalkeeper Klim Tyugayev, who was brought on as a penalty specialist, then turned hero after he pulled off a stunning double save after first blocking Al Whadhi’s initial penalty with his feet before blocking the follow up from Abdulaziz Al Basam.

Kuwait had the first chance after the break as Abdulrahman Al Wadi shot wide before Rakhmatov shot agonisingly wide for Uzbekistan. With just nine minutes left Kuwait coach Luis Fonseca pushed for an equaliser by replacing goalkeeper Mhisen with outfield player Al Wadi. The move almost backfired seconds later as Yunusov was found on the break by Shuhrat Tojiboev only to fire wide with an open goal gaping.

Uzbekistan, though, did double their lead from the resulting corner as Abdumavlyanov chipped his close range effort over the head of Mhisen from Tojiboev’s delivery. But Kuwait set-up a tense final five minutes as Al Awadhi’s strike trickled into the far corner of the goal via the upright. Kuwait, though, were unable to find an equaliser in the closing stages and Uzbekistan claimed third place.

FINALJapan 2-2 a.e.t (1-1, 0-1)3-0 PSO IR Iran

After Japan and Iran had eased past their opponents in the semi-finals, the highly-anticipated final at Phu Tho Stadium started at a high tempo and it was Iran goalkeeper Alireza Samimi who was first called into action to deny Manabu Takita after just 30 seconds. Yushi Sekiguchi then denied Hassanzadeh at the other end on three minutes before the Japan custodian stopped Vahid Shafiei’s header from point blank range. With momentum in their favour, Iran opened the scoring after eight minutes when Hossein Tayebi pulled the ball back for Farhad Tavakoli to drill a low shot through a crowded penalty area and past Sekiguchi.

Iran kept Sekiguchi busy after half-time, but despite Japan struggling to find a foothold in the game, they levelled the tie in the 26th minute as Kotaro Inaba’s free-kick went under the wall and through the legs of Samimi. There was still time for Iran to have their chance to claim the title in normal time as Sekiguchi denied Hassanzadeh with just four seconds remaining to send the tie to extra-time.

But Iran were not to be denied just two minutes into the first half of extra-time as Tayebi was allowed to turn after receiving Vafaei’s pass and he fired his shot under the body of Sekiguchi. Japan coach Miguel Rodrigo eventually responded in the second half of extra-time by introducing Osodo in place of goalkeeper Sekiguchi. And the move paid off after just 40 seconds as Hamid Ahmadi deflected Tomoaki Watanabe’s low shot into his own net.

With both teams unable to score, the tie went to penalties. Kazuhiro Nibuya set Japan on their way in the shootout before Sekiguchi denied Mohammad Taheri. Tomoki Yoshikawa then extended the lead before Sekiguchi again saved from Ghodrat Bahadori. And after Akira Minamoto drilled his penalty past Samimi, Sekiguchi saved from Asghar Hassanzadeh to hand Japan a third AFC Futsal Championship title.

The team doctors/team physiotherapists reported ten (10) illnesses which were minor cases such as diarrhoea, abdominal spasm, upper respiratory infection and flu which were all treated through oral medication and rest.

At the Grand Saigon Hotel, where the AFC headquarters were situated, a numbers of conditions were examined and treated by the medical officers. All cases were satisfactorily resolved (upper respiratory tract infections, headaches, diarrhoea, ankle sprain, hamstring strain, constipation, and indigestion). One case was referred to a private hospital identified by AFC Medical Officer prior to the tournament.

doPIng Controls

At each game, doping controls were carried-out on players selected at random from each team. A total of 40 tests were carried out. The results showed that thirty-nine (39) reported negative for doping and one sample reported adverse analytical finding which is under case management.

The testing was done at the WADA accredited laboratory at the New Delhi National Dope Testing Laboratory in India. The co-operation from the players selected for testing and their accompanying medical representatives was excellent.

The Competition, Events and Hospitality Department as well as the Medical Department provided invaluable support, especially in the following areas:

Communication to the teams regarding the medical related activities;

Organisation of logistical arrangements of the medical meetings with the local medical committee and the 16 team doctors prior to the competition;

Medical department organization of the transport of samples to the testing laboratory; and

Follow-up on test results and general correspondence.

From a medical standpoint, the AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam 2014 was successful. There were no major medical events. Participating players, staff and members of the AFC delegation had quick access to medical services and care. All conditions were satisfactorily resolved.

Sincere thanks towards the Local Organizing Committee, especially to Dr. Tran Van Phuc for their assistance throughout the event.

The AFC Futsal Championship Vietnam concluded successfully in the City of Ho Chi Minh from 30th April – 10th May 2014, as a total of 16 qualified countries competed spiritedly in the AFC’s premiere Futsal Championship.

This is the 13th edition of the AFC Futsal Championship and the majority of the teams have improved markedly, with most of the matches being played in high tempo. Teams employed high pressure in their game and this is noticeable in each match.

A total of 2 Technical Study Group (TSG) members from AFC Futsal Elite Instructors were selected by the AFC Competitions Director alongside 12 assistant TSGs chosen from Vietnam to perform match analysis, data and statistic collection for future technical manual development.

The experienced Tsang Wai Chung acted as a TSG leader, and guided the teams well and provided great support in this task.
