The AFC Futsal Club Championship 2016 in Thailand showed once

again the excitement the sport can generate and provided a platform

on which to demonstrate the AFC’s continued commitment to futsal

development.

The seventh edition of the AFC Futsal Club Championship, which

involved 12 teams competing in Bangkok, Thailand, showed that teams

are rapidly improving. A total of 103 goals were scored in the 20 high-

tempo matches. For the 2016 Championship, these figures translate

to an average of 5.15 goals per match, reflecting the attacking style of

the game.

I would like to congratulate Nagoya Oceans of Japan again for their

hard-fought win. The Football Association of Thailand also deserves a

warm thank you as hosts of the successful tournament.

Asia has the quality to succeed at the highest level in futsal and we need

to make sure we capitalise on the potential. The AFC is determined to

improve futsal throughout Asia, and as part of its Futsal Development

Programme, the AFC will continue to conduct assessment visits to

Member Associations in order to systematically gauge their progress

in an attempt to continue the improvement in standards.

The AFC thanks everyone for their contribution to this report.

Match Day 1

Sanna Khanh Hoa FC opened the AFC Futsal Club Championship in style by claiming a comfortable 3-0 victory over Taipower FC in Group D at Bangkok Arena.

In an opening period with chances at a premium between the battle of the debutants, it was Vietnam’s Sanna who took a one-goal advantage into the break after Nguyen Trung Nam broke the deadlock shortly before half-time.

Sanna came out strongly after the restart and doubled their lead on 30 minutes through Phan Khac Chi, before Tran Van Thanh then rounded off the scoring two minutes from time as the Vietnamese team moved to the top of the Group D standings.

Abdalla Al Hosani’s equaliser ensured debutants Dibba Al Hissin of the United Arab Emirates secured a 2-2 draw with Iraq’s NAFIT Al-Wasat in the sides’ Group C opener in the AFC Futsal Club Championship.

NAFIT took control of the game from the off but went behind early on to Mario Claudio’s strike, before Ghodrat Bahadori smashed home an equaliser as half-time approached.

Mustafa Bachay gave NAFIT the lead at the midway stage of the second half only for Al Hosani to level soon after and, despite chances at both ends, neither side managed to find a winner as the tie ended level.

NAFIT started brightly at Bangkok Arena and could have gone in front on three minutes but Dibba keeper Hassan Ali did well to block Waleed Khalid’s toe-poked effort, before the custodian parried out Iranian Bahadori’s powerful drive soon after.

But Dibba then took a surprise lead in the sixth minute when Karim Abou laid the ball to Claudio, and the Portuguese forward burst through the middle to slip under goalkeeper Ahmed Duraid.

After a slow beginning with both sides struggling to keep possession, Taipower almost opened the scoring on seven minutes when Hung Kai-Chun saw his low effort rebound back off the post.

But Sanna did then take the lead a minute before the interval when Khac Chi turned and fired against the post only for the ball to fall kindly for Trung Nam to tap into an empty net.

The Vietnamese side started the second half confidently and should have made it two on 23 minutes after Khac Chi danced past goalkeeper Chiang Yung-Hsuan before scuffing his attempt from close range.

Taipower’s Lin Chien-Hsun was presented with a golden opportunity soon after but was thwarted by outrushing keeper Nguyen Dinh Y Hoa.Sanna duly put themselves firmly in the driving seat midway through the half when Khac Chi again skipped round Chiang and this time made no mistake with the finish.

The lively Khac Chi was denied a second with four minutes remaining when Chiang was out quickly to save his low effort, before Van Thanh toe-poked home on 38 minutes to wrap up a comprehensive second-half performance.

Hossein Tayebi and Saeid Abbasi scored braces as defending champions Tasisat Daryaei of Islamic Republic of Iran wrapped up a 4-3 victory over Uzbekistan’s Almalyk FC in Group B of the AFC Futsal Club Championship at Bangkok Arena.

Tasisat took the lead early on through Tayebi but a quick-fire double from Farkhod Abdumavlyanov put debutants Almalyk in front after 13 minutes.

Abbasi sent the sides into the break all square, before he then scored his second of the match with eight minutes remaining.

Tayebi opened up a two-goal lead on 39 minutes but Javlon Anorov pulled one back almost immediately, although the holders kept their nerve to see out the win.

Tasisat underlined their credentials as one of the tournament’s favourites from the off and prolific marksman Tayebi twice came close in the early stages.

And Tayebi, I.R. Iran’s top scorer in their AFC Futsal Championship-winning side in Uzbekistan in February, did not have to wait long to open his account when he stabbed the ball past goalkeeper Rustam Umarov in the fourth minute.

Almalyk fought hard to stay in the game and leveled on 12 minutes after Abdumavlyanov side-footed home Davron Choriev’s square ball, before he then notched his brace with a low angled shot from the left a minute later to stun the holders.

Umarov in the Almalyk goal pulled off a string of good saves but was unable to prevent Tasisat equalising four minutes before the interval when Abbasi spun and fired into the back of the net, and only the woodwork prevented the same player giving his side the lead shortly after.

The 2015 semi-finalists continued to dominate possession, though, and eventually drew level two minutes before the interval when Bahadori rocketed the ball into the top corner to give the outstanding Ali no chance.

Abou had a chance to restore Dibba’s advantage early in the second half but was denied by Duraid, before Bachay missed an open goal down the other end as the tie remained in the balance.

NAFIT began to retake control and both Farhad Tavakoli and Firas Mohammed struck the woodwork in quick succession as the Iraqi side cranked up the pressure.

Haitham Abbas’ team then got the goal they deserved on 29 minutes when Bachay’s low effort found the bottom corner to put them in front for the first time.

But Dibba stunned their opponents just two minutes later as Al Hosani fired past Duraid from distance to set up a thrilling last 10 minutes.

Abou almost scored Dibba’s third three minutes from time but dinked narrowly over, before Bachay again hit the post in the last minute as the sides shared the spoils

Group B: Tasisat Daryaei (IRN) 4-3 (2-2) Almalyk FC (UZB)

The defending champions came out with intent after the restart and captain Vahid Shamsaee and Abbasi both came close early on, while goalkeeper Mostafa Nazari twice saved from Konstantin Sviridov down the other end.

Tasisat looked the more likely, though, and went back in front on 32 minutes when Abbasi tapped in Shamsaee’s cross-cum-shot from a yard out.

The Iranians almost opened up a two-goal advantage when Raeisi Majid lashed against the post.

Tayebi then scored his second with a neat back-heel from inside the box, before Almalyk captain Anorov ensured a nervy finish for Tasisat by netting from close in.

14

Jirawat Sornwichian scored at both ends as hosts Chonburi Bluewave opened their AFC Futsal Club Championship campaign with a hard-fought 6-3 victory over Australia’s Vic Vipers in Group A.

Shayan Alinejad opened the scoring for the Vipers against the run of play at Bangkok Arena only for a Jirawat double in the final five minutes of the half to see the hosts take a one-goal lead into the interval.

Chonburi doubled their advantage through Suphawut Thueanklang early in the second half, but Jonathan Barrientos and a Jirawat own goal restored parity for the Vipers.

Sarawut Jaipech then put Chonburi back in front with eight minutes remaining before Barrientos turned into his own net and Sorasak Phoonjungreed wrapped up the scoring as the hosts claimed all three points.

Cheered on by a vocal home support, Chonburi’s star man Suphawut tested goalkeeper Christos Apostolakis with his powerful effort from distance in the first minute, before Apiwat Chaemcharoen drew a fine low save out of the Vipers’ custodian five minutes in.

But the Vipers then took a surprise lead on eight minutes after sluggish defending by Chonburi allowed Alinejad to nudge the ball home from a yard out.

The hosts were dominating possession but struggling to break down a resolute Vipers backline as captain Nattavut Madyalan fired wide, while Suttiroj Natthaphon and Apiwat saw efforts from close in denied

Group A : Chonburi Bluewave (THA)6-3 (2-1) Vic Vipers (AUS)

by the scrambling Vipers defenders when they looked certain to score. But the Thai side finally equalised on 16 minutes through Jirawat’s wonderful left-foot strike, before he then slid the ball under Apostolakis a minute later to make it 2-1 much to the delight of the Chonburi fans.

Two minutes after the restart Suphawut, the leading scorer with 14 goals in Thailand’s third-place finish at the AFC Futsal Championship earlier in the year, scored his first of the campaign from close in following good work by Brazilian Xapa and Jirawat.

Just as it looked like Chonburi would take firm control, though, Barrientos’ fizzing effort from distance found the back of the net two minutes later, before his corner on 28 minutes was diverted into his own net by the unfortunate Jirawat to leave the tie firmly in the balance.

Jirawat and Suphawut both struck the woodwork as Chonburi responded well, but they had goalkeeper Katawut Hankampa to thank for a string of fine saves at the midway stage of the half.

And in what was now a thrilling contest the hosts restored their lead on 32 minutes when Sarawut finished from Apiwat’s centre from the left before another Apiwat cross, this time from the right, came off Barrientos for the second own goal of the match.

Apiwat then claimed his third assist of the second half when he teed up Sorasak with two minutes remaining to round off the scoring and a memorable encounter.

Abdullah Salem and Mohamed Al-Suhaiqi both bagged braces as Al-Sadd sealed their qualification to the AFC Futsal Club Championship quarter-finals after just one game with a 4-0 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Taipower FC in Group D in turn eliminated their opponents.

The Qatari side had the better of the first half and took a deserved lead on 15 minutes through Salem, before he doubled their advantage seven minutes after the restart.

Al-Suhaiqi put the game beyond doubt with a double midway through the half to move Al-Sadd to the top of Group D and leave them needing only a draw against Vietnam’s Sanna Khanh Hoa FC in order to advance to the last eight as group winners.

After suffering a 3-0 reversal to Sanna in the tournament’s opening game, Taipower went early kick-off needing at least a point to keep alive their quarter-final chances.

In an even first 10 minutes it was Al-Sadd’s Brazilian Flavio who was instigating the best of the play, and he shot narrowly wide in the eighth minute after doing well to create space for himself.

As the half wore on Al-Sadd began to control the pace of the tie and captain Mohamed Ismail curled just wide from Amro Abdelaal’s corner on 12 minutes, before being denied by an excellent save from Chiang Yung-Hsuan soon after.

But the deadlock was finally broken five minutes before the interval when Ismail turned provider to allow Salem to tap home from close in as the 2010 runners-up took a one-goal lead into the break.

The West Asians began the second half strongly with both Abdelaal and Ismail coming close in the opening five minutes, before the captain again teed up Salem for his double on 27 minutes.

As one-way traffic ensued, Al-Suhaiqi tapped in Mohssein’s shot from distance a minute later and then fired in a fourth with eight minutes remaining.

Flavio struck the woodwork and Sultan Al-Shahwani was thwarted by the outrushing Chiang as Al-Sadd continued to push forward as Taipower’s debut tournament was brought to a miserable end.

Group D: Al-Sadd (QAT)4-0 (1-0)Taipower FC (TPE)

A second-half equaliser from Brazilian Diogo helped China’s Dalian Yuan Dynasty claim a 1-1 draw with Dibba Al Hissin in Group C of the AFC Futsal Club Championship.

Dalian had the better of the opening period at Bangkok Arena but it was the United Arab Emirates’ Dibba who went into the break a goal to the good after Ahmed Abdalla struck on 15 minutes.

Diogo then scored with five minutes to play to leave Group C firmly in the balance with Dibba a point ahead of Dalian and Iraq’s NAFIT Al-Wasat, who face off against each other.

Dalian came out the blocks strongly and almost scored one of the early contenders for goal of the tournament inside two minutes when Zhao Liang’s corner was beautifully volleyed goalwards by Geng Deyang, only for Dibba ‘keeper Hassan Ali to palm over.

Ali, who was outstanding in Dibba’s opening-day draw with NAFIT, was again on hand midway through the half, this time denying Ding Shunjie from distance.

Group C: Dalian Yuan Dynasty FC (CHN)1-1 (0-1) Dibba Al Hissin SCC (UAE)

Match Day 2

16

But just as they did in their Group C opener, Dibba proved they were made of stern stuff and took the lead against the run of play when Abdalla side-footed home after neat build-up play from Karim Abou.

The Chinese side came back strongly and Tomoaki Watanabe lashed against the bar a minute later as Dibba clung on to their advantage.

Dalian had the better of the early second-half possession but created little by way of clear-cut opportunities, and it was the Emiratis who could have stretched their lead when captain Hamad Al-Ghoul burst forward before seeing his shot parried out by goalkeeper Feng Xiaoyu. The West Asians came agonisingly close midway through the half after

a wonderful one-two between Mario Claudio and Abdalla Al-Khaaldi left the Portuguese through on goal, but he side-footed just wide of the left post.

But Dalian then leveled things up with five minutes to play when captain Wang Hongwei laid into the path of Diogo to confidently dispatch past Ali and set up an exciting finale.

The Chinese side then pushed for the winner and power-play player Zhao was prevented from doing so only by the brilliance of Ali in the final minute when he looked certain to score.

A Konstantin Sviridov equaliser kept Almalyk FC’s AFC Futsal Club Championship quarter-final dream alive as the Uzbek side claimed an enthralling 2-2 draw with Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen in Group B at Bangkok Arena.

Almalyk gained the early advantage through Jamoliddin Sharipov but were pegged back almost immediately as Khaled Takaji levelled, before grabbing his brace as half-time approached to give Al Mayadeen a deserved lead at the interval.

Sviridov (pictured, in blue shirt) made it all square on 30 minutes, but despite both teams having further chances, neither could find the all-important winner.

The result leaves the two sides level on one point, two behind group leaders Tasisat Daryaei of Islamic Republic of Iran, with Al Mayadeen needing a point against defending champions Tasisat when they face off in the final Group B clash.

In a lively opening few minutes Sviridov hammered against the woodwork from distance, before Sharipov coolly slotted past goalkeeper Hussein Hamadani shortly after to put the Uzbeks in front. But Al Mayadeen were level less than 60 seconds later after Takaji neatly finished Ali Tneich’s square ball as the tournament looked set to stage one of its most open encounters to date.

Serbian Dragan Tomic then rocketed against the Almalyk bar on seven minutes, and Rustam Umarov expertly saved from Tneich as Al Mayadeen took control of the game.

The West Asians enjoyed the majority of the possession and went in front for the first time just seconds before half-time when Takaji beat Umarov from a narrow angle.

Almalyk came out after the restart in search of the equaliser that would keep them in the competition, but Sviridov was unable to divert Shuhrat Tojiboev’s powerfully driven cross-cum-shot into the back of the net from just a yard out on 22 minutes.

But the Central Asians again had Umarov to thank when he was down quickly to tip Tomic’s toe-poke round the post as Almalyk remained in the contest.

Tneich then missed an open goal when he hit the post from a yard out after sloppy defending almost cost the Uzbeks, before Farkhod Abdumavlyanov saw his effort from close in come back off the bar down the other end.

Almalyk equalised midway through the half, though, as Sharipov teed up Sviridov to tap home, and Abdumavlyanov almost won the game with five minutes to play but his effort hit the side netting.

Yoshio Sakai’s second-half equaliser saw Japan’s Nagoya Oceans secure a 2-2 draw with Vic Vipers of Australia in Group A of the AFC Futsal Club Championship to keep both sides’ chances of reaching the last eight alive.

Two-time champions Nagoya took a one-goal lead into the break at Bangkok Arena after Tomoki Yoshikawa’s piledriver, before Shayan Alinejad and Adam Cooper gave the Vipers a second-half advantage.

Sakai (pictured, right) restored parity soon after to leave Nagoya needing a point in their final Group A game against hosts Chonburi Bluewave – who advanced to the last eight as a result of the draw – to progress at the Vipers’ expense.

Nagoya started confidently but struggled to create any clear-cut chances and it was the Vipers who could have gone in front in the eighth minute when captain Jonathan Barrientos intercepted a cross-field pass by Sakai and burst through on goal, only to see goalkeeper Yushi Sekiguchi get the better of the one-on-one duel.

The tournament’s most decorated side then almost broke the deadlock midway through the half, but Sakai was unfortunate to see his neat effort come back off the post.

The Australians had another chance to open the scoring but, after Sekiguchi had parried out Cooper’s goalbound effort, Alinejad was unable to add to his opening-day goal against Chonburi as he tapped wide.

Group A: Nagoya Oceans (JPN)2-2 (1-0)Vic Vipers (AUS)

Five minutes before the interval the first goal did eventually arrive as Yoshikawa blasted home a stunning effort from distance after latching onto Kiyoto Yagi’s corner from the left.

Cooper came inches away from levelling the scores shortly after the restart when his left-foot curler just missed the top right corner.

Nagoya pushed to open up a two-goal advantage but were largely limited to efforts from distance with Christos Apostolakis saving well from captain Ryuta Hoshi midway through the half.

But the Vipers levelled just seconds later when Barrientos’ chipped ball over the top was headed in by Alinejad for his second goal of the tournament.

After a string of good saves from Sekiguchi, Cooper completed a dramatic turnaround on 32 minutes by firing in from the right touchline after Barrientos’ short corner. But the Japanese side were soon level as Sakai bundled in Yoshikawa’s centre with seven minutes to play.

Nagoya then opted to use Ryohei Ando as a power-play player as they pushed for the winner in the dying minutes but to no avail.

18

Nguyen Quoc Bao’s late goal ensured Vietnam’s Sanna Khanh Hoa FC advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship as Group D winners after a 3-2 victory over Al-Sadd at Bangkok Arena saw them leapfrog their opponents into top spot.

In a lively first period Sanna’s Tran Van Thanh’s opener was cancelled out by Abdullah Salem, only for the Vietnamese side to hit back immediately through Phan Khac Chi and go into the interval a goal up.

Al-Sadd dominated the second-half possession but rarely threatened to equalise until captain Mohamed Ismail popped up with two minutes remaining, only for Quoc Bao to win it with a minute to go as the Qataris were made to settle for the runner-up qualification berth.

NAFIT Al-Wasat of Iraq recorded a resounding 5-1 victory over China’s Dalian Yuan Dynasty to advance to the AFC Futsal Club Championship quarter-finals on top of Group C and in turn eliminate their opponents.

With the winners guaranteed to progress as table-toppers, it was NAFIT who took a slender one-goal advantage into the interval at Bangkok Arena thanks to Mustafa Bachay’s fine strike.

Early second-half goals from Hasan Ali, Bachay and Ghodrat Bahadori all but confirmed NAFIT’s passage as group winners. Wang Hongwei pulled one back for Dalian, before Farhad Tavakoli added a fifth.

NAFIT will next play Group D runners-up Al-Sadd of Qatar in the last eight, while Dibba Al Hissin of the United Arab Emirates sealed second place in Group C following the result and will now take on Vietnam’s Sanna Khanh Hoa FC in the quarter-finals.

Haitham Abbas’ NAFIT started on the front foot with Iranian duo Bahadori and Tavakoli looking lively, while Waleed Khalid forced goalkeeper Feng Xiaoyu into a save inside five minutes.

Needing a win to advance as table-toppers, Sanna had the better of the opening exchanges and went in front on six minutes when Van Thanh drilled in a fine shot across goalkeeper Ali Ibrahim and into the bottom right corner for his second goal of the campaign.

But Al-Sadd came back into the tie as the half grew on and Brazilian playmaker Flavio struck the side-netting, before Ismail’s effort was cleared off the line by Le Anh Tuan soon after.

The Qatari side got their equaliser in the 15th minute as Salem tapped in Saad Bilal’s square ball for his third goal in two games. But just seconds later Sanna restored their advantage when Khac Chi fired an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net to stun their opponents.

Al-Sadd came out strongly after the restart and Ismail drew a save from goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Y Hoa five minutes in.

Sanna sat back, though, as Al-Sadd struggled to create goalscoring opportunities and Khac Chi almost stretched their lead with after a counter-attack with eight minutes remaining but Ibrahim was down well to save with his legs.

But just as it looked like Sanna were going to see out the win, Ismail levelled from close in on 38 minutes, before Quoc Bao claimed a dramatic victory when he scored from inside the area to the delight of the Vietnamese bench.

But Dalian would have gone in front had it not been for the brilliance of NAFIT ‘keeper Ahmed Duraid, who saved at point-blank range from Zhang Wen midway through the half.

Just seconds later the Chinese side were behind as Bachay unleashed a bullet of a shot from distance that gave Feng no chance as he chalked up his second goal of the campaign.

The Iraqi side continued to push forward in search of a second and Ali drew a flying saved out of the Dalian custodian just before half-time.

NAFIT then gave themselves breathing space a minute after the restart when a clever kick-in by Khalid caught the Dalian defence off guard and Ali rounded Feng to slot home.

And the result was put beyond doubt within a minute when Bachay tapped in his second goal after Feng had saved from Khalid, before Bahadori took advantage of Dalian’s power-play by side-footing into an empty net from inside his own half.

Khalid then rolled an effort against the post during another power-play as NAFIT threatened to run riot, while Tomoaki Watanabe struck the woodwork down the other end.

Wang pulled one back for Dalian on 28 minutes, but Tavakoli restored the four-goal cushion with five minutes remaining to round off the scoring.

A Hossein Tayebi treble helped secure a 6-2 victory for defending champions Tasisat Daryaei over Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen as the Iranians advanced to the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship as Group B winners while their opponents were eliminated.

Needing just a point to top the group, Tasisat went in front as half-time approached at Bangkok Arena when Tayebi rounded off a fine flowing move, before the forward scored a quick-fire double early in the second half to complete his hat-trick.

Dragan Tomic pulled one back soon after and Mohamad Kobeissy continued the comeback, only for Alireza Vafaei to score twice and Vahid Shamsaee to round off the scoring to mean Uzbekistan’s Almalyk FC qualified ahead of Al Mayadeen by virtue of superior goal difference.

Al Mayadeen had the first sight on goal inside two minutes when Serbian Tomic hit the top of the crossbar after being picked out by Khaled Takaji.

Tasisat began to take hold of the game, though, and Tayebi made space for himself on the edge of the area before firing just wide midway through the half.

The forward then almost broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when his silky flick was expertly saved by Hussein Hamadani, before he came even closer a minute later by lashing against the post.

The holders then took the lead a minute before the interval after a lovely move involving captain Shamsaee, Mohammad Shajari and Tayebi.

Veteran Shamsaee’s pass was dummied by Tayebi before he spun into the middle to get on the end of Shajari’s centre for an easy finish.

Tasisat opened up a two-goal gap just seconds after the restart when Reza Sangsefidi broke through the middle before playing in Vafaei, who then found Tayebi for another tap-in as the hitman moved to the top of the tournament’s scoring charts with four goals.

And Tayebi then completed his hat-trick on 23 minutes when he powered past Hamadani, only for Tomic to restore hope two minutes later with a finish from close in.

Kobeissy pulled another one back with 15 minutes still to play, and Tomic then saw his effort come back off the inside of the post on 12 minutes as a nervy encounter ensued.

But Vafaei tapped in with four minutes remaining before rounding Hamadani and tapping in to put the result beyond doubt.

Shamsaee then capitalised on a power-play to lob into an empty net from his own half as the holders made it two wins from two.

Group B: Tasisat Daryaei (IRN)6-2 (1-0)Al Mayadeen (LIB)

Suphawut Thueanklang scored one and made another as hosts Chonburi Bluewave claimed a 3-1 win over Nagoya Oceans to book their passage to the AFC Futsal Club Championship quarter-finals as Group A table-toppers while the Japanese club advanced in second place.

The home side gained an early advantage inside a vibrant Bangkok Arena when Jirawat Sornwichian tapped home, before Ryohei Ando equalised early in the second half.

Suphawut then restored Chonburi’s lead with a wonderful free-kick before Jetsada Chudech curled in a delightful effort to round off the scoring.

Next up for Chonburi is Uzbekistan’s Almalyk FC in the last eight while Nagoya will be tasked with defending champions Tasisat Daryaei of Islamic Republic of Iran in a repeat of their 2015 quarter-final.

Roared on by a passionate home support, 2013 winners Chonburi opened the scoring in the second minute when Jirawat got on the end of Suttiroj Natthapon’s corner from the left for his third of the continental campaign.

The hosts were in a confident mood and Nattavut Madyalan almost doubled their advantage on six minutes but goalkeeper Yushi Sekiguchi pulled off a superb reactionary save with his leg to deny the Chonburi captain, before the custodian produced an even better block to keep out Jirawat’s goalbound effort.

Group A: Chonburi Bluewave (THA)3-1 (1-0)Nagoya Oceans (JPN)Two-time champions Nagoya came close to levelling midway through the half when Kiyoto Yagi stabbed just wide from Brazilian Serginho’s cross, and Chonburi keeper Katawut Hankampa had to be at full stretch to palm wide Kento Tamura’s effort from distance on 14 minutes.

Nagoya came out with renewed vigour after the restart and Ando’s clever little dink over Katawut levelled the scoreline on 25 minutes.

But parity lasted just two minutes as the prolific Suphawut, who had endured a quiet first half, rocketed in a free-kick to send the crowd into raptures.

Suphawut then turned provider with six minutes remaining with a beautiful long ball to Jetsada, who finished with aplomb into the top corner to open up a two-goal lead.

Nagoya knew if they conceded one more they would be eliminated after having scored fewer goals than Australia’s Vic Vipers, but they managed to hold on to progress alongside their opponents.

Goalkeeper Hassan Ali scored an audacious length-of-the-pitch goal as Dibba Al Hissin SCC of the United Arab Emirates booked their place in the semi-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship with a 6-2 quarter-final victory over Vietnam’s Sanna Khanh Hoa FC at Bangkok Arena.

Both sides had first-half chances but Dibba’s Mario Claudio’s volley off the post was the closest either came to breaking the deadlock, before Nguyen Trung Nam put Sanna in front shortly after the interval.

The Emiratis levelled through Abdalla Al-Khaaldi and captain Hamad Mohamed completed the turnaround on 28 minutes, before Al Khaaldi’s double gave Dibba breathing space.

Le Anh Tuan pulled one back but Abdalla Al-Hosani, Ali and Claudio all scored from inside the Dibba half during power-plays as the Emiratis advanced to the last four at the first time of asking.

Dibba had the better of the opening exchanges and came close on four minutes when Mohamed volleyed Karim Abou Zeid’s corner goalwards, but goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Y Hoa was equal to the challenge.

The Emirati side then came even closer on eight minutes as Abou Zeid picked out Claudio, who saw his volley rebound back off the post.

Sanna came back into the game at the midway stage of the half and Phan Khac Chi fired straight at ‘keeper Ali from close in, before captain Mai Thanh Dat side-footed just wide soon after.

QF1: Sanna Khanh HOA FC (VIE)2-6 (0-0)Dibba Al Hissin SCC (UAE)

A minute after the restart the Vietnamese team opened the scoring when a lovely through-ball by Khac Chi allowed Trung Nam to slot home his second of the tournament.

But Dibba equalised on 26 minutes after Mohamed’s cross-cum-shot was tapped in by Al-Khaaldi as the game sprung into life.

Two minutes later the team from the UAE moved into the lead as Mohamed’s powerful free-kick flew past the unsighted Dinh Y Hoa.

Dibba opened up a two-goal lead eight minutes from time when Al-Khaaldi controlled Ali’s long ball up the pitch before turning and playing into the back of the net for his second of the tie.

Ali’s kick over the top then sailed inches over the crossbar as an increasingly desperate Sanna almost got caught out on a power-play.

Sanna did pull one back on 34 minutes, though, when Anh Tuan got on the end of Trung Nam’s cross, only for Dibba to move two ahead once more as Al-Hosani capitalised on another Vietnamese power-play by scoring from well inside his own half.

In the final minute, goalkeeper Ali scored from a long kick from inside his own area while Claudio rounded off the scoring with yet another from inside the Dibba half.

NAFIT Al-Wasat advanced to the semi-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship for the second year in succession following a 2-1 victory over Qatar’s Al-Sadd in quarter-final.

Al-Sadd went in front after 10 minutes through Saad Bilal only for Iraq’s NAFIT to take control of the game and go into the break a goal to the good after strikes from Mustafa Bachay and Hasan Ali.

The Qatari side went in search of an equalizer in the second half but goalkeeper Ahmed Duraid was in inspired form as NAFIT held out to return to the last four.

After a quiet opening ten minutes at Bangkok Arena, Al-Sadd broke the deadlock at the midway stage of the half when Ahmad Mollaali’s centre was turned in by Bilal for his first goal of the campaign.

But NAFIT then cranked up the pressure and goalkeeper Ahmad Khalil pulled off a wonderful one-handed save to stop Waleed Khalid’s goal-bound effort after the striker had linked up well with Farhad Tavakoli.

Good footwork from Khalid outside the area then took Khalil out of the game, but when Ali slid across goal to Bachay, Mollaali was in the right place at the right time to block and keep his side’s lead intact.

QF 2: NAFIT Al- Wasat (IRQ)2-1 (2-1) Al-Sadd SC (QAT)

But parity was restored three minutes before the interval when Bachay rocketed in an unstoppable effort from distance for his fourth goal in three games.

The 2015 semi-finalists then went into half-time 2-1 up after Ali scored a certain contender for goal of the tournament two minutes later.

Iranian Tavakoli played a beautiful cross-field ball for Khalid, whose pacey cross on the bounce from the right touchline was met by the head of Ali to give Khalil in the Al-Sadd goal no chance.

NAFIT could have extended their advantage two minutes after the restart but Khalid failed to connect properly to Tavakoli’s cross, before Hasan Dakheel’s thunderous shot was tipped onto the bar by Khalil.

Al-Sadd almost drew level with five minutes to play when Abdullah Salem slipped into Mohamed Al-Suhaiqi but Duraid was out well to deny him.

The custodian then pulled off an even better save soon after by getting down low to his right to deny captain Mohamed Ismail, before tipping wide from power-play player Flavio with two minutes remaining and again saving with his foot in a frantic final few seconds.

Serginho scored the winning spot kick as Nagoya Oceans upset the odds to defeat defending champions Tasisat Daryaei of Islamic Republic of Iran 3-2 on penalties after the sides had played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the AFC Futsal Club Championship.

The holders struck first in the sixth minute through the tournament’s leading scorer Hossein Tayebi but were pegged back by a dogged Nagoya as Yoshio Sakai’s goal four minutes from half-time took the sides in level.

Saeid Abbasi missed a second-half penalty for Tasisat before Koichi Saito put Nagoya in front early in extra time only for veteran Vahid Shamsaee to level in the second period.

After four successful spot kicks Abbasi’s miserable evening continued as Yushi Sekiguchi kept him out and Brazilian Serginho powered home.Up next for Nagoya is the United Arab Emirates’ Dibba Al Hissin, who ran out 6-2 victors over Al-Sadd of Qatar in their quarter-final to advance to the last four of the continental competition on their tournament debut.

In a repeat of the 2015 quarter-final, Nagoya began full of purpose and Sakai fired just wide when he had their first sight on goal inside two minutes.

Tasisat came back strongly and Tayebi was denied by an excellent save from Sekiguchi on five minutes, before he bundled Reza Sangsefidi’s low cross from the left into the back of the net seconds later for his sixth goal of the campaign.

Two-time champions Nagoya almost equalised on 12 minutes after Serginho’s long ball was headed into the path of Masaya Hashimoto by Kiyoto Yagi, but Tasisat keeper Mostafa Nazari saved well from the purple-haired frontman.

QF 3: Tasisat Daryaei FSC (IRN)2-2 a.e.t. (1-1,1-1)2-3 PSO Nagoya Oceans (JPN)

But the Japanese side deservedly made it all square in the 16th minute when Sakai’s clever flick with his back to goal found the back of the net for his second goal in three games.

Full of energy, Nagoya were again quick out of the blocks after the restart, refusing to give their clearly rattled opponents any time on the ball and captain Ryuta Hoshi fired just wide on 25 minutes.

Tasisat were awarded the first penalty of the tournament in the 27th minute when Kento Tamura upended Abbasi, who subsequently saw his spot-kick saved by Sekiguchi before hitting the post with the rebound.

But as the half wore on it was Nagoya who began to control the flow of the play and Saito’s powerful left-foot effort was kept out by a brilliant one-handed save from Nazari with three minutes to play.

Nagoya then went in front a minute into extra time when Saito finished Tomoki Yoshikawa’s cross from close in.

Abbasi drilled just wide early in the second period as Tasisat pushed for an equaliser, before Shamsaee blasted home from distance on a power-play with two minutes to play as the game went to penalties.

Sangsefidi scored for Tasisat but Ryohei Ando levelled, before Raeisi Majid and Yoshikawa also netted. Abbasi then missed again from the spot to allow Serginho to win it with a well-struck penalty.

Hosts Chonburi Bluewave progressed to the semi-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship after running out 4-1 winners over Uzbekistan’s Almalyk FC.

Almalyk opened the scoring almost immediately through Jamoliddin Sharipov only for Jetsada Chudech and Suphawut Thueanklang to hit back, before Jirawat Sornwichian gave Chonburi a two-goal lead at the break.

The Uzbek side put the hosts under intense second-half pressure but to no avail and Xapa rounded off the scoring with just under five minutes remaining to cap a memorable night for his team.

Chonburi’s go to the semi-final against NAFIT Al-Wasat after the Iraqi side edged past Qatar’s Al-Sadd 2-1 in their earlier quarter-final clash.

Almalyk stunned a vocal Bangkok Arena by going in front in the first minute when Sharipov tapped home his second of the tournament, before Chonburi’s Xapa almost put into his own net.

But in a frantic few seconds Thanatorn Santanaprasit struck the bar twice in quick succession in the fourth minute as the hosts fought back.

Davron Choriev was then sent off for a second bookable offence after fouling Suphawut to leave the Uzbek side down to four men for two minutes.

Despite not being able to capitalise on their man advantage, Chonburi equalised on 12 minutes when Jetsada delivered a stunning finish from a narrow angle for his second goal in two games.

QF 4: Chonburi Bluewave (THA)4-1 (3-1) Almalyk FC (UZB)

And the noise levels in the stadium were raised even further when Jirawat held the ball up well on the edge of the area before playing in Suphawut to side-foot past Rustam Umarov in the Almalyk goal.

Jirawat then scored his fourth of the campaign when he finished from Xapa’s superb cross-field ball two minutes before the interval to put the hosts in a commanding position.

Captain Nattavut Madyalan lashed against the bar as half-time approached as the game began to have a one-sided feel to it.

But Almalyk should have pulled one back on 26 minutes when Sharipov centred for captain Javlon Anorov, who completely missed the ball with the goal at his mercy, before goalkeeper Katawut Hankampa was down quickly to thwart Andrey Shlema shortly after.

Sharipov then hit the post midway through the half as the Thai champions’ lead suddenly started to look less convincing. Now throwing everything at the hosts, Almalyk’s Farkhod Abdumavlyanov burst through the middle and laid off to Shlema, but Katawut reacted quickly and the ball somehow stayed out despite both Shlema and Makhsud Fayzullaev trying to force it over the line.

The result was then put beyond doubt with four minutes to play when Xapa robbed Konstantin Sviridov of the ball before racing through and slotting confidently under Umarov.

Japan’s Nagoya Oceans advanced to the final of the AFC Futsal Club Championship for the third time after a 3-1 victory over Dibba Al Hissin SCC of the United Arab Emirates in the first semi-final.

Dibba’s Karim Abou Zeid broke the deadlock early on at Bangkok Arena, only for Yoshio Sakai, Ryohei Ando and Tomoki Yoshikawa to put Nagoya 3-1 up at the interval.

A quieter second half ensued as Nagoya sat back on their lead and Dibba rarely threatened to strike back as Pedro Costa’s side comfortably claimed their first win of the competition in normal time to progress to their first final since 2014.

Dibba opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Abou Zeid’s drilled free-kick went through the legs of Nagoya goalkeeper Yushi Sekiguchi.

Nagoya, playing in a record fifth semi-final, responded well and levelled midway through the half after Sakai played a give-and-go with Hernan Maedonchi before bundling home from close in.

Costa’s team then went in front two minutes later as Yoshikawa’s powerfully driven free-kick from the left was diverted goalwards by Ando for his second of the tournament.

Now in almost complete control, Nagoya stretched their lead further a minute before half-time when Yoshikawa ran onto Koichi Saito’s through-ball and dinked beautifully into the back of the net to put his side in a commanding position.

The second half began tentatively with Dibba refraining from throwing everything at their opponents and Nagoya playing with less pace and vigour than in the opening period as they appeared happy to sit on their lead.

Dibba captain Hamad Mohamed then forced Sekiguchi into his first save of the half in the 29th minute, before the custodian denied Abou Zeid with his feet as he raced through on goal a minute later as the Emiratis began to threaten.

As the clock ticked down Dibba remained patient, looking for an opening in the Nagoya defence without opting to use a power-play player until there were just over four minutes to go.

Then, with Mario Claudio sent on as the extra man, the Portuguese teed up Mohamed to fire just wide as Dibba finally went for broke.

But the Nagoya backline remained firm as Dibba struggled to create any clear-cut chances and the Japanese side saw out the victory to book a return to the final.

Ghodrat Bahadori double helped Iraq’s NAFIT Al-Wasat come from behind to stun hosts Chonburi Bluewave with a 4-1 win in the semi-final of the AFC Futsal Club Championship on to book a place final with Japan’s Nagoya Oceans.

After starting nervously at Bangkok Arena, 2013 champions Chonburi opened the scoring on 16 minutes through Jirawat Sornwichian’s fifth goal of the campaign, before Bahadori levelled with just a minute to play to send the tie into extra-time.

Chonburi’s Xapa then saw red for handling on the line to allow Bahadori to complete the turnaround from the spot, before Chonburi captain Nattavut Madyalan was also dismissed.

Farhad Tavakoli and Waleed Khalid both scored during second-half power-plays as NAFIT lined up a clash with Nagoya, who ran out 3-1 winners over Dibba Al Hissin SCC of the United Arab Emirates in earlier semi-final.

NAFIT had the first chance inside 60 seconds when Tavakoli called goalkeeper Katawut Hankampa into action to push away his powerful shot from distance.

The hosts grew into the game and started to see more of the ball, and NAFIT ‘keeper Ahmed Duraid pulled off an acrobatic flying save to deny Suphawut Thueanklang on eight minutes before parrying out Jirawat’s pile-driver just seconds later.

Katawut again got the better of his personal duel with Tavakoli on 12 minutes, this time getting down low to save the Iranian’s fizzing strike from the right touchline.

The deadlock was then almost broken in stunning style in the 15th minute when Xapa squared to Suphawut, who rocketed against the crossbar from well outside the NAFIT penalty area.

Brazilian Xapa then dinked a beautiful pass into the path of Jirawat a minute later and, still with plenty to do, Chonburi’s top scorer produced a composed left-foot finish to lift the ball over Duraid and put his side a goal to the good.

Xapa was again at the centre of the action two minutes after the restart when a wonderful one-two with Jirawat left him through on goal, but Duraid saved with his legs.

The Iraqi side were a constant threat, though, and Khalid raced through on goal on 24 minutes and, with only Katawut to beat, struck the post, before the Chonburi stopper kept out the striker’s goal-bound effort soon after.

Chonburi then could have opened up a two-goal lead but Jirawat was thwarted by Duraid from close in following good build-up play involving Xapa and Apiwat Chaemcharoen.

NAFIT then went all out with four minutes to play, deploying Saif Abdulmalek as a power-play player, and Chonburi again had Katawut to thank when he saved from Bahadori before Abdulmalek missed from close in.

Sorasak Phoonjungreed missed a chance to seal the game for Chonburi with just over a minute to play, and the hosts were made to pay when Bahadori curled in a stunning equaliser in the last minute.

Khalid robbed Suphawut of possession early in extra-time before teeing up Bahadori only for Katawut to come to his team’s rescue once more.

But Xapa was then dismissed when, after heading Khalid’s effort off the line, he handled Mustafa Bachay’s follow-up strike onto the crossbar.

Bahadori made no mistake with the ensuing spot kick to silence the home support, and the hosts were given a mountain to climb when Nattavut was sent off for his second bookable offence.

Chonburi were then caught out on a power-play and Tavakoli finished from inside the NAFIT half, before Khalid did likewise to round off the scoring with less than two minutes to play.

3rd/4th Placing

Hosts Chonburi Bluewave ended their AFC Futsal Club Championship campaign on a high by wrapping up third place with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Dibba Al Hissin SCC of the United Arab Emirates at Bangkok Arena.

Mario Claudio put the Emiratis in front early on before Chonburi hit back through Thanatorn Santanaprasit and Sorasak Phoonjungreed to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Jirawat Sornwichian scored a second-half penalty before Suphawut Thueanklang, Jirawat’s second goal and Ampol Srirageaw rounded off a resounding scoreline.

Dibba opened the scoring on four minutes when Karim Abou Zeid centred for Claudio, who took one touch before finding the back of the net from close in for his third of the tournament.

Peerapat Kaewwilai then struck the bar in the sixth minute and Apiwat Chaemcharoen forced goalkeeper Hassan Ali to get down low to save soon after as the hosts fought back.

Ali saved from Chonburi’s top scorer Jirawat from distance on 12 minutes but the 2013 champions were struggling to get behind the Dibba backline.

The home side did draw level in the 15th minute, though, when Sorasak slipped the ball through to Thanatorn and, after Ali had failed to gather, he side-footed home his first of the campaign.

Apiwat then played Suphawut through on goal and the striker again called Ali into action, before he robbed Abou Zeid of possession a minute later to race through on goal only to see the custodian deny him once more.

Now dominating the tie, Chonburi went in front two minutes before half-time as Sorasak tapped in from Peerapat’s cross-cum-shot for his first goal since the opening game of the tournament.

The hosts could have stretched their lead early in the second half after Ali had palmed out Suphawut’s long-range effort, but Jirawat failed to hit the target from a narrow angle.

Dibba captain Hamed Mohamed raced through on goal on 22 minutes but shot narrowly wide, before Jirawat missed another opportunity down the other end.

Ali then saved onto the post from Apiwat and denied Peerapat from close in as Chonburi looked to give themselves breathing space.

But the ball just wouldn’t go in for the hosts as Peerapat rocketed a free-kick against the post midway through the half.

Chonburi finally opened up a two-goal gap on 32 minutes after Dibba had conceded their sixth foul of the game, allowing Jirawat to score his sixth goal of the tournament from the penalty spot.

Suphawut then put the result beyond doubt when capitalising on a Dibba power-play to finish from inside his own half for his fourth goal in five games.

And Jirawat moved clear on the tournament’s scoring charts when he produced a composed finish after being played in by Suphawut, before Ampol bundled in from a yard out as Dibba capitulated

THE FINAL

Goalkeeper Yushi Sekiguchi scored from the spot before saving from Saif Abdulmalek as Japan’s Nagoya Oceans claimed the AFC Futsal Club Championship for a record third time with a 6-5 penalty shootout victory over NAFIT Al-Wasat of Iraq after the sides had played out a dramatic 4-4 draw in final at Bangkok Arena.

Tomoki Yoshikawa opened the scoring early on for Nagoya, only for Ghodrat Bahadori to level in the eighth minute. Koichi Saito restored the Japanese side’s advantage but Farhad Tavakoli made things all square at the interval.

NAFIT went in front with eight minutes to play through Hasan Dakheel, before Yoshio Sakai scored late to take the tie to extra-time. Dakheel’s double was then cancelled out by captain Ryuta Hoshi at the death to take the final into a shootout.

After both sides netted their first five penalties, Sekiguchi stepped up to produce a composed finish before saving from Abdulmalek as Nagoya added to their titles in 2011 and 2014.

Pedro Costa’s Nagoya started with intent and Yoshikawa drilled just wide in the second minute, before the two-time winners took the lead two minutes later.

Hoshi’s speculative strike from distance was not cleared properly by the NAFIT defence and Yoshikawa was in the right place at the right time to tap home his third goal of the tournament.

The 2015 semi-finalists responded well, though, and Tavakoli struck the post with his toe-poked attempt from outside the area, before Saito’s hurried clearance hit the top of the Nagoya crossbar.

Haitham Abbas’ side did then equalise in the eighth minute when Iranian Bahadori found the bottom corner with a wonderful side-footed effort for his fifth of the campaign.

The Japanese team retook the lead on 13 minutes when Serginho fired across the box for Saito to score from two yards out.

Bahadori had a stunning free-kick from distance was ruled out, but NAFIT then struck back with a contender for goal of the tournament.

Tavakoli’s wonderful turn by the halfway line set him free before a lovely give-and-go with Waleed Khalid ended with the Iranian finding the back of the net.

Nagoya began the second half on the front foot and Serginho’s shot across goal forced goalkeeper Ahmed Duraid to get down well to save with his legs four minutes in, before Hernan Maedonchi missed a golden opportunity by hitting the post from the Brazilian’s cross.

The Japanese team were dominating possession with NAFIT showing little of the attacking threat displayed in the opening period, and Kiyoto Yagi missed another chance from close in at the midway stage of the half.

And Nagoya were made to pay for their missed chances on 32 minutes as Dakheel chose the perfect moment to score his first goal of the competition when he tapped in Tavakoli’s cross.

Now chasing the game, Nagoya’s Ryohei Ando struck the top of the bar with seven minutes left and Costa then went for broke by using Ando as his power-play player with five minutes remaining.

Sakai then levelled with two minutes to play after excellent build-up play involving Yoshikawa and Yagi gave him an easy finish.

NAFIT went back in front in the 43rd minute when Dakheel’s shot was deflected in off the unfortunate Serginho with Sekiguchi stranded.

Ando again assumed the power-play role and called Duraid into action with two minutes remaining as a frantic finale ensued.

Then with just over a minute to play Nagoya were saved by Hoshi when the captain powered home from distance to send the tie to penalties. The first 10 penalties were all successful before Sekiguchi placed into the bottom corner and then went back in goal to save from the unfortunate Abdulmalek.

TECHNICAL TOPICS

Nagoya Oceans claimed the 2016 AFC Futsal Club Championship title after they defeated Nafit Al-Wasat 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out on the 23rd July 2016 in front of a packed Bangkok Arena Stadium. Working solidly as a unit, Nagoya Oceans scored 14 goals in 6 matches but also conceded 12. Five players put their name on the score sheet and their performances were convincing. However, in a closely contested final Nagoya Oceans could not afford any lapses when they took on the improved Nafit Al-Wasat.

Chonburi Bluewave showed that they were well prepared for the 3rd place match by beating their rival Dibba Al Hissin 6-1 comfortably.

It is widely agreed that the level of this competition was higher than previous years. The majority of teams worked more as a team, with fewer clubs relying on just a couple of “key players”. Teams tended to attack and defend as a unit. Matches were quicker and more physically demanding while players had to be mentally tougher to cope with changing situations and to fight for a win.

The average level of teams in this final championship was closer and as a result, each match became more difficult to predict. It was notable that the Central Asian teams improved while the East Asian teams had a slight setback.

There were plenty of decisive goals scored in the very late stage of matches or even in the last minute to determine the winner.

Clubs like Nagoya Oceans (JPN), NAFIT Al- Wasat (IRQ), Chonburi Bluewave (THA), NAFIT Al- Wasat (IRQ), Almalyk FC (UZB), and Tasisat Daryaei FSC (IRN) always performed as a unit although they also had some good individuals. Champions Nagoya Oceans (JPN) displayed plenty of outstanding players, however, they always worked as team in terms of attack and defence.

AFC Futsal Club Championship Thailand 2016 Technical Report and Statistics

35

Transition game played

Although the majority of teams did not apply high pressure tactics in the attacking half, most teams pressed aggressively at the moment they lost possession. This strategy needs good physical conditioning to implement successfully. On the other hand, those teams under pressure must react and move quickly in this transitional moment to create space to launch a counter attack.

Moreover, during many of the one-on-one encounters the players who were physically stronger gained the advantage.

Mentality plays a role

Some teams could not perform to their usual standard consistently due to inferior mental toughness while plenty showed a great desire to win to claim the victory.

Goalkeepers were often the key to success

Teams featuring a good goalkeeper were able to progress better, proving that the goalkeeper plays an important role in any match. A steady and fit goalkeeper with a strong mental approach serves not just as a leader in defence but also supports the attack. Many situations proved that he is the player who instills confidence in his defence by

saving goals, re-starting the attack and controlling the rhythm of the match. At every second he must have high levels of concentration to observe and perceive what is going to happen.

A well-prepared game plan

A well-prepared game plan can be a key element in success. Coaches have to analyse their potential opponents’ strengths & weaknesses before the tournament starts. And they should keep track of their opposition’s performances and game strategy at the different stages of the competition to create a specific game plan.

During the match, coaches studied or predicted what would most likely happen. This enabled them to react to that situation effectively, for example by calling for a time-out or changing players.

Fitness

Futsal has become more physical and there is a requirement to work on fitness and physique in order to compete with other teams. The game requires more speed and strength and, even though teams had a specific physical conditioning coach, fitness was a problem, which meant that movement off the ball was a problem. During the tournament, it became evident that physical condition affected other aspects of the games.

36

Pressing Game

An emphasis on pressing high up the opponent half led to a reduction in swift breaks.

The overall improvement in physical condition allowed teams to press higher up the pitch and exploit greater mobility off the ball. In the past, nearly all teams tended to concentrate defensive work into their own half, but in Bangkok saw a lot more sustained, aggressive pressing three-quarters of the way up the pitch. Thailand coach Rakphol Sainetngam agreed. “The tendency to defend deep and counter was not that visible in this tournament,” he said. “There was more high pressing and teams played with greater ambition.”

The technical observers detected a knock-on effect on styles of play. Higher defending, they argued, was the explanation for fewer transitions from deep defending into attacks. In other words, opportunities for quick counterattacks were reduced.

Sharing The Load

Attitudes varied on the appropriate division of labour in each squad.

The coaches had diverse approaches to the sharing of workloads. Nagoya coach Andrej Pedro Alexandre Silva Da Costa used ten outfielders in the first game against Vic Vipers and, in the second against Chonburi Bluewave, injected nine outfield players. At the other end of the scale, Chonburi coach Rakphol Sainetngam commented: “I got all 12 outfielders on during the first half of the first match, so that they could get a feel of the pitch and the competition. I think that is an important psychological aspect.”

Flexible Structures

There was a notable trend towards zonal marking.

Few of the teams in Bangkok had rigid playing structures. In line with the improvement of direct-attacking skills, most made constant switches between 1-3-1 and 1-4-0 systems, frequently using a 2-2

formation in the attacking third. The teams equipped to exert sustained high pressure usually did so in a 1-1-1-2 formation designed to disturb the opponent’s build up. The second and third rungs of defence were usually zonal – and there was a noticeable trend towards this style of defending rather than individual marking. The upward trend in fitness levels permitted greater mobility and positional flexibility. As Shahrzad observed: “We now see a lot of players who are specialists in one role, but have enough all-round qualities to cover the whole pitch.”

High level and high intensity games

Keeping a level head under pressure is a skill to learn like any other.

“It was noticeable that the players from the big leagues were better at coping with the intensity and maintaining their concentration.” This was the view of the AFC observers after examining some of the lapses which had proved crucial in certain games. The question was how best to train players to play at top level in front of huge crowds and to give them the emotional intelligence to deal with the situations they encounter.

Club Licensing

The first AFC Futsal Club Licensing and Planning Workshop has been successfully held in Japan and Islamic Republic of Iran. The Club Licensing System has been already adopted for the further development of the Futsal in Asia. This is the first step from the second phase of the AFC Futsal Development Programme following assessment visits across Asia. The main objectives of the AFC Futsal Club Licensing Regulations are to improve the level of professionalism in the futsal clubs in Asia, safeguarding the credibility and integrity of futsal clubs competitions, promoting sporting values in accordance with the principles of fair play and promoting transparency in the control, ownership and finances of clubs. The Futsal Club Licensing system will be introduced to 18 top Asian futsal countries by end of 2017.

MEDICAL REPORT

92

During the AFC Futsal Club Championship Thailand 2016, AFC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nisith Chowdhury together with Dr. Jimmy Chin Chee Ming managed the medical services and infrastructure at the Bangkok Arena, at related teams’ hotel and at the AFC Headquarters.

The excellent preparation by the LOC, led by LOC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Paisal Chantarapitak, contributed to the successful staging of the competition. The well-estalished healthcare services and infrastructure as well as the professional and experienced staff were beyond expectations.

The gathering of the Team Medical staffs prior to the tournament was an excellent platform to provide information on the medical services and infrastructure in-place during the competition. The anti-doping programme procedures were also explained. Consequently, the Team Medical staff were able to extend their full cooperation during the entire tournament.

Injuries and Illnesses Recording

Diagnosis of Injuries

Injuries Body Parts

The Team Physicians of the twelve (12) participating clubs were asked to report on a daily basis, both on non-match days and match days, all injuries and illnesses incurred during the tournament starting from the moment the clubs arrived at the venue.

The acceptance and compliance were remarkable, as demonstrated by the response rate of about 95%. The quality of the data collected during the tournament was excellent. The collected data were then entered into the AFC Administration System (AFCAS) by the AFC Medical Officers.

From the twenty (20) matches, a total of thirty-one (31) injuries were reported. This corresponded to a ratio of 1.5 injuries per match, which is higher when compared to the match injury incidence of 0.8 in 2015. It was also reported by the club medical personnel that a total of thirty-four (34) injuries occurred during the team’s training which had higher contacts than match days.

The majority of the injuries (77%) affected the lower extremity such as the thigh (19.4%), knee (19.4%) and ankle (19.4%). The most frequent diagnoses were contusions, sprains and laceration/abrasion.

Almost half of the injuries were caused by contact with another player (55%) and other injuries (35%) were due to non-contact trauma, recurrence of previous injuries and over use with sudden on-set. Based on the judgement of the club team physicians, 10% were caused by foul play (hidden or overt).

Medical cases have been monitored and recorded at the Bangkok Arena during match days and at the official teams and delegations’ hotels during non-match days. Minor cases attended to were from simple to severe headache, upper respiratory infections, sore throat without fever, simple cough and colds. There were also players who were treated on-site prior to referral to hospital for further investigation and treatment.

In accordance with the AFC in- competition doping control procedures, one (1) player per team was randomly selected to provide urine samples. A total of 26 urine samples were collected and analysed at the WADA accredited doping laboratory based in Bangkok. None of the tests returned positive result, which proved that AFC’s determination to keep the game doping-free at every level benefits the AFC Futsal Club Championship.

The cooperation of the Team officials and players during the doping controls was commendable.

FAIRPLAY AWARDS

Fairplay Awards Criteria:

The AFC Fair Play Award is awarded to the team which has collected the most Fair Play points in the competition. AFC Futsal Club Championship 2016 winner Dibba Al Hissin won the Fair Play Award after amassing 43.12 points.

Teams are assessed in five categories, with a further category relating to the behavior of the public. This is how the points are calculated.

1. Red and Yellow Card (max. 10 marks):If a player who is on a yellow card (-1 point) commits another yellow card offence, only the red card will count (-3 points). But if a player who has already been cautioned then commits a red card offence, both cards will count (so the player will receive -4 points). This is the only section in which it is possible to receive a score below zero.

2. Positive Play (max. 10 marks):This is designed to encourage attractive play that will increase the enjoyment of spectators and the following areas are taken into consideration:

Positive• Using attacking tactics, not defensive• Speeding up the game• Efforts to gain time (e.g. bringing the ball back into play quickly

even if the team is in a winning position)• Continuing to push for goals when in a winning positionNegative• • Slowing down the game• Time wasting• Tactics based on foul play• Play-acting (simulation)

3. Respect towards the opponent (max. 5 marks):Players should respect the Laws of the Game and abide by the spirit of Fair Play. The Fair Play delegate’s assessment will not double count items already covered in the ‘Red and Yellow cards’ category, but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. This category will also include offences overlooked by the referee. Any single major incident between players may have a significant bearing on the final score.

4. Respect towards the referee (max. 5 marks):Players are expected to respect the officials - including assistants - at all times. The Fair Play delegate’s assessment will not double count items already covered in the ‘Red and Yellow cards’ but the seriousness of the offences punished by cards may be considered. Any single major incident may have a significant bearing on the score.A positive attitude, including the acceptance of doubtful decisions without protest, will be rewarded with high marks

5. Behaviour of the officials (max. 5 marks):Team officials, including coaches, are expected to develop the sporting, technical and tactical level of their team – and instruct players to behave in accordance with the Fair Play principles. Positive and negative aspects of the team officials’ conduct will be assessed – such as whether they calm down or provoke angry players or fans and how they accept the decisions of the referee. Co-operation with the media will also be taken into account. Any single major incident may have a significant bearing on the final mark, as will breaches of the regulations governing the dugout and technical area.

For categories 1-5, the overall assessment of a team is obtained by adding up the points given for the individual categories, dividing this sum by the maximum points score (40) and multiplying it by 10.

Total Number of points (x 10 / (40*)).

In addition, there is one further category assessed by the Fair Play delegate

6. Behaviour of the crowd (max. 5 marks):All teams begin with a score of 5 points. A maximum of a further 5 points can be added for:

• Verbal support in acceptable form• Covert recognition of outstanding play by the opponents

A maximum of 5 points can be deducted for:

• Persistent foul and abusive language• Persistent abuse of the officials’ decisions• Aggressive and threatening conduct towards opposing fans
