TEAM SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2008

TRACK 1BEN: Welcome to TEAM Radio. I’m Ben.JENNY: And I’m Jenny. We’ve got a great show for you today.BEN: We’re talking about nationality. We want to know, “Are you proud of your country?”JENNY: We’re also looking at the influence of computer games. We asked five teenagers to test twoInternet and computer games for us. And TEAM reporter Jake is on the bus today. He’s finding outwhat annoys us on public transport.BEN: But first, we’re talking to a pupil at Britain’s coolest school.

TRACK 2 JENNY: In TEAM 1, we’ve got an article called, ‘The School that Makes the Stars’. It’s about the BRITSchool in London. The BRIT School is a performing arts school. It’s famous because Amy Winehouse,Leona Lewis and Katie Melua all went there. I’m going to talk to a pupil who is at the school at themoment. Her name is Charnele and she’s 17. Hi, Charnele.CHARNELE (on the phone): Hi.JENNY: Thanks for talking to us today.CHARNELE: That’s fine.JENNY: Why did you want to go to the BRIT School in the first place?CHARNELE: Um, because I’d, like, heard a lot about it and then I liked the atmosphere there.JENNY: Great! How long have you been there now?CHARNELE: Um. Since August last year.JENNY: Fantastic. And are you enjoying it?CHARNELE: Yeah, I am. I really am.JENNY: Is it true that famous pop stars and actors visit your school?CHARNELE: Yeah, last term I think it was ... Leona came to visit ...JENNY: Leona Lewis?

CHARNELE: Yeah.JENNY: Wow! Did she sing for you or ...?CHARNELE: No, she was just, like, actually she was listening to students sing.JENNY: Wow! Did she give any of the students any feedback?CHARNELE: She was just, like, ... um ... if we want to go into that sort of profession, she was like, “Knowwhat you want to do, ’cos it’s not easy.”JENNY: Mm.CHARNELE: ... and stuff. Yeah, it’s fine and she enjoys it and she’s glad she’s there.JENNY: So she gave you some good advice.CHARNELE: Yeah.JENNY: Mm. When you leave school, what do you hope to do?CHARNELE: Um, I’d like to be a backing dancer.JENNY: Oh, great.CHARNELE: Yeah.JENNY: Would you like to be famous?CHARNELE: I wouldn’t mind, as long as I’ve got, like, a good job ... then, um, I’m fine.JENNY: That’s very sensible. So you’re getting a good grounding and good training at the BRIT School.CHARNELE: Yeah.JENNY: Fantastic. What about your friends? Have you got any er ... Amy Winehouses or Adeles amongstyour friends?CHARNELE: Um. I’ve got a couple but ... yeah ... yeah, I’ve got a few.JENNY: Fantastic. Well, it’s been lovely to speak to you, Charnele. Good luck with your future career. And all the best for the future.CHARNELE: Thank you.JENNY: Thank you.

TRACK 3BEN: TEAM Phone-In.JENNY: Ben, are you proud to be British?

BEN: Yes and no. I love our sense of humour. But I’m not proud of some of our problems – like binge-drinking.JENNY: Mm. We’d like to know how you feel about your country. Call, text or e-mail.BEN: I’ve got an e-mail from Alex in Bristol. He writes, “I’m proud of Britain because I grew up here, but there are too many cars and traffic jams.”JENNY: And now I’ve got Katie on the line. She’s from Oxford. Hi, Katie. Are you proud of Britain?KATIE: Hi, Jenny. I love my country. I always support British sports teams and I love it when we win. Soyes, I’m proud to be British.BEN: Thanks, Katie. Now on the line, I’ve got Josh. He’s in Manchester. Josh, are you proud to beBritish?JOSH: Hi, Ben. I hate to say it, but I’m not proud of my country. When I go abroad to other countriesand people ask me where I’m from, I feel embarrassed.BEN: Why’s that, Josh?JOSH: Because British people never try and speak other people’s languages.BEN: Thanks everyone for your comments. What do you think? Are you proud of your country? That’sthe end of today’s Team Phone-In.

TRACK 4BEN: In TEAM, we’ve got an article about screen games. Two new games have been in the newsrecently: Miss Bimbo, an Internet game for girls, and Grand Theft Auto 4, a computer game about ganglife in a big American city. We’re asking, “Are these games just ‘fun’ or can they influence how youbehave?”JENNY: We tested the two games. Olly and Claire played GTA4 for us. Olly, what did you think of thegame?OLLY: Well, I liked it. I loved the car chases and, yes, I liked the fighting.JENNY: Do you think this game could influence you to act in the same way in real life?OLLY: Not at all. I would never do any of that in real life.JENNY: Claire?CLAIRE: Well, I thought I wouldn’t like this. But I was wrong. I spent hours driving bikes, boats, helicopters and cars. I fought with gangs and I stole stuff from shops.

JENNY: Would this game influence you to behave like that?CLAIRE: No way! I’m not a crazy driver or a criminal, but I can see that it makes violence seem fun.BEN: I think they liked it! What about the internet game Miss Bimbo? I’ve got three teenage girls hereand they’ve tested the game. First, Alice. What did you think?ALICE: I’m Alice and I’m 15. I think this game is terrible. It will encourage younger girls to go on a diet.Personally, I would never play it.BEN: Natalie, what did you think?NATALIE: I agree with Alice. The game is rubbish. Who wants to look like a Barbie doll? Maybe it willinfluence younger girls to have plastic surgery, which is really bad.BEN: Finally, Lulu. How was the game?LULU: The game will be fine for younger girls as long as they know it’s not serious. I don’t think they’llbe influenced by it. Actually, I thought it was quite fun.

TRACK 5JENNY: Do you use public transport? Do you take a bus to school? Or maybe a train? In TEAM, we’vegot an advert about behaviour on transport. We want to know what annoys you about other people onpublic transport. Our reporter Jake is travelling on a London bus today. He’s talking to passengers.JAKE: I’m on the number 1 bus in central London. I want to ask the passengers what annoys themwhen they’re travelling on public transport. Excuse me, I’m from TEAM Radio. What’s your name?CALLUM: Callum.JAKE: Hi, Callum. What annoys you most about other passengers?CALLUM: I hate people who sit next to you and eat smelly food, like burgers and chips. It makes me feelsick.JAKE: Thanks, Callum. And your friend here, what’s your name?AMY: I’m Amy. I hate people who chat loudly on their mobile phones. I can’t read my magazine becauseI can hear their conversation.JAKE: Let’s ask this passenger. What’s your name?JAKE: Excuse me, what’s your name?RYAN: Oh, sorry. I’m Ryan.JAKE: What annoys you about public transport, Ryan?

TEAM NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2008

TRACK 6 JENNY: Hi, I’m Jenny.BEN: And I’m Ben. Welcome to TEAM Radio.JENNY: In this issue we’ve got lots to discuss. We’re talking about nuclear power.BEN: And we’ll be talking about drugs.JENNY: We’ve got another TEAM test. This time our teenagers will be testing shoes!BEN: But first it is our Team Phone-In. Today’s topic is jealousy.

TRACK 7 BEN: TEAM Phone-InJENNY: This November, the new Harry Potter film will be in cinemas in the UK. One of the themes ofthe story is jealousy. In the film, Ron Weasley goes out with Lavender Brown. This makes Hermione feelreally jealous. We’ve got psychiatrist Dr Martin Jones in the studio today and we’re talking aboutjealousy. So, call in with your questions or problems. Our first caller this morning is Kyle, who’s 15. HiKyle, when do you feel jealous?KYLE: Hi. I’m jealous of my brother. He’s two years older than me, and he’s perfect. Too perfect! He’ssporty, he’s good-looking and he’s clever. I think my mum and dad love him more than me.JENNY: Dr Jones?DR JONES: Hello, Kyle. I think a lot of teenagers feel like this about their brothers and sisters.JENNY: What’s your advice for Kyle?

DR JONES: First, why don’t you talk to your brother? Perhaps he thinks your parents love you better.Second, try to feel proud of him. Feeling proud is a good feeling – you’ll probably like it.JENNY: Thanks, Kyle. Now we’ve got Caitlin. Hi, Caitlin.CAITLIN: Hi, Jenny.JENNY: What’s happening, Caitlin? Tell us your problem.CAITLIN: Yes, I’m in this group of friends and they’re all really pretty and clever. They’re all taller andslimmer than me. I’m the ugly duckling. I wish I was like them. It’s not fair.DR JONES: Hi, Caitlin. It sounds like you have a low opinion of yourself. But you’ve got friends! So theylike you! Here’s my advice: make a list of the good things about you. You shouldn’t worry about thingsyou can’t be.JENNY: That’s good advice for all of us. Our next caller is Abi. Hi, Abi.ABI: Hello.JENNY: Abi, what do you get jealous about?ABI: Money! My mates all have lots of money. They all buy the latest iPods, new trainers, they go out atthe weekend to concerts and go on expensive holidays. My parents hardly give me any money. It’s notfair. I feel jealous and angry about it.DR JONES: Hi, Abi. This is a difficult one. First, remember that money can’t buy you love. It really isn’tthe most important thing in life. Second, there are lots of fun things that don’t cost money – joiningsports clubs, chatting in cafés, going for walks around the city with your friends.ABI: Yes, thanks. I will.JENNY: Thank you, Dr Jones, for coming in to the studio, and thank you to our callers for sharing theirfeelings with us.BEN: That’s the end of today’s Team Phone-In.

TRACK 8 JENNY: Here’s a question for you, Ben. Would you be happy to live next door to a nuclear powerstation?BEN: No way!JENNY: The British Government is planning to build ten nuclear power stations over the next twentyyears, so someone will have to live next to them.

BEN: Let’s see what our teens think about nuclear power. In the studio, we’ve got Samuel, Adam andKirstin. Samuel – a nuclear power station in your town – what’s your opinion?SAMUEL: I’d be terrified. I’d prefer a wind farm to a nuclear power station.BEN: Why?SAMUEL: Because of the nuclear waste. It’s deadly.BEN: Adam, are you for or against nuclear power?ADAM: We have to build nuclear power stations. We don’t have any choice. Wind farms and solarpower aren’t efficient enough. I’m definitely for it.BEN: Kirstin, what’s your view?KIRSTIN: I think nuclear power is too expensive and too dangerous. I don’t want nuclear power.BEN: Is the answer to use less power? Kirstin?KIRSTIN: That’s not so easy! I can’t live without my hair straighteners, my computer, my iPod, myphone charger, the TV...ADAM: Well, then you can’t say no nuclear. We have to go nuclear if you want to go on using all thattechnology and energy!BEN: Good point! Well, we’re out of time now. Thanks for your opinions.SAMUEL, ADAM & KIRSTIN: You’re welcome!

TRACK 9JENNY: In TEAM issue 2, we’ve got an article about Converse trainers. These trainers are 100 years oldthis year – and they’re still very popular. We decided to ask some teens to test some other types ofpopular shoes for us. Here they are, talking to Jake.JAKE: Hi. I’m here with our TEAM panel. They’ve been testing shoes. Right, let’s start with Pam. Whatshoes did you test, Pam? PAM: Ugg boots. I wore these Ugg boots all last week.JAKE: What did you think of them?PAM: I love them. They’re really comfortable, but my feet got a bit hot.JAKE: Thanks. Nick? What shoes did you try this week?NICK: I tried Dr Martens boots. I’ve always wanted a pair. When I was wearing them, I felt tougher. But

they’re a bit heavy.JAKE: Joe? You wore Converse this week. How were they?JOE: Great. I only wear Converse anyway. I’ve got seven different pairs in all different colours.JAKE: Any bad points?JOE: Well, they do get dirty quickly and they’re not that comfortable. But when they’re new, they’re thebest.NICK: Gemma, what shoes did you try?GEMMA: Crocs – they’re the plastic shoes with holes in them. They’re great – really quick to get on andoff. They’re great for the beach but we’re not allowed these shoes at school.JAKE: And Penny. You’re in flip-flops.PENNY: I tried flip-flops for this test and nearly got killed. Someone stood on the back of my flip-flopwhen I was getting off a train. I fell onto the platform and hurt my hand. Flip-flops are dangerous! JAKE: Thanks, everybody on the testing panel. Back to the studio.

TRACK 10 JENNY: Our advert in TEAM this month is about drugs – in particular, cannabis. The BritishGovernment is very worried about the number of teenagers using cannabis, or ‘dope’. Here’s William’sstory. He’s 20 now, but he began smoking cannabis when he was 14.WILLIAM: I started smoking to get a buzz and to have a laugh. Every party I went to revolved aroundsmoking cannabis and I wanted to fit in. When you’re a teenager, friends are the most important thingin your life. There was a large group of us smoking regularly by the time we were 15.JENNY: How did it affect your home life?WILLIAM: I started to argue with my family, and I became really lazy. I wasn’t really interested inanything. I just lounged around in my room. When I was 16, I refused to go to school. I started to stealmoney, CD players and computer games from my parents and my brother to pay for my habit. My mumsaid that it was like living with a burglar.JENNY: And what about your school work?WILLIAM: I passed a few exams before I left school, but it wasn’t enough to get into university or college.I work in a pub and I’ve been trying to get money together so I can do some courses at college, so I cando something interesting with my life. But now it’s harder to get back on the education ladder again. Ithink cannabis cost me the chance to study and do well. It’s not worth it.

JENNY: Thanks for telling us your story, William.William’s mum has started a group called Talking About Cannabis, to help parents whose children usecannabis. Their website is www.talkingaboutcannabis.com.BEN: That’s it for today’s show. Have a great Christmas and we’ll see you in 2009!

TEAM JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2009

TRACK 11BEN: Welcome to TEAM Radio.JENNY: Hi, I’m Jenny …BEN: … and I’m Ben.JENNY: A happy new year to everyone out there.JENNY: What are our teens testing today, Ben?BEN: They’re doing a taste test. We’re asking if they can tell the difference between tap water and bottledwater.JENNY: Our music critic Sandra is coming into the studio. She’s been to see Duffy live on stage.BEN: And then we’re talking about disability. Do you talk differently to someone if they’re in awheelchair?

TRACK 12 JENNY: In this issue of TEAM, we’re talking about water. Many people think that we shouldn’t buybottled water and that it’s bad for the environment. But does it taste better? We’re doing our water test inthe studio.BEN: I’ve got two bottles of water here. We’ve put labels on them – “A” and “B”.One is tap water and the other is bottled water. Our teens are going to taste the water and guess whichone is tap water and which one is bottled water. First, Ashling.ASHLING: I’m now gonna try “A”. [drinks] I’m going to try “B” now. [drinks]

BEN: Now, Holly.HOLLY: OK. I’m going to try “A”. [drinks] And now “B”. [drinks]JENNY: So which one do you like the best? Ashling?ASHLING: I think I like “A” because “B”’s more potent.JENNY: And Holly?HOLLY: I preferred “B”.JENNY: Right. That’s one “A” and one “B”.Well, I can now reveal that “A” is the tap water and “B” is the bottled water. Are you surprised?HOLLY: I’m not, no. I knew “B” was bottled.ASHLING: It shows that tap water isn’t really as bad as we thought it was.

TRACK 13BEN: I tried both types of water and I really couldn’t tell the difference. We’ve got some experts in thestudio with us – Juliet Stevens, who’s a green campaigner, and David Evans, who’s a spokesperson for thebottled water industry. Welcome to you both. Juliet, what’s wrong with bottled water?JULIET: First, the cost. A litre of London tap water costs 0.097p. The average price of a litre of bottledwater in the UK is 96p.BEN: What do you say to that, David? It’s a waste of money.DAVID: Bottled water is convenient – when you’re out and about, it’s easy to pick up a bottle. And it’shealthier to drink water rather than Cola or sugary drinks.BEN: Juliet? What other objections do you have?JULIET: Well, there’s transport. Half a billion bottles of water come into the UK by air or sea. They comefrom countries as far away as Hawaii, New Zealand and Fiji. It’s bad to transport something like water.DAVID: That’s just part of the global economy. Products move around the world all the time. Everythingyou buy is transported. Not just water.JULIET: And what about the rubbish? Only 25% of those plastic bottles are recycled.DAVID: Most things we consume have packaging. Bottled water isn’t as bad as other products. If peopleenjoy spending their money on a bottle of water, why shouldn’t they?BEN: Thanks to Juliet and David.

TRACK 14 JENNY: Duffy is one of Britain’s hottest new talents. She’s a singer from Wales with an amazing voice. We’ve got a Duffy fan with us today. Sandra, welcome to the Team studio. You’ve been to see Duffy inconcert for us.SANDRA: Hi, Jenny. Yes, I have.JENNY: Was she good?SANDRA: She was, Jenny. The gig was in a small bar, which was perfect for her soul sound. Her songsRockferry and Mercy were fabulous.JENNY: What do you know about Duffy’s background? She grew up in a tiny town in Wales, didn’t she?SANDRA: Yes, she lived in a small town called Nefyn – it didn’t even have a record shop.JENNY: Is it true she was kicked out of the school choir?SANDRA: Yes, but she was only seven at the time. She used to sing for her friends in the school toilets!JENNY: So it was her friends who recognised her talent, but not her music teacher!SANDRA: Exactly! Well, she’s laughing now!JENNY: Yes, she is. Thanks, Sandra. Glad you enjoyed the gig.

TRACK 15 BEN: In this issue of TEAM, the ad on page 16 is about disability or rather it’s about how we treat peoplewho have a disability. I’ve got 16-year-old Kevin with me in the studio. He is a top athlete and top of theclass with Grade As in many of his exams. But people don’t see that. Why? Kevin is in a wheelchair, andhas been for ten years. Kevin, how do people react to you?KEVIN: They see the wheelchair, then me. Then I see the way people look at me.BEN: And how do they look at you?KEVIN: I can see they’re thinking, “How sad!”BEN: How does that make you feel?KEVIN: Well, a bit annoyed, but I understand. I used to be the same. But I don’t want pity. I’m anintelligent, happy lad and I live life to the full. I hope to start my own business, and I’m fitter and fasterthan most of the people I see in the street.

BEN: That’s right. I hear you’re an athlete.KEVIN: Yes, I play wheelchair tennis. I’ve played tennis for three years and I’m one of the best in myregion. My dream is to get to the Paralympics. Being in a wheelchair won’t stop me. The biggest problemisn’t my wheelchair, it’s the attitude of other people – that’s why I think this advertising campaign isgreat!BEN: Thank you for coming in and good luck with the tennis.JENNY: That’s the end of Team Radio for today.EVERYONE: Goodbye!
