creative by design Our annual celebration of creativity - CREATIVE BY DESIGN is coming next week.

This year our theme is ‘Reach for the Stars’.

At King’s we believe that within all our students are the seeds of different and wonder-ful gifts and talents.

This year in CREATIVE BY DESIGN we wish to encourage our students to explore a variety of possibilities that will enable them to see that the sky’s the limit and that it is possible for them to reach for the stars and to become all that they can be.

During this exciting week students will experience, explore and investigate a range of entertaining and educational activities. A selection of guests that will include well known author Roland Harvey, will help facilitate the students’ experiences.

Things you can think about or do in preparation for our special week:

KITE COMPETITION - Students will be encouraged to make their own kite and bring it to school to participate in the school kite competition.

I WONDER COMPETITION - What things do you wonder about that are connect-ed to flight, stars, birds, the sky, space etc? What questions do you have or perhaps you have some great answers? There will be a prize for the best question and the best answer.

‘When you reach for the stars you become one.’

Early Learning Programs Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: “Discipline your son, for in that there is hope. Do not be a willing party to his (spiritual) death.” Proverbs 19:18

Understanding Obedience We live in a society where an emphasis on teaching obe-

dience sounds to some like heavy-handed authoritarian-ism. Parents don’t want to be dictators so they sometimes move far away from anything that looks like being control-ling. This is unfortunate since God is the one who gave the instructions for children to learn obedience. Hidden within this quality are the principles that will make children suc-cessful as they get older.

When children learn to obey they learn to give up their own agenda for someone else. They learn to listen to an instruction and follow through with it. They learn how to be responsible, check back, and complete a task. In short, when children learn obedience, they not only make family life easier but they also develop the character that will make them more valuable in the work place, the com-munity and the world. In fact, learning to obey parents teaches kids what they need in order to obey God.

We say that obedience is “doing what someone says, right away, without being reminded.” Children as young as three years old can memorize this simple definition and understand what it means. Parents sometimes think that obedience is the same as compliance. When a parent says, “I can get my children to obey eventually,” that’s not obe-dience. Compliance is only part of obedience. When you say to your son, “It is time to go to bed now,” and he says, “As soon as I’m done with this game,” that’s not obedi-ence; it’s an excuse for disobedience.

As parents, it’s okay to negotiate and compromise with our children sometimes, but too often children aren’t ma-ture enough for this. In fact, they are demanding and un-able to give up their agenda for someone else. Coopera-tion requires that both people give and take. In order to get to that stage, children must first learn how to sacrifice or follow. Once they learn that, true cooperation can take place. Teach obedience and you will give your children a valuable gift that will be used for the rest of their lives.

Strategy for the week: Remember that rules and regu-lations without relationship do not work. Always develop a strong personal relationship with your child first, before demanding obedience.

Fun with Friends at Vacation Care

Some wet weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of children attending the Noah’s Ark vacation care pro-gram. Outdoor pursuits included camping, golf and ten-nis. Comfort food was also popular along with our own cinema experience, helping to brighten rainy days!

An EncouragementWe just never know what life will

throw our way. No one is exempt from problems or challenges in life, not the rich, not the poor, not the young, not the old, not non Christian, not Chris-tians. It’s how we respond to those challenges and what we determine to do with our lives that matters. Rick Warren makes some very good points.

You will enjoy the new insights that Rick Warren has, with his wife now having cancer and him having ‘wealth’ from the book sales. This is an absolutely incredible short interview with Rick Warren, ‘Purpose Driven Life’ author and pastor of Saddleback Church in California.

In the interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick War-ren, Rick said: People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is prepa-ration for eternity. We were not made to last for-ever, and God wants us to be with Him in Heaven. One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body - but not the end of me. I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of years in eterni-ty. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal. God wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity. We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn’t going to make sense.

Life is a series of problems. Either, you are in one now, you’re just coming out of one, or you’re get-ting ready to go into another one. The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than your comfort; God is more interested in mak-ing your life holy than He is in making your life happy. We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that’s not the goal of life. The goal is to grow in character, in Christ-likeness. This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer. I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don’t believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it’s kind of like two rails on a railroad track - at all times you have something good and something bad in your life. No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on, and no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for. You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems: If you focus on your problems, you’re going into self-cen-teredness, which is my problem, my issues, my pain. But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others.

We discovered quickly that in spite of the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people, God was not going to

Secondaryheal Kay or make it easy for her. It has been very dif-ficult for her, and yet God has strengthened her charac-ter, given her a ministry of helping other people, given her a testimony, drawn her closer to Him and to people. You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad of life. Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder. For instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with before. I don’t think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or for you to live a life of ease. So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, notoriety and influence. He gave me two different passages that helped me decide what to do, II Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72.

First, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases.

Second, about midway through last year, I stopped tak-ing a salary from the church.

Third, we set up foundations to fund an initiative we call The Peace Plan to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation.

Fourth, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able to serve God for free.

We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for posses-sions? Popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God’s purposes (for my life)? When I get up in the morn-ing, I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if I don’t get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. God didn’t put me on earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He’s more interested in what I am than what I do. That’s why we’re called human beings, not human doings.

Happy moments, PRAISE GOD. Difficult moments, SEEK GOD. Quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD. Painful moments, TRUST GOD. Every moment, THANK GOD.

He arrived this morning, we had prayer, spent some time just talking, and He held me for awhile because I was hav-ing a bad morning, then, He was on his way to your place.

Challenging and encouraging isn’t it? Happy parenting. ASAP. Remember the recall. Response decisions. Lifelong learning. Remember the cat will become a dog again. Check out Professional Development for Mothers. Encour-age common sense. Healed and whole. Media literacy. Forgive quickly. The gift. Follow the directions. Take the time. Check the habits. Laugh, often and loud.

Shout Praises!Quote from “Walk in Faith” by Ray McCauleyGod - You’re my God! I can’t get enough of You! I’ve worked up such hunger and thirst for God, travelling across dry and weary deserts. So here I am in the place of worship, eyes open, drinking in Your strength and glory. In Your generous love I am really living at last! My lips brim praises like fountains. I bless You every time I take a breath; My arms wave like banners of praise to You. I eat my fill of prime rib and gravy; I smack my lips. It’s time to shout praises! If I’m sleepless at midnight, I spend the hours in grateful reflection. Because You’ve always stood up for me, I’m free to run and play. I hold on to You for dear life, and You hold me steady as a post.Psalm 63:1-8

As a born-again child of the living God one of the purposes of our lives is to worship our creator. Worship causes the Holy Spirit to manifest Himself. God inhabits the praises of His people. We worship God as a lifestyle - there should not be merely times of worship but it should be a life-force within each of us. We all have a personal responsibility to worship God individually and corporately. If people don’t worship God they will find something else to worship - mon-ey, sports, a career or whatever. One of the highest forms of prayer is worship, as we speak to Him in love. Wouldn’t you rather be a people that God is seeking, as you worship Him in spirit and in truth?

Now lift your hands and worship the only true and liv-ing God in spirit and in truth.

Medication SafetyParents are reminded that students are not to carry

medication on their person, including paracetamol. It is easy to think that students are responsible enough to carry and administer their own medication, however, it is equally easy to overmedicate with dramatic effects.

We have a large campus which enjoys the integration of students of all ages, from age four to young adults. Medication can be easily dropped or misplaced and one of our younger students may find it and inadvertently con-sume it.

As staff and parents, we have a responsibility to look after each and every student on our campus. I ask parents to assist us by ensuring all medication is handed in to the college clinic for our staff to administer and ensure its safe storage.

NB: Medication must be accompanied by parental con-sent and have a pharmacy label attached.

Thank you for your assistance in these matters. ~ Mrs Andrea Webb, College Nurse

Total Football AcademyPrograms running at Bond University in Term 4 for 3 year

olds all the way up to 14 year olds. No matter how old your children are, we have a program for all.

Tiny Tots (3 - 4 Year Olds)Total Football Academy Tiny Tot Program is designed for

preschoolers to help develop their motor skills. The pro-gram is fun and covers the FUNdamentals of balance, co-ordination and agility. These three areas are used in every day sport and are also known as multi skills.

Each session will focus on technique and will be hidden in fun games meaning more fun for every child. To register your child online click on the following link http://www.totalfootballacademy.com.au/upcoming-events-detail.php?id=6

There is a FREE TRIAL on the 16th October. Program starts on Saturday 23rd October.

Bond Season 3 (First Kicks 4 - 5 Year olds, Mini Kickers 6 - 8 Year olds)

As your child progresses and develops their soccer skills he/she will want to play competitive soccer, normally for a club team. This involves you taking your child to different clubs around the Gold Coast (a lot of travel). We have de-signed a season to take place at one venue every week, for the eight week program. As this runs over 1 hour 30 minutes if you choose you can leave your child with us, in a fun and safe environment.

When the team your child plays for has no fixture, they will have a training session in one of our skills squares. Also as it is the off season of the normal season this is a great opportunity to keep your child involved, allowing them to develop their skills.

Total Football Academy will be running the popular First Kicks (4-5 year olds) and Mini Kickers (6, 7, 8 year olds) soccer season at Bond University. Last year during fourth term over 140 players’ took part at the three venues we ran the popular seasons at. Games will be played inside the inflatable fields, which captures the imagination of players, giving them a great soccer experience. Training will take place inside a skills square focusing on different skills each week, such as dribbling, turning and shooting. As part of the program players also receive a free soccer kit (top and shorts). The season starts on Saturday 16th October at 9.00 - 10.30 am for eight consecutive weeks. To register your child online click on the following link http://www.total-footballacademy.com.au/upcoming-events-detail.php?id=6

Currently she is away in NSW this week at the JNJG Srixon Sub Jun-ior Championships held on Friday. Dee-Dee has been a member of the Gold Coast Academy of Sport. She represented the Gold Coast Academy earlier in the year as a part of the golf team and played at the academy games in Armidale in April.

Her final golf event is in December. She will compete in the Greg Nor-man Junior Masters which will be played Dec 12-16th – she has already qualified for this event earlier this year. Great work, Dee-Dee!

Golf - CP Park On September 5th, CP competed for a place on the Gold Coast Dis-

trict Golf team. Held at the Surfers Paradise Golf Club, CP competed against 128 others, coming 2nd overall.
